Client Testimonials I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself - horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now, over 4 years later. You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself. You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig. – Jeff D.

I hired Ely to assist with my parents estate planning and it was a wise decision. He is a true expert in navigating through complex elder care law and procedures. His guidance was invaluable and his communication excellent. I would strongly recommend his services.

Wartburg kicked off its 150th anniversary with an event-filled Fall Festival on Saturday, October 11 from 10 AM to 4 PM on their beautiful 34-acre campus in Mt. Vernon. It featured musical recitals in Wartburg’s historical chapel from the Concordia Conservatory and the Mt. Vernon Mayor’s Choir. There was an abundance of children’s activities such as hourly magic shows, Didi the clown; and science demonstrations and games sponsored by The Future Society. Attendees could participate in a drum circle, see what local vendors were offering, and enjoy grilled food or Caribbean cuisine by one of the local restaurants serving food that day– all for the enjoyment of Wartburg residents, their families and the people of Mt. Vernon and surrounding Westchester communities. Nearly 300 people attended. “This festival was held to honor our past, celebrate the present and build for the future,” said David Gentner, president and CEO of Wartburg. “It was a success beyond our expectations and we are extremely pleased with the positive feedback we received from those attending the festival.” Those who joined in the Fall Festival fun could try their dance moves in the meadow with a Zumba demonstration or, if feeling lucky, there were raffle drawings for fabulous prizes donated by businesses throughout the county. And any child who participated in any one of the fun games provided had the chance to win sports equipment or one of five brand new bicycles, generously donated by Wartburg’s CEO, David Gentner. Wartburg honored the past by hosting a new Fall Festival, slightly different from the ones held for over 100 years on their Mt. Vernon campus, although still community focused. “Wartburg is proud to bring together the local communities in

celebration of Wartburg’s history and mission to provide comprehensive services to nurture body, mind and spirit. And there was certainly plenty of high spirits at our Fall Festival,” said Angela Ciminello, director of development at Wartburg. In 1866, Wartburg began as the Wartburg Orphan Farm School and provided a safe haven for children until the late 1970’s. To honor these alumni, the festival included a special chapel service and reception for former Wartburg Orphan Farm School residents who embraced, reminisced and scanned old photos from times past…and some even found their younger versions among the array of pictures. The day also included the unveiling of the newly-named Dale and Yvonne Gatz Conference Center, named after Wartburg’s 8th president and his wife, an active volunteer during their tenure. There was also a tree dedicated, named in honor of Wartburg’s most valued volunteers, the Board of Directors. Wartburg is an internationally-recognized, award-winning provider of comprehensive senior services, including independent living, assisted living, Alzheimer’s/dementia care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, adult day services and hospice care. Its 34-acre campus in Mount Vernon serves seniors and their families in Westchester and the New York Metro area. Wartburg’s nursing home has been recognized by U. S. News & World Report as among the “Best Nursing Homes in New York State” for the third straight consecutive year, in 2013. Over the past few years, Wartburg has launched an ambitious building expansion program, including the Friedrichs Residence, providing affordable housing for seniors with 61 independent living apartments, and a rehabilitation and adult day services center of excellence both opened in 2013.

Eat healthy at Hanukkah and don’t worry about kvetching later Kugel, traditionally made with potatoes and egg noodles, is enjoyed throughout the year. To make it healthier, replace those refined egg noodles with a whole wheat egg noodle. Whole wheat noodles are less processed, and contain more protein and fiber, keeping you fuller, longer. In place of eggs, try egg whites (which are virtually cholesterol-free) or egg substitutes. Sweeten your dish with grated or chopped apples. Going for the healthy gelt What’s Hanukkah without gelt, the chocolate coins used when playing dreidel, or for that matter, chocolate dreidels? Not fun, that’s what but guess what? Chocolate is healthy…when you choose the right one. Instead of milk chocolate, choose dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 65 percent or higher but limit how much you eat because it still has significant calories.

Hanukkah is a time of joy and family celebration, fun and traditional foods. Here’s the thing: Delicious Hanukkah foods can represent serious temptation for anyone. However, following our tips can help you succeed in keeping your waistline intact during these wonderful eight nights. The miracle of oil Of course, the miracle of oil is celebrated each day by cooking a variety of foods in oil, including latkes (grated potato cakes) and sufganiyot (donuts). While certain oils are healthy, others offer greater risks to your health. Healthy or not, oil is high in calories and fat, meaning that even a small amount can put you over your calorie needs for the day. Try these tips to keep it healthy: • The word "light" often appears on oil labels, but it refers to the oil's taste, not its calorie or fat content. • Cook with healthy oils such as olive, canola and peanut. These are high in monounsaturated fats, which have been shown to improve cholesterol levels. • Take a few extra steps to reduce the amount of oil in the foods. Drain fried foods on paper towels after cooking to keep the taste and tradition, but reduce the overall fat and calories you consume. Alternative recipes Latkes made with eggplant or zucchini will add color, variety and health to the table. Or try sweet potatoes, which pack more vitamin A and fiber, instead of regular (white) potatoes. Serve your latkes with reduced-fat or fat-free sour cream (instead of the full fat varieties) or unsweetened applesauce (instead of applesauce made with added sugar) to reduce the amount of fat and calories you consume.

Westchester NCNW - Taking it all in Stride By Viviana DeCohen

On October 18, 2014 like hundreds of others, the Westchester Section of the National Council of Negro Women led by Vi Lynch and Juel Hodge, met at Manhattanville College in Purchase to begin their “Strides against Breast Cancer Walk.” Like many that were there, they have made this walk countless of times, but this walk was different. This walk not only honored the many, too many, fallen heroes and conquering survivors; but it honored two of its very own members. This walk was for Frances and Julia, two very dedicated members who survived, conquered, and thus far buried the beast called cancer.

Led by our Team Captain Regina Carter, the group was happy to include family and

friends who raised both money and awareness at their various locations and houses of worship.

Motivated by the wonderful band and the exuberant cheerleaders, the group which meets monthly

at the Mount Vernon Public Library, First Saturday monthly from 10-12 noon embarked upon the challenge to make Strives and Strides against Breast Cancer. The group hosts events throughout the county that seeks to make a better world for Women, Families and Communities through Academic and Health education and Economic empowerment. They are most proud of their “Think Pink” Cancer Awareness events and their Educational as well as Financial summits that seek to empower the youth for academic excellence and bring Financial freedom to women. Women of all nationalities are free to join because together we can all Strive for a better tomorrow.

Home for the Holidays By Viviana DeCohen

Being away from home is difficult in itself, but being away from home for the holidays can be very disheartening. The holidays for many of us is a gathering of long -time friends and family members both near and far. No one wants to be left out of the sights and sounds of the season; the additional pounds put on by our favorite dishes, the anticipation of the ringing doorbell and the mailman bearing additional cards, and of course the yummy fruit cake that aunt Hilda sends year after year. It may not be possible for your family member to be home for the holidays but you can bring a piece of home to them wherever they are, whether hospital, rehab or nursing home. Bringing familiar items from home should be arranged with the staff, but it is often encouraged. Include a downscaled version of holiday memorabilia and include the family member in its arrangement if possible to keep it a family affair.

Do not forget to bring family photos from last years’ event; that always evokes laughter and fond memories. Cozy familiar items like a decorative pillow or throw can be soothing as well. Of course you must bring and share aunt Hilda’s fruit cake. Be certain to ask staff about food items being brought in but if there are no restrictions, bring what is familiar for both your family member and you. Do inquire about the possible utilization of a private room for a small or large gathering that may or may not already be decorated. Make your request early so that you may attain the date that you desire. If you would like to bring your loved one home for the holidays then consider Adult Nanny Care through the Visiting Development Care Group. We are here to help your family member get back in the swing of things and ready for the festivities, because everyone should be Home for the Holidays.

10 holiday gifts that will make the senior in your life feel special ■ Celebrate the reason for the season. Faith and holiday programs bring much joy to the lives of older adults. Be flexible and change traditions if necessary. For instance, attend early Christmas Eve service, not midnight Mass. ■ Shop — but not until you drop! Conditions such as macular degeneration, which lead to poor eyesight and the inability to drive, can make shopping difficult for older adults. Why not make it a special event to look forward to by taking your older adult to a favorite store or make online shopping an experience he or she won’t forget? Tune into seniors’ limitations and don’t overdo. ■ Focus on others. Volunteering to assist others can help seniors focus on someone else’s needs other than their own. Get the entire family involved in gathering supplies for a homeless shelter or serving a holiday meal. ■ Stay connected. The holidays can be a sad time for seniors separated from their families. Help an older adult connect with loved ones far away with the latest technology, such as Skype. ■ Give the gift of time. Sometimes all an older adult wants is companionship, whether it’s a few moments of the day or a driving tour to view holiday lights. If you are short of time, consider the assistance of a family friend or neighbor.

You likely won’t find these gifts on the holiday wish list of your favorite senior, but they will mean so much to them. Even better, you don’t even need a big budget or a creative gift list to make the senior loved one feel special this holiday season. ■ Keep food traditions alive. Food can play such an important role in the holidays for seniors. If an older adult can no longer cook the traditional holiday meal, why not offer to carry on the tradition, asking the senior to help where he or she can help with a nice Hanukkah dinner? ■ Make a special delivery. Arthritis can make wrapping those holiday presents a challenge; so too can shipping gifts to loved ones afar. Why not schedule a gift-wrapping afternoon, complete with hot chocolate, cookies and plenty of family stories? ■ Deck the halls. Carting out those favorite holiday ornaments isn’t always possible for an older adult with a bad back or weak muscles. Neither is stringing the lights or hanging the ornaments. Make it a great multigenerational activity by sending over the grandkids or great-grandchildren. ■ Send holiday greetings. The handwritten Christmas card is one of the most popular traditions of this generation of seniors. Why not lend a hand and offer to spend an afternoon writing greetings? If that’s not possible, an online photo greeting card can be just as good (and save the cost of cards and stamps). ■ Sing along. Caroling is a fun activity for most any age. Why not get a group of your senior loved one’s friends together to serenade other older adults in an assisted living facility or nursing home?

My Second Home wins a National Award On Saturday, October 11, 2014, My Second Home of Family Services of Westchester, Inc. (FSW) received the 2014 Outstanding Adult Day Services Award from the National Adult Day Services Association at their annual Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. Housed in the same building as the Mt. Kisco Child Care Center, My Second Home provides a safe, nurturing and home-like environment where older adults can continue to find meaning and dignity in their daily lives through stimulating activities, wellness programs, personal care, excellent nutrition and “living room to living room” transportation. What sets My Second Home apart from other programs is its unique intergenerational component, which brings children from the Mt. Kisco Child Care Center and adults together on a daily basis to share in activities and forge relationships that promote mutual understanding

Rina Bellamy, Director of My Second Home, accepted the award alongside FSW’s President and CEO Susan B. Wayne and staff members, Diana Forte and Margaret De Rose. In other exciting news, FSW is pleased to announce that Rebecca Lippel will be joining our staff as Director of the Lanza Family Center for All Ages, our new intergenerational facility currently under construction in White Plains. The new Center, which is modeled after My Second Home and will include early childhood classrooms, a youth center, and older adult wing as well as shared space for intergenerational programming, is scheduled to open early in 2015. Ms. Lippel, a Gerontologist with many years of experience working with older adults and managing program operations, will join FSW in November 2014 to ensure that we are fully prepared to welcome our first program participants.

Five Star Premier Residences held a Professional “Speed Networking” Event Five Star Premier Residences held its first “Speed Networking” event on Tuesday, September 23, 2014. The event, which was attended by approximately 30 social workers and discharge planners in the area, was a success. Guests enjoyed hors-d’oeuvres, wine, cheese and crackers while waiting for everyone to arrive. Logistically, a long table was set up in a way that two chairs were facing one another. The people on one side remained seated and those on the opposite side “traveled” to the next seat when the time was up. Interviews at the beginning lasted three minutes, but increased to four and five minutes towards the end because of the strong connections that were being developed. In regular networking events, people usually have the chance to speak to a very limited number of professionals. However, with the speed networking format, everyone gets a chance to meet everyone else and because of the short duration of the meetings, professionals are able to tailor their presentations according to their partner’s interests and needs. From there, if a need for more information or follow up is identified, participants exchange contact information in order to schedule meetings in the future. Administration and the Sales & Marketing staff at Five Star were thanked profusely by all the attendees to the event. They were raving about how much fun the event was and how much they enjoyed getting to meet everyone. Do not miss Five Star’s upcoming networking events: Thursday, December 11, 2014 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm: CEU Training for Healthcare Professionals: “Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome”, sponsored in conjunction with Bayada Home Health Care Wednesday, January 7, 2015 from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm “Toast to the New Year’s” cocktail party For more information about these events please contact Lourdes Santacruz at (914) 709-1234 or email at lsantacruz@5sqc.com.

ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations

Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones? Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid. Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.

Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will? If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate. Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).

My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do? Your concerns are certainly daunting, and heart-rending. Our firm offers you a caring hand, an open ear, and uncompromising professional competence, and commitment. We will help find for you solutions that best suit your needs, using the latest tax, trust, and other asset protection strategies available under the law.

How seniors can manage holiday stress With travel, family and social engagements, house guests, shopping and a million other to-dos, the holidays can be overwhelming for anyone. However, for seniors the holidays can bring additional stress from multiple travel plans, an uprooted routine and even seasonal depression. Use these five tips to help keep holiday stress to a minimum for your senior loved one. 1. Set realistic goals: Visiting family and friends is always on the to-do list during the holiday season, but traveling and meeting with people all day can be physically and mentally exhausting. Make sure to schedule rest time throughout and allow for plenty of transportation time in between visits so that there's no rushing around to see last-minute guests.

2. Keep set schedules: If your senior parent or friend is used to waking up at a certain time, eating at a certain time and going to bed at a certain time, make sure to respect those schedules. Staying up later to accommodate family visits or having to eat later in the evening because of a difference in meal times can be difficult and stressful for a senior to acclimate to, so make sure you know beforehand what their schedule is like. 3. Keep expenses down: Many seniors are on fixed incomes, so keeping costs low can help ease any financial stress associated with the holidays. Travel, gifts and food can all start to take their toll on the checkbook, so make sure to create a realistic budget and stick to it. 4. Plan ahead: A marathon shopping trip may not be the best idea for a senior who has difficulty walking or standing for long periods of time. If these types of activities are unavoidable, make sure that a walker or wheelchair is available to make activities easier and more comfortable. 5. Keep friends and family around: Along with the fun and happy aspects of holidays comes sadness for many seniors - especially those who've lost loved ones. Be sure to not isolate yourself or your elderly companion. There are always churches and other civic organizations that offer holiday parties and gatherings, or volunteering at a local organization to stay social during the holidays.

Senior Law Day a great success The 15th annual Senior Law Day did take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the County Center in White Plains. The free event did feature 17 workshops on elder law topics, plus free 15-minute, one-on-one consultations with some of the county’s leading legal, financial and geriatric care experts. “Knowledge is power, and this program empowers seniors with practical information on topics that can help them know their rights, protect their finances and plan for the future,” Astorino said. “I applaud the professionals who volunteer their time and knowledge year after year to benefit our seniors.” Workshops did cover everything from financial planning and health care to affordable housing, taxes, wills, trusts, and much more. New this year was special help with long-term care insurance. Seniors were encouraged to bring a copy of their policy for a long-term care insurance professional to answer any questions. Workshops was also be presented in Spanish on Medicare and estate planning. Senior Law Day builds upon the county’s award-winning Livable Communities initiative, which aims to empower Westchester’s older adults to remain in their homes as they age with dignity, independence and civic involvement.

“An estimated 3,000 seniors, their families, and caregivers have benefitted from this program since Senior Law Day began in 1999,” said Mae Carpenter, commissioner, Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS). “Information seniors did receive at this event can make all the difference in the world as to whether they can continue to grow older in their homes and communities.” Senior Law Day is presented by DSPS, the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services, and the Ninth Judicial District of the New York State Office of Court Administration. Steven A. Schurkman, Esq., a partner with Keane & Beane in White Plains, is chair of the annual Senior Law Day program. His associate, Sarah A. Steckler, Esq., is program manager. Updated copies of the “Elder Law Q&A: An Introduction to Aging Issues and Planning for the Future,” which Schurkman wrote, was available on Senior Law Day in both English and Spanish. His publication is also posted in both languages on the DSPS website at www.westchestergov.com/seniors. Participants at Senior Law Day did also receive a free copy of “MAP: My Aging Plan,” a booklet that details what individuals and families can do from their 20’s through their 80’s and beyond to age successfully.

The Annual Drum Hill Senior Living Community’s Oktoberfest A great time was had by all at the annual Drum Hill Senior Living Community's Oktoberfest . The weather was beautiful and allowed for our residents and guests to enjoy strolling our grounds to see the foliage on the river and all of our festive decorations. While inside the building they were able to listen to authentic German music provided by the band, Alpine Squeeze. The food was delicious and included many of our chef' s ethnic treats like hot German potato salad, homemade red cabbage and sauerbraten to name a few. Of course the beer and wine flowed with the big finale consisting of apple strudel and red velvet cookies! Next onto the holiday season which is always a treat at Drum Hill Senior Living Community with our residents and staff starting to decorate our historic building while planning parties to help celebrate the season.

From our family to yours Happy Holidays.

Light the Night Walk The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)’s Connecticut Westchester Hudson Valley Chapter’s Westchester County Walk took place on Saturday, November 1st at Playland Amusement Park in Rye this past weekend. The Walk event brought together 3,000 participants to honor blood cancer survivors and commemorate those who have been lost to the diseases. The Westchester County Walk goal is $890,000 and the Walk event has brought the Chapter to almost 80% of their goal, with participants fundraising until January 31st.

provided

The Westchester County Walk was held in honor of Savanna DiFatta and Matthew McKay of New Rochelle and William Cervinka of Port Chester, and in memory of Isabel da Silva Homem of Harrison and Jeffrey Clark of Peekskill. “Light The Night has shown incredible momentum over the past five years here locally, doubling in size and revenue,” remarked Dennis Chillemi, Executive Director of LLS’s Connecticut Westchester Hudson Valley Chapter. “LLS’s mission of ensuring cures and access to care for all blood cancer patients is clearly resonating with a growing population in our area and Light The Night is allowing us to reach those patients in an impactful way.” The Light The Night Walk is a powerful and unique fundraising campaign of LLS, which brings together families and communities to honor blood cancer survivors, as well as those lost to the disease, and shines a light on the importance of finding cures and providing access to treatments for blood cancer patients. Through Light The Night, anyone big, small, young and old can have maximum impact on the LLS mission to find cures and improve the quality of life for blood cancer patients and their families. As there is no means of preventing or early screening for blood cancer, Light The Night is helping LLS bring light to the dark world of cancer. Since it began in 1999, this national program of nearly 200 walks across North America each fall has helped LLS invest more than $1 billion in research to advance breakthrough cancer treatments that are saving lives today.

Phelps Hospital fetes longtime volunteer with a birthday celebration 22 years as a volunteer, Edna Coggins turns 99 years young Edna Coggins, who has been volunteering at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center since 1993, was recently honored by the Volunteer Department on the occasion of her 99th birthday. Phelps President Keith Safian was among the guests who attended the celebration. Edna is Phelps’ oldest volunteer and considers every day she can help out at Phelps a day to celebrate. Edna comes in one day a week to fold letters for the mammography department, for distribution to patients. Her work for mammography is particularly poignant because she survived breast cancer twice – in 1997 and again in 2007. Not only is Edna the oldest volunteer at Phelps, she is perhaps the most stylish, forgoing the traditional pink smock for smart pantsuits and chic accessories.

Edna Coggins of Ossining was treated to a birthday party hosted by the Volunteer Department at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center. Mrs. Coggins, who has been a volunteer at Phelps for 22 years, turned 99 years young.

She regularly visits her hairdresser to have her pageboy haircut styled. Mary Sernatinger, Director of the Marketing Department, has worked with Edna for nearly 16 years. “I tell Edna that Tuesdays are the best day of the week in our office, because she is here, with her wonderful sense of humor and positive energy,” says Sernatinger, “Edna works hard at her tasks, and we are all grateful for everything she does. More than that, we love hearing her tell stories about her life and value the pearls of wisdom that she shares.” Edna says she feels at home at Phelps, “I’ve always appreciated coming to Phelps to volunteer, because it gives me my own space away from home, and I enjoy seeing all the people I’ve gotten to know over the years.”

Phelps is also close to home – she and William, her husband of 48 years, live in Ossining. For information about volunteer opportunities at Phelps, call the volunteer office at 914-366-3170. Great Holiday gift ideas for the caregiver in your life The holiday season is the perfect time to give a caregiver a touching gift that gives them an opportunity to do something good for themselves. For caregivers, the best gifts are often the simplest — love, encouragement, a helping hand. Here are five great Holiday gift ideas for the caregiver in your life. 1. Gift certificates: It’s a personalized gift that demonstrates you care and appreciate what they’re going through. How about a gift certificate for a one-on-one date to dinner and a movie? Combine it with pre-arranged respite care by arranging for another family member or friend to sit with the care recipient while you are out. 2. A good meal: Offer up a home-cooked meal or give a gift card to the recipient’s favorite restaurant. Another idea is to put together a gift basket filled with ingredients for easy-to-prepare meals. How about a cookbook with 10-minute crockpot meals or food you’ve prepared yourself that can be frozen and reheated for a full, nourishing meal when time is limited? 3. Home monitoring system: One of the biggest challenges of caring for an aging loved one is taking time away from your own family. So if the caregiver on your list is spending a lot of time with an aging parent and less time at home with her family, a home monitoring system can be a lifeline. 4. A tablet or smartphone: More caregivers are relying on technology to research their loved one’s medical needs, communicate with long-distance family members to keep them in the loop, and to coordinate caregiving duties between multiple family members. A mobile device like a tablet or smartphone is a welcome gift that can make a caregiver’s life much more organized and less stressful.

5. Personalized mixed CDs or playlists. Music is an excellent stress-reliever and it’s also been shown to be highly beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, making it a perfect gift for a caregiver caring for someone with cognitive impairment.

Travel tips for seniors during the holiday season It’s that time of year again, and if you’re planning to travel for the holidays, there are some important things that you should remember. Whether you’re flying out to visit with the family or driving to see family, the following tips will help make sure that you stay safe, save money and enjoy your holiday travel to the fullest

Plan ahead when flying to save money: Purchase your tickets ahead of time for lower prices and travel on lighter traveling days. You can sign up for many online services that will let you know ahead of time about travel deals during the holidays. The day before Thanksgiving and the following Sunday are the busiest travel days, so avoid traveling by air on those days. Flying on Black Friday will almost guarantee that you will avoid the crowds because most people will be shopping. • Take advantage of mobile apps: iPhone users can take advantage of useful applications on their phones. Smart phones can track airport information while traveling. Keep track of gate changes, flight delays, take-off times, and eating and bathroom locations (for those “gotta go now!” times). Some airlines have apps for check-in, tracking flight status, and even seat confirmation. Whether driving or flying, smart phones have great GPS applications that will get you where you’re going without having to look at a map. • Be sure to fill up: Driving in bad weather is taxing enough without worrying about running out of gas. Be sure to fill your tank when it hits the halfway point so that you don’t risk running out.

Caregivers are licensed & bonded • Home Health Aides • Personal Care Aides • 24 hour Live-In Aides • RNs & LPNs • Plan ahead: If you are driving, it makes sense to plan your route and the times you will be traveling ahead of time. Pick the most efficient route for you. This does not mean the quickest route. You want to pick the route that will get you to your destination quickly, but safely. Sometimes that means taking the long way around. For instance, when traveling near large cities, you will often have the choice of a route around the city or through it. Unless your destination is inside the city, you may want to go around. Taking the long way around will allow you to avoid unnecessary traffic jams and accidents. Plan your route so that you are traveling through the highest traffic areas in the late morning, afternoon, or late evening to avoid the morning and evening rushes. • Always have a backup: If you don’t have a smart phone or prefer not to use one, take your map and use highlighters. Highlighting your route will make it easy to see where you are going. Add and highlight exit numbers and rest stops as well. The easier it is to see, the less stressful your trip will be.

Phelps Memorial Hospital Center approves agreement to join North Shore-LIJ Health System An agreement has been finalized for Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow, NY to join the North Shore-LIJ Health System. The agreement, signed by North Shore-LIJ President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Dowling and Phelps Chair Richard Sinni, was previously approved by the Phelps Board of Directors and the North Shore-LIJ Board of Trustees. Phelps becomes North Shore-LIJ’s 18th hospital and expands the health system’s presence beyond New York City and Long Island into Westchester County. Phelps is a 58-year-old hospital with a rich legacy of exceptional care. Annually, the 238-bed hospital and its nearly 1,700 employees care for more than 8,000 inpatients and about 325,000 outpatients, including more than 26,000 emergency visits. The addition of Phelps’ 1,700 employees increases North Shore-LIJ’s workforce to about 50,000 – the largest private employer in New York State.

“As exciting as it is for North ShoreLIJ to move beyond its traditional service area of Long Island and the City of New York, the true beneficiaries of this new relationship will be the thousands of individuals and families in Westchester County who entrust their care to Phelps Memorial Hospital,” said Mr. Dowling. “We are committed to strengthening and expanding the clinical services that Phelps provides, ensuring that the hospital will continue to fulfill its mission as a full-service community hospital.” As part of the agreement, North ShoreLIJ will invest in infrastructure improvements and clinical program expansion at Phelps. “We are excited to be joining an organization that shares our vision for care in the future and has the resources to help us achieve our goals,” said Mr. Sinni. “The partnership will ensure that Phelps will be able to continue to provide quality care to our community, now and in the future.”

6 tips to maintain your diet during the holiday season (you can do it!)

Who qualifies for a Life Insurance Settlements or an Advanced Benefit Loan? At B & M Capital Inc., we advise on the various financial benefits of selling or taking a loan against your life insurance policy either through a life settlement or an advanced benefit loan. When we speak to individuals or professionals at seminars and conferences, they are amazed to learn how old the life settlement industry, about 100 years, and how many financial institution own or invest in this type of business. Yet, the greatest misconception in educating potential clients and professionals is, who are the people that qualify for a life settlement or advanced benefit loan? The answer to all of them is anyone who has obtained the age of 65 or older. They must be of retirement age, not necessary retired. They can still be actively working; actually, some of these people are still active members in the work force.

Stay slim with these six tips healthy eating for seniors! With these tricks, you can avoid picking up those extra pounds over the holidays. 1. Do not skip meals It may well be that you would like to skip lunch to have room for more food at a Christmas party in the evening. However, this not particularly good for your weight. If you skip a meal, there is a high probability that you will overeat later 2. Choose your favorite foods Eat only the foods that you really like at parties. Think about what you would like to taste before the noshing begins. This can make it easier when you stand in front of the spread. 3. Ask for the menu For private holiday parties you could ask your host about what kind of food that will be served, so that you can prepare. Most people will be very understanding of this, especially when it comes to a guest on a senior diet. This allows you to have planned very precisely, what dishes you want to sink your teeth in. 4. Find a senior home care agency Many of these specialize in healthy eating for seniors and can prepare you varied, nutritious meal, with no effort on your behalf. Over the holidays you can ask you senior home care provider to make the meals extra low fat, high in fiber etc., to make up for the rich holidays foods you will be served. Meal preparation is the ultimate calorie controller for people on senior diets. 5. Limit your fat intake Cut visible fat from roasts etc. Limit the amount of roasted potatoes you eat, and eat plenty of greens. If you cannot do without gravy, try to eat as little as possible.

The point that I am trying to get across is, today’s seniors are very different than what society shows us or what we perceive in our minds. Seniors, who are looking for other financial sources to find income or raise fund do not have to be hospitalized, terminally ill or destitute. There are many seniors who take advantage of our services that are in generally good health and financially sound. Here are some reasons why seniors take advantage of our services:

1. They are outliving their retirement funds due to the advancement in medicine, change in life style,

and the cost of living in the Northeast. Most seniors that live in the tri state area, enjoy being close to the greatest City in the world and do not want to leave. They have made friends, families, memories, and built a life that is unique to the Northeast. I know this to be true because; this is what I was told by my own parents, who were not born in this region.

2. Seniors are still very shrewd investors. Once I explain to seniors

how much value their life insurance contract could be possibly worth. They are quick to act. First we start with basic underwriting requirements and we submit the necessary paperwork. No cost to my client, a potential offer is then offered by a top-tier financial company. In a three to four week span, my clients are amazed on how easy and financially rewarding this type of transaction can be.

B & M Capital is a structured settlement company specializing in the purchasing of life insurance, annuities, structured settlements and offering Advanced Benefit Loans.

Seniors save money and find company by finding a roommate They aren’t exactly sharing history notes and planning weekend parties, but seniors are participating in home sharing programs to be able stay in their homes and save money. The companionship they find is an added bonus. Agencies that put such seniors together say the need appears to be growing as baby boomers age and struggle to deal with foreclosures, property taxes and rising rents. In most cases, elderly women who have been divorced or widowed need help with the upkeep of their house or apartment and have an extra room. So, they reach out to agencies specializing in homesharing to find somebody to live with who will pay rent. And, the companionship home sharers gain in the process is a definite plus. Various agencies across the country are helping people find housemates, whether they live in apartments or houses. Most offer services that include matching people to ideal candidates through screening processes to determine compatibility, much like those of online dating sites. One local agency is the New York Foundation for Senior Citizens. To contact the New York Foundation for Senior Citizens, call 1-212-962-7559 or email nyfsinc@aol.com.
