Binghamton Firefighter/Paramedic John Janos was laid to rest on the morning of Wednesday April 10th, 2013 following his line of duty passing in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 6th. According to press reports shortly after midnight on April 6th, crews were dispatched to 23 Henry Street for a report of a fire alarm activated.

Structure fire for Frewsburg Frewsburg, NY - On March 31, 2013, the Frewsburg Fire Department was dispatched at 10:02 a.m. for a structure at the corner of West Main Street and Center Street. Car 341 reported a working structure fire. Mutual aid companies responded from Kiantone, Falconer, Kennedy, Busti and Lakewood. The fire is under investigation.

South Lockport handles one car versus power pole and tree South Lockport volunteers were dispatched to a one car accident on Upper Mountain Road.

Chief Derek Caldwell was advised it was a car versus tree. On scene within minutes Chief Caldwell found the car went off the road, glanced off a tree and then snapped a main power pole that was housing three transformers. The car then went forward and hit another tree head on.

Niagara County Sheriff's Department units were on scene providing road control until fire police arrived. As Caldwell was gearing up and his ambulance and trucks were rolling into the scene, one of

the transformers blew and started leaking a clear liquid to the ground.

Chief Caldwell had fire control tone out Wrights Corners for fire police assistance at Stone Road and Upper Mountain.

The victims in the car were amazingly walking and were removed by deputies to the other side of the road for safety.

NYSEG responded on an emergency mode and were on scene making repairs as emergency crews were still providing aid to the vic-

tims.

Both the driver and passenger were luckily not seriously hurt.

They both ended up signing off from transport.

The driver told the deputy that she got her sleeve caught on the cup holder and she and her passenger both were looking down to see what was the problem, when she went off the road and traveled a good distance striking, crunching, breaking, snapping and hitting head on.

The road was shut down for about an hour while repairs were made.

Elderly woman dies after fiery blaze in Troy Troy, NY. A woman that was trapped inside of her home and died of her injuries. She was trapped behind steel doors with barricades and firefighters were forced to chop through the wall. Once inside, they were able to retrieve the trapped elderly woman. Carrying her in a stokes basket, they delivered her with their oxygen mask on her face to an awaiting ambulance, where she was rushed to an area hospital. When crews arrived, they found heavy black smoke coming from the single family structure that sat up on a hill.Troy's Fire Chief Thomas Garrett stated that the structure would most likely be a total loss. New York State K-9 and OFPC were on the scene as well.

Accident in Town of Newburgh On the afternoon of March 8th, Middlehope firefighters were toned out for a two car accident on Route 9W at the intersections of Route 32 and Interstate 84. They arrived to find a Verizon truck had collided with a station wagon. The driver of the wagon was transported to a local hospital

by Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services, but the injuries did not appear to be serious.

Buffalo firefighters of the 3rd Battalion 4th Platoon were called out to battle a blaze at 86 Wick St. on Buffalo's east side on April 4th.

Engine Co. 22, which is a block JUMP TO FILE # away, made fast 040813104 work of the fire.

The captain of Engine Co. 22 requested the balance of a full box.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital with injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Damage was listed at $2,500 to the building and $0 to the contents. The structure was a vacant two and a half story frame dwelling.

Vacant building erupts in Beacon On March 20, 2013 at a little before midnight, a large building erupted in flames bringing mutual aid to Beacon. The Beacon Fire Department arrived at 668 Wolcott Avenue, the site of the former Craig House, to find a large vacant building with heavy flames. Access to the building was a problem and a defensive attack commenced. Fishkill Fire Department and Beacon Ambulance assisted at the scene. Glenham and Rombout stood by at Beacon. The building was a total loss and the fire is under investigation by local officials.

Rollover in East Chatham East Chatham, NY.On March 13, 2013, East Chatham Car 2 didn't have far to go to respond to a rollover accident. The accident occurred in front of the East Chatham Post Office on Route 295 and the vehicle ended up in his driveway. Columbia County 911 dispatched East Chatham firefighters and Chatham Rescue at 7:52 a.m. for the one car rollover accident. Reports from the scene advised that a lone female was westbound on Route 295 by the East Chatham Post Office when she struck black ice, crossed the roadway and struck a culvert and flipped over.

The vehicle landed on its roof. A helicopter was placed on standby, but was not needed.

Chatham Rescue transported the driver to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA. The Columbia County Sheriff's Department investigated. East Chatham firefighters were back in service at 8:51 a.m.

Collier conditions in Buffalo Buffalo firefighters of the 4th Battalion 2nd Platoon were called out to battle a structure fire at 418 Busti Ave. on Buffalo's west side on March 22nd. Firefighters encountered collier conditions throughout the structure and the chief pulled companies out several times. It was reported occupied. A dog perished in the blaze and two firefighters were injured, one requiring transport to the hospital. Damage was listed at $50,000 to the building and $10,000 to the contents. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The neighboring structure also sustained exposure damage.

Firefighters are Grand Marshals Syracuse, NY. Syracuse is known nationally, and beyond, as Orange Country, based on the fame of Syracuse University sports teams. However, the city has a rich Irish culture, as evidenced by a neighborhood known as Tipperary Hill, where a traffic light has the green light above the yellow and red on all four sides.

More than 30 years ago, Nancy Duffy, one of the most honored broad- JUMP TO FILE # cast journalists in 032113100 Central New York and an active community leader, had a desire to promote Irish culture and heritage in the Syracuse area. From that desire, a St. Patrick’s Day parade was born.

It is now, after 32 consecutive years, the second largest event of its kind in the Northeast. A prominent local person, of Irish descent, is chosen each year as the parade’s grand marshal.

In 2012, the selectee was the Honorable Charles “Charlie” T. Major. Major served as a town or village justice for 12 years, followed by a 14 year stint as Skaneateles town supervisor.

Major then became a justice on the New York State Supreme Court for the fifth district. Judge Major’s involvement with the Skaneateles Fire Department has also been exemplary.

In his earlier time with the department, he served as: second lieutenant, first lieutenant and captain of Hose Company #1. This year, he will celebrate 54 years with the department, and still responds to alarms and rides the apparatus.

According to Kathy Buff Murphy, another veteran Skaneateles firefighter, “Charlie is just one of those ‘behind the scenes’ guys.

Wish we had more of him around.”

This year’s grand marshal also comes from the legal fraternity.

Thomas J. Maroney is a past U.S. Attorney for New York’s northern district, and also Professor Emeritus at the Syracuse University College of Law, where he taught Constitutional Law, among other courses.

One of his many successful former students is Vice President Joe Biden. Maroney and his wife, Dr. Mary Kay Maroney, are both members of the Fayetteville Fire Department. Tom is a fire police officer, and Mary Kay the “Distinguished Emerita Professor and Director” of Nursing at Utica College, volunteers as a crew chief and EMT with the department’s ambulance.

The residents of Onondaga County are extremely fortunate to have people the caliber of the Majors and Maroneys volunteer their time and talents for the betterment of the community.

Members of the local fire service are extremely proud of these two gentlemen and the recognition they have received.

MVA with entrapment in Lima

Dispatcher retires

Lima, NY - On Sunday night, March 31st, Lima Fire and EMS responded to an MVA with entrapment on Route 15A south of the village. A vehicle struck a utility pole, bringing live wires down. Workers from National Grid disconnected the power, allowing firefighters to safely extricate the driver from the wreckage. Mercy Flight Central transported the driver to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. The cause of the crash was under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Police.

Dispatcher of the Buffalo Fire Department Nelson Riollano retired after over 20 years with the Buffalo Fire Department.

Nelson started his career with Engine Co. 26 for five and a half years. He then was promoted to Assistant Dispatcher and later promoted to Dispatcher. His last day was Saturday, March 30, 2013.

No injuries in Buffalo Buffalo firefighters of 3rd Battalion 4th Platoon were called out to battle a blaze in a two and a half frame dwelling at 261 Stevens St. on Buffalo's east side on March 28th. The fire started in the second floor. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Two-one and three quarter inch hand lines were used along with 40 feet of ladders. Damage was listed at $45,000 to the building and $15,000 to the contents. The structure was occupied.

Apartment fire in Syracuse Syracuse, NY - On Friday morning, March 29, a Signal 99 was transmitted for an apartment building fire at the Hedgewood Apartments, 504 West Brighton Avenue. Fire units arrived on location to smoke showing from a two story apartment building. The blaze was quickly extinguished. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Binghamton Firefighter/Paramedic John Janos was laid to rest on the morning of Wednesday April 10th, 2013 following his line of duty passing in the early morning hours of Saturday April 6th.

According to press reports shortly after midnight on April 6th, JUMP TO FILE # crews were dis- 041113139 patched to 23 Henry Street for a report of a fire alarm activated. On scene crews climbed at least five flights of stairs to check for fire and clear the alarm.

After returning from the call, Firefighter Janos mentioned he wasn't feeling well and returned to his bunk. He was found deceased still in his bunk shortly after 7 a.m. later that morning. A preliminary cause of death was ruled heart related, but a complete report will take several weeks.

At the time of his passing FF Janos was 57 years old. Firefighter Janos was hired by the City of Binghamton Fire Department in 1988 and served honorably for over 24 years.

He was assigned to Quint 213 at the West State Street fire station. During his career, Firefighter Janos served as a paramedic and hazmat specialist. He also served several years as the Union President of Binghamton Fire I.A.F.F. Local 729.

To all who knew Firefighter Janos, he was known as a person who was always willing to help.

Whether it was on or off the job, he would be the first one to step up to the plate. He was also known as a loving family man and Firefighter Janos leaves behind a wife of 34 years, two sons and a daughter. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and fire-

fighting brothers and sisters alike.

Firefighters and police officers from across the northeast showed up to honor Firefighter Janos as he took a final ride with the Binghamton Fire Department.

Jefferson battles working fire Jefferson, NY. Around 8:30 p.m. on the night of March 21st, Schoharie County 911 toned Jefferson Fire Department to a reported structure fire with smoke and flames showing on State Route 10 near Main St. Chief 1011 within minutes was on the scene confirming the working fire and requested mutual aid from Summit and Stamford.

Incident command found heavy fire on the C side of the two and a half story, single family home with heavy black smoke pushing the second floor A side.

E-1023 and T-1041 went to work on the blaze under the interior command of Assistant Chief W. Bivona. The first line went right to work on the second floor.

crew knocked down all the fire on the second floor as a second crew worked the C side. Stamford's ladder aided with ventilation.

Summit provided E-1621, T1641 and manpower. Stamford had a ladder and a tanker. Davenport and Charlottesville aided with tankers to the scene. Many other departments aided with stand by and fill in's.

Jefferson's E-1021 was second due and E-1022 went to a fill site at a local pond. Jefferson and Summit EMS squads aided as well.

Extrication drill for West Haverstraw Members of the West Haverstraw Fire Department conducted a very challenging extrication exercise at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona as part of their weekly training session. The scenario began as a national police chase resulting in a violent accident with one car with four victims on top of a second car, severely injuring and trapping the driver of the lower vehicle. Members stabilized the upper vehicle, extricated the victims and then disentangled the driver of the lower vehicle.

Three car MVA for Winona Lake On April 4, 2013 at 4:40 p.m., Winona Lake Engine Company was toned out for a three car MVA on the entrance ramp to the New York State Thruway from Route 300. One patient was transported to a local hospital by Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services.

Man killed by train in Churchville Churchville, NY. A man was killed by a train on March 3 just outside the village on Sanford Road North. Fire and EMS responded for a male struck by a train. Arriving units searched for several minutes before locating the male who was deceased. The rail line, owned by CSX, had the train stopped. An ambulance was called for the engineer, who was distraught. The Monroe County Sheriffs Office was conducting an investigation.

Fire brings battalion response Chatham, NY. On March 18, 2013, Columbia County 911 dispatched Tri-Village firefighters and Chatham Rescue at 4:41 p.m. for a reported residential structure fire at 509 Bashford Road in the Town of Chatham. A FedEx driver reported the fire.

Tri-Village Car 3 requested mutual aid from Niverville and North Chatham. Nassau was then requested to standby in their quarters. Command requested a tanker response from Battalion 5.

tankers from the Austerlitz Fire District, Canaan, East Chatham, Lebanon Valley, Red Rock and North Chatham. Command also requested Valatie with their ladder and Ghent to the scene.

Tri-Village Car 3 sustained reported burns to his hand and was transported to Albany Medical Center by Chatham Rescue.

The New York State Police and

Columbia County Sheriff's Department were on the scene. Columbia County Fire Coordinator John Howe was also on the scene.

Chatham Rescue requested Greenport Rescue to the scene with their rehab unit and the County EMS Gator was also requested.

The Columbia County Cause and Origin Team and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control are investigating.

Chili firefighter Chad Dudley lays water into a detached garage Thursday afternoon.

Garage fire sends one to hospital in Chili Chili, NY. The Clifton Fire Department was dispatched with automatic mutual assistance from Chili for a reported garage fire at 3871 Union Street on the afternoon of March 14th.

The initial call reported a man, who dropped a torch and then heard a small explosion.

The first arriving Chili Chief, Jason Elliotto said, "initial efforts were focused on cooling and protecting the home before extinguishing the garage, which was

fully engulfed in flames." Adding that the "quick response saved the house."

High winds and a dead hydrant required an additional engine to the scene.

Spencerport Fire Department filled in during the two hour incident that closed SR259.

The Town of Chili Highway

Department brought in a backhoe to raze the structure as it was deemed unsafe to leave standing.

Two people, who were home at the time of the fire, were transported by Chili Ambulance to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The American Red Cross was on scene to assist the family.

The Monroe County Fire Bureau fire investigation team was conducting an investigation.

The SUV had to be attacked first to prevent a gas explosion.

Rapids rolls up to working wind whipped house fire Chief Barry Kobrin rolled up to a working house fire at 6565 Robinson Road.

Heavy black smoke was being blown across Robinson Road and fire was ripping through the rear of the house with an SUV in the driveway.

Chief Kobrin called in mutual aid from South Lockport volunteers and Clarence Center for their FAST team. Rural Metro EMS rolled onto the scene with two ALS ambulances to stand by.

Rapids first in engines had assistance from the Niagara County Sheriff deputies, who pulled five inch main feed hose to the hydrants for fast water supply. As crews made their way to the rear of the house, the rear tires on the SUV exploded and caused a few tense moments.

Hand lines were used to try and stop the spread of the fire, but as the firefighters made their initial attack, the roof of the rear building fell in.

out before the gas tank could explode. The rear firefighters then made their attack against the rear of the house, blowing it back to the burnt out area.

Attack teams from the front hit the deck and made their way into the house below the billowing black smoke. South Lockport A8 aerial pulled up and laddered the roof, which allowed for ventilation.

Clarence Center set up a rear and front FAST team to assist. A few firefighters were attended to at the scene and rehab was set up to monitor all firefighters.

Niagara County origin and cause were called to the scene to investigate. The Niagara County Sheriff's office was on scene to take the report.

Windham battles condo fire On March 23,2013 at 5:20 a.m., Windham Hose Company under the command of Fire Chief Michael Scarey responded to a fully involved condominium fire at Windham Mountain Village.

When dispatched, the caller stated there were already flames showing. The unit was unoccupied. First arriving units reported a heavily involved fire already coming through the roof. Hensonville Hose, under the command of Chief Dave Sherman was dispatched for mutual aid. The fire was brought under control in approximately 45 minutes, however units remained on the scene long after to check for hot spots or rekindle. Greene County Sheriff's Department and fire investigators responded to the scene to determine cause and origin. Windham Ambulance service was on location to assist, but there were no injuries.

East Rochester removes man from park East Rochester, NY. The East Rochester Fire Department was dispatched to Legion Eyer Park to assist ER Ambulance and police for a man trapped in a crevasse. 3C10 arrived on scene and requested assistance from Pittsford Fire Department with the use of their off road vehicle. The victim was extricated with a stokes basket to the awaiting ambulance and Pittsford was canceled. There was no indication how the man became lodged in the crevasse or his injuries.

Rochester, NY. The Rochester Fire Department was dispatched to multiple calls for a house fire late on the afternoon of March 25th at 68 Myrtle Street. Engine 5 (Group 3) was on location with a working fire in a two and a half double occupancy. Heavy smoke and flames filled out the assignment. A temporary pump problem with E5 brought E10 to the scene. The fire was under control in about 30 minutes.

No injuries were reported and the fire was under investigation by the Rochester Fire Department. The building did have a premise warning that was conveyed to responding units as an abandoned structure.

MVA for Rush Rush, NY - On March 14, 2013 at 3:55 p.m., a two vehicle head on crash was reported on Rt 15A. Rush Pumper 582 and Rescue 588 with A589 were alerted to the scene. Asst. Chief Jake Vogt reported one person seriously trapped. Two patients were transported ALS via Henrietta Ambulance and one patient went BLS via Rush to Strong Memorial in Rochester, with non-life threatening injuries. According to the Monroe County Sheriffs Office, one driver crossed into the other lane due to driver inattention.

Firefighters save cat and battle blaze in City of Newburgh City of Newburgh, NY. At a little before 9 a.m. on April 2nd, the City of Newburgh was alerted to a fire at 109 Montgomery Street. They arrived to find very smokey conditions in the structure.

Second alarm mutual aid companies were quickly alerted, bringing Stewart's Air Guard, West Point and Castle Point. Smoke was billowing from the eves of the

structure. Firefighters pulled multiple lines and through the use of ladders, firefighters were able to access the seat of the fire.

The fire was deemed under control and overhaul commenced at a little after 10 a.m. An investigation into the cause and origin of

the fire is under way by investigators.

Two cats perished in the fire, but a third was revived through the use of oxygen with an animal mask. That cat was transported in fair condition by 1st Responder Photographer Bob Root to Flannery Animal Hospital and perked up during transport.

Scottsville with mutual aid Wheatland, NY - In these times of sagging volunteerism, mutual aid is a common occurrence in Monroe County. On March 18th, Scottsville Fire Department was dispatched for a car on fire in a garage. Also dispatched and responding were Rush, Mumford, Caledonia and Henrietta Fire Departments. The first arriving chief reported the fire was out by the homeowner with a fire extinguisher.

Car versus fuel truck in Forestburg At 7:30 a.m. on March 22, Sparrowbush Fire Department was dispatched under inter-county mutual aid to Forestburg in Sullivan County for an MVA involving an overturned fuel delivery truck and a passenger car with entrapment.

Crew from R-848 arrived on scene with 41-1 and popped the driver’s door on the passenger car and assisted EMS with passenger extraction. After this assignment was complete, the crew was assigned to assist Forestburg and Monticello on hazard control of

the leaking kerosene from the overturned truck. Crews assisted with placing spill absorbent pads and booms. The crew also assisted in slowing the leak on the seam of the tank.

Sparrowbush was also dispatched for fire police to shut down the highway at the County line while crews worked to clear the roadway of debris and fuel.

They were assisted in this endeavor by fire police units from Port Jervis Both drivers were transported to Catskill Regional Hospital in Harris. The driver of the passenger car had non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, who was walking around at fire department arrival, was eventually airlifted from the local hospital to Westchester County Medical Center for a possible broken neck.

Garage fire and collapse Buffalo firefighters of the 3rd Battalion 3rd Platoon were called out to battle a blaze in a 20 x 40 garage at 25 Clare St. on Buffalo's east side, which caused $40,000 in damage to the building and $20,000 to the contents on April 2. The fire also caused damage to 19 Clare St., 911 Clinton St. and 915 Clinton St. totaling $22,000. Firefighters used two-two and a half inch hand lines and two-one and three quarter inch hand lines as well as a ladder pipe. No injuries were reported and the garage collapsed a short time into the fire.

Also power lines fell, energizing a fence. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Buffalo unveils new apparatus Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield unveiled two new vehicles on March 15, 2013 that will be added to the city's firefighting fleet. The first rig is a new Field Communication Unit that will be used as a mobile command post at incidents and events. The truck was purchased using a Federal Urban Area Security Initiative Grant and features a link that will enable the Erie County Sheriff's helicopter to send a real time video to the rig. The second rig is an American LaFrance 93 foot mid-mount aerial truck. It will be assigned to Ladder 4 at Rhode Island and Chenango Streets.

Laugh your way to the bank with a stand-up comedy fund-raiser

Accident on Skyway Bridge High winds, snow and ice made for a four vehicle and a tractor trailer accident on the Skyway Bridge at the Seneca St. off ramp on March 19th in Buffalo. An engine, ladder, Rescue 1 and the 3rd Battalion Chief were dispatched. 3rd Battalion Chief Mike Biasillo requested an additional engine and ladder due to multiple victims. Engine's 1 and 2, Ladders 2 and 5, Rescue Co.1, the 3rd Battalion Chief and F-20, the EMS officer of the 3rd Platoon responded. Four of the patients were transported to hospitals. The others signed off. The bridges northbound lane was closed for about an hour.

Novick’s been producing comedy shows since 1977, and has experience producing shows with such comedians as Jerry Seinfeld, Rosie O’Donnell, Larry The Cable Guy, and Tim Allen.

"The comedians were very funny, and very professional," wrote Mark Bruhmuller, Fire Chief of the Churchtown Fire Company of New York. “Joey Novick did an excellent job. Everybody loves to laugh, and it's a great deal of fun."

ComedyWorks produces more than 300 shows a year, almost 150 of those for emergency service organizations. The money these shows can

raise varies, depending on things like the number of tickets sold, how they're priced, the amount spent on promotion and whether food and drink are available.

"Mostly companies produce shows in their own facilities, which may hold 300–400 people," says Novick.

The feature performer will be someone who's headlined the comedy circuit: Catch a Rising Star, the Improv, the Comedy Store. The host of the show will be a comedian who's very high-energy, like a gameshow host, to get the audience warmed up. A triple headliner show!”

Car fire on Interstate 390 On March 18, 2013 at 6:48 a.m., the Rush Fire Department responded to Interstate 390 norrthbound at milemarker 60 with Pumper 582 and Ambulance 589 to a reported vehicle fire. 5-C38 was on location at a fully involved vehicle. The fire was knocked down in 25 seconds with another ten minutes to overhaul. For every minute the Sheriffs stopped traffic, the traffic jam backed up one mile. For every minute they blocked the road. They used 200 gallons of water and half a gallon of foam.

Lockport responds to tree and power lines down The wind whipped at times up to 45 mph and one of these gusts brought down a hugh tree limb on Pine Street just South of Willow.

Lockport Fire got on scene to find two huge limbs across Pine Street. They ripped down a number of power poles and a large transformer. Wires were ripped from houses and poles up and down the road waved under the pressure. A few cracked.

Half way down the street, another transformer started arching, causing Lockport Fire to close the

roadway down from High Street to Willow Street.

Lockport Fire worked with NYSEG to secure the scene so they could get power restored.

The road was shut down most of the day and Lockport Fire stayed on scene for a number of hours until the scene was safe.

Dutchess County weekend at fire academy Fishkill, NY. Firefighters representing 21 fire departments from Dutchess County pose in front of the NYS Fire Academy in Montour Falls at the recent 21th Dutchess County Training Weekend.

The weekend offered several courses to help advance the skills of firefighters and officers. Dutchess County Weekend at the Fire Academy is one of the most attended and longest held events.

Attendees gathered on Friday night for dinner and an orientation session was given by the weekend organizer Kyle Pottenburgh.

Three cars damaged in accident Town of Newburgh, NY - Three cars were damaged in an accident on Carter Avenue on March 25, 2013. Middlehope Fire Department arrived to find one SUV uprighted after a rollover. A second SUV was involved in the crash as well as minor damage to a contractor's van parked in a driveway.

The drivers did not seem to sustain any serious injuries, but the Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services were certainly prepared. All hazards were cleaned up and units returned soon thereafter.

Fully involved structure fire in Buffalo On April 5, 2013 at approximately 9:30 p.m., Buffalo Fire Alarm received several calls reporting a structure fire in the vicinity of Gittere Street and Walden Avenue on the city's east side.

First in Engine 31 arrived at 127 Gittere and reported a fully involved two and one half story wood frame with an exposure problem at 129 Gittere.

They immediately stretched off

two-two and a half inch hose lines and began to protect the exposure.

Ladder 14 requested an extra two engines and one ladder truck to the scene.

Several more hose lines were advanced into the exposure building and firefighters were able to

limit the damage to the exposure building. Firefighters used one tower ladder, two-two and a half inch and three-one and three quarter inch hand lines. Crews completed operations in just under two hours.

Damage was listed as $35,000 to 127 Gittere and $5,000 to 129 Gittere. The cause is under investigation.

Tupper Lake battles fast mover BOB ROOT

Brush fire in Middlehope Middlehope, NY - On the afternoon of March 29th, Middlehope Fire Department was toned out for a brush fire. Hundreds of feet of hose were pulled to extinguish the blaze. Assisting at the scene was Milton Fire Department.

At 11:26 p.m. on March 14th, Tupper Lake Fire and EMS were paged out to a working structure fire on Cedar Street in the village.

Arriving crews found a garage fully involved with extension to an occupied home. A second alarm was requested for anther engine and more manpower. Piercefield VFD responded mutual aid with their cascade and manpower.

Crews entered the home to attempt at an interior attack. Little headway was made due to the fire moving fast overhead on the second floor.

The 100 year old structure had multiple roofs on it, which allowed the fire to travel freely overhead, so

crews were pulled from the structure and fought the fire from the exterior. Weather at the time was 3 degrees and it was decided to call for more mutual aid.

Long Lake VFD was requested to respond to cover the Tupper Lake station. They were moved up to the scene and Saranac Lake was requested to respond with an engine and manpower to cover the station.

Tower 164 was special called to respond to it's first worker. After moving some vehicles, 164 was set

up and used to attack the fire from above and start pulling the structure apart to get at hot spots.

As the night wore on, crews were able to enter the structure and extinguish the remaining pockets of fire. Mutual aid companies were released and the scene by 5:30 a.m.

While standing by, Saranac Lake was paged to respond to a possible second structure fire in Tupper Lake, but luckily turned out to be a dog house that had been ignited by carelessly discarded hot ashes.

All Tupper Lake equipment was back in service by 7:30.

Six displaced after blaze

Fire traps two occupants A rapidly spreading ďŹ re trapped two occupants in their home at 190 Mill Road in the Town of Rhinebeck early Sunday morning, April 7th.

The Rhinebeck Fire Department was dispatched for a reported structure ďŹ re at 190 Mill Road at 2:36 a.m. Additional dispatch reported the caller was attempting to remove his mother from the house and the rapidly spreading ďŹ re was preventing him from doing so. First on scene NY State Troopers Russell Wright and Chad Greer were able to safely remove the JUMP TO FILE # elderly woman and 040713105 the son followed them out.

Upon his arrival, Rhinebeck Chief Rick Dorrer requested a second alarm and additional tankers to the scene to assist in a water relay. He was then informed by state police that all occupants were now safely out of the home.

Fire operations began with an interior attack, but as the ďŹ re on the second oor grew in intensity, all ďŹ reďŹ ghters were removed to the exterior of the home and used four hose streams to darken the main body of ďŹ re.

They continued with interior ďŹ re control and extinguishment. Because of the set back from the road, more than 2,000 feet of ďŹ ve inch hose was used to supply water to the scene of the ďŹ re from the responding mutual aid departments. There were 70 ďŹ reďŹ ghters on the scene assisting with ďŹ re control, extinguishment and EMS operations. The ďŹ re was deemed under control at 4:15 a.m. and the last Rhinebeck apparatus left the scene at 10:45 a.m.

The occupants and homeowners were Gary McLaughlin, 60, and his mother Audrey McLaughlin age 92.

Mrs. McLaughlin was transported

by NDP to Northern Dutchess Hospital for evaluation.

The house sustained major ďŹ re damage and the Dutchess County Fire Investigation team was on scene and determined the ďŹ re to be accidental in origin and most likely caused by a faulty chimney. There were smoke detectors in the home, but they failed to operate due to apparent battery failure.

Assisting the Rhinebeck Fire Department at the scene were the Hillside, Roosevelt, Rhinecliff, West

Clinton, Ulster Hose #5, Milan and Red Hook Fire Departments.

Also on the scene were Northern Dutchess paramedics, NY State Police, Dutchess County Sheriffs, and the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Team.

Buffalo ďŹ reďŹ ghters of the 7th Battalion 3rd Platoon were called out to battle a structure ďŹ re at 807 E. Delavan Ave. on the city's east side on April 12th.

This ďŹ re was JUMP TO FILE # dispatched right after 041213103 the ďŹ re on Herman St. An additional ladder company was sent to ďŹ ll in for Rescue 1 and a chief to ďŹ ll in for the division chief operating at the Herman St. blaze.

Five adults and a child were displaced and the Red Cross was called in to assist the occupants of the two and a half story frame dwelling.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the ďŹ re is under investigation. The damage was undetermined.

Firefighter injured at fire in Buffalo Buffalo firefighters of the 6th Battalion 1st Platoon were called out to battle a structure fire at 141 Benzinger St. in Buffalo's Lovejoy Section on April 9th.

The one and a half story frame was well involved on arrival. The flames cracked some windows on the neighboring school and damaged 139 Benzinger St. The alarm was sounded around 4:15 a.m. Firefighters used

The Red Cross was called for two adults and five children.

Damage was extensive with 141 Benzinger at $75,000 to the building and $25,000 to the con-

tents. 139 Benzinger had $10,000 to the building and $5,000 to the contents. The school at 1133 E. Lovejoy had $2000 in damage to the windows.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
