Sea 100 % In the new volume of the successful natural book series, seal, crab and seagull show how they live and what exciting things are to be discovered in the ocean and at the beach. Which fish has red spots? What do shrimps look like? And which plants grow on the ocean floor? Easy texts and bold illustrations help children learn more about life in the ocean. Katrin Wiehle uses distinct shapes, subdued colours and simply lovable characters to playfully arouse the interest in sealife of even the youngest.

When a wave of RAGE overcomes you ... © private
Sometimes you get so mad that you don’t know how to get out of things again. A picture book about a strong emotion, by two great picture book artists. When Lisa gets angry, her shadow gets very long and she could tie knots in every tree or would love to send everyone packing. Lisa stomps her feet, pounds her fists and growls. And then she screams until her anger bursts. Using empathy and humor, Janisch and Olten gently show children how to find the way out of the maze of negative feelings and anger.
Heinz Janisch, born in 1960, works as an editor and moderator for ORF radio and lives near Vienna. He has published many children’s and youth books, many of which have received awards, including the Austrian Children’s and Youth Award. Most recently his book Lili lässt es schneien/ Lili Lets it Snow (illustrations by Søren Jessen) appeared on the Beltz & Gelberg list. Manuela Olten, born in 1970, studied visual communication at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (design) in Offenbach and lives and works as a freelance illustrator in Offenbach. She has published numerous picture books, including her truly successful titles Echte Kerle/Real Guys, Wahre Freunde/True Friends.

The tree travels across the ocean, arrives at a saw mill and is made into a chair – which the sloth is hanging upside down on. It would never leave its tree, no matter what. Camping vacationers face many challenges and pitfalls each year, whether it be setting up the tent, putting up with unpleasant neighbours or swarms of mosquitos. Nevertheless, this young boy thinks camping at the seaside is the greatest thing in the world, because it never gets boring, there are undreamt-of liberties and friends are easy make. A picture book full of small scenes out of everyday life at the campground and fantastic illustrations which picture moments when camping turns into a true adventure. »Where others write diaries, Philip Waechter draws – humorous, tender, full of chaos, depth, nonsense, everyday routine and special moments we all recognize, but forget much too quickly.« ELTERN family

»People were just too ignorant. Something always had to happen before they became wise ...« Lina lives up in the mountains and feels very lonesome. Yet the small blue bird, Nino, helps her to see the world through other eyes. A wonderful story by Klaus Kordon, which revolves around the most important thing in life – friendship. Cover: Jasmin Schäfer/Sehen ist Gold – Franziska Walther
Lina is a somewhat sullen young girl, because she lives on a mountain farm that is quite isolated. The animals call her »sourpuss« – Eugene the rooster, Helene the pig, Ottilie the cow and Melchior, the talkative raven. Lina wants nothing to do with Oskar, the boy who recently came to live on Goats’ Hill. Yet it is Oskar who lastly finds her after she falls and spends a terrible stormy night outdoors in the mountains.

Stefanie Höfler, born in 1978, studied German literature, English and Scandanavian studies in Freiburg and Dundee/Scotland. She works as a teacher and drama teacher in Esslingen, where she lives with her family. Mucks is her first book to be published.
At the pool this crazy summer, eccentric Zonja meets Mucks, who looks like a Martian, and she even saves his life a little bit. A very unusual story about friendship, told in such a warm-hearted and amusing fashion that you feel like reading the book over again right away. Zonja’s curiousity is boundless, which is why most of the people in her class think she is crazy. Who cares! Zonja with a »Z« loves to watch people at the pool and make up statistics. On this certain day, she fishes a boy with green swimming trunks and protruding ears, thin as a young birch tree, out of the water because he can’t swim. Strange. They play Scrabble, gaze at the stars together and eat many pancakes – actually Mucks is the first person to become her real friend in years. Yet there is something very peculiar about him, and it takes all summer until she really knows why he dances in the rain and what the bruises and pepper spray mean.

»The story by the writer Regina Dürig, whose debut Katertag won several prizes, stands out with its eloquent language and the gentle narrative. By describing Leo as an unforgettable character, whose detachment is obvious, she is able to avoid an analysis and thus lets readers’ imaginations run free. Together with the main figure, Jonna, we ask ourselves which story Leo is carrying around with him. We feel attracted by his apparent independence or frightened by his ghostly foreignness. In doing so, the author skillfully plays with world literary motifs and always maintains a fully independent narrative style.« Explanation of the jury for the Peter Härtling Prize

Diverse everyday situations call for children to be couragous and cautious. How do I react when a big dog approaches me? How does it feel to sleep under the stars at night? How do I protect someone who is being bullied by others? Children who know how to use a stove, have lit a fire themselves and know how to state their opinion in a loud voice are much better prepared to deal with danger and challenges. For only those who have actually dealt with difficult situations are able to develop practical solutions.

MAO To some he is a superstar, to others a brutal dictator – today some even only know him as a pop icon. Charlotte Kerner succeeds in presenting Mao Zedong (1893 – 1976) in all his controversy and explains why the farmer’s son not only changed his own world, but also the whole world. A critical, soundly researched and dedicated biography.
Cover: Rothfos & Gabler
Mao Zedong, whose picture still hangs on the gate of Heavenly Peace in the center of Beijing, is the founder of the People’s Republic of China and the most famous Chinese in the world. As a revolutionary and ruler, Mao created and shaped modern China – up until the present. The personal revolt of the farmer’s son Zedong marks the beginning of this Chinese biography. Not only was his own future uncertain and doubtful at the beginning of the 20th century, but also that of his home country and a new, rebellious youth that not only wanted to understand the world, but also to change it. First by taking a look back, the future development of the world power in the 21st century becomes fathomable and comprehensible. For in today’s China, whose global influence is greater today than ever before, Mao still plays a very unique role as an identity-establisher.
