class set for May 15

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Senior Center, in collaboration with Conservation Minnesota, will host a Renewable Energies class at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, at the senior center, 216 Third St. NW.

This is the final class in an ongoing series, titled “Canvases and Conversation.” In this series, attendees will complete an art project and learn from an educational class regarding some aspect of conservation aligning with the theme of the month, a release said.

The class is free to members and $20 for nonmembers. Space is limited, so registration is required.

Senior Center to host Syttende Mai celebration, concert

BEMIDJI —The Bemidji Senior Center will celebrate Syttende Mai, or Norwegian Constitution Day, and host a Sonja and Jay concert on Friday, May 17, at the senior center, 216 Third St. NW.

During the Syttende Mai celebration from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., attendees can enjoy krumkake, sandbakkels, almond cake and other Norwegian treats. The cost is $5 for three treats and a cup of coffee.

The event’s Norwegian hosts will be dressed in traditional Norwegian clothing, a release said.

The center will host a free spring concert at 1 p.m. featuring Sonja on the cello and Jay on the piano. Refreshments will be available following the concert.

Cancer benefit dinner for Dawn Premo set for May 18

CASS LAKE — A cancer benefit dinner for Dawn Premo will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the Pike Bay Town Hall, 15514 MN-371.

The benefit will include a silent auction, bake sale, fry bread tacos and an ice cream social.

The “Love for Dawn Premo” benefit is being held to help defray medical costs for Premo due to her diagnosis of stage

two lung cancer. She is being treated at Joe Lueken Cancer Center with chemo, radiation and immunotherapy, a release said.

Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter groundbreaking set for May 17

BEMIDJI — After five years of fundraising, the Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter will break ground at noon on Friday, May 17, as construction gets underway on a new shelter at 1215 30th St. NW.

“For more than 46 years, Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter has badly needed a new facility,” a release said. “In 2022, the shelter turned away 553 victims and survivors due to lack of space.”

On May 17, shelter staff, local leaders and community members will celebrate the groundbreaking of the new

shelter. The 10-month construction project, expected to be finished in the spring of 2025, will cost an estimated $4.1 million.

“The new shelter will give families dignity and privacy when they have to flee their home,”

Northwoods Executive Director Christine Latzke said in the release. “It also will provide comforting spaces for families to come and receive help before and after they leave a dangerous home life.”

Designed by DSGW Architects, the new onefloor 7,775-square-foot building will feature eight bedrooms with ensuites, five offices, two intake rooms, a children’s playroom, a meeting room, a therapy room, a laundry room and a kitchen.

To date, Northwoods has raised over $3.8 million toward the shelter. A

sold-out fundraising gala will be held in the evening on May 17 at Hampton Inn and Suites. A waitlist for this event is available by contacting Kari Cooper at kari.cooper91@gmail.com.

Northwoods Battered Women’s Shelter is a domestic violence shelter and advocacy program that provides emergency crisis shelter and advocacy to victims and survivors of intimate partner violence. Advocates are on duty at the shelter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Master Gardeners, Bemidji Garden Club to hold spring plant sale

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Garden Club and the Beltrami County Master Gardeners will hold a spring plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 18, in the 4-H and Extension Building at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds, 7223 Fairgrounds Road NW.

As participating sponsors in the Birds, Bees and Butterflies campaign, the plant sale will showcase and have for sale native and other perennial plants that support monarch butterflies, bees and birds.

There will be a wide variety of sun and shade perennials, native plants, annuals, vegetables, seeds and herbs for sale, all of which have been donated by members of the two organizations, a release said.

Members will be available during the plant sale to assist attendees, answer their flower and vegetable gardening questions and share information on both of the organizations. Information will also be available on various plants participants can purchase at their local greenhouse to support the effort, the release said.

The Master Gardeners and Bemidji Garden Club will use the proceeds from the sale for gardening education and public garden maintenance in Bemidji.

After-school food program available at Boys and Girls Club

BEMIDJI — The Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area is participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program to offer afterschool meals to kids at the club. Free meals will be

provided to all enrolled children. Meals will meet nutritional standards established by the USDA, a release said. Meals will be offered from 2:40 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with select days off. The program will end on May 31, 2024.

Summer Theater Day Camp set for June 3-14

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department and Bemidji Community Theater will hold Summer Theater Day Camp from 1 to 4 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, June 5-16.

During the day camp, participants will be placed in a camp section based on their age, interest and performance experience. Skill sections include basic stagecraft, advanced performance, script-writing, musical theater and tech and set design, a release said.

Community Table offers sit-down meals

BEMIDJI — Mt. Zion and United Methodist Churches of Bemidji offer sit-down Communi ty Table meals on Mon days through Thursdays.

The doors open at 4:40 p.m. with meals being served from 5 to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays at Mt. Zion and Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Methodist Church.

The meals are free and open to the public, every one is welcome.

BEMIDJI — The Beltrami Area Service Collaborative has set its meeting dates for the remainder of the year. All meetings will run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on select Wednesdays and are open to the public.

The Importance of Tick Prevention

How heartbreaking tick disease can be! Who would think that the bite of a tick so tiny that it is often unseen can cause such severe consequences? Over these past weeks I have seen many cases of tick disease that progressed to the point of severe kidney damage. You may ask how can that happen? Some dogs’ immune systems have an excessive response to tick disease, and the delicate structures of the kidneys can be severely damaged. This is most commonly seen with Lyme disease. A recent study showed Lyme infected dogs have a 43% increased risk of kidney disease as they get older. Up to 1-2% of dogs with Lyme infection can develop severe, fatal kidney failure called Lyme nephritis. While Lyme nephritis is statistically rare, I have seen six cases in the past two weeks.

The key to avoiding tick disease is prevention. Not all tick prevention products are created equal. There are numerous topicals, collars and oral tick prevention products. The key to tick products working is how fast they kill the ticks and how long that protection lasts between doses. It is important to discuss with your veterinarian the best tick prevention options for your pet’s lifestyle (i.e. topical, collar or chewable prevention products). Be aware topical tick repellant products often contain permethrin, which can cause neurologic signs in cats if they are exposed to these topical products. The important take home message is to give regular flea, tick and heartworm prevention and plan on giving it year-round now that winters can be warmer. Anytime the temperature rises above 34 degrees there is a chance ticks are out, even if only for a few days. Many of the cases of Lyme and Anaplasmosis I have seen this spring were likely exposures back at the end of December or early January. The days of being able to stop tick prevention in November and start up again in February are past. Ticks are turning into a year-round threat. The cost of prevention is small compared to the cost of tick disease infection, both financially and emotionally.
