Righto. Living in the 21st century feels like living on a volcano, but live we do and live we must, for all we’ve got. This year we’re presenting a season of plays about people trying to make a better life on the volcano. We’ll present these plays the only way we know how – not with splashes of cash and whizzbangery, but with all the love and imagination we can muster. The world is a mess, and some of these stories are set in the messier parts of the mess, but the people in these stories are all reaching for something better. More joy, less misery. More play, less deadly seriousness. More panache, more love, more wild leaps of imagination, more possibility. More life.
On the home front, poor gorgeous old Sydney seems to be on the verge of another one of its epochal makeovers. If the wowsers and property developers have their way the only thing happening after midnight in Sydney will be tree-felling. Here in our little theatre on a Surry Hills side street we will dream about greater things, for Sydney and this volcano of a world. We will present varied stories of varied lives, we will hew what rough magic we can, and we will play and play and play until, perhaps, the serious turn wry, the brutal soften, and the dreamers run the joint. At any rate it will be a ride. Welcome to our 2017 season.

FIGHTER A Congolese refugee getting by in the Australian suburbs, Isa has a background that seems unimaginable in his new country – a childhood as a boy soldier, fighting for the same forces that massacred his family. Now, he has a chance to gain fame and fortune. Isa’s a brilliant boxer, and he has a shot at the national title. But his most difficult opponent isn’t in the ring – it’s the terrors of his past.
I saw this show at La Boite in Brisbane and it’s a real event – theatre made of storytelling and sport, led by two astonishing performances. Its writer, Future D. Fidel, fled the Congo as a child and lived in a Tanzanian camp for eight years before being granted refugee status. I’m thrilled it will find a Sydney home at Belvoir, and I’m thrilled to welcome Pach Mzembe back to Belvoir for the first time since Gwen in Purgatory. – Eamon

MARK COLVIN’S
KIDNEY A premiere Australian play based on actual events, showing just how startling real-life can be. Mary-Ellen Field is a successful Australian business consultant in London – until she’s accused of betraying secrets to the press. Her life comes crashing down, and she starts to wonder if she’s losing her mind. Then it emerges that her phone was being illegally tapped by reporters, and she sets out on a campaign to restore her reputation. But along the way, her ideas of redemption change – she’s been interviewed by a journalist on the other side of the world, and his story puts everything into a new perspective.
In plays like Gwen in Purgatory and Holding The Man, Tommy Murphy keeps finding these unlikely great theatrical figures, and Mary-Ellen Field is no exception. I’ve become really enamoured of Mary-Ellen’s bizarre heroic quality and her optimism, it’s surprising, it’s original. And to have this part played by Sarah Peirse – she’s so charismatic, whipsmart. When you see Sarah get the taste of a role, it’s thrilling to watch. – Eamon

Mr BURNS A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY A catastrophe has brought the civilised world to an end. Survivors huddle around a fire, pondering the world without electricity, and the things they will never see again. To console themselves, they piece together an episode of The Simpsons, clinging to one of the few memories they all share. Fast forward seven years and we’re in a post-apocalyptic society. A troupe of players wander the land, providing connection with a mythic past – by playing out the classic Simpsons episodes: Springfield has become a Golden Age. Fast forward a generation. A feudal world of sorts has sprung from the ruins, and at its core is an intense religion of musical theatre, featuring a pantheon of strangely recognisable gods…
There’s a lot of great entertainments in the season this year but Mr Burns is just extraordinary. It manages to be a quite profound play about the brutal times we’re entering into, but it does so with such inventiveness and showmanship that the world outside the theatre could end and you wouldn’t notice. And by the way, Mitchell Butel is too talented at too many different things. Come and see him act and sing and dance at Belvoir. Sometimes all at once! – Eamon

They’re led by Willmore, a seventeenth-century playboy old. And also, what a treat who’s been round the block a few to have Toby Schmitz back times and survives by his wit and at Belvoir as the Rover exuberance. But then he meets a himself. – Eamon The classic 1677 battle of the sexes, by the first professional woman playwright, Aphra Behn.

HIR Isaac has come home from the blood and horror of a foreign war to look after his sick Dad, only to find a family home that looks like a bomb has gone off. And, in a way, that’s just what’s happened. It turns out his younger sibling is transgender, his Mum isn’t under the thumb of her domineering husband any more, and they’re going to smash the Patriarchy to smithereens.
Come and watch Helen Thomson go to town in a cracker of a leading role in what seems to be a conventional play but is actually almost a vaudeville – of America, war, money, gender. You’ll see all those things differently by the time we’re through. It’s also hilarious. – Eamon

GHOSTS Since the death of her charismatic but abusive husband, Helene Alving has been treading water in a sea of empty days. What keeps her going is a deeply held belief that salvation can only lie in telling her son Oswald the truth about his father. Pam and I wanted to work together again after The Glass Menagerie and we both independently came to Ghosts. It’s a play from over a century ago about a woman who tries to find a way to deal with the Problem of Men, of male sexual aggression. It’s just a classic, riveting masterpiece. – Eamon

Lally Katz is on a journey. She’s left Australia behind and she’s in the country of her childhood, trying to find a way back to when things were innocent. Her relationships are chaotic, her professional life is a shambles and contemporary America seems riddled with charlatans and shysters. But along the way moments of wisdom bubble up, as if from some lost ancient city beneath the waves off Florida…
Lally mixes dreaming as a playwright and dreaming as a person – there’s no line between them. This one’s about her, travelling into a mess of love and America, refusing to accept the world is doomed. The whirligig of this latter-day Don Quixote is bursting with playfulness, with imagination – Lally seems to be saying that’s what will save us all and make this bleak world beautiful. – Eamon
Five women play the myriad characters of Lally’s life: ageing Jewish grandparents in Miami, wizened taxi drivers, cynical prophets, unhappy pharmacists, clowns, hip-hop artistes, narcissists, angels, animals – and, of course, Lally herself.

I heard Ursula and Casey sing these songs about three years ago. I get to see some fabulous things in my job but this was really electrifying. Urs doesn’t just have an incredible voice, she’s taken the idea of black rage and sung it out – and it’s so bold, so theatrical, so joyful. It’s With Ursula Yovich as Barbara Rock ‘n’ Roll, it’s politics and and Casey Donovan as her it’s very moving. – Eamon Meet Barbara and her band the Camp Dogs. Barbara’s been trying to make it in Sydney but maybe this just isn’t her town. In all the relentless demands of city life, where’s the sense of belonging she craves? It’s time to take a break with her cousin René.

JONES The 2016 smash hit returns to Belvoir for a quick season before it hits the road. The backblocks of Western Australia. It’s 1965 and Charlie Bucktin’s thirteen and smart. But when blamed-for-everything Jasper Jones appears at his window one night, Charlie’s out of his depth. Jasper has stumbled on the body of a local girl in the scrub, and he knows he’s the first suspect – that goes with the colour of his skin. He needs every ounce of Charlie’s brains if the truth is to emerge before Jasper finds himself at the pointy end of a deep anger. As the boys negotiate the secrets of a small town, the winds of change blow – but how do teenage Australians solve the riddles of a Grown-Up World? Kate Mulvany’s adaptation of Craig Silvey’s award-winning novel is daggy-funny and wise. A comingof-age story for a generation, and a nation too.

THE DOG / THE CAT This double bill was a sleeper hit when it played Downstairs in 2015. Now it returns, this time on the Upstairs stage. The Dog, Brendan Cowell’s not-soflattering portrait of the tricky line between mateship and romance, and of the insatiable appetite of Jack Russells for the most disgusting things they can find.
Lally and Brendan and Ralph managed to reinvent the rom-com for the stage in a way that was completely beguiling and very, very funny. It was clear at the end of its season that its life was far from over. – Eamon
And The Cat, Lally Katz’s fable of the perils of co-owning a feline with your ex, and the things a cat would say if he was allowed to speak his mind.

Tash and her Dad have hit the road – they’re going home to country, where the sky is higher and the world goes on forever. It’s time for Tash to take him home.

BALLARD
BO U N D LE S S P LAINS TO S HAR E The little-known second verse of the Australian national anthem claims that we have ‘boundless plains to share’, but boat arrivals, Christmas Island, Nauru, mandatory detention and abject human misery have made a liar of the tune, and comedian Tom Ballard (2016 Helpmann Award Winner for Best Comedy Performer) has some things to say about it. Funny, furious and close-to-thebone, you’ve not experienced advancing Australia fair quite like this before.
Tom’s a great comedian, we know that, but also a deep thinker and lover of storytelling – and in this show he pours all of it into a charming and funny act of fury. – Eamon

Modern India, a world of cyberspace and ancient gods. In the swirling buzz of a railway station, a young girl is abandoned and brings the place to a standstill with a beautiful song. Among the throng is a poor chaiwallah (teaseller) and in that sweet moment his life is turned upside-down. Our Guru (Jacob Rajan) is a bucktoothed chameleon, channelling seventeen different characters and dispensing questionable spiritual wisdom as he plays out a serpentine tale of impossible love and modern-day magic.

In the spirit of the idea that theatre is for EVERYONE, here’s a real little gem for little and big people alike, all the way from (little) New Zealand. – Eamon

THE BALNAVES FOUNDATION Supporting the presentation of Barbara and the Camp Dogs and Which Way Home The Balnaves Foundation is a private philanthropic organisation that was established in 2006 by Neil Balnaves AO to provide support to charitable enterprises across Australia. It supports eligible organisations that aim to create a better Australia through education, medicine and the arts with a focus on young people, the disadvantaged and Indigenous communities. The Balnaves Foundation has been funding Belvoir’s Indigenous theatre program since 2011. Each year, the Foundation provides the financial underpinning for Belvoir to present two Indigenous works. A range of access programs are attached to the productions, including an unwaged performance and schools matinees. Showing its commitment to Indigenous work at Belvoir, The Balnaves Foundation has supported our productions of The Drover’s Wife, Title and Deed, Jack Charles vs The Crown, Windmill Baby, Beautiful One Day, Don’t Take Your Love to Town, The Cake Man, Coranderrk, 20 Questions,
54
Brothers Wreck, Radiance and Kill the Messenger. In 2017, the Foundation will support Barbara and the Camp Dogs and Which Way Home. In addition, 2017 represents the sixth year of the annual Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s Award – a $20,000 award comprising $7,500 prize money and a $12,500 commission for a new play. Belvoir has a long history of working with Indigenous artists, including writers, directors, designers and actors, and of portraying unique Indigenous stories. Under Artistic Director Eamon Flack, we continue our commitment to presenting significant Indigenous works and engaging Indigenous artists at Belvoir in both our Upstairs and Downstairs theatres. Belvoir extends our warmest thanks to The Balnaves Foundation for its ongoing support.
THIS IS KIANU Kianu likes Drama, and he’s good at it too. When he performs Kianu is charismatic, smart, funny and confident. He steals the scene and your heart. We know this – and he knows this – because Kianu is a recent graduate of Belvoir’s Youth Express: a theatre outreach program run by our Education team in partnership with specialist schools for at-risk youth.
Please help us continue to provide these kinds of opportunities for kids like Kianu by making a donation with your subscription in 2017. If you would like more information you can visit belvoir.com.au/support or call us on 02 8396 6209.
The focus of Belvoir’s Education program is on providing equal opportunity for high school students across NSW to access the very best in arts experiences and education. We seek to bridge the gap between metropolitan and regional students by sending our artists to regional centres to run practical, curriculumaligned theatre workshops, and subsidise theatre tickets for HSC Drama students whose families can’t afford to take them. In these ways, and more, we connect with over 10,000 kids every year.

For more than thirty years Belvoir has engaged Australia’s most prominent and promising playwrights, directors, actors and designers to concoct an annual season of work that is dynamic, challenging and visionary. Belvoir’s position as one of Australia’s most innovative and acclaimed theatre companies has been determined by such landmark productions as The Glass Menagerie, Angels in America, The Wild Duck, The Diary of a Madman, The Book of Everything, Cloudstreet, Keating!, The Alchemist, The Sapphires, Medea and many, many more. Today, under Artistic Director Eamon Flack and Executive Director Brenna Hobson, we tour nationally, internationally, and continue to create our own brand of rough magic for new generations of audiences, here in the heart of Sydney. belvoir.com.au
