Picture Book Beltz & Gelberg 1
In the year 2000, Philip Waechter, artist from Frankfurt, decided to draw a card a day. There are now almost 5,000 cards. In What A Day! 69 days of snapshots of an everyday family with children are presented – often enough illogical from a child’s point of view, and simply hilarious. Like his role model Sempé, Philip Waechter again proves himself a subtle observer of everyday situations. And he expresses how lucky we are that life is how it is.
»What would we be without the daily illustrations by illustrator Philip Waechter? Our lives would be duller. Year for year at the Frankfurt Book Fair he shares the past 12 months with us – by presenting a selection of his illustrated daily chronicles in the form of a postcard-sized illustration. « FAZ zur Buchmesse

A true book of nature – inside and out!
© Frank Wiehle
What goes on in the forest and in the garden? Katrin Wiehle lets the animals speak for themselves in her new books on nature – endearingly designed in contemporary awareness of environmental protection and sustainability.
Katrin Wiehle likes tea, pencils and foxes. Together with her boyfriend, she commutes between Germany and the United States and has been working as a freelance illustrator since 2009. She received the Talented Young Artist’s Prize from the German Academy for Children’s and Youth Literature in 2011 for her picture book debut, Professor Pfeffers tierisches Abendteuer. It also received an award from the Book Art Foundation. This made her very happy. www.katrinwiehle.de
What could be more wonderful for an inquisitive child than to take a walk through the garden or the forest? Katrin Wiehle invites young readers to join her on a nature field trip to both near and far destinations, taking a closer look at things and describing them with short texts. She bases her observations on important criteria such as contrasts, comparisons and shapes in a child-friendly style. The new nature books are designed in earthy tones typical of the talented young artist and are produced in an environmentally sustainable edition, offering an all-around eco-friendly concept that appropriately meets todays needs – inside and out!

The magician performs his tricks, »Here you see the magic ball, let this head be cute and small!« In the wink of an eye, he turns an egg into a bird, a bird into a horse, a horse into a dragon, which in turn changes into a firefighter and much more. Kids will be enchanted page for page when flipping over the different parts and changing head, tummies and legs into new combinations. They can conjure up a robot-dragon-monster or an alien-finned-horse … The special thing about this book is that the magician is also tranformed as each new creature appears. Antje von Stemm’s onomatopoeia nonsense rhymes can also be mixed and match to make reading this book a fun occasion for young and old.

A new children’s picture book by Rafik Schami published by Beltz & Gelberg
© Root Leeb
Mina is an innocent little mouse who is not afraid of anyone or anything, because she has no idea what fear is – until she meets the snake! A very wise and amusing picture book on one of the most important feelings, told by two successful authors: Rafik Schami and Kathrin Schärer, a great cast for a small performance.
Rafik Schami, born in 1946 in Damascus, has lived in Germany since 1971. He is one of the most significant authors of German books, his books having won numerous awards. Schami received recognition for his life’s work. Beltz & Gelberg has published his novels Eine Hand voller Sterne (A Handful of Stars), Erzähler der Nacht (Storytellers of the Night), Der ehrliche Lügner (The Honest Liar) and the picture book Der Wunderkasten (The Magic Box) (Illustrations by Peter Knorr).
© H.P.Schori
Kathrin Schärer, born in 1969, studied in Basel. She is one of the most renowned illustrators and has published many picture books such as Mutig, mutig (Courageous, Courageous) with Lorenz Pauli, and Johanna im Zug (Johanna in the Train), which was nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize. In addition, she illustrated the story Das Herz der Puppe (The Doll’s Heart) by Rafik Schami.
Mina, the little mouse, doesn’t know what fear is. So she goes out to discover it. »Are you scared?« she asks the lion. But the lion only causes fear, raging and roaring and making a scene – without success. »You must be crazy not to be afraid of me,« it says. The hippo is only hungry, the elephant also regrets not being able to be scared (but it wishes it could have some goose pimples), the dog is able to smell fear, the cricket thinks fear is funny and the turtle knows so many different types of fear and phobia that the little mouse falls asleep just listening to them. Suddenly she is wide awake when she faces the snake – and from this moment on, she knows what it means to be afraid … »When I stand on stage, I am able to transform 700 sceptical people into children. All it takes is the beauty of words.«Rafik Schami »Kathrin Schärer is much more than an illustrator of children’s books. Her figures show character, personality, emotions and affection so that even as pictures they convey vivid experience and invite readers to communicate and start conversations. This is precious encouragement to read, educating even the youngest to experience the world in a loving way.« Laudatio at the award ceremony of the Heidelberg Leander.

Can this piece of paper on the table be thrown away? No, look at it more closely – it’s an icy landscape with penguins! When arts and crafts are done, there are often scraps of paper, spots of paint and glue and a mess is left behind. Toss everything in the waste basket? No! Paper artist Eva König shows how little stories can be told with the scraps, easily created with a few brush strokes, cuts or collages. And she motivates small and large readers to see their workspace with other eyes – until faces, figures and landscapes are visible …

Everything has its proper place – but how fast can things get mixed up? The minute you leave your home country, things like cars driving on the wrong side of the road, reading a book from the back to the front or even writing turns from right to left instead of vice versa start to happen … Nature also likes to do things differently, like letting the male seahorses be the ones to have the children, or making fish able to fly. And sometimes even people act totally different than we expect them to. You can turn the world upside down in the wink of an eye. How about putting wool socks on your ears to keep them warm, and putting a thimble on your big toe? This refreshingly different picture book provides inspiration to both children and adults on how to playfully and philosophically look at things from a different perspective.

e b o t – s ie r o t s e im t Bed in a g a d n a in a g a d rea Mirle’s father tells the best and craziest bedtime stories in the world! Amusing and absurd stories that will grandly amuse children, lovingly told by a new author. And even more thrilling because Axel Scheffler created enchanting illustrations to go with them. Going to bed has never been more fun! Ever since Mama went away for a while, Mirle and her father have a good talk every evening. »How was it at school today?« her father asks. »Our teacher said that there are people with lots of different skin colors,« says Mirle. »It hasn’t always been that way,« Papa replies. »All people used to have green skin.« »What?!« screeches Mirle, »Green??« Sometimes she is sure her father is crazy. And Mira lies on the sofa while Papa tells her how it was when everyone was green. Or why Aunt Elsie lost her patience when the tiny people were always sitting in her flowerpots. Or when the animals were able to talk and there was even a squirrel chorus – until the animals had enough and turned to the ones who make the decisions in the world, who finally put an end to all the chaos. And then Mirle goes to bed satisfied. That’s how every story, every day and this book all end. »Axel Scheffler is the most successful German illustrator.« Tilmann Spreckelsen, FAZ

Or even aliens? If the doorbell rings in the middle of the night, Emily immediately knows what to do. The girls’ friendship, which strives to break out of the throes of loneliness and yearns for attention and affinity, is vividly described as intense and exhilarating. The jury was deeply impressed at how the author was able to make the protagonists with their yearnings and entanglements come alive, despite all their anxieties.« The explanation of the jury of the Peter Härtling Prize 2013

»Emotions are crucial to survival,« her mother says, »but they make you weak in everyday life.« Yet Alice, a girl without a real home, no father and no friends, who would rather have a teddy bear than a golden heart necklace, is longing for emotions. Everything is different with Cherry, whose red toenails look like shiny pieces of candy. For hours they walk together through snowy forests that could be straight out of a fairy tale after school. When the snowflakes fall, they dance minuet. They also build a house out of fir branches, lay down on the train tracks and stroll through town. The main thing is to be in each other’s company. Then the unbearable happens, when Cherry goes home alone after her karate exam. As Alice’s mother is on stage singing »Oh, I am dying, my life is over …« in the opera »La Traviata« as Violetta, Cherry is murdered …

Jim the giant robot, Sam the centipede and many other amazing, amusing and easy-to-make creative ideas that will ban boredom in any household. The Danish artist, Annika Øyrabø shows what wonderful creations can be made of waste.
Annika Øyrabø, born in 1977, studied illustration in Copenhagen and Hamburg. She has been working as a freelance illustrator since 2007 and offers craft workshops for children, where she uses recycling materials to make things like huge scrap robots. She has worked on several book projects in Denmark so far.
What can you do with a plastic bottle, some cardboard and a piece of bubble wrap? Throw them away?!? That would be such a shame, when you could make Paula Penguin from them! This activity book provides numerous unusual ideas on how to make amazing creations out of things that would normally go into the waste bin. You will find robots made of scraps, animals, costumes, houses, vehicles, presents, games, and much, much more. The directions are easy to follow and the materials can be found in any household. And sometimes even stories come to life in the process. Above all, children will be encouraged to develop their own ideas of what they could possibly make with the leftovers. A colourful activity and discovery book for wrapping artists, paper acrobats and recycling heroes.

Get involved! What causes do youths and adults support? What things are important to them? Why do some people fight for human rights in developing countries or decide to do a voluntary social service? Lynn, Carina, Mayleen and Lilly are 14 years old when they hear that many rabbits are not treated properly by their breeders. They found their own society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. When doing research for a school report, Felix becomes aware how threatening climate change is for our planet. Together with other youths, he founded the initiative Plant for the Planet – and today over 12 billion trees have been planted worldwide! There are numerous possibilities for supporting a cause and changing the world. Usually it takes some occasion that touches one personally to motivate people to become active. No matter if you decide to join an already existing organization or found one of your own – the important thing is the will to do something, take on responsibility and get involved with others in society.

Richard Wagner’s
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) is still one of the most controversial Germans, even today, almost 200 years after his birth. The publisher and Wagner-expert, Axel Brüggemann, creates a furious and very contemporary picture of a megalomaniac and brilliant composer who wanted to change the world – and above all, music.
Cover: Rothfos & Gabler
»Those who listen to music find themselves transported to a universe of art. They need to let it encompass them, putting their prejudices and view of the world aside.« Axel Brüggemann
His works are so huge and contradictory, that many wanted to call him their own – democrats, communists, fascists. There has rarely been anyone that better embodies German history in one person. He joined the protests in 1848, fled into exile and finally served the fairy tale king, Ludwig II. He was a humanist and ego-maniac, anti-Semite and friend of Jews, chauvanist and lover of women, a philosopher and a private dictator. He unconditionally followed this idea of making music for a new era – a complete work of art consisting of music, lyrics and images – revolutionized music history. His works are still so modern that they were chosen for soundtracks to movies such as »Apocalypse Now«, »Matrix« and »Melancholia«. This biography provides readers with an encompassing overview of his eccentric life and his work, which are inseparably interwoven.
