1st Responder News Correspondent Receives Prestigious IAFF Award TROY, NY - During the Troy Firefighters Local 86 Retirement Dinner held on April 8th, one of our longtime Senior Correspondents, Jeffrey Belschwinder, was recog nized for receiving Second Place for Best News Story from the 2021 International Association of Fire Fighters Media Awards Contest for a story he wrote for our publication. The story, " Second-Alarm Flouse Fire Claims Life of Child in Troy", was featured in our June 2021 New York edition, and like many of Jeffs stories, it also made the front cover. According to the IAFF website, the IAFF Media Awards Contest recognizes affiliates for their best work in communicating with their members and the public, and hon ors reporting and photography that best portray professional fire fight ers and paramedics as dedicated all hazards responders. The IAFF Media Awards Contest also helps create a greater awareness of the important and dangerous work IAFF members in the United States and Canada do to keep the public

safe. This nationally held contest is very competitive, and to receive an award is a great honor. In a Facebook post, Jeff said "I would like to thank all of my followers and fam ily for their continued support. I will continue to do my best to serve the public with covering our emer gency responders in the area. I would also like to thank my signifi cant other, Katelyn. She is my rock. Thank you for always putting up with me running out the door day and night, late nights editing pho tos, and the radios on in the house all the time." On behalf of all of us at 1st Re sponder News, we want to say con gratulations Jeff! We are so proud of your amazing accomplishment and appreciate your continued ded ication to our publication.
I met Max during a photo shoot with the Reedsville Fire Co. of Mifflin County in the beginning of April. The photo shoot was set up because I took notice that all of Reedsville's appara tus have an Autism ribbon on the front. After making the arrangements, the members contacted Max's family to have him visit during the shoot. It was not until then, I found out the story on the ribbons. Max was diagnosed with Autism at 21-months-old; he is now 14. About five years ago, his mom, Amanda, and his dad decided to make Autism Aware ness ribbons to place on the apparatus at the Burnham Fire Company to show support and raise awareness. Word quickly spread around the county, and soon requests came in wanting ribbons for their apparatus. Max is a huge fan of fire appa ratus. When asking him what
piece is his favorite, he replied "all of them". With an answer like that, I knew I was in good company being somewhat crazed about fire apparatus my self. With April being National Autism Awareness month, each of the 19 stations in Mifflin County look forward to Max paying them a visit and decid ing which rig or rigs will have the ribbon applied to it. The Junction Fire Company was my next visit that day and after telling them about Max, they proceeded to tell me that Max and his dad will arrive and go directly to the back of the sta tion to where his supplies are kept and get to work on decid ing which rig the ribbon will be applied to. After meeting Max and getting his story, he requested that I take his photo with each of the Reedsville apparatus. It was a small price to pay for meeting this celebrity. I would quickly like to thanks Max, his family, the Reedsville Fire Company, and each of the stations in Mifflin County that participate with this every year. - DALE FEEHRER

Family of Five Survives House Explosion in Plum Borough PLUM, PA - Just before 11:30 PM. on April 22nd, fire crews were dispatched to the 5000 block of Hialeah Drive for a reported house explosion. Seconds later, crews were informed that county 911 was receiving multiple calls for the house also being on fire. Crews arrived to find the home fully involved with expo sure problems on each side, with a large debris field on the street. Command advised dispatch that the residents were unaccounted for and master streams were being set up to knock down fire on the exposure homes. A few minutes later, command advised that all five residents had been accounted for and were being treated by EMS on scene. Crews quickly knocked down the fire on the exposure homes and then began knocking down the fire on what was left of the home. The fire was quickly placed under control within about 15 min utes, but crews remained on scene for several hours. Several sur rounding homes were evacuated as a precaution until gas company representatives arrived. Two adults and three young children were inside the home when it exploded. One child with burns was flown as a precaution to Children’s Hospital, and the other family members were transported to local hospitals for lacerations and bums. Everyone is expected to make a full recovery. The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the Pennsyl vania Public Utility Commission’s safety division, along with the Al legheny County Fire Marshal’s Of fice and other agencies.

T h ird-A la rm D estroys A lle n to w n D w e llin g and D isplaces R esidents ALLENTOWN, PA - On April 19th shortly before 6:00 A.M., the fire department was dispatched to a fire call at 376 1/2 Washington St. This middle of the row, threestory dwelling had a fast-moving fire and heavy smoke conditions. Com pounding this situa tion were wires on fire and arcing in front of the fire building. The blaze went to three alarms. The dwelling was occupied by two women and four children. Neighbors were instrumental in aiding a woman and two children to escape out of a second floor rear window. They were then re united with the other family members who had already found their way out. Unfortunately, the family dog was found deceased. All the occupants were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest for a smoke inhalation checkup. The family was also as sisted by the Red Cross. The fire department was able to make good progress in control ling the blaze with no lateral spread. The dwelling was re ported to have smoke detectors. KEN SNYDER - KEN SNYDER

SHAMOKIN, PA - On May 9th, Shamokin firefighters were once again called to 7th and Pine in the city for a working fire. Units arrived to find the build ing, which had previously burned back in January of this year, well involved with heavy fire showing from the rear floors of the struc-

ture. Due to the state of the building from the previous fire, the blaze was mainly fought from the exte rior with master streams from

E lectrical Fire Damages Several Unoccupied Homes in Kulpmont KULPMONT, PA - On Friday, May 6th, a working fire was struck for Spruce Street in Kulpmont (Northumberland County). Captain 25 was in the area and quickly con firmed a working fire with a thermal column from a double home under construction starting to spread to a neighboring structure. Crews arrived and found the double well involved and spreading due to the closeness of the homes. During the blaze water supply was

hindered when civilians drove over the supply line, causing it to rup ture. The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal was on scene and found the cause to be electrical in nature, and having started in 734 before spreading to the other half of the double at 732 and then jumping
to 736. All the homes involved were currently not lived in, either due to residents recently moving out or being under construction. Sate police were also reviewing home surveillance video in the area in attempts to identify the drivers and what possible charges they may face for driving over the hose and hindering operation.

S e c o n d -A la rm F ire D e stro ys C o m m e rc ia l G arage in C a ta sa u q u a CATASAUQUA, PA - On May 12th at 12:53 A.M., the Lehigh County 911 Center dis patched the Catasauqua and North Catasauqua Fire Depart ments to a commercial structure fire located at 261 Race St. in the bor ough. Upon arrival. Chief Flertzog re ported a fully in volved garage fire. This was a onestory metal clad garage used by Star Disposal and sev eral garbage trucks were on fire. An immediate second-alarm was requested, and as the fire was pro gressing, several minor explo sions were heard inside the fire building. The fire was controlled by a ladder pipe and several hand and blitz lines. As the contaminated water ran onto the street (ie. diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, garbage waste etc.), the Lehigh County Haz-Mat unit was de ployed to mitigate the situation. nearly 200 tracks ending in 1985. They had been located in the Syra cuse, NY area and started out as a motor track company. It later started building fire apparatus, and even built its own chassis. These apparatus for Hie most part were sold to smaller fire departments. They were attractive looking tracks built on both commer cial and custom chassis. To me, they resembled another brand of apparatus but I am not suggesting that this was on purpose, it is only my observation. There are eight chapters: 19091924, The Industrial Revolution Cre ates a New Business; 1925-1932, Fire Apparatus Division Takes Charge; 1933-1939, Motor Tracks Depart as Streamlining Arrives; 1940-1947, The New Corporate Identity as Sanford Goes to War; 1948-1959, Filling the Needs of Loyal Customers; 19601964, Revitalizing a Proud Name; 1965-1985, Building for the Future and 1925-1946, Sanford Delivery Lists. Sanford was a localized company that sold mostly in New York State, with a few sold in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. From 1943 to 1945 they also had a contract with the U.S. Navy, delivering 10 units to different parts of the country. There are well over 100 photos of commercial trucks and all types of apparatus, including besides pumpers, mini pumpers, tankers an in-plant fire track, and three aerials. I remember twin custom pumpers with large water tanks at the DeCou Hose Company in Hamilton Town ship, Mercer County, NJ, that I pho tographed when they were new, and they were two of my favorites because they were attractive. Unfortunately, they are not among the photos in this book, but nevertheless there are many others that the reader will enjoy. If you are a person that enjoys history and apparatus, this book is a must for you if you don’t already have it!
