2 Story Book
HEIDELBACH‘S LATEST MASTERPIECE: 165 ILLUSTRATIONS, 61 FAIRY TALES, 1 ARTWORK And if one – either you or me – dares to take off to search for a dream, that person will find them, those faithful companions »Incredibly tall«, »Miles wide« and »Fiery eye«. This opulent book contains 61 of the most wonderful fairy tales from all over the world. What really makes it even more spectacular are the 165 incredible illustrations by Nikolaus Heidelbach. A unique creation, with gold foil, ribbon bookmark and linen that cannot be found elsewhere – a joy for everyone in the household and particularly for book-lovers.
Nikolaus Heidelbach, born in 1955, lives in Cologne. His picture books and illustrations have won numerous prizes, and for his work as a whole he received the German Youth Literature Prize. His books for children have all appeared on the Beltz & Gelberg list. Most recently the picture book Queen Gisela (winner of the German Youth Literature Prize).
Hans-Joachim Gelberg, born in 1930, has published numerous anthologies which were awarded various prizes. He is also the editor of books containing Grimm’s and Andersen fairy tales with illustrations by Nikolaus Heidelbach, which have become real classics.

The one thing all these fairy tales have in common – each one carefully selected by Hans-Joachim Gelberg – is the magic of transformation and the search for happiness. They are tales of sorcerers, giants, witches and dragons. They may be sad or cheerful, short or long. Heidelbach sees them as a challenge – never before have common fairy tales been so cryptically illustrated. After his successful works with the Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales and the Andersen Fairy Tales, Heidelbach again proves to be one of the greatest masters at telling tales and illustrating them.
Beltz & Gelberg 3 Comments on the fairy tales books by Heidelbach: »When today’s children still need fairy tales, then they now have the illustrations for them.« Der Spiegel »Artist Nikolaus Heidelbach from Cologne bestows this fairy tale collection with eternal merit.« »A miracle that makes this book into a very special gift.« Brigitte

A truly majestic colouring book!
The Queen of Colours is one of the most enchanting and successful picture books by Jutta Bauer. Now there is finally a colouring book to go with it that will provide royal amusement to young artists. Jutta Bauer explains the wonderful interplay of colours in poetic words in her book The Queen of Colours, now available for children to experiment with themselves. The trick is not to colour the figures, but to creatively continue the art work – giving the pictures a new sense, encouraging fantasy and promoting creativity while having fun at the same time! »The Queen of Colours is one of the most outstanding works among picture books of the past years.« Bulletin Jugend & Literatur »The fairy tale of a colourless queen who first has to discover herself in the colours in order to be happy. Paul would have been all alone, if the whole apartment building hadn’t turned into his family. Härtling proceeds to tell this tale cautiously, yet provokingly – from the perspective of the child – of parents, too, who do not know they need to be there.
Peter Härtling, born in 1933, lives in Mörfelden-Walldorf/Hesse and is one of the most significant authors of German children’s literature. His work has been awarded numerous literature prizes. His most recent book to appear with Beltz & Gelberg was Reise gegen den Wind (Trip Against the Wind) (2000).
A city, an apartment building and a child – a child whose world goes topsy turvy this summer. Paul’s mother is in New York, his father is always away. Paul is alone and yet he isn’t. For since his parents have abandoned him, the whole house has started to take care of him. Grandma Kate, Helena and her parents, Erin Üdal and Bibi and all the others. Paul can always count on old Schwarzhaupt – for things concerning school and when they chase those bike thieves. But sometimes Paul feels real anger rise up inside.
»Härtling cannot stop attempting to counter the lack of emotion with depth.« FAS »Peter Härtling writes his children’s books out of anger at adults’ lies – and for his love of children … His books depict reality in today’s society. It is possible that books like Ben Loves Anna, That was Hirbel or Oma are more current today than ever before, because their author was ahead of his time regarding anger and critique.« Bücher

THE GRAND FINALE OF A MASTERFUL FAMILY EPIC A magnificent, moving family novel about people who dream of living in a fairer society. After 1848 and Fünf Finger hat die Hand (The Hand has Five Fingers), the third and last part of the Jacobi saga – a unique trilogy. Berlin in 1890: 17-year-old David falls in love with Anna this summer, a sassy young girl who has her heart in the right place. She wants to wait for him in case he ends up in jail like his grandfather. He hangs up posters that were against the government, gets expelled from school and now they are threatening to charge him for violating the »socialist law«. Kordon’s new historic novel – perhaps his most warmhearted and most charming – plays in a time when the German Kaiserreich flaunted its wealth on one hand and political randomness led to unbelievable poverty on the other. The Jacobis try to do something about it. »Fünf Finger hat die Hand (The Hand has Five Fingers) is exciting and clear, colourful and unadorned. A moving document that will keep its readers breathless.« Dachauer Nachrichten

A DIFFERENT KIND OF MUSIC HISTORY
M
This music book for children and youths presents music as a part of everyday culture and the history of clang – not as a subject at school. Music plays a huge role in the lives of children and youths. But how did hip hop, rock or jazz – that is, the music we listen to today – evolve? How did the tones, melodies and rhythms that we know, develop? As far back as the Stone Ages, people started to create and discover the first instruments used to make music. Over the centuries important composers such as Bach, Schubert and later Schönberg took a closer look at music and discovered new ways of putting tones into order and melodies. Whether it be composer, musician or those who just have a strong interest in music – all have one thing in common – the love of music. Directors Daniel Barenboim and Nikolaus Harnoncourt talk about sound and old instruments, opera singer Cecilia Bartoli speaks about castratos, violinist Daniel Hope shares insight on his love of the violin, whereas singer Thomas Quasthoff and Sting reflect on the voice and the relationship between rock and classic music.
