Applications sought for Julie Campbell Ringle Scholarship

Chapter EX is accepting applications for the Julie Campbell Ringle Memorial Scholarship through April 30.
To be considered for the $2,000 scholarship, an applicant must have completed one academic year in a post-secondary institution toward a qualifying health care field of study.
Applicants must also be a woman from the Bemidji area, have graduated from a Bemidji school or be currently living in Bemidji and committed to a career in the area, a release said.
The scholarship was established in memory of Julie Ringle, a former oncology nurse, volunteer Girl Scout leader and P.E.O. Chapter EX president. Shortly after her death in an automobile accident in 1993, the chapter began building a scholarship fund for a woman planning on a career in health care, the release said.

Summer Theater Day Camp set for June
BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department and Bemidji Community Theater will hold Summer Theater Day Camp from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays and
Fridays, June 5-16.
During the day camp, participants will be placed in a camp section based on their age, interest and performance experience. Skill sections include basic stagecraft, advanced performance, script-writing, musical theater and tech and set design, a release said. This camp is also known as BCT JR. John Egelhof to offer beginner bagpipe meetings
BEMIDJI — Bagpiper
John Egelhof will hold beginner bagpipe interest group meetings from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, at First Lutheran Church, 900 Bemidji Ave. N.
Attendees should be interested in Celtic/Gaelic bagpipe music and learning this storied instrument, a release said.
Participants must have a hand size sufficient to cover the holes on a practice instrument, called a practice chanter. Attendees must obtain a practice chanter and tutor book to begin learning.
Limited tutoring will be available during the meeting.
Egelhof has been a member of the New Hampshire Law Enforcement Association Pipes and Drums, taught at the Headwaters School of Music and Arts and played with local bands.

NMF seeks applicants for inclusive, welcoming communities grants
BEMIDJI — The Northwest Minnesota Foundation is seeking funding proposals for efforts aimed at improving the outcomes for individuals who have experienced homelessness.
The Racial Equity Accountability Grants support a Northwest Continuum of Care project aimed at identifying, dismantling and de-colonizing instances of racism within the regional homeless response system, a release said.
“The Racial Equity Accountability Project is focused on improving the region’s current system of coordinated entry, which is the primary way individuals access supportive housing services in the Northwest service area,” added the release.
Examples of funding potentials include:
• Initiatives to increase cultural competencies, including costs associated with providing and organizing training and professional development for staff working with those experiencing homelessness.
• Initiatives to develop stronger relations between those living through homelessness and supportive housing staff. This can be
accomplished through culturally relevant events and opportunities for the community to express their cultural identity, such as sweat lodges, traditional ceremonies, drum circles, talking circles, community meals, support groups or other events related to specific cultural and racial identities.
• Initiatives to increase stabilization, which could include providing job training and acquisition opportunities for individuals leaving homelessness.
Eligible applicants are nonprofits, public agencies and tribal organizations located within the Northwest Minnesota Foundation service area that includes the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Red Lake and White Earth
Nations along with Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake Falls and Roseau Counties.
The maximum grant award is $7,500, with average funding expected to be between $2,000 and $7,500. The total funding available is $30,000.
The deadline to apply for these grants is Tuesday, April 30.

Itasca Waters to present ‘Loon Restoration in Minnesota’

Itasca Waters will continue its online Practical Water Wisdom Series at noon on Thursday, April 4, with “Loon Restoration in Minnesota” presented by Jayden Jech, a Loon Specialist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Nongame Wildlife Program.
The series runs for an hour beginning at noon, typically on the first Thursday of each month. The webinars are free, open to all and include an interactive Q&A session.
”Jayden works to promote the conservation and restoration of loons in Minnesota by conducting surveys, developing management plans, and supporting stewardship through public outreach as part of the Minnesota Loon Restoration Project,” a release said. “Jayden continues to be amazed by loons’ charismatic calls, unique life history, and ability to inspire and unite people in his role.”
Participants will explore loon biology, threats facing loons and ways to support the
conservation of the species. Itasca Waters will share information about the Minnesota Loon Restoration Project and opportunities to participate in ongoing community scientific efforts with the Minnesota DNR Nongame Wildlife Program, the release added.

Watermark’s annual high school show opens April 5

Art Center’s annual high school invitational show opens Friday, April 5, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., at Watermark, 505 Bemidji Ave. N.
On display will be student work from high school art programs at Bemidji, Cass Lake-Bena, Laporte, TrekNorth and Voyageurs.
April visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to cast ballots for their favorite pieces including photography, painting, mixed media and more. The last day to vote in the People’s Choice awards is April 20.
The annual high school show is one of Watermark’s most highly attended exhibits. Work will be displayed through April 26 with awards presented on April 25.

Open Mic and CoffeeHouse event set for April 5
BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts will host an Open Mic and CoffeeHouse featuring P2 at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.
P2 is the musical collaboration of Prabin Lama on vocals and guitar and Pete McDonnell on percussion, two Bemidji State professors who met over a shared love of music in the campus library, a release said.
A native of Katmandu, Nepal, Lama found his voice singing with friends at his Indian boarding school. As an undergraduate in New Dehli, Lama developed his talents over countless open mics with friends and local musicians before moving to the U.S. to further his education.
McDonnell, who hails from Chicago, found his
niche as a drumming librarian. He learned rock drumming from his college roommates and eventually branched off into varied percussion styles. The drummer for Bemidji’s Mudsong, McDonnell facilitates drum circles and other community-based rhythm events, the release said. Held on the first Friday of most months, the Headwaters Open Mic offers a welcoming and supportive community for musicians and spoken-word performers. It features local actors Katie Carter, Cynthia Booth, Maggie Carlson, Polly Scotland and Cate Belleveau.
The reading will celebrate what would be Mary Welsh Hemingway’s 116th birthday on April 5.
Growing up in Bemidji and Walker, she would have spent hours in the Carnegie Library as a child and a young woman, a release said.
This event will not be a full theatrical production like the theater previously performed in Bemidji, Walker and New York City, added the release.

Workshop on history of polka music and dance set for April 6
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Public Library, in collaboration with the Beltrami County Historical Society, will host “They Brought Their Songs: International Folk Music in Minnesota,” at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, at the library, 509 America Ave.
”Join us for a workshop on the history of polka music and dance plus a great performance by the Cathy Erickson Band,” a release said. “This is an exciting and culturally enriching partnership and series that seeks to celebrate the diverse and vibrant tapestry of international folk music in Beltrami County.”
Erickson is a wellrenowned national recording polka artist with over 45 years of
experience entertaining all ages with accordion music.
The Cathy Erickson Band shares their love for music for all occasions at dances, weddings, funerals, county fairs, special events and polka services at different churches throughout the area and with residents at nursing homes and group homes, the release said.
Participants will enjoy “a good steady beat and a taste for old-time that will put you on your feet,” added the release.
The event is free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed on the Bemidji Public Library Facebook page.

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Area Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship of America chapter is set to meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, in the First Baptist Church Community Room, 1555 Paul Bunyan Drive NW.

The keynote speaker will be 20-year-old Hans Berg. Berg will share about his mission trip to India, Nepal and Kyrgyzstan through Youth with a Mission, including what he did during his time there, the impact it had on his life and how it has shaped the way he thinks about the world, a release said.
Berg was born and raised in Bemidji and he grew up going to church events and Bible camps
and worked at Bethany Bible Camp in Bemidji, and Lutheran Valley Retreat near Florissant, Colo.
He has also had many other jobs including construction, sales, gym equipment installer and maintenance worker. He enjoys working with his hands where he can see the physical results of his labor. In his free time, he enjoys anything outdoors including hunting, fishing, camping, motorcycling and many other activities.
Berg is currently in his third year of a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology with a minor in project management at Bemidji State University.
Great River Rescue announces Pet Fixers clinic schedule
BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host low-cost spay and neuter clinics through its Pet Fixers program this year.
Qualified pet owners and caretakers can get their pets spayed or neutered and receive other low-cost preventative care services, including vaccinations and microchips, at an upcoming weekend clinic, a release said.
Clinics are typically held once per month at Great River Rescue, located at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE.

Mosaic glass workshop
Participants can sign up to create a stunning stained glass mosaic bird
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at Watermark Art Center, 505 Bemidji Ave. N.
JoAnn McFarlin will teach attendees various techniques, including glass cutting, proper adhesive use, grouting and color composition, a release said. This class is geared toward adults and the cost is $65 plus $10 for materials.
Registration is required. The finished piece will be approximately nine inches by four inches and ready to hang.
Basket weaving course
Local artist Shannon Lucas-Westrum will lead a two-day basket weaving course from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 26, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Watermark.
Participants will create their own large farmers market basket while they learn the making of a filled woven base, weaving with flat and round reeds, twining, wrapping handles and making their own accent cordage from locally harvested grasses and leaves, the release said. Attendees aged 16 and older of all experience levels are welcome. Registration is required. The cost is $60, which includes both days and materials.
Intercultural creative
circles
Participants are invited to drop in for the next series of Watermark’s intercultural creative circles, scheduled for Wednesdays, April 17 through May 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The six sessions will focus on embellishment techniques from both Woodland and Scandinavian traditions including Indigenous ribbon applique arts (Osage and HoChunk style), painting with natural dyes on hide, embroidery and woodland applique, the release said.
Nancy Kingbird will lead this round of sessions with special guests such as Rick Kagibe, Wendy Roy and Karen Goulet.

Adult participants can enjoy a relaxing
afternoon of glazing pottery pieces at a Pottery and Pints class from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. Attendees have the opportunity to bring their favorite beer to enjoy with provided light appetizers as instructor Tom Daly walks them through the process of glazing two pre-made pieces, such as a beer mug, wine mug, plate or bowl, a release said.
Participants can also try out the pottery wheel or other basic pottery techniques. There will be plenty of breaks for socializing and enjoying beer and food. No art experience is required.
The cost is $45 and this class is for participants age 21 and older.
Porch Pottery
Participants of all ages can create their own porch pots to give as a Mother’s Day gift or enjoy all summer during the Porch Pottery class series.
Attendees will be given up to 25 pounds of clay to make one or more planters from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21. Participants will glaze their pots from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 4.
From 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the last day of class on Saturday, May 11, participants will come to pick up their finished pieces and choose vegetable and
flower seedlings to bring home and plant. A light lunch will also be provided.

BEMIDJI — The United States Air Force Band and Singing Sergeants will stop in Bemidji on their 12-day community relations tour, performing at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, at Bemidji High School, 2900 Division St. W.
The Concert Band and Singing Sergeants are two of the six performing ensembles within The United States Air Force Band.
The community relations tour travels through North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin, honoring the service of
Airmen both past and present in a showcase of musical excellence, a release said.

Parks and Rec to offer ‘Daughters and Dads: Relaxed and Enlightened’ classes
BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will host “Daughters and Dads: Relaxed and Enlightened” classes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, April 10 and 24, at the Historic Carnegie Library, 426 Bemidji Ave. N.
”Do you ever think about the missed opportunities with your dad when you were a kid?” a release said. “There are many things that get in the way of bond building:
work, chores, fatigue, overscheduled kids or a general disconnect.”
In this class, dad and daughter duos can experience shared inquiry with bond-building activities that may include drawing pictures, one-on-one conversations or micro-projects. Then, participants will enjoy gentle joints and glands movements, breathing and guided relaxation, a release said. Daughters and dads will then return to a oneon-one conversation about the experience to wrap up the class. Attendees should bring a yoga mat and blanket for each person. Some will be available to borrow on a first-come, firstserved basis. The class is designed for ages seven and up.

United Way seeks Housing Trust Fund Cabinet members
BEMIDJI — The United Way of Bemidji Area is looking for individuals to fill various positions on the Housing Trust Fund Cabinet, each bringing unique expertise and perspectives to the table.
The Beltrami County Housing Trust Fund is dedicated to addressing housing needs within the community. On behalf of United Way of Bemidji Area, this cabinet will work collaboratively with local stakeholders to allocate funds to organizations and initiatives aimed at increasing housing units and enhancing housing stability, a release said.
Cabinet positions include commercial or real-estate banker; construction project manager; rural representative; commercial land owner or developer; Beltrami
County commissioner; Beltrami County staff person; and a United Way of Bemidji Area board member. The cabinet will also include the Director of Health and Human Services and the Director of the United Way.
Cabinet members will collaborate with other dedicated members to allocate funds for the development of affordable housing solutions in our community. Other duties include community needs assessments, policy development, listening sessions and financial oversight.
Applicants should be committed to making a difference, reside in or have close ties to Beltrami County and possess relevant skills and experience, the release said.
”The Housing Trust Fund Cabinet plays a crucial role in understanding county housing needs and effectively allocating
resources to projects and programs,” said the release.

Applications open for Artists Engage Community Grant
BEMIDJI — Applications for Region 2 Arts Councils’ new Artists Engage Community Grant are due by Monday, April 15.
Artists Engage Community grants support the creation, production and presentation of highquality arts activities that help instill the arts into the community and public life in the region.
Arts activities proposed for funding must be artist-led, accessible by the public and connect with community members through the arts.
”Eligible grant proposals must connect and engage with audiences, participants, students, and/or communities to provide new and/or expanded arts programming to residents of our region’s counties and/or remove barriers that audiences may have to access arts activities,” a release said.
The maximum award is $6,000.
Eligible applicants must reside in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods or Mahnomen Counties.

Free tax preparation assistance available
BEMIDJI — The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program will again provide free tax preparation assistance, especially for people over age 50 or with a low to moderate income through April 15 at the Bemidji Senior Center.
The Tax-Aide office will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays with walk-in service. No appointments will be made; clients will be seen on a first-come, first-
served basis. Anyone wanting to file a tax return will need to bring a photo ID, social security cards for all individuals on the return, documents showing all forms of income, amounts of deductible items such as charitable contributions, information about health insurance coverage and last year’s tax return if it is available.
If applying for a renter’s or homestead credit refund, the certificate of rent paid or 2024 property tax statement is also needed.
This free service is provided by the Bemidji Senior Center, the AARP Foundation, IRS and the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

Bemidji Rotary clubs seek students to sponsor for youth leadership camp
BEMIDJI — Bemidji’s Noon and Sunrise Rotary Clubs are looking to sponsor high school students in 10th or 11th grade to attend Camp RYLA, a youth leadership camp sponsored by the organization each summer.
RYLA, which stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, is a week-long leadership camp held at the University of Minnesota Crookston, where high school students learn and develop their leadership skills while forging lifelong friendships. Students will have the opportunity to meet their peers from across Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Canada while they participate in activities and challenges throughout the week as they learn about what leadership means for them.
This year’s camp will be held July 14-20, with an application deadline of April 30. All expenses will be covered by Rotary, and transportation to Crookston will be provided.

BEMIDJI — The Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area is participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program

Northern Minnesota’s Women’s Expo set for May 10-11
BEMIDJI — Northern Minnesota’s Largest Women’s Expo will be held on Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE.
This event will feature numerous vendors, demonstrations, wine tasting, selfie stations, a pop-up thrift store, a panel of women in business and a keynote speaker, a release said.
The entrance fee will cost $5, with 80% of the fee being donated to the Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter’s capital campaign.
“All donations will go toward our capital campaign (to build a new shelter),” Michelle Carlson, assistant director of the Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter, said in the release. “Building a new shelter offers privacy, dignity, and a chance to work toward moving on from intimate partner violence for our participants. It will also allow us to double the capacity of participants we can help.”
In previous years, this event has featured vendors such as florists, jewelers, fitness groups, yoga studios, spas, travel advisors, financial advisors, home improvement specialists, boutiques, photographers and more.
