If you look at the school year as a whole and compare it to a horse race it is easy to say we are heading into the backstretch. We recently finished our mid-third quarter parent teacher conferences and now we have are planning for end of year activities and of all things the upcoming summer school. Tell me time doesn’t fly when you’re having fun. I have been very pleased with our current successes throughout the school year. I appreciate the efforts that our kids have made to take pride in all that they do and to represent our district in a positive light. As a district our various goals and initiative are continuing along in the right direction. One of our goals this year was to continue to emphasize student and staff preparedness and achievement. We have improved this goal in several ways. Our school wide assessment program is starting to direct us in making academic decisions that we feel will allow us to better meet the needs of our kids. Our staff has done an outstanding job of analyzing data that we have and utilized it to make decisions in their classroom. We have created a life skills class that we feel will continue to address the needs of our students. Little things that us as adults take for granted for example balancing a checkbook, credit cards, insurance, applying for a loan are just a few things that make up this class. We feel these are skills that are vital to our goal of preparing kids for their time post high school. We continue to look for venues to advertise all the quality things that are going on in our district. Albeit, not perfect I feel our staff has done a very nice job of building a larger web presence. As a parent I have found the information that the teachers presented on their web page have been helpful to me at home. It sure makes things easier when tomorrow’s assignment can be found on the web page when it just happens to be left in a desk. As most districts throughout Wisconsin, we are all strapped with the do more with less mentality. I am extremely proud to announce that based on the most recent data put out by the Department of Public Instruction, we rank 9th out of 424 school districts in the state of Wisconsin as the lowest spending district. In fact, for a school district our size we rank 3rd. I am thankful every day for the approval of our current referendum. What it has done is allowed us to have choices in evaluating our current offering’s and programs. Without it, the decisions would be made for us. We are in the process of planning some asbestos removal for the summer, some roof repairs and other cosmetic type upgrades to the building. This building may be old but it continues to be in good repair. As always I encourage your input and suggestions as we continually react to the changes that are coming down from the state and federal governments. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT At Spencer High School we have a recognition program for the students called the YOU AWARDS. With this program staff members submit a card with students name on them when they see the students doing things that promote a positive environment in the school or good citizenship. We have drawings for daily prizes and then larger weekly prizes. This program would not be possible without the huge generosity of area businesses who donated ALL of the prizes to program. I would like to personally thank the businesses below for the help and contributions to this program. Without your support this program would not exist. PRE K NEWS & UPDATES The 4k children in Mrs. Wolf’s class were greeted by a very large guest during the last week of February. Clifford the Big Red Dog, and a friend, made a surprise visit to our classroom to share a story and promote the Scholastic Book Fair. The children were in awe of Clifford and gave one of their favorite storybook characters plenty of hugs before he left. In January, the 4k students learned all about forest animals. We learned that some animals hibernate in the winter and that some have to dig deep in the snow to find food. We incorporated a few fun days throughout this unit too. One day we hibernated like bears; we had a bear cave in the classroom and wore our pajamas. We also read the book, “Stranger in the Woods,” and built our own snowman near the woods and left some treats for the forest animals. We had some animals visit our snowman and eat the treats; we saw deer, rabbit, and bird tracks around our snowman. Three more months of 4k and look out kindergarten here we come! - Janelle Rucker & Janet Wolf

KINDERGARTEN NEWS Looking at our students now, it is amazing to see how their skills have developed and grown since the beginning of school. It is hard to believe we are over halfway done with the school year. During January we did our second Dibels assessment and were impressed by how many of the scores are climbing. When it was Martin King Jr.’s birthday, we learned about some important African American people including Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, and Harriet Tubman. The kindergarten classes slid right into February down the tubing slope at Perkinstown and into six more weeks of winter! The temperature was just right for having outdoor fun and learning about gravity, resistance, and friction. Parents and children had a great time tubing down the hills as the races were on to go the fastest or make the longest chain. The 100th day party was an exciting with fantastic projects done by the students. During February we worked hard on our writing skills addressing letters to our families. We visited the post office and learned how our mail is sorted. We stamped our own special letter and anxiously waited for it to arrive in our mailbox. We also wrote valentines and were delighted to deliver them to all our friends. This gave us lots of practice forming letters and identifying our friend’s names. When the star lab visited school we enjoyed learning about the stars, constellations, and the moon. Next with were mystified with the problem solving of Professor Numbers and amazed by the sounds of the Korean drummers. Then we moved on to President’s day learning about our presidents including Washington and Lincoln. We enjoyed making their special hats and seeing if we could measure up to Abe Lincoln at 6’4”. The kindergarteners were fortunate to see three awesome plays in the LTCA. Eric Carle stories of the Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear came to life with amazing puppetry and lighting. The story of Are you my Mother delighted us with great imagination and action. The last one included dancing and singing with so much pizazz to retell the stories of Fancy Nancy, Pirates don’t Change Diapers, Duck for President, and Baby Mouse’s Musical. We now are into March madness as March came in like a lamb but we hope it doesn’t go out like a lion. We enjoyed focusing on Dr. Seuss books to celebrate his birthday on March 2. The Cat in the Hat made a visit to our classrooms and special people came to

THE

ROCKET

read a favorite Dr. Seuss story. We then got to try green eggs and ham for lunch. Soon we will be chasing leprechauns and learning all their little tricks. We may need to use our problem solving skills to search for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. We look at the order of colors in the rainbow and what happens in the water cycle. Ms. Roewe (our guidance counselor) will be coming in to teach us about managing our emotions and how to problem solve. In the coming months we will have the opportunity to see maple syrup being made at Mrs. Zuelke’s woods. As spring approaches we will be learning about the season and planting seeds. We will find out what we need to make things grow and exploring how plants develop from a seed. We will be finishing our Sports themed Reading incentive program with some fun activities on April 4. We will be entertained by the play Peter and the Wolf in April. Later we are planning to take a trip to the Spencer library to check out a book. Then we will end the year with graduation and some bowling on June 1. In between our adventures we are reading and sounding out more words to write sentences and stories. We are learning about beginning, ending, and middle sounds. Our work with word families has moved us into making rhymes as well as making books and reading to each other. We are counting to higher numbers and learning about money and time. We will practice buying things and deciding if we had enough money to make our purchases. Before we know it, we will be off for summer vacation and preparing to enter the first grade! Mrs. Tomke, Mrs. Bezlyk, and Mrs. Zuelke

FIRST GRADE NEWs The first graders celebrated the 100th day of school on February 3rd this year. They have been learning about numbers to one hundred, counting by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, and place value. On the 100th day some of the kids brought in 100 items for math class. They could see that 100 small items looked very different from 100 large items. They were able to figure out that 10 groups of 10 make 100 and 20 groups of 5 make 100. The first graders made 100th day necklaces using fruit loops. They had fun wearing these to lunch along with their 100th day glasses and hats. The first grade classes celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 1st. We read Dr. Seuss books during the week and discussed the rhyming words. The students also made The Cat in the Hat hats and listed rhyming words on their hats. They also wore their hats to lunch and enjoyed eating green eggs and ham. - Mrs. Kolstad, Mrs. Pankratz, and Mrs. Aerts

SECOND GRADE NEWs Second graders have been working hard on their skills. Continue to read at home and practice math fact triangles. Knowledge Quest quiz date will be on Tuesday, April 3rd . Please make sure they have their question sheet on testing day with their information filled in. Keep studying! DIBELS testing is coming up again in the middle of April and MAP testing will be soon after. The second grade classrooms had a great time with Professor Numbers. They enjoyed his “mathemagic” and his “arithmetricks”! The Paper Cities Kennel Club spent some time with us teaching second graders about how to safely handle dogs and avoid dog bites. The children were able to practice the skills they learned from dog owner Shannon, and her dog Paxton and from dog owner Beverly, and her dog Hershey. Carissa Schmidt (Carson’s mom)came into the 2nd grade classrooms on March 8th to talk about dental health. We learned how long we should spend brushing our teeth, yes you can’t just get the toothbrush wet! Keep brushing morning and night. - Mrs. Kolstad, Mrs. Pankratz, Mrs. Aerts

THIRD grade NEWS The third grade classes have been working very diligently. We have mastered our lower case cursive letters, and we are nearly finished learning our upper case letters. Each month, we have set reading goals and we are working to earn rewards for reaching those goals. In February we watched Professor Numbers do amazing things with number operations and we also enjoyed the production “Fancy Nancy” in the Tack Center. In math, we recently completed a unit on geometry and have begun a unit dealing with the use of parentheses, extended facts, estimation and mental math with multiples. In social studies we are studying the attributes of various communities in the five regions of the United States. In science, we are learning about the different ways plants, animals, and protists interact. The third graders are looking forward to participating in the PTA Knowledge Quest, so that we can demonstrate what we know and help raise some money for our school in the process! - Mrs. Reckner, Mrs. Payant, Mrs. Farrell

FOURTH grade NEWS We are having a fantastic year. The students are working hard and we are making great progress. We want to thank all the parents for their help and support in making this possible. Student learning is a team approach that includes not just the teacher, but the students, the parents, and the community.

We are just finishing our Agriculture unit in Social Studies and the students have written essays about agriculture. We will be starting our Lumberjack unit which culminates with our annual Lumberjack breakfast. The students will dress like lumberjacks and bring in their handmade tools which will be on display in our Elementary library until mid April. When we have completed the Lumberjack unit, we will need to get busy learning about how our government works before our trip to Madison to visit our State Capitol building and the State Historical Society Museum on May 3rd. Please remember to keep donating your cans to our can cage in the Elementary Teacher Parking lot on the south end of the building. We still need more money in order to go on this trip. We need an extra bus and if gas prices keep going up it will cost more than we have in our account. - Mrs. Fischer, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Szymanski

FIFTH GRADE NEWS Things sure have been busy in the 5th grade! It is so hard to believe that the fourth quarter of the year will be here soon. We certainly hope the kids have been enjoying the school year. The mock Iditarod held in February at the Spencer School Forest was certainly a hit with the kids. We had some very organized mushers leading teams of howling dogs. They learned the value of teamwork, cooperation, and sportsmanship while enjoying our forest. The kids will be participating in the PTA’s Knowledge Quest fundraiser. They have 50 questions to study. All kids will take the oral test. Obtaining pledges is voluntary. It is a great way to learn and raise money for the school. In math class we are learning about statistics and analyzing data. We will face the challenge of adding and subtracting fractions, exponents, and working with negative numbers. We continue to enjoy Everyday Math challenges and learning games. Media class has been exciting as we produced our very first Power Point presentations on the Iditarod. Wow! The kids did an outstanding job with the computer program. We are studying Greek mythology in reading class. The students are busy learning about Greek gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines, and a multitude of unsavory monsters. A toga party will be held at the end of March. Students don togas, eat some Greek delicacies, and participate in chariot races. In social studies class students colonized the New World and faced many challenges. They all survived! Next we are studying the Revolutionary War. Some minisimulations will include one on taxation and another in which the

colonists have to fight a strategic war against the British. May the most strategic side win! Perhaps history will rewrite itself. In science class the kids have been learning about features of the Earth. They have been involved with experiments of various natures. They learned how to make clouds. The students had to decide if a substance was a solid or a liquid. They really enjoyed this activity as their hands were full of the material. They learned how to make layers of water and learned about air pressure. Their most recent activities were making a thermometer and learning what was the best type of building to survive an earthquake. - Mary Buss, Harry Toufar, Lynda LeGrand

The fourth grade classes go to our State Capital in May on a field trip. This field trip is not paid for by the district. The fourth grade raises all the money for this trip through donations into our can cage. Remember to deposit your aluminum cans into the can cage located in the teacher parking lot off of County Highway C. Money raised starting now will be used to transport Spencer’s fourth grade children on this educational trip. Tell your friends, family, and neighbors to help support our trip. Thanks, Spencer Fourth Grade

SIXTH GRADE NEWS Leigh Anne Sieracki represented Spencer at the CESA District Spelling Bee in Neillsville on February 17. To qualify for the district level Leigh Anne had to outlast 23 5th-8th graders at the school bee. She did an outstanding job and declared she would like to return to the district bee next year. The only obstacle is the 23 others who would like to advance, also. Studying simple machines can be tedious unless you actually build one. The sixth graders built catapults. Each section will hold a contest to see which catapult can shoot a projectile (very stale marshmallow) the farthest. Then each of the three winners will shoot-off against each other to find the most efficient catapult of all. Social Studies students are working their way south. We are learning of ancient civilizations and their long lasting effects on

SUMMER DRIVER EDUCATION CLASSROOM PHASE

the cultures of today. Through studies of Mexico, Central America, and South America, students understand how others live and work together as well as the influence they have on our lives today. Through speeches, posters, power point presentations, and teamwork, we are working towards wrapping up the year with studies of differing governments and wonders that have yet to be discovered. In reading, the 6th graders have been enjoying short stories involving characters who feel the need to belong. They have read several fictional stories that feature main characters who struggle with being different in some way. In addition, they have read nonfiction works by authors who have struggled themselves with growing up and not fitting in, both in school and in society. - Mrs Weisenberger, Mrs Miskulin & Mrs Verkilen

Teams compete at math meet

The classroom phase of driver education will begin on Monday, June 4th running 15 consecutive school days ending on Friday, June 22nd. Monday, June 25th from 7:00a.m.-9:00a.m. will be the only make up day. At this point, three classes are scheduled, but the third will only run if 60 or more students sign up for the classroom phase. The classes will run from 7:00a.m.-9:00a.m., 9:00a.m.-11:00a.m., and 11:00a.m. -1:00p.m. Class registration will begin on Tuesday, May 1st in the High School Office. Classes will fill on a first come first serve basis. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) no longer issue Motorist Handbooks to schools so parents must pick up a copy from the DMV if they do not wish to print a copy from the DMV website. Please do not hesitate to contact Bob Stallons 715-659-4211 ext. 109 with questions.

WSCA SCHOLARSHIPS On February 22 through 24, the Wisconsin School Counselors Association (WSCA) held their annual conference at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison. This conference is one of the largest conferences for school counselors in the nation; with 1200 counselors attending. WSCA in partnership with Career Cruising (a company that provides students with tools to help them plan their futures), presented four scholarships to high school students who completed an essay addressing how a school counselor or school counseling program helped them plan, decide, resolve or grow in some area(s) of their life. The winners were chosen from 230 scholarship applications! Winners included two students from Spencer High School in Spencer, WI, Stacey Springob who will attend UW Stout and Danica Johnson who plans to attend UW LaCrosse. They both wrote essays about their high school counselor, Katrina Eisfeldt. From Left to Right: Danica Johnson, Katrina Eisfeldt, Stacey Springob

COUNSELORS CORNER The following are things that are happening in the school counseling area: grades 8-12: Seniors – Continue to work on scholarship applications. Senior awards night is May 11th at 7:00p.m. Graduation is May 19th at 2:00p.m. Juniors – The last ACT test for this school year is on June 9th, with registration ending on May 4, 2012. Don’t forget to use the knowhow2gowisconsin.org website to study for the ACT test. The technical school entrance exam, the accuplacer, will be offered a final time here at school on May 1 at 9:30 in the library. The exam cost is $20.00. Students can see Mrs. Eisfeldt to sign up. Over the summer students should visit college/technical school campuses to finalize where they want to attend. The juniors will meet with me in September, of next school year, to start filling out college applications. I will be holding a junior class parent/student meeting on Wednesday, May 30th at 5:00 p.m. in the commons. At this time we will discuss summer college visits, college applications, financial aid, scholarships, schedules, transcripts and graduation requirements for your senior year. Please plan to attend since there is a lot of information to know for your student’s senior year.

Sophomores – Sophomores, if you and your parents have not scheduled a time for 10th grade conferencing, please call or email me to set this up. Time is running out! This conference is very important as there is so much to get done during their upcoming junior year. Sophomores need to make sure that they are taking rigorous classes their junior year as this is a main part of what colleges look at when they make their acceptance decisions. Freshmen – Freshmen will be receiving their schedules for next year within the next month or two. If you have any questions on classes for next year please make sure you come in to see me. Next year we will begin focusing on career interests. 8th Grade – Developmental guidance in the 8th grade is continuing, along with boys/girls group. If you have any questions about high school, feel free to give me a call. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school. Have a great spring! Katrina Eisfeldt

ELEMENTARY MUSIC NEWS Our 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade music students finished their Opera projects in February. The 3rd grade wrote three songs, created set, scenery and costume designs, plus organized the story of THE GINGERBREAD MAN into opera form with scene directions. The 4th grade classes each created their opera version of THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF. The 5th grade had many discussions about the production of LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD. Each class had their own take on how we could present the story in the opera format. The 6th grade found JACK AND THE BEANSTALK to be a very challenging play to produce. After 11 scenes, we agreed that such a story would involve a pretty large budget and some elaborate scenery. The Elementary Spring Program is scheduled for Thursday, May 31 at 1:00 p.m in the Lucille Tack Center for the Arts. Grades 4K through 6th Grade will be performing. The 4th grade play, “The Mice From Outer Space”, will feature many students in speaking parts. - Edie Smazal, Elementary Music Department

SHIP (Spencer Homework Program) is sailing smoothly! The students enrolled are showing progress with each quarter, and we have exceeded our goals of students maintaining or improving their grades in their core classes. We are, however, continually in need of volunteers to help supervise and tutor any day MondayThursday after school until 4:00. Please consider stopping by to help out before the end of the school year. Your time makes a difference and is very much appreciated! Thank you for supporting MUSIC in OUR SCHOOL!! Congratulations to Jessica Meinders (8th grade) and Elijah Schuh (7th grade) for their fine performances in the Middle Level Honors Choirs of the North Central Division of the American Choral Directors Association Convention. During their visit to Madison in February, they had the opportunity to work with nationally known conductors and sing on the stage of the fabulous Overture Center. Kudos to both of them for their excellent preparation and singing! Spencer is proud of you! (see attached photo.)

STORE OPENING LATE APRIL!

Spencer FFA Speakers move on to State The Stratford FFA Chapter hosted the Sectional FFA Speaking Contest on Tuesday, March 13th—the last step before the state FFA speaking contest at the State FFA Convention in June. The FFA has seven speaking contests that members can compete in at the district, sectional and state contest. Ashley Zimmerman placed first in the FFA Creed Speaking Contest. Aaron Zimmerman placed first in the Job Interview Contest and the Discussion Meet Contest.

Stacey Springob placed third in the prepared public speaking and the junior high FFA quiz bowl team lost a “nail biter” by one point to Stevens Point. Members of the quiz bowl team included: Andrew Seefeldt, Chad Hahn, Katelyn Zimmerman, Courtney Buss, and Austin Gropp. Good Luck to Aaron and Ashley as they get ready to compete at the State FFA Convention.

Students Gearing up For FFA Agriscience Fair The FFA recently kicked of our annual Agriscience Fair program. FFA members grade 7-12 are encouraged to participate this awesome learning opportunity. Technical and material support is provided by the agricultural education department. Many students have had

success competing at both the State and National FFA Agriscience Fairs in the past. Encourage your student to participate and contact Mr. Zimmerman with any questions!

FFA Members Earn State FFA Degrees Four Spencer FFA members will be awarded their State FFA Degrees at the State FFA Convention in June. Earning the degrees will be Kyle Herman, Derrick Lehman, Sam Nigon and Aaron Zimmerman. To earn the State FFA Degree students have had to have completed four semesters of agricultural education, participated in five above the chapter level activities, performed 25 hours of community service in at least two different activities and earned and productive

invested $1500 or work 300 unpaid hours in a Supervised Agricultural Experience. Aaron will also be competing for the top award of Star in Agribusiness, Star Farmer and Star in Agriscience.

SPRING PLANT SALE The Spencer Agricultural Education greenhouse is bursting at the seams with a wide selection of premium quality hanging baskets and geraniums. The agricultural education students manage the crops that will be made available to the public for sale. The Agricultural Education greenhouse is self-supporting. Profits

realized are spent to improve the Agricultural Education program by purchasing equipment like computers and supplementing field trip costs. The plant sale will begin on Monday, May 7th and go until the greenhouse is sold out!

? Spencer Youth Recreations, Inc. is a non-profit organization that is committed to the young people of the Spencer community. At its inception in 2005, the Board of Directors developed the mission statement to promote youth involvement in recreational activities and improve athletic facilities in the community. The committee is run by volunteers whose vision of fundraising is quite unique. The philosophy is to provide camps and outings in which the public can enjoy recreational activities while raising funds. The generosity of so many has enabled the group to donate over $100,000 to our young Rockets over the past few years. With the generous support of the Spencer community, SYR has been able to provide the following upgrades to facilities and provide numerous donations to children’s activities. SOCIAL ENGLISH The Shakespeare authorship debate. The Cuban Missile Crisis. Space Exploration. Concussions in Sports. Vegetarianism. All these topics and more swirled through the brains of the Social English students recently as they chose topics for their research paper. Students spent one day at the UWSP library using materials there,

and they also used online resources available from the SHS library to collect information on note cards, write a formal outline, a rough draft, and a final copy. They also did in-depth peer revision and learned the proper MLA style of documentation. Students turned in their papers on March 5th.
