Modern automobiles are technological marvels. As advancements in automotive technology have made cars more reliable than ever, drivers may feel as though vehicle ownership also is more hands-off than ever before.
Though its true built-in diagnostic technology is designed to alert drivers when issues arise, it can still benefit motorists to recognize when certain issues may arise.
Cars and the people who drive them are different, so mileage intervals are not always the best measuring stick for maintenance issues. However, the following rundown can serve as a guidebook for drivers who want to know what to expect at various mileage intervals.
30,000 miles: The experts at Auto Trader note that disposable engine air filters usually last between 15,000 and 30,000 miles. If it’s been around 30,000 miles since the engine air filter has been replaced, now is a good time to replace this important part, which prevents components like dirt and debris from getting into the engine. This also might be a good time to replace the fuel filter, which prevents debris from clogging fuel injectors.
50,000 to 60,000 miles: It’s around this time that drivers may need to replace their vehicle batteries. Little-used vehicles may need a new battery much earlier, as lengthy periods of little or no use adversely affect the life expectancy of vehicle batteries. Brakes also may need to be
replaced around this time, as the experts at AutoZone note that most drivers get between two and five years out of a set of brake pads. If that sounds like a significant disparity, it is, and that’s because driver behavior is a significant variable affecting the life of the pads. Drivers who brake hard will likely need to replace their brake pads with greater frequency than drivers who brake slowly.
• 50,000 to 90,000 miles: As noted, there is no uniform guideline governing when vehicle components will need to be replaced. Hoses are a good example of that, as recommendations regarding when to replace hoses range from 50,000 to 90,000 miles. That’s a significant gap, but drivers can be on the safe side and start discussing the status of
their hoses with their mechanics around the 50,000-mile marker. It’s unlikely the hoses will make it all the way to 90,000 miles before they need to be replaced, but drivers can keep that mileage marker in mind and aim to replace the hoses before that point even if no issue has arisen. Timing belts also tend to fail between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, so this is another part to consider replacing as a vehicle reaches this point. These mileage markers are not set in stone, and should only serve as a guideline for drivers who want to stay ahead of vehicle repairs. Drivers also are urged to discuss any additional changes that might be necessary with their mechanics during routine mainte-

Factors to consider before leasing in the current economic climate
No two drivers are the same, and that reality is evident when motorists look for a new vehicle. Some drivers may want a flashy sports car, while others hope to get a great deal on a spacious minivan. Drivers also may be looking for different types of deals when visiting a dealership.
Leasing was once a gateway to a new car for millions of drivers. However, the automotive experts at Edmunds note that leases made up 18% of transactions involving new vehicles in the middle of 2022. That figure represented a 27% decline from a year earlier. That decline could be a byproduct of several variables, including the value of trade-ins.
Edmunds notes that the average trade-in value of cars leased in 2020 is 19% higher than the predetermined residual value, which means it makes sense for some motorists to purchase their vehicles at the end of a lease rather than turn it in.
Despite the decline in leases, the option to lease can still make sense for some drivers. With that in mind, individuals who are considering leasing can consider these factors to ensure they make the best decision possible.
• Trade-in value: As noted above, the value of trade-ins is very high. However, that value could be vulnerable to considerable fluctuations. The spike in average trade-in values was related to supply-and-demand issues associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of those issues have lingered, which means the supply of new vehicles is still lagging with some manufacturers. With fewer new vehicles to sell, the value of vehicles coming off a lease could be much higher than the predetermined price lessees would pay to purchase the vehicle outright when their lease expires. Drivers may still prefer leasing to purchase, but in the current economic climate, it makes sense to determine the market value of a trade-in when their lease is set to expire.
Budget: Millions of motorists prefer leasing because monthly lease payments on new vehicles tend to be significantly less than it would cost them to purchase the vehicle and finance it through a bank or credit union. And that still holds true, as data from Experian indicates the average monthly payment for a financed vehicle is $667, which is $127 more than the average monthly cost of leasing a car or
truck. That’s a considerable cost benefit of leasing, particularly at a time when high inflation has forced millions of households to cut back.
Maintenance: Another factor to consider before leasing a vehicle is maintenance. Lessees are responsible for maintaining the vehicle during the lease terms, but new vehicles do not typically require the level of upkeep that older vehicles need. Drivers who are considering purchasing a leased vehicle when the lease expires should factor in the costs to maintain the vehicle in the years ahead, particularly if the manufacturer’s warranty is due to expire soon. Substantial maintenance costs could compromise drivers’ budgets, and that’s unlikely to happen if drivers turn in a leased car and begin a

3 simple maintenance strategies to help keep cars running longer
The last few years have not proven the most advantageous times for new car buyers. According to the Consumer Price Index Summary from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, buyers paid 12.2% more for new vehicles in January 2022 than they had in January 2021.
Faced with such a significant increase in price, many drivers understandably want to keep their current cars longer than they might have initially planned.
Data released by S&P Global Mobility in early 2022 indicated that the average vehicle on the road is 12 years and two months old, which marked the highest number in the 20-plus years such information was tracked. A host of variables affect how long drivers keep their cars, but the rising cost of new vehicles has undoubtedly compelled many drivers to aspire to keep their cars for longer periods of time.
Aging cars may require a little more TLC than vehicles that are right off the dealership lot. But the following are three simple tips that can help drivers keep their cars running longer.
1. Become a more
careful driver. A careful approach when behind the wheel is safer than aggressive driving and beneficial for your vehicle. When starting, avoid revving the engine, which needlessly wears it down. When out on the road, avoid rapid accelerations, which also contribute to needless wear and tear. Even excessive idling can adversely affect the engine, so keep winter warm-ups to around 30 seconds to prevent damage to engine components.
2. Know when and how to fill up. Every driver has likely visited a filling station when an oil tanker is busily filling the tanks. That’s traditionally been considered a lessthan-ideal time to fill up, as the theory is that filling the tanks stirs up sediment that could then find its way into consumers’ gas tanks, adversely affecting their vehicles.
However, that’s often dependent on the station itself and how much its owners prioritize maintenance of the tank and filtration systems. Drivers who trust their local station owners can likely fill up when the tankers are present without worry.
In addition, avoid topping off once the nozzle clicks when filling up. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes
that topping off is harmful to the planet and the vehicle, as gasoline needs room to expand. When you top off, the extra gas may damage the vapor collection system and cause the vehicle to run less efficiently.
3. Change oil more frequently as the vehicle ages. It’s true that modern vehicles no longer require oil changes for every 3,000 miles driven.
However, as vehicles age, drivers and their vehicles’ engines may benefit from more frequent oil changes than the owner’s manual necessarily recommends. Oil changes remove dirt and metal particles from the engine, potentially contributing to a longer life expectancy.
More frequent changes can be especially beneficial for vehicles that are routinely driven in stopand-go traffic.

Connie Nunemaker to present at NELL April 10
BAGLEY — NELL’s spring series continues with Connie Nunemaker presenting “Soil 101: Waking up the Garden” at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, at the Gonvick Community Center, 170 Main St. “Connie will share ways to make sure your spring garden gets a great start, from soil testing, encouraging soil microbes that help provide nutrients for plants, garden cleanup tasks and when to do them,” a release said. “She will share ideas that will help you create a wonderful place to enjoy nature’s color and bounty, and a healthy habitat for pollinators, including native bees and butterflies.”
Nunemaker’s love of nature was developed on childhood vacations where camping and explorations encouraged her scientific leanings, the release said. She majored in biology in college and taught science and art for 21 years. She has applied her biology knowledge in the vegetable and flower gardens around her home, starting her own seeds and dividing perennials and native plants to increase and improve habitat, as well as giving her bounty to share with family and friends, the
release said.
Doors open at 9 a.m. with the program starting at 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served and a free-will donation will be accepted.
100+ Women Who Care event to raise funds for nonprofits
BEMIDJI — 100+ Women Who Care will host a nonprofit fundraising event at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, in the basement of Keg N’ Cork, 310 Beltrami Ave. With a $100 donation, attendees will have the opportunity to nominate a local nonprofit to receive funding.
At the event, four organizations will be selected at random and a representative from the nonprofit will have three to five minutes to pitch their cause and how the funds will be used. Everyone at the event will vote for the best pitch and the winning nonprofit will receive the donations raised, a release said.
“When you donate $100 to a charity, often you wonder if you are making a difference,” explained the release. “But when 100 people donate $100 at the same time, they raise $10,000 to a worthy cause.” Attendees will also get a chance to network while enjoying appetizers and a cash bar. “It takes only an hour,” said the release. “No
additional fundraising, no silent auction donations to solicit, no volunteering. Simply a great way to give back right in our own community.”
Doors open at 5 p.m. Donations can be made in cash or check.
