Animals and human throughout the year

© Frank Wiehle

With fabulous illustrations and endearing characters, this book tells about what animals and people do in the various seasons. With the first spring green, the birds begin to build their nests and rubber boots are great for stomping in the mud. It finally starts to get really warm and everyone meets at the lake to go swimming or eat ice cream – summer has arrived! In the fall, the birds start to migrate, the hedgehog looks for a place to hibernate and the squirrel hides its nuts. And when winter comes, we dress warmly and then go out to build a snowman or go ice-skating!

Katrin Wiehle likes tea, pencils and foxes. She lives with her husband and cat in the U.S.A. and has worked as a freelance illustrator since 2009. In 2011 she received the newcomer prize from the German Academy for Children’s and Youth Literature for her picture book debut, Professor Pepper’s Animal Adventures and the nature book My Small Forest was awarded a prize from the Stiftung Buchkunst.

are loose!

© Sebastian Hoppe

A whole flock of green parrots is flying around and build their nests in bare city trees. They escaped from an airplane which they had been loaded into in a far away country… Even the pigeons are amazed at the colourful birds in the gray city and people ask themselves: How would the city look if it had been monkeys that had gotten loose? Or even snakes? And how would it feel if we had been the ones that were loaded up and sent off? The answers can be found in these spectacularly colourful illustrations that invite one to sympathize with the characters and celebrate diversity.

Martin Baltscheit, born in 1965 in Düsseldorf, studied communication design in Essen. Afterwards he worked as a cartoonist, illustrator, actor and author of children’s books, prose, audio books and script writer. He received numerous awards. Martin Baltscheit lives in Düsseldorf together with his family.

Hand on your heart, paw in the air, spit three times and make a holy oath … The 4th volume of the two rat kids, Eliot and Isabella, has finally appeared. This time they save Grandpa Pucky from the evil Bocky Bockwurst. Entertaining to read aloud and fall in love with! Oh boy! Eliot and his friend, Isabella, want to pick Grandpa Pucky up from the forest festival, but his cabin is empty. Since it suspiciously smells like Bockwurst, the case is pretty clear – Grandpa has been kidnapped by Bocky and his gang of bullies. They are after the treasure of the Dark Forest, which Grandpa surely knows more about! They follow the tracks through the deep, dark forest, where many dangers await young rats. Fox and snake are easy to deal with, but the owl and the nasty wolf are harder to trick, but when the going gets rough, Eliot comes up with some very good ideas. Luckily they not only rescue Grandpa Pucky, but are even able to find out more about the treasure.

Mucker and Rosine are sitting in their comfortable hut when they hear thunder getting closer. »Do you think that is spring coming?« asks Mucker, when suddenly a small dragon crashes through the door carried by an avalanche. What no one knows at this point – the snow has also transported a small, checkered figure along with it that suspiciously looks like a fox … It secretly creeps into Mrs. Owl’s pantry. Using a magically poisoned cupcake, it takes control of the foresters in the woods. High time for everyone to join forces with Mucker and Rosine to try and outsmart this villian.

»Feelings …«, mumbled the lion. »That’s a hobby for softies.«

© Stefanie Weiler

The lion sits on the banks of the river, waiting for some emotions to stir within him, for the beautiful lioness wants a lion with a heart, one who is also able to cry. But that is not as easy as it sounds.

Martin Baltscheit is the lion’s father and also an extremely talented creature of tale-telling. He works with stories in books, plays, films and audio books and has received many prizes for his work.

Luckily the green crocodile surfaces and offers the lion its help – after all, crocodiles are professionals when it comes to tears. Yet no matter how hard the crocodile tries, the lion is a hopeless case. No matter what kind of hints, tricks and therapies the crocodile tries, the lion is still not able to cry even one teardrop. Whether it be the sad tale of the big, bad girl and her fat, old grandmother, the tickle attack or even the crocodile bite on the lion’s bottom (with 74 teeth!!!), the lion remains tearless. Even when the crocodile swallows his friend in one big gulp, the lion just won’t cry. Then the crocodile tries one special, final idea …

Arno’s 7th birthday is a blast – a day full of surprises, dangers and adventure! The way Nikolaus Heidelbach ironically and mischievously plays with illusion, dreams and reality is fantastic. Nothing is impossible.

Nikolaus Heidelbach, born in 1955, lives in Cologne. His books have been awarded numerous prizes, and he received the special award from the German Youth Literature Prize for his complete work. The last picture books published by Beltz & Gelberg were What are the Girls Up to Today? and What are the Boys Up To Today?.

Arno’s parents go all out to make their son’s birthday unforgettable and hire the Birthday Party Inc. Arno excitedly inspects the truck with 12 trailers together with his friend, Betty Bellbuckle, and they discover one spectacular surprise after the next – dancers who play blind man’s bluff with him, the picture show called »That was My Life«, a greedy wallet that jumps through burning hoops, sea cows playing basketball, a two-headed woman that tells them their fortunes and a monsterous bubble-gum monster. Can it be real? Hard to tell, but the boy with the promising name Arno really likes it – even if he thinks everyone who participated is completely insane.

»An enchanting story about a 7-year-old birthday boy, who is the spitting image of ARNO SCHMIDT (German author)« Andreas Platthaus, FAZ

»She is a living inferno, one like I have never experienced before ...« Franz Kafka

© Volker Derlath/Beltz & Gelberg

Her short love affair with the poet Franz Kafka made her famous throughout the world. Yet there was much more to Milena Jesenská than that. Early on she stood in the limelight of the Prague intellectual society, later becoming a dedicated political journalist and finally a member of the resistance in the Third Reich. Alois Prinz, one of the most well-known biographers, tells the tale of a colourful and moving life.

Alois Prinz, born in 1958, studied literature and philosophy and lives near Munich. Today he is one of the leading biographers and has published numerous biographies with Beltz & Gelberg, for example about Hannah Arendt (which won the Evangelischer Buchpreis), Ulrike Meinhof (awarded the German Youth Literature Prize), Franz Kafka, The Apostle Paul and, most recently, about Joseph Goebbels.

Daughter of a professor in Prague, Milena Jesenská (1896–1944), spent her life striving for independence and battling against being put into one category. She broke off her studies of medicine, married against her father’s will, who, in turn, disinherited her. She made the transition from being a fashion journalist into a journalist who fought against social poverty and against the Nazi regime, ending up in Ravensbrück, the concentration camp where she lost her life. Powerfully and with great respect, Alois Prinz tells Milena’s story in which she meets Kafka as a 24-year-old, who calls her a »living inferno« when their lives crossed. He refers to the recently found letters that Milena wrote to her father and her daughter, Honza, from concentration camp. The image of a young woman emerges who was extraordinarily passionate in love, friendship and caring for others.

What holds our world together at its core Zero waste activism, nutrition, Fair Trade – sustainable thinking and trade are on our minds at various levels. Together with journalists and activists, Sonja Eismann highlights global interrelations. How do our preference for organic products, our solidarity with others and growth as a basic principle of capitalist economic systems all fit together? When talking about sustainability, the focus is increasingly being placed on how we deal with resources. In addition to ecological and economical implications, there are also social factors that determine our today and future. In order to take a closer look at the global interaction of the topic, experts from politics and industry have a chance to voice their opinions, but also bloggers, journalists and activists.
