GCSE Graphics Showcase

A project that started with ink being dropped in to water and photographed... with great imagination, and lots of work, the designs evolved in to the professional looking ideas showcased here. Well done, girls!

Belvedere Ezine | Winter Edition 2015

Our A Level Graphics students have just completed their mocks. Some of their work was of a very high standard. Owing to the fact the students use industry standard software (Photoshop, Illustrator and In Design) and have access to photographic studios, not only are they producing professional looking design work, they also are fully equipped for a role in the ever growing creative industries.

Top Left: Nadia’s colourful ink and mixed media illustrations for Tarot cards. Top Right: Ellis’ book cover design for Japanese Folklore realised beautifully on an bus stand advertisement. Above: Emily’s poster for the V&A questioning what is beauty. Above right: Laura’s campaign to promote respect for our police, fire and ambulance crews and Heather’s mixed media DVD cover for a range of superhero films. Right: Liz’s clever brand identity for a Liverpool sight seeing company called ‘ExciteSeeing’ realised on an information sign and Amber’s retro-50’s inspired packaging for a range of healthy foods and drinks.

Year 13’s Personal Investigation

This year’s Graphics GCSE cohort have done exceptionally well in their two year course. Over half the students gained an A* and a fantastic 76% gained either an A* or A grade. Mr Dykeaylen, Subject Leader of Graphics is extremely proud of the girls and some of their excellent projects are showcased here. A special mention must also go out for A Level Graphics. This was, again, successful with 75% of the grades being A*-B and 50% being A*.

Summer 2016

Belvedere Graphics helps set national standard There are new curriculum reforms for the Graphic Communication GCSE; this means that from September 2016 the WJEC Eduqas GCSE will have a new grading system with 1-9 introduced, where 9 is the top grade (and this replaces current A* to G). So how do students now achieve the very top marks in the very top grading band? Mr Dykeaylen, Subject Leader of Graphics is pleased to announce that work from Belvedere Graphics students has been selected as an exemplar of work that meets the top band, and that would classify as Grade 9 work (above the existing A* grade). This work has been selected from students and schools nationwide as an example of outstanding design and teaching practice. Teachers across the country will be downloading packs from the Eduqas website and seeing our work as examples of where

to take their students’ projects in order to achieve Band 5 (the top tier) marking. Not only was Belvedere Graphics work selected to show how to get top band in Graphics ‘Portfolio’ (the coursework element - see Claire Foulkes’ work, below left) but it was also used to show how to get the top band in the ‘Externally Set Assignment’ (the exam work element - see Amber Garcia’s work, below right). Amber’s written work was also used as an example of how to complete the ‘Creative Statement’. Well done to Claire and Amber, let’s hope you continue this, and that your A Level Graphics work will feature in future exemplars! There were many girls from the same cohort whose work could have been featured to highlight top band design! Mr Dykeaylen hopes to keep Graphics as an exciting, pioneering subject which will

prepare the girls for the buoyant Creative Industries; these are a British success story. In 2013 one in twelve jobs in the United Kingdom was in the creative economy. The sector grew by 66,000 jobs between 2012 and 2013. Between 1997 and 2013, employment in the creative economy increased from 1.81m jobs to 2.62m jobs – roughly a four times greater increase than in the UK economy as a whole. The Gross Value Added (GVA) of the creative industries was £76.9bn in 2013 – five per cent of the UK economy. In 2013, for the third year running, the creative industries proportion of total UK GVA was higher than the year before, and at 5.0 per cent is now as high as has ever been recorded – and it was higher than any other individual sector.1 1

Year 10 Graphics A-Z Posters

Mr Dykeaylen set his Y10 GCSE Graphics group a poster challenge. They had to design an ‘Alphabet of Liverpool’ poster. The task required them to find and photograph letters around the city and then produce a poster for a tourism company. Skills involved mastering PHOTOGRAPHY, LOGO DESIGN, GRIDS and POSTER LAYOUT. The girls really engaged with the project and produced some great ideas and well designed posters. A special mention must go to Ayla-Ray Cole’s poster (above); her brilliant photography made letters from everyday objects found around the city and her stylish grid design led to a contemporary and professional final design. A great eye for imagery and design, well done, Ayla!

Spring Edition 2017

belvedere As well as producing some fantasic examples of Graphic Design, the Graphics GCSE students also undertake a photography module. Whilst compiling the final designs for the forthcoming Creative Arts exhibition, Mr Dykeaylen felt that this photographs from our current Y11 group were too good to not get some publicity! The work here includes examples of double exposure photography, where two images are working in juxtaposition, through to studies of tone and form, ‘popping’ colours - where a colour is isolated from a black and white image. Some really professional and outstanding work from our Graphics students!

Year 13 Graphics - A Focus on Illustration Graphics covers a wide range of design diciplines. Here is a showcase of some of our Year 13’s work, with a focus on Illustration. As you can see , the variety of work ranges from drawing with 3D pens to collage, 3D designs combined with 2D (on the first day stamps cover) through to tradition hand drawn and computer illustration. A great variety of work and styles!

12th best A Level in the whole country! This year, the Art and Graphics departments celebrated a recent report by Oxford Analytics. This report stated that the successes of our A Level Art and Graphics cohort put us 12th in the whole country for value added progress. Why not consider an A Level in either Art or Graphics and help us develop your skills even further!

GRaPHICS y11 SHOWCaSE December saw my Year 11 class sit their Graphics Mock; they produced designs in response to a brief that asked them to produce a retail environment with a Natural or Urban theme. The girls have produced, arguably, the strongest outcomes for a mock exam - well done, everyone! There are so many great designs, but not enough room to showcase them all.
