Strengthening Our Fellowship, Serving Our Flock; Sharing Our Faith And Securing Our Future 1
Episcopal Greetings “Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own,
because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14 Dear Beloved:
GOD is calling us to a challenging, yet exciting journey to reach our fullest potential. Apathy and mediocrity are unacceptable! While there are many amazing things happening across the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal District, there’s so much more that the Lord has for us. Let us refuse to become complacent or content with the status quo. Our mandate is to equip leaders who are bold in seeking new ways to grow in Christ and to reach the unchurched by sharing in powerful and authentic ways the Good News of Jesus, our Lord and Liberator. This year, we focus on the theme: “The Freedom Church: Reaching Our Potential.” I have repeatedly reminded you that; “Leaders are learners” and with that in mind, we come together to engage, receive, and dialogue with dynamic leaders who are committed to your growth as a leader and who possess the anointing, the training, and the experience that will be transformative for each of us. Yes, attend the powerful teaching sessions, encounter the Holy Spirit in our worship services, be enriched through the fellowship, but be determined to leave here with a fresh commitment to lead your congregation or your lay ministry to reach their GOD-gifted potential. Please join us in expressing gratitude to our very capable Dean, Rev. Dr. Evalina Huggins, to the MAED Presiding Elders, and the incredible LTI Planning Team who have worked tirelessly to ensure that we will leave this experience better equipped to be impactful leaders who nurture impactful believers. They have prepared a powerful program consistent with our theme and grounded in our core mission - The Great Commission. My wife and I enthusiastically welcome you to expect the unexpected and celebrate Christ together this week. May you be equipped for greater leadership and may your passion for Jesus and His church be reignited as we respond to Christ’s call to reach our potential.
“Zion is calling me to a higher place of praise; To stand upon the mountain and to magnify His name. To tell all the people of every nation that He reigns. Zion is calling me to a higher place of praise.”
Blessings and Love Always! Your Episcopal Servants, Bishop and Mrs. W. Darin Moore October 17, 2019 2 THE FREEDOM CHURCH: A Movement Empowered By The Holy Spirit;
BISHOP VASHTI MURPHY MCKENZIE Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie serves as the 117th elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Her historic election in the year 2000 represents the first time in the over 200-year history of the AME Church, a woman had obtained the level of Episcopal office. The firsts continue as she served as the first woman President of the Council of Bishops, Chair of the General Conference Commission and was the first woman Host Bishop for the 49th Session of the General Conference of the AME Church in June 2012, with more than 30,000 in attendance. Her husband, Dr. Stanley McKenzie serves with her as Episcopal Supervisor. Currently, she is honored to serve as the presiding prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, where she provides leadership to all of the AME Churches in the entire state of Texas. She exercises ministry and administrative responsibilities for over 200 churches. This includes Paul Quinn College, a 140 year-old liberal arts historically black college where she serves as the vice-chairwoman. In the past four years, $8.5 millions dollars have been contributed from philanthropic donors to undergird the Work College Program, We Over Me Farm and a new dormitory. She is also the founder and chair of 10th Future Inc., a 501c3 non-profit that gives scholarships to students and grants for local church and community service projects. The 10th Future Inc. Annual Golf Tournament has raised over $200,000 for special projects in Texas. Bishop McKenzie was appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the inaugural President’s Advisory Council of the White House Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. She recently was invited to preach at the annual White House Easter Prayer Breakfast at the invitation of President Obama. Bishop McKenzie is the author of five books. The first two, Not Without A Struggle and Strength in the Struggle are concerned with leadership and professional growth for women. Journey to the Well helps women seek new directions for personal growth and transformation following the footsteps of the Biblical Samaritan woman. Her book, Swapping Housewives, tells the stories of Rachel, Jacob and Leah and shares the 21st century implications for married and unmarried love. A revised updated version of Not Without A Struggle was released in 2012. In 2013 her newest book Those Sisters Can Preach! was released. It includes 22 sermons as pearls of wisdom from nationally known preachers who happen to be women. Bishop McKenzie, well known as an electrifying preacher, has been honored for her leadership, community service, and outstanding achievements by a number of diverse civic, educational, business, and governmental organizations and leaders. She was named in 2015 by Huffington Post as one of the 50 most powerful women religious leaders in the world.

WORKSHOP SYLLABI
Workshop Title: Clearing Church Clutter: Retaining, Retrieving, Recycling and Rejecting Date: Thursday, October 15, 2020 Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Location: Virtual Room to be assigned later Instructor: Rev. Alyce Walker Johnson Instructors E-mail address: camezpastor@gmail.com Preliminary Description: This workshop is designed to help local church leaders understand the forces driving change in the local church, adopt criteria for assessing local church ministry effectiveness and embrace a meaningful approach to affirm their own church’s MOST essential ministry components. Rationale: The continued decline in church attendance and membership in mainline Protestant churches along with recent events (a global public health crisis, a severe economic downturn, cries for justice and police accountability and the looming presidential election) continue to challenge local churches to rethink what it means to be the church. As we contemplate a return to “brick and mortar,” we know that we cannot simply go back to what we were doing prior to March 2020. Every congregation will do well to assess every aspect of its preCOVID-19 ministry and ask some tough questions. As we do so, we will inevitably have activities and programs that we will RETAIN, some we will need to REVIVE, others that will need to be REWORKED and finally, those who we must RETIRE!
…For the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head —Christ—from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Cheek Instructor's Email address: Healthel7@hotmail.com Location: Virtual room TBA Course Overview: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the world three fold, physically, mentally and spiritually. Black lives have been impacted more than any other ethnic group with not only the effects of the COVID pandemic economically and socially but also the increase of racial insensitivity and injustices by abusive law enforcement practices and a biased judicial system that seeks to protect law enforcement over and above Black citizens. This workshop shall address the importance of Black lives mattering to Black people while striving to be healthy physically, mentally and spiritually. Course Objective: The workshop shall explore how the medical and pharmaceutical industries within the United States historically has been extremely negligent regarding the health care of Black Americans as identified in the horrendous Tuskegee Experiment and the benefits of how healthy eating and proper exercises can heal and strengthen Black lives. The workshop shall also explore the psychological impact of the infamous Willie Lynch experiment and how the tactics suggested in this document has mentally impacted Black Americans interpersonally and relationally and how therapy and counseling can bring healing to many of these maladies. The workshop shall finally explore the impact of popular culture on the spirit of Black Americans and some suggested means that can help renew, fortify and sustain the spirit of Black Americans. WORKSHOP SYLLABI
Workshop Title: Sheep Make Sheep: Strengthening Our Fellowship by Feeding His Sheep Date: Saturday, October 17, 2020 Time: 10:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Instructor: Katherine Burrell Instructor’s email address: katherineburrell@yahoo.com Scripture: John 21:15-17
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” Focus: Through an interactive presentation, we will show that by feeding His Sheep, we are not only “Fellowshipping” with each other but we are, more importantly, also serving others through evangelism. Even as Laity, “our calling or vocation is to witness in Word, deed and presence to the tidings of salvation,” for we are called to reach out for others to “Come with Us to Christ.” Goal and learning objective for the course:
To show how fellowshipping is not just a social construct but a spiritual tool for evangelism To give the laity new insights into their role in making disciples for church growth and development Supplemental Reading Bibliography The Holy Bible Logan, James C.
