Northwest Minnesota Foundation seeks applicants for its board of directors

BEMIDJI

— The Northwest Minnesota Foundation is now accepting applications from those interested in serving on its board of directors.

The NMF board is looking to elect new members this winter, with newly elected directors starting their four-year terms in December or January, a release said.

“The Foundation invests resources, facilitates collaboration and promotes philanthropy to make the region a better place to live and work,” the release said. “The vision of the foundation is that Northwest Minnesota will be a place where communities and people work together to foster opportunity, promote philanthropy and enrich the lives of all residents.”

The NMF Board of Directors is made up of 12 adults who live within the 12-county region, which includes Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman,

Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau Counties, and Red Lake and White Earth Nations.

NMF encourages applications from all who may be interested from throughout the region.

NMF is particularly encouraging people from the following groups to apply:

• Those representing Red Lake Nation and the counties of Lake of the Woods, Norman, Beltrami and Marshall.

• Indigenous people, people of color, immigrants/ new Americans, LGBTQ people, low-income people or younger ages.

People working in the following sectors: banking/finance, health care, manufacturing, nonprofit, low-income serving, arts, early childhood, legal, elder care or housing.

Applications will be accepted until Monday, Sept. 30.

BEMIDJI — A “Jammin’ with Jen” meet-andgreet event with Minnesota Congressional District 8 candidate Jen Schultz will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Diamond Point Park, 1700 Birchmont Drive NE.

At the event, attendees can meet Schultz, ask questions and learn more about her vision for our community.

St. Bartholomew’s to hold fall rummage, bake sale

BEMIDJI — St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church will host a fall rummage and bake sale from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the church, 1800 Irvine Ave. NW.

Lunch will be available. Items for sale will include housewares, furniture, small appliances, a baby stroller, many kid toys, jewelry, artwork, games, shoes and boots, clothing, bedding, dog crates and more, a release said.

First City Squares to offer square dancing lessons

BEMIDJI — The First City Squares will be offering square dance lessons from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 7 and 14, at United Methodist Church, 924 Beltrami Ave. NW.

The caller will be Charley Huhtala and lunch will be served. Partners are not required. Participants should wear casual attire and comfortable shoes, a release said.

“Ages 8 to 98 are invited to come for fun, fitness and friends,” added the release.

The cost per session is $5 per person or $20 per family.

set to meet Sept. 7

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Area Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship of America chapter is set to meet at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, in the Beltrami Electric Conference Room, 4111 Technology Drive NW.

A light breakfast will be served and all are welcome to attend.

The keynote speaker will be Sen. Steve Green.

Green’s testimony will describe the Lord’s presence in St. Paul, including the pastors and lay people regularly visiting Minnesota legislators. Green was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2012, where he served for 10 years. He was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2022 and is currently in his first four-year term.

He has been a Christian for 34 years and married to his wife Cindy for 45 years. They have six children and 15 grandchildren.

Pet Fixers clinics scheduled for Sept. 7-8

BEMIDJI — Great River Rescue will host low-cost spay and neuter clinics through its Pet Fixers program this year. The next clinics are scheduled for Sept. 7 and 8. Qualified pet owners

and caretakers can get their pets spayed or neutered and receive other low-cost preventative care services, including vaccinations and microchips, at an upcoming weekend clinic, a release said. Clinics are typically held once per month at Great River Rescue, located at 1612 Carr Lake Road SE. Remaining dates for this year’s clinics are: Oct. 5 and 6 Nov. 2 and 3

Registration for each clinic opens on the first of the month prior to the scheduled clinic. Income qualifications along with all available services and prices can be found on the Pet Fixers page of the Great River Rescue website.

A $40 deposit per animal is required at the time of registration to secure a spot. Those unable to access the website can call (218) 760-1307

to get help with registration. Additional dates and opportunities may be added. Check the Great River Rescue website and Facebook page for additional opportunity announcements. Approximately 70 to 80 pets are spayed or neutered at each weekend clinic, the release said. St. John’s Catholic Church to host annual roast beef dinner

NEBISH — St. John’s Catholic Church will host its annual roast beef dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the church, 27867 Irvine Ave.

N. in Nebish. The cost of the dinner is $15 for adults, $5 for ages 6 to 12 and free for 5 and younger. There will also be a craft and bake sale.

National Grandparents Day open house set at Clearwater County History Center

SHEVLIN — The Clearwater County Historical Society will observe National Grandparents Day with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the history center, 264 First St.

National Grandparents Day started in 1978 when President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation making the Sunday after Labor Day “National Grandparents Day.”

According to a release, September was chosen for the holiday to signify the “autumn years.” Its purpose is to honor grandparents, give

grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children and to help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.

“The Clearwater County Historical Society encourages grandparents to bring their grandchildren to the museum and share their memories with them,” the release said. “Not a grandparent yet? Bring your grandparent or an older person to enjoy the museum.”

Admission is free. Root beer floats and other refreshments will be served.

Little Sprouts Nature Exploration program starts Sept. 7

BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will offer a Little Sprouts Nature Exploration program from 10 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 or Oct. 5, at North Country Park, 1001 30th St. NW.

This is a preschool program all about nature exploration, a release said. Parents or guardians are required to stay during the event.

48th North Country Arts and Crafts Workshop

BEMIDJI — The North Country Arts and Crafts Board of Directors invite people of all abilities and to the 48th year of the North Country Arts & Crafts Workshop.

The three-day workshop consists of 30 high quality art and craft classes taught by local and regional artists. Participants can register for one, two or three days of classes and gourmet food.

The North Country Arts and Crafts Workshop will take place from Sept. 10-12 at the scenic Lesnoe Ozero Russian Village, northeast of Bemidji on the north side of Turtle River Lake. Lodging is

also available. Classes offered this year include weaving, wood carving, watercolor and acrylic painting, mosaics, sewing, kolrosing, basket making and more.

Bagley Farmers Market open every Friday

BAGLEY — The Bagley Area Farmers Market is open from 3 to 6 p.m. each Friday through September and is located at the grassy lot next to Gali Furniture, one block south of the stoplights. Customers can find a wide variety of fresh

There are also several vendors who accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers as part of the WIC program, which can be used on fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Blackduck Senior Center to host coffee and cards this summer

Child care grants available from NMF

BEMIDJI — The Northwest Minnesota Foundation is seeking grant applications from agencies and organizations in support of early childhood educational programming.

Applicants must be a public entity, tribal nation, community service agency or 501(c)(3) organization having experience in the operation of, planning for, financing of, advocacy for and/or advancement of the delivery of child care services. Applicants must serve populations in the following: Red Lake or White Earth Nation, or the 12 counties of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau.

Grant funding can be used for training and technology needs, child care business start-up and expansion, facility modifications or improvements required for licensing or assistance with licensing and other regulatory requirements, a release said.

Proposals are due by 5 p.m. on Sept. 16.

HCLL announces fall series continues PARK RAPIDS — Headwaters Center for Lifelong Learning program series continues with each event taking place at 1 p.m. at the Event Room, 1104 Park Ave. S in Park Rapids. Here are the remaining events for the season:

Sept. 10: “A Personal Story of My Aunt, Elizabeth Sudmeier, one of the First Female Spies in the CIA.” Ginny Benson will recount tales of female spies in World War II and discuss why it took so long for women to be included in espionage and the unique talents that female spies possess.

Sept. 17: “Evergreen Home” with Kathy Thompson will describe the day-to-day life of Hubbard County homesteaders in the late nineteenth century, including the challenges they faced and the local impacts they left.

Sept. 24: “Artificial Intelligence Explained.” Participants will learn what AI is, how it can be used in positive and productive ways and what its dangers are.

Oct. 3: Phyllis Root will present, “Where is the Lost Forest?” Attendees will learn about the impact of old growth forests and how the Lost

Oct. 8: “Three Old Guys Snowmobile to Alaska.” Rob Hallstrom, a Menahga native, will share stories from a oncein-a-lifetime adventure, including memorable events and how the guys decided to make the trip.

Oct. 18: “The Twelve Owls of Minnesota.” Eben Spencer of Itasca County will present on owl spotting techniques, local owl species and his mounted owls. Spencer has federal and state permits to possess mounted owls, and will bring four mounted owls to this program for viewing.

Oct. 22: “The Making of RISING.” Artist and teacher Tiffany Besonen will share her 10-minute experimental art film “RISING,” discuss her filmmaking process and answer questions.

All programs are held free of charge and wheelchair accessible.

Headwaters Shrine Club to sponsor orthopedic screening event Sept. 13

BEMIDJI — The Headwaters Shrine Club of Bemidji will sponsor an orthopedic screening clinic for children from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 13, at the Sanford Bemidji Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Clinic, 1300 Anne St. NW.

Shrine Healthcare Medical personnel will examine all prospective patients who attend the screening and will provide information about Shriners Healthcare for Children. Children will be evaluated to see if their bone, muscle or joint problem is a treatable condition at Shriners Children’s Twin Cities, a release said.

Conditions that may require an orthopedic specialist include in-toeing; toe walking; flat feet; bowed legs or knocked knees; sore, painful or stiff joints; limb deficiency; limb length discrepancy; curved spine indicating possible scoliosis; and club feet.

No medical procedures are performed at this clinic; it is for examination only. If a child requires follow-up care at the clinic, complimentary transportation may be available through the local Shrine Center upon request, the release said.

Irish pianist John O’Connor to perform recitals Sept. 13-14

BEMIDJI — Irish

pianist John O’Connor

will give two performances at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 and 14 in Thompson Recital Hall at Bemidji State University’s Bangsberg Hall.

On Friday, Sept. 13, O’Connor will perform a solo concert featuring works by Haydn, Schubert, Field, Scriabin and Beethoven.

The following night, O’Connor will be joined by BSU Assistant Professor of Music and violinist Eric Olson. The duo’s recital will feature works by Beethoven and Brahms. Tickets are available at the door and cost $20 for general admission, $15 for

seniors and free for K-12 and college students with student ID.

“O’Connor is regarded as one of the most

important piano teachers in the world today,” a release said. He is a Distinguished Artist in Residence, professor of music and chair of the Piano Division at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia, professor of piano at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Distinguished Visiting Artist at the TU Dublin Conservatoire of Music and visiting professor at Showa University in Japan.

O’Connor has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and first gained widespread attention in the USA in 1986 with the release of his first volume of Beethoven Sonatas on the Telarc label, added the release.

Eric Olson teaches violin and viola at BSU and serves as coordinator of the String Area, Director of the Bemidji Chamber Orchestra, coordinator of

Scholarship/Recruitment and director of New Graduate Music Programming. He also owns and operates the Olson Violin Studio, serves as Executive Director and member of the First Violin section for the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra and is the Concertmaster of the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra. NELL to host Curtis and Loretta concert

BEMIDJI — Northern Exposure to Lifelong Learning will host Curtis and Loretta in concert at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the McIntosh Community Center, 115 Broadway NW.

The duo will perform two 45-minute sets with a short intermission in between.

Curtis and Loretta live in northeast Minneapolis, and travel all over the U.S., taking their unique brand of old-time and folk music to festivals, listening rooms, concert halls, retirement homes and more. But they also

love getting out to the greater Minnesota area and making connections with audiences in those areas, a release said.

Thanks to a Minnesota State Arts Board Creative Individuals grant, the couple has been touring throughout greater Minnesota this year, performing outreach concerts in eight small communities.

“Curtis and Loretta look forward to spending time with our audience members after the concert, answering questions, hearing folks’ personal stories and learning more about the area,” the release said.

There is no charge to attend this concert.

John Vincent and Pat Kimbinski to perform at Blackduck Senior Center

BLACKDUCK — The Blackduck Senior Center will host a music event featuring John Vincent and Pat Kimbinski from

3-5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the senior center, 24 First St. SE.

“Feel free to kick up your heels ... or just listen to some great music,” a release said.

Vincent and Kimbinski play good old-fashioned music, consisting of oldtime country, old-time fiddle and accordion tunes. A free-will donation will be accepted.

There will be a potluck dinner following the event at 5 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share. Everyone is welcome.

Miss Northern Lakes scholarship pageant seeks contestants

BEMIDJI — The Miss Northern Lakes scholarship pageant is seeking female contestants ages 14-17 and 18-26, for the competition on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The deadline to register is Sept. 5. The venue will be determined after the registration deadline.

The competition will consist of a private interview, onstage question, talent, health and fitness, and evening gown portion, a release said. The winner of the Miss Northern Lakes title will receive a scholarship.

The winners of both the teen and miss categories will advance to the state competition to represent the community and have the chance to win more scholarships, become Miss Minnesota and advance to the Miss America pageant.

Comedian Charlie Berens returns to Bemidji Oct. 5

BEMIDJI — Comedian, New York Times bestselling author, Emmywinning journalist, musician and creator of the Manitowoc Minute Charlie Berens is bringing his Midwest-focused sketch comedy back to Bemidji at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Sanford Center, 1111 Event Center Drive NE. Berens was last in Bemidji at the Sanford Center in November 2022, where he performed to a sold-out crowd with his humor and uniquely hilarious Midwest comedy, a release said. He began his career working for MTV News’ Choose or Lose. In 2012,

Tribune Media tapped him to host the comedic news show Nightcap. In 2013, he won an Emmy for “The Cost of Water” while reporting for KDAF, a television station in Dallas, Texas.

Berens has since been featured on Comedy Central, Fox, Funny or Die, TBS and more. His comedic mashups, including “If Jack Dawson Was Really from Wisconsin,” have garnered more than 16 million views. In 2017, the Wisconsin native began the viral Midwest comedic news series Manitowoc Minute. His fans flock daily to his Facebook page to
