Info: Chief Michael J. Reddy Initial Summary: Firefighter Woehlke passed away from injuries sustained in a commercial structure fire at a strip mall. Woehlke was caught and trapped when the roof of the structure collapsed. Initial reports indicate that a Mayday call was made shortly after the collapse. Further details regarding the incident are pending and it remains under investigation by authorities. Incident Location: 6581 N Wayne RD, Westland, MI 48185 Washington: Albert A. Nejmeh, 59 Rank: Firefighter Incident Date: May 14, 2013 Death Date: May 14, 2013 Fire Department: Tacoma Fire Department Fire Dept. Two alarm building fire On May 23rd at around 12:30 a.m., the Columbus Ohio Division of Fire took calls reporting a fire at 525 Lazelle Road. Station 33 arrived in just a few minutes, as the station is right down the street. Crews had heavy fire in a one story strip mall housing several businesses. No injuries were reported. JIM WHITE

Coshocton Fire Department fights bedroom fire Coshocton, OH. On Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at about 11:40 p.m. the Coshocton Fire Department was paged out to a house fire at Vine St. and Cambridge Road. Ladder 302 and Engine 303 responded to the fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found a two story wood frame home with heavy smoke showing. Ladder 302 established a water supply at a nearby hydrant and a hand line was pulled to start an aggressive interior attack on

an upstairs bedroom. The fire was quickly contained to the bedroom with some extension into the attic. Ladder 302 laddered the roof and two firefighters established a vent in the roof. The whole house was ventilated by a positive pressure fan as firefighters performed overhaul to look for additional extension
and extinguish any hot spots. The house suffered fire damage to one bedroom with smoke and water damage throughout the home. The probable cause was electrical in nature. Assisting on scene was the Coshocton County Sheriff’s Office, Coshocton County EMS, and the Coshocton County R.E.A.C.T.

Fully engulfed upon arrival The Columbus Division of Fire Alarm Office received the report of a fire at 2873 Cleveland Ave around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16th. According to firefighters on the scene, this occupied residential structure was fully engulfed on arrival with a working fire assignment struck. All hands worked quickly to bring the stubborn fire under control and the American Red Cross was called upon to help the occupants of the structure.

West Lafayette responds to a mobile home fire Coshocton, OH. On Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at about 12:30 p.m. the West Lafayette and Conesville Fire Departments were paged out to a Linton Township Rd 146, to a mobile home fire. While fire crews went en route to the scene, heavy smoke was visible in the sky form several miles out. With that in mind, the Three Rivers Fire Department was requested to aid with manpower and a tanker. First units on scene found the mobile home roof down to the base, heavy fire, and black smoke. A hand line was put into

operation to start knocking down the fire. As this was going on, other fire crew members started setting up the portable water tank, and the first load of water was off loaded in to the tank to establish a water supply. With the majority of the flames knocked down, holes were chopped into the roof to give access for the hand line to the fire trapped under the roof. The home owner brought a
tractor to the scene to hook up a chain to the roof and pulled it off the base. This exposed the base of the trailer and allowed firefighters to take care of the remaining hot spots. The house was a total loss and the probable cause was the use of a power saw during demolition of the mobile home. Fast knock down for Columbus The Columbus Division of Fire Alarm Office received the report of a fire at 785 Joyful Street around 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 24th. Arriving crews from CFD L-12 and Franklin Twp E-192 declared a working fire and then initiated a fast knock down preventing further extension within the residence.
Cleveland, OH. The Cleveland Fire Department's fire boat Anthony J. Celebrezze led the procession of 14 tall ships into Cleveland Harbor on the 1st US stop of the Great Lakes Tall Ships Tour on July 3rd. The tour is an annual event that includes all five Great Lakes and ports in the United States and Canada. This year's festival is special because it will commemorate the Battle of Lake Erie which took place in 1813 and was a deciding event which helped the United States win the War of 1812. Cleveland was the first US Port to host the tall ships.

Coshocton battles well involved residential blaze Coshocton, OH. On Thursday, June 6, 2013, at about 1:30 a.m. the Coshocton Fire Department was paged out to a house fire on the 900 block of Vine St. Ladder 302 and Engine 303 responded. Firefighters found a one story wood frame home fully involved. Tones were set off again to advise off duty firefighters of the working fire and to report to their station. Exposure issues on both sides of the home were a problem. Ladder 302 established a water supply at a nearby hydrant, and hand lines were pulled to start an exterior attack. With two hand

lines working, the ladder set its outriggers and put the ladder pipe into operation. Flames were shooting through the roof and as high as 30 feet into the air. Engine 305 established a water supply from another hydrant and pulled a hand line to the rear of the home to continue the exterior attack. The surround and drown operation was successful in knocking down the bulk of the fire to allow firefighters a chance
to make entry and to hit the hot spots. Fire damage to the D side exposure was kept to a minimum. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to aid local officials in the investigation. The house was a total loss and the probable cause was suspicious in nature and remains under investigation. Sugarcreek, OH. A fire in the finishing room at Weaver Furniture caused several hundred thousand dollars damage and forced the temporary closure of the business on June 21st. A neighbor who saw smoke and flames dialed 911 at 4:24 p.m. and then alerted the unsuspecting sales staff and several customers. Firefighters from the Sugarcreek Fire Department started attacking the flames with two and a half inch attack lines and removed uninvolved five gallon pales of flammable finish. They were soon joined by Dover E-201 and Baltic E-901. The fire was upgraded to a second alarm around 4:40 p.m. A major concern was that the business was located in a unhydranted area which required a tanker shuttle to supply water. Tankers from Sugarcreek, Dover, Dundee, New Philadelphia, York Township, Baltic, and Strasburg filled at a hydrant located in the parking lot of the Dutch Valley Restaurant. Tanker crews had to contend with congested parking lots and heavy traffic on State Route 39. All water used to fight the blaze was supplied by the tankers, which were running on a 1.1 mile loop from the hydrant. Troopers from the Ohio Highway Patrol, Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office and

Sugarcreek Police Department assisted with traffic control. Another concern was heat exhaustion due to temperatures which reached 90 degrees. Medics from the Swiss Valley Ambulance District monitored firefighters and the New Philadelphia based mobile canteen unit from the Salvation Army maintained rehab. Additionally, firefighters were rotated on the fire ground. By 6 p.m., the blaze was declared under control and mutual aid companies began to be released. During overhaul and the initial investigation, it was noted that the firewall, which separated the finishing room from the much larger showroom, was credited with saving the structure and several million dollars of furniture. The 9000 square foot finishing room and its inventory of solid oak furniture was lost. Firefighters from Uhrichsville, Bakersville, and East Holmes Fire District manned stations. In all, it was estimated that over 60 firefighters were in service during the blaze. -DAVID SCHLOSSER

Firefighters climb equivalent of 110 flights to honor FDNY fallen heroes The Third Annual Lancaster 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster, PA. Participants will climb steps at Clipper Magazine Stadium multiple times for a total of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the World Trade Towers. Each climb is hosted and managed by local firefighters or people with an interest in ensuring that the 343 firefighters are not forgotten and to support the families of the fallen. All participants will receive a photo and badge of one of the fallen heroes of September 11th. A total of 343 individuals can participate in each event. Registration fees will be directed to the NFFF to assist the surviving families and coworkers of those firefighters killed on September 11, 2001. “The 9-11 Memorial Stair Climbs are a tremendous way to honor those heroes by completing the symbolic climb that they could not finish,” said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, executive director of the NFFF. “These climbs are also a way to let the families know the legacies of their loved ones are remembered by so many in the fire service.” The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs are inspired by stair climbs that first took place in Denver in 2005. Small tractor drawn aerial for the kids When firefighters at Plain Township Fire Department were thinking about what to create next for their next annual Open House/Muster, Dan Gilmore had a long-time idea he was ready to act on. He stated on his facebook page, "I have always wanted to build a small tractor drawn aerial as a kids ride for the antique fire truck club I am a member of. I decided it would also make a great attraction for our fire department open house". He located and purchased the

tillerman's cab, which was on a 1968 Seagrave that had once been Truck 6 of the Cincinnati Fire Department. While there, he purchased the fairing and unfortunately didn't have the ability to cut and transport the tip section of that aerial. He was fortunate to find a second Seagrave TDA aerial three miles from his home in Ross
County. That tip had once been on an a 1950's Seagrave 85' tiller which had been part of the Columbus Fire Department. The trailer frame was extended by a buddy of mine who is a welder and the rest of the work was completed by Dan with help from other Plain Township firefighters while at the firehouse. VENDOR SPOTLIGHT The Firefighter Cancer Foundation (FFCF) and Tempest Technology Corporation Join Forces The Firefighter Cancer Foundation (FFCF) and Tempest Technology Corporation originally discovered they had a very similar mission during a recent FDIC Conference: Eliminating cancer rates among fire fighters. Since 1987, Tempest Technology Corporation has been a leader in the development of innovative ventilation tools for fire fighting and industrial work environments. Tempest started out producing inflator fans for hot air balloonists and now manufactures a wide variety of ventilation tools used by fire fighters around the world, making hazardous environments safer. The technique of Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) utilizes high output fans to clear burning buildings of heat, smoke and CANCER causing, air-borne toxins and introduce clean fresh air. PPV is commonly used during post-knock-
down, when fire fighters tend to remove their SCBA’s to conduct the final overhaul, exposing themselves to a deadly array of air-borne chemicals and toxins still present after the fire is out. Tempest is now the leading manufacturer of the fans/blowers that fire fighters use to implement PPV. Tempest hopes their partnership with FFCF will raise awareness in the fire service community that their PPV fans drastically reduce exposure to cancer. You can probably imagine that if you are a flight nurse assigned to an emergency medical helicopter ambulance, it is likely that the calls you respond to are for individuals who are seriously injured or sick. Many wind up dead from their injuries or complications. So it is with this in mind that I advise the reader that if you have a sensitive comprehension to reading about graphic material, this book may not be for you! I have found by talking with
many people who are readers, that some cannot stomach the content of some books even though in most cases there are no accompanying photos. The author became a flight nurse in 1987 after leaving a full time job as an emergency room nurse. After many years as a flight nurse she later became a full time, certified registered nurse anesthetist. She accidently found out one day after stopping to visit her old quarters, that her book was required reading for all new flight nurses at CALSTAR (California Shock/Trauma Air Rescue), which is an air ambulance in the San Francisco Bay area. You will notice that the current book is updated and expanded so there was a previous printing but it was sold out. There are 16 action packed chapters which hold multiple incidents including the earthquake in 1989 (during the baseball world series coverage) and a major, fatal Oakland brush fire. Scoreboard fire at Columbus Crew stadium delays match
Columbus, OH. The evening of April 27th started out as usual for the Columbus Crew professional soccer team as they took the field and began warming up for the match against their division rivals, DC United. Fans were entering the stadium and goalies were practicing when at 7:09 p.m. things went drastically wrong. A small fire was detected flickering in the mesh speaker covering on the top of the scoreboard with minimal smoke and continued to grow into an inferno as the minutes ticked by. Quick acting Columbus Crew section attendants moved fans out of the area and police and security blocked the deck immediately below the scoreboard as they waited for the Columbus Fire Department to arrive. The nearest station was a few blocks away, but apparatus had to contend with game day traffic. The first Columbus units to arrive were Medic 18 and E-18 and were escorted through the packed parking lot by Ohio Highway Patrol at 6:14 p.m. The initial size up confirmed the working score-

board fire about 75 feet above the ground. A series of alarms were issued and more Columbus units converged on the stadium. E-13 established a water supply and laid supply hose to a Columbus ladder, positioned itself behind the scoreboard just outside the stadium. Rescue 2, E-7, E-16 and host support units filtered in to provide support. As the ladder began flowing water on the blaze, E-18’s crew hand jacked a two and a half inch attack up three flights of steps and set up for an attack from the front on the mezzanine below. L-1 also gained entry to the stadium and set-up behind the DC United Goal. Ladder 1 raised its ladder as a precaution since the Columbus ladder that was positioned outside was having trouble hitting the fire in the scoreboard from behind. By 7:25 p.m., E-18’s crew was flowing water from their attack line, as firefighters climbed the outside ladder and began cutting

the back of the scoreboard way with K-12 saws. Once it was opened, the outside ladder knocked down the deep routed fire and had extinguished it by 7:35 p.m. Soon after, Columbus firefighters were able to enter the scoreboard and began overhaul and looking for hot spots. In appreciation of their quick knockdown of the fire, fans who were in the stadium stood and gave the Columbus Fire Department a standing ovation as the Columbus Crew Nordecker fan section began beating their drums and chanting CFD. The fire was declared out within 30 minutes. The match was delayed an hour and played without a PA system. By the end of the night, the 15,000 fans who were present not only got to see Columbus’s finest in action, but also got to see a great match which resulted in a 3-0 Columbus Crew win over DC United. It was later reported that a faulty sub-woofer in the scoreboard was the cause for the blaze.

Jackson Township battles house fire Coshocton, OH. On March 22, 2013, at about 11:40 a.m., the Jackson Township Fire Department was paged out to a residence on Coshocton County Rd. 23 for a kitchen fire. The caller told the 911 dispatcher JUMP TO FILE # that they had been 062113119 cooking on the stove and now the kitchen was on fire. First units on scene found that was at least half of the house fully involved. A call was quickly placed to dispatch for a second alarm assignment. Firefighters quickly started an exterior attack on the fire. Second alarm units began arriving with manpower and tankers. The additional manpower was put to work on pulling additional hand lines and working on the exterior. As the fire was knocked down, hand lines were advanced into the interior of the structure to take care of the hot spots. Overhaul operations followed looking for extension. Second alarm units included the Three Rivers Fire Department, Walhonding Valley Fire Department, and Coshocton Fire Department. The house was a total loss.
