The kit includes one bag, two activity packets, 10 colored pencils, two CD Saturn crafts, two UV light handprint crafts, two constellation crafts and two phases of the moon with Oreos. Chroma Art Camp set for June 3-7

BEMIDJI — Registra-

tion is now open for Headwaters Kawaii Chroma Art Camp program, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on June 3-7, at Headwaters Music and Arts, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.

This camp for kids ages 7-12 will explore the enchanting Japanese kawaii art style within the captivating realm of color theory.

Camp instructor and artist Shannon Stormy Reyes will lead campers into a world of vibrant imagination and artistic expression through the fundamentals of kawaii design, helping them bring their own cute and expressive characters to life on paper, a release said. Through hands-on activities, games and projects,

campers will experiment with the power of color, learning to convey feelings and moods in their artwork.

During Kawaii Character Design Workshops, campers will learn the intricacies of crafting lovable and charming kawaii characters through stepby-step guidance from experienced artists.

In Color Theory Explorations, participants will unravel the secrets of color theory, discover how different hues and shades can evoke a spectrum of emotions and experiment with various color combinations to create visually stunning and emotionally resonant artwork, the release said.

The camp will conclude with a showcase where campers will display their artwork, celebrating their newfound skills and friendships.

The cost to attend is $140 per participant, including a $40 nonrefundable deposit. Space is limited so advance registration is required.

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Public Library will host The Skally Line on its regional spring tour at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the library, 509 America Ave.

“Named after the old rail line connecting Duluth with the Twin Cities, The Skally Line steams its way around the curves and bends of early American music: string band blues, Appalachian ballads, fiddle tunes, early country and bluegrass and

Tin Pan Alley music,” a release said. “Along the way, they tell forgotten stories about old Minnesota, play original music rooted in that history and have a rip-roaring good time.”

Comprised of musicians Fred Keller and Bill Cagley, The Skally Line is a band dedicated to creating an experience through old-time music and song with a focus on Minnesota history and story.

This event is free and open to the public.

Cancer benefit dinner for Dawn Premo set for May 18

CASS LAKE — A cancer benefit dinner for Dawn Premo will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the Pike Bay Town Hall, 15514 MN-371. The benefit will include a silent auction, bake sale, fry bread tacos and an ice cream social. The “Love for Dawn Premo” benefit is being held to help defray medical costs for Premo due to her diagnosis of stage two lung cancer. She is being treated at Joe Lueken Cancer Center with chemo, radiation and immunotherapy, a release said.

Master Gardeners, Bemidji Garden Club to hold spring plant sale

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Garden Club and the Beltrami County Master Gardeners will hold a spring plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 18, in the 4-H and Extension Building at the Beltrami County Fairgrounds, 7223 Fairgrounds Road NW.

As participating sponsors in the Birds, Bees and Butterflies campaign, the plant sale will showcase and have for sale native and other perennial plants that support monarch butterflies, bees and birds.

There will be a wide variety of sun and shade perennials, native plants, annuals, vegetables, seeds and herbs for sale, all of which have been donated by members of the two organizations, a release said.

Members will be available during the plant sale to assist attendees, answer their flower and vegetable gardening questions and share information on both of the organizations. Information will also be available on various plants participants can purchase at their local greenhouse to support the effort, the release said.

The Master Gardeners and Bemidji Garden Club will use the proceeds from the sale for gardening education and public garden maintenance in Bemidji.

Four Pines Bookstore to host Minnesota authors May 19

BEMIDJI — Four Pines Bookstore will host Minnesota authors Jess Lourey, Kristi Belcamino and Sarah Stonich at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, at the bookstore, 102 Third St. NW.

The three authors will discuss books, writing and more. Attendees can participate in a questionand-answer session with the authors and a book signing.

Lourey’s newly revised novel, “May Day,” tells the story of a waitress turned librarian turned investigator after she finds her new lover murdered, a release said.

“’May Day’ is a laughout-loud cozy mystery set in Battle Lake, Minn.,”

Four Pines employee Rachel Harris said in the release. “It is the perfect read to kick off the summer.”

Lourey is a bestselling author who writes about small-town secrets. She has won and been nominated for various awards.

Stonich writes contemporary fiction and is most known for her novel, “Fishing.” Belcamino is a USA Today Bestseller who writes dark

mysteries about strong women seeking justice, the release said.

Contra dance set for May 18 at Rail River Folk School

BEMIDJI — Bemidji Contra Dance will host a community contra dance

at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at Rail River Folk School, 303 Railroad St. SW.

Contra dancing is a lively, traditional social dance that originated in New England and is now done all over the United States, a release said. The community is invited to dance to live music by the O’Neil Family Band of East Grand Forks, with calling by Wendy Greenburg.

Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society to hold summer events

BEMIDJI — The Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society will host a Boreal Book Club, Plein Air Painting class and a Mindful Yoga series this summer, at the Neilson Spearhead Center nature preserve, 48851 County 29.

Boreal Book Club will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 19. This month’s book is “Wilding” by Isabella Tree. These monthly meetings, held the second to last Sunday of each month from May to October, will begin with a short hike followed by a discussion of the book of the month.

Books are selected with the goal of including Minnesota-specific topics, Indigenous voices, memoirs, humor and adventure, and information about the natural world that provokes awe and a closer connection to the earth, a release said.

The cost is $5 per month or $30 for the whole season.

Plein Air Painting:

Capturing the Northwoods Landscape will be held from noon to 2 p.m. on May 25, June 15 and Aug. 10. Instructor Gillian Bedford will lead participants in techniques for painting outside, using acrylics to capture the landscape. Bedford’s approach as a teacher is to offer simple techniques as tools and to encourage her students to find their own artistic voice, the release said.

Attendees should bring several sheets of watercolor paper, a water bottle and a folding stool or chair if needed. Paint and palette, brushes, paper towels, clipboards and tape will be available.

The cost is $30 per class or $90 for the series.

Mindful Yoga: Stretch and Flow will be

held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, led by instructor Ann Gorman. These monthly classes, held the last Tuesday of each month from April through September, invite participants to engage their senses and relax in their practice while taking in the sights, sounds and smells of nature, the release said. Participants are asked to dress in comfortable layers suited to the outside temperature the day of class and bring a water bottle. Yoga mats will be available or you can bring your own.

Weather permitting, classes will be held outdoors. The cost is $15 per class or $75 for the series.

David and Rivka Costello to speak at Hope Temple Messianic Fellowship

BEMIDJI — Hope Temple Messianic Fellowship will host David and Rivka Costello at its service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 19, at 3117 15th St. NW.

The couple are visiting from the Chicago area, a release said. David is the lead teacher at Ahavas Chinam Synagogue and Rivka teaches women’s studies online. Their lesson will range from basic bible teachings to a more chasidic understanding of the book of Matthew, the release said. The service will begin at 10 a.m. and finish around 6 p.m. with lunch and dinner breaks.

BAAE announces 2024 grant and scholarship opportunities

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Area Arts Endowment recently announced its

2024 grant and scholarship opportunities.

Schools, nonprofit groups or arts organizations in the Bemidji area may request a grant of up to $1,500 from the BAAE Arts Project Grant Fund to produce an arts event, put on a workshop, develop an arts organization, sponsor touring arts events or sponsor an artist in residence among other activities.

Applicants that are not schools or nonprofit organizations must use a fiscal agent.

A scholarship opportunity from the Everett Wilimek Endowment for Orchestral String Studies is also open for Bemidji area youth ages 8-15 to study violin, viola, cello or bass. Scholarship funds can be used to cover lesson costs, training, instrumental rental and more, a release said.

Applications can be found online at www. nwmf.org under “Open Grant Rounds.” Printed applications will not be available this year.

The application deadline for the Arts Project Grant Fund and Everett Wilimek Endowment is May 31.

A component fund of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation, the grant and scholarship program supports the mission of the BAAE, which is to “create a community in which the arts flourish and enhance our lives.”

Grants to be awarded through the BAAE Arts Project grant round are made possible through BAAE and the following funds: Patt and Ernie Rall Children’s Performing Arts Fund, the Sandy Kaul Fund for the Arts Fund, the Frederick Marshall Fund and the John Rabel Memorial Music Fund.

Jason-Aeric Huenecke to present ‘Unity in Polarity’ May 19

BEMIDJI — The Headwaters Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will host Jason-Aeric Huenecke’s presentation “Unity in Plurality” at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 19, at Headwaters Peace Center, 1826 Mikrantip Road SW.

The owners of Mustang Sally BBQ in Marshall, Minn., will teach attendees how to barbecue like a pro this summer.

”Last year the couple shared about their 17-year journey on the professional BBQ circuit,” a release said. “In this program, the duo

will demonstrate how to prepare meat for the smoker while meats are smoking, followed by a tasting.”

They will be smoking beef brisket, pork butt, St. Louis style ribs and serving Blooming Bologna. There will also be cole slaw and rolls to go along with the meat tasting.

Emergency food and shelter grant applications available BEMIDJI — The United Way of Bemidji Area is now accepting applications for emergency food and shelter funding for Beltrami County agencies through 5 p.m. on Friday, May 24.

The federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program is providing $20,567 for agencies serving Beltrami County residents with emergency food and shelter needs backdated to Oct. 1, 2022, and new needs through Dec 31, 2024.

In each funded jurisdiction, a local board advertises the availability of the funds, establishes local priorities, selects local nonprofit and government agencies to receive supplemental funding and monitors program compliance, a release said.

The EFS Program has been in existence since 1983 and was authorized under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act of 1987. EFS Program funds are used to supplement already existing food, shelter, rent, mortgage and utility assistance programs with nondisaster-related needs. After-school food program available at Boys and Girls Club

BEMIDJI — The Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area is participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program to offer afterschool meals to kids at the club.

Free meals will be provided to all enrolled children. Meals will meet nutritional standards established by the USDA, a release said.

Meals will be offered from 2:40 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with select days off. The program will end on May 31, 2024.

Trinity Lutheran in Lake George to hold Memorial Day service

Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake George will host a special Memorial Day service at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 27, at the church, 37115 U.S. Highway 71.

The service will include displays of military uniforms and memorabilia, photos of honored veterans, and songs and hymns. Bemidji VFW Post 1260 will host military honors.

The guest speaker will be Ike Eickhoff, a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran. Eickhoff will share his story about his experience with faith and life in a warzone, a release said.

Refreshments will be served following the service. All are welcome.

Bemidji Area Community Band to hold rehearsals

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Area Community Band will begin rehearsing for its 2024 summer concert series at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, in the band room at Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.

New members are welcome to attend, a release said. The band will perform four concerts this summer, on June 16, June 30, July 21 and Aug. 4. Concerts will be held on the lawn south of Bangsberg Hall.

Attendees of the concerts are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. In case of inclement weather, concerts are moved indoors at Bangsberg.

There is no charge for the concerts, but free-will donations will be accepted.

Pet Fixers clinics scheduled for June 1-2

BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host low-cost spay and neuter clinics through its Pet Fixers program this year.

Qualified pet owners and caretakers can get their pets spayed or neutered and receive other low-cost preventative care services, including vaccinations and microchips, at an upcoming weekend clinic, a release said.

Clinics are typically held once per month at Great River Rescue, located at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE.

Dates for this year’s clinics are:

• June 1 and 2

July 13 and 14

Aug. 10 and 11

Sept. 7 and 8

• Oct. 5 and 6

• Nov. 2 and 3

Registration for each clinic opens on the first of the month prior to the scheduled clinic. Income qualifications along with all available services and prices can be found on the Pet Fixers page of the Great River Rescue website.

Neen’s Future Space Scholarship applications open

BEMIDJI — The Neen’s Future in Space Scholarship, a component fund of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation, is seeking qualified applicants to apply for the 2024 scholarship round.

The annual scholarship is dedicated to qualified students who have graduated within northwest Minnesota, and who are pursuing their junior or senior year in post-secondary education or postgraduate study through a college, university, or other accredited non-profit technical or vocational education/training institution or program.

Eligibility requirements:

The student must have graduated from a school district within the NMF service area, which includes Red Lake and White Earth Nations and Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau Counties.

The student must intend to enter their junior or senior year or post-graduate program, majoring in the study of science, math, technology or engineering with the preference for entering a career in astrophysics, aeronautical engineering or aerospace. Financial need will be considered in awarding the scholarship but is not an eligibility requirement.

• The student will have a minimum of a “B” or its equivalent, grade point average, and demonstrate a willingness to earn a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.

Aaron Lewis to perform at Sanford Center in Bemidji June 30

BEMIDJI — The Sanford Center will host “Aaron Lewis: The American Patriot Tour” at 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, at the Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE.

”Aaron Lewis, the Vermont-born powerhouse, first found success with Staind – the 2000s-era hard rockers who injected meditative muscle into an era better known for mindless aggression,” a release said. “But while that band is still very much alive, it was never enough to satisfy Lewis’ creative drive.”

As a solo artist, Lewis has had two albums reach number one on the Billboard Country Album Debut charts: “Town Line” and “Sinner.” His song “Country Boy,” with George Jones and Charlie Daniels, went platinum and “Am I the Only One” was a gold-certified Billboard number-one hit. BEMIDJI — Bagpiper John Egelhof will hold beginner bagpipe interest group meetings from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, at First Lutheran Church, 900 Bemidji Ave. N. Attendees should be interested in Celtic/Gaelic bagpipe music and learning this storied instrument, a release said. Participants must have a hand size sufficient to cover the holes on a practice instrument, called a practice chanter. Attendees must obtain a practice chanter and tutor book to begin learning. Comedian Charlie Berens returns to Bemidji Oct. 5

BEMIDJI — Comedian, New York Times bestselling author, Emmywinning journalist, musician and creator of the Manitowoc Minute Charlie Berens is bringing his Midwest-focused sketch comedy back to Bemidji at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE. Berens has since been featured on Comedy Central, Fox, Funny or Die, TBS and more. His comedic mashups, including “If Jack Dawson Was Really from Wisconsin,” have garnered more than 16 million views. In 2017, the Wisconsin native began the viral Midwest comedic news series Manitowoc Minute. His fans flock daily to his Facebook page to view his content. He currently has over 2.6

million Facebook followers. After garnering millions of views, he’s toured the United States selling out venues within minutes.

In 2020, Barens paired up with Horseshoes and Hand Grenades alum Adam Greul to release the music/comedy album, “Unthawed.” The album, which is a mixture of bluegrass, country and Charlie’s comedy, hit number one on the Billboard Bluegrass chart and number six on the Bluegrass Comedy chart.

His first book, “The Midwest Survival Guide,” was released in November 2021 and immediately became a New York Times Best Seller, the release said. woods Habitat for Humanity is offering “A Brush With Kindness” tree care services for qualified low-income homeowners in Beltrami and Clearwater Counties. According to a release, applicants must be less than 60% of the median income for Beltrami and Clearwater Counties as well as meet other qualifications outlined on the application.

“Since the storm of 2012, we have continued to hear from homeowners that the cost of removing and replacing damaged and dead trees is far beyond what they can afford,” Executive Director Geri Hickerson said in the release.

The Serving Community Forests by Assisting Low-Income Homeowners Program provides assistance for:

• Removal of damaged/ fallen/dead trees. Replacement of trees.

Additionally, areas with more trees have reduced rates of respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease and childhood asthma rates (US Environmental Protection Agency).”

The program is made possible through grant funding from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the USDA Forest Services and the Northwest Minnesota Foundation.

NMF seeks applicants for Training and Education Fund

BEMIDJI — The Northwest Minnesota Foundation is seeking funding proposals for its Training and Education Fund to provide financial support to nonprofit organizations and leaders in northwest Minnesota. Preference will be given to efforts that build leadership knowledge, skills and capacity, a release said.

Eligible expenses may include staff and board training; travel and conferences; consultant hiring; strategic planning;

leadership training; diversity, equity and inclusion training; organizational or systems audits or other efforts that help make nonprofits more efficient and viable for the long term.

Eligible applicants are nonprofits, public agencies and tribal organizations located within the Northwest Minnesota Foundation service area that includes Red Lake and White Earth Nations along with Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the

Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake Falls and Roseau Counties. Grant applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. The maximum grant award is $2,500.
