There are so many things to see at the FARM – plants, animals and vehicles!

© Frank Wiehle

There is so much to experience at a farm! Katrin Wiehle uses warm colours, likeable characters and clear shapes to produce a unique version of the popular topic farm – 100% natural both inside and out!

Katrin Wiehle likes tea, pencils and foxes. She lives in the USA with her husband and cat, and has been working as a freelance illustrator since 2009. In 2011 she was awarded the prize for up-and-coming talents by the German Academy for Children’s and Youth Literature. In addition, her picture book debut Professor Pfeffers tierisches Abenteuer (Professor Pepper’s Animal Adventure) and her nature book Mein kleiner Wald (My Little Forest) were given awards by the Stiftung Buchkunst (Society for Book Art). www.katrinwiehle.de

Many different animals live inside the barn and on the pasture, with baby animals running all around getting into mischief. The tractor rides over the fields, where crops and vegetables grow and the pig secretly chews on a beet. The farmer takes a nap after lunch in the garden, between the humming bees and fragrant flowers, while his wife sells fresh fruit and vegetables in the farm shop.

About tree houses, water huts and sleeping dens

LABOR is a studio cooperation in Frankfurt/ Main (www.laborproben.de). The following artists participated in this children’s artists’ book: Kirsten Fabinski, Christopher Fellehner, Zuni Fellehner, Anke Kuhl, Alexandra Maxeiner, Jörg Mühle, Moni Port, Natascha Vlahović, Philip Waechter. In the meantime, 150,000 copies of their first Children’s Artists’ Doodle Book have been sold – wow!

In the 6th CHILDREN’S ARTIST’S BOOK there are more than 250 activity pages for doodling and creating crafts. It also includes lots of questions and answers on the topic of living and building – but always very funny, courageous, inspiring and totally comfortable! Everything looks different from a child’s perspective: from treehouses to dream houses, inhabitable caves to door knobs, window shutters and water faucets, from inhabited houses, homeless people and furniture to sit on, from spider webs and lice caves, from moving in to moving out, from loud neighbours and quiet neighbours, from (wild) music an (slanted) house blessings, from kitchens to bathrooms. An activity book with lists, search pictures, mazes, photos, comics, illustrations, stories and a city to make out of paper! With an extra envelope to cut out and build a house!

This tale is told in juicy language and with endearing details. Together they get to the roots of the secret of Mrs. Owl‘s turban, from which her yellow eyes flash, survive a storm and get drunk on woodruff. An exceptional story about life in a city. A life that, in ideal cases, can be so wonderfully shared with others, when there are people like Elke. Full of humour, the joy of writing and sentences that you want to read over and over again.

Christian Duda’s real name is Christian Achmed Gad Elkarim. He was Austrian, Egyptian and is now German. He was a Catholic, Mohammedan and has now long been a happy atheist. He is a writer, producer, father and lives with his family near Berlin.

“Hey, watch out!” Kasimir yells. “Oh, I‘m sorry,” Elke replies in a fright. A cake that almost runs one over has to be tested, so in a wink, the two find themselves in Uwe‘s cafe. The cafe is soon filled with guests, because thanks to Elke and Kasimir, there is not only cake and coffee, but also great company. Elke takes care of everyone, just not herself. It is only when her heart misses a beat and starts to act up and she is no longer there, everyone realizes how little they know about her. A story that seems simple, yet has so many complex facets.

© Gudula Friese

Julia Friese, born in 1979 in Leipzig, studied graphic design and fine arts in Leipzig, Bilbao and Dublin. She loves to illustrate books by Christian Duda. Both were nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize in 2008. She lives and works as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator in Berlin.

There is not much to say about Elke. She was good at hiding herself. How? all those who knew Elke start to ask, A woman like Elke can‘t just be overlooked!. That‘s right, yet she managed not to stand out, although she stood out.

Chris rescues everything and everyone – he is a super saviour. Only in the case of Titus, who sends out clear signals of being totally overwhelmed, he somewhat fails – luckily! Chris is an unusual boy. His reputation as a life saver precedes him. Yet everything changes when he discovers the true reason for Titus‘ mysterious behavior (because his mother is in the hospital, Titus is solely responsible for his baby sister!) and the truth about why his grandmother is mainly responsible for him, why his mother is so sad and how the rose pond turned into a rose bed in their garden. Salah Naoura, a magnificent storyteller, understands how to masterfully tell a laconic and humorous tale of how close good and back luck can sometime be.

The new one stared at him for quite a while. »Why are you doing this?« he finally asked. »What?« – »Helping me.« Chris shrugged his shoulders and stared back. In the bright sunlight the skin of the vampire not only looked pale, but almost already gray. His eyes were as red as if he had spent the whole night at the computer. And he looked really hungry. »I have a cheese sandwich with me,« said Chris. »And I hate cheese,« he lied. »Do you want it?« The new guy pounced on the cheese sandwich and gobbled it down as greedily as Grandma‘s fox terrier, Rocco, always wolfed down his sausage at the butcher shop – almost without stopping to chew. »Thanks. You‘re really funny.«

Y  H ighly explosive topic for parents: Protecting privacy on the web Y  Motives to get active Y  By the authors of Do It Yourself for Girls

Sonja Eismann (right), born in 1973, wanted to be dressed smartly as little girl. It was crystal-clear for her that boys and girls should be treated alike. Today she is interested in pop culture, feminism and fashion theory. Chris Koever, born in 1979, thought that it was complicated to be a girl. Meanwhile she knows it is complicated, if you do not want to be forced into a role model. Together with Sonja (and Stefanie Lohaus) she published the Missy Magazine and she works as freelance author. Daniela Burger, born in 1969, always has had reservations about skirs and bras, but some time or other she learned that they are okay. She is the art director of Missy and works as freelance graphic designer.

Good BusinesS is the Best art Andy Warhol Andy Warhol is a pop art icon and a key figure for understanding contemporary art. His ideas and experiments made him one of the pioneers of star cult and self-marketing. Maren Gottschalk takes an inquisitive and open approach in her new biography of the complex artist. Three yearnings drove Andy Warhol (1928-1987) since his childhood, who went from being the son of poor immigrants to a talented illustrator and eccentric millionaire. He wanted to be handsome, rich and famous. The separation of art and commerce was not controversial to Warhol, who was first a commercial graphic designer. He knew what moved and provoked people. With his world-famous Campbell soup cans, 1962, he created a new definition of art – seemingly mundane was henceforth produced in series. His silkscreen prints of Marilyn Monroe are forever etched into our collective memory. His factory stood for New Yorkers’ never-ending parties, for sex and drugs, and he himself was a master of shrill self-stylization and self-production, who made himself into a brand.

»Some rifts that Warhol tore open with his art have long been refilled today. No one gets upset about his pictures today. Instead, they are regarded as classics of pop art and bring in top prices at auctions. There are apps on the Internet that can transform pictures into Warhol style today, so that everyone can produce their own »Warhol«. The chasm between the cheap Warhol copies on smartphones, mugs or posters and in the million-dollar original show that we are far from being over with Warhol.« Maren Gottschalk
