WHAT WE RECOMMEND BOOKS, DVDS & MAGAZINES

YA ROMANCE HORROR SCI-FI

Dungeons and Drama

Kristy Boyce

This young adult novel mixes tabletop role-playing with high school drama. Friends use their game characters to tackle real-life issues, exploring identity and camaraderie. The game mirrors their personal growth and the intricate dynamics of teenage life, offering a creative escape and a metaphor for their struggles with identity, friendship, and the challenges of fitting into the complex social hierarchy of high school.

The Green Mile Stephen King

This novel is a profound blend of mystery and supernatural elements set in a 1930s prison. It centres on the story of a death row supervisor who encounters an inmate with a mysterious, miraculous ability, leading to deep reflections on justice and human nature.

Station Eleven Emily St John Mandel

This post-apocalyptic novel weaves survivors' stories after a devastating flu wipes out most of humanity. Through interconnected narratives, it explores themes of memory, loss, and resilience, highlighting the enduring power of art and human connections in a shattered world.

DonateLife Week

DonateLife Week is the national awareness raising week for organ and tissue donation.

Organ, eye and tissue donation saves lives, restores health and improves the quality of life for thousands of Australians each year. But did you know that only 2% of people who die in hospital each year can be considered for organ donation? One organ donor can save the lives of up to 7 people and help many more through eye and tissue donation.

People can also become Living Donors, donating bone marrow or part of their kidney, usually to a friend or family member. Support for Living Donors can be found at health.gov.au/ourwork/supporting-living-organdonors-program You can register to be an organ donor at donatelife.gov.au/ register-donor-today. More information can be found at donatelife.gov.au.

Teen Recommended Reads This Months TRR Topic: Organ and Tissue Donation

Each month, Teen Recommended Reads explores a central theme or topic of discussion. Teens are encouraged to find an age appropriate novel that shares this topic and discuss how this novel relates to the theme and general questions.

In recognition of DonateLife Week, we are choosing from books that centre stories of or by organ donation recipients for this month's Teen Recommended Reads. Choose a book from this theme and let us know what you think.

This month we recommend:

More book suggestions can be found at alibris.com/search/books/subject/Organ-donors

DID YOU KNOW?

While the majority of Australians support organ and tissue donation, only around one in three (36%) are registered to be a donor.
