SHIP: Spencer Homework Program

State Superintendent Tony Evers has laid out his goals for the future. They involve: √ Increase the high school graduation rate from 85.7 percent to 92 percent. √ Increase career and college readiness of students from 32 percent to 67 percent as measured by the ACT. √ Close graduation and career and college readiness gaps among groups of students by 50 percent. √ Increase the percentage of students scoring proficient in third-grade reading and eighth-grade mathematics. √ Adopt the Fair Funding for Our Future plan to make school finance more equitable across all school districts, no matter their economic circumstance, and transparent to all taxpayers. Agenda 2017 proposes changes that will keep public education in the School District of Spencer strong, ready our students for college and career, and strengthen prosperity for everyone in Wisconsin. Academic Standards and Testing Benchmarks: The changes in this area are designed to raise student achievement, improve Wisconsin public schools, and set high expectations for every student in the School District of Spencer. We will continue to do our best to make sure your child is on track to be ready for college or career when he/she graduates. We want you to be aware of these changes so you can fully support your child’s learning at home and at school. This year, you will frequently hear about changes in:

Welcome back to another school year. I hope you all found time to beat the heat and have fun with family and friends throughout the summer. If you recall, last year at this time I referred to the upcoming school year as an alphabet soup of initiatives. Well folks our alphabet soup has become goulash. All districts in the state have been administered changes that will require new accountability measures to meet standards that have been created and to incorporate initiatives to improve education. I want to refer you to three areas that have been focused on by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Agenda 2017, Academic Standards and Testing Benchmarks and the School Report card. For more information please refer to this link http://www.dpi.wi.gov/sprntdnt/2017_resources.html

School Report Card This October, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) will issue a School Report Card for our school and for every public school in Wisconsin. The School Report Card, using multiple measures of student learning, will provide valuable guidance on how our school is doing and where it can improve. The new report cards will help all Wisconsin public schools get a better picture of how well they help children learn, advance to the next grade, and graduate ready for college and career. Here’s how the School Report Card will work. Each public school will earn a “score,” called an accountability index score, from 0 to 100. These scores will be included on the report card. The accountability index score that our school receives will be based on our performance in four priority areas: √ Student achievement in reading and mathematics on state assessments √ Student growth, measured by year-to-year improvements in achievement √ Closing gaps in performance between specific student groups (comparing English language learners, low-income students, students with disabilities, and members of racial or ethnic group with their peers) √ On-track to graduation/postsecondary readiness, using reliable predictors of high school graduation and postsecondary success

I am confident the new School Report Card, as well as the many other changes being implemented in Wisconsin schools, will help our school identify our strengths and promptly move to address our challenges. Please let me know your thoughts and questions on the any of these initiatives as they arise. After reading this I am guessing you feel like you ate the whole pot of goulash. I assure you that the talented faculty and staff of the School District of Spencer is ready willing and able to meet these changes and continue to make our school special. I look forward to working with you to make 2012-13 a successful year for your child!

Thank You Jerry Kobs!

The Spencer High School Cooperative Work Program would like to express thanks to Mr. Jerry Kobs for his diligent service to students beginning in the fall of 1996 and ending with his retirement on Friday, September 7, 2012. Jerry was instrumental in working with the village board members to make the program a reality. Over the years, Jerry has trained many students helping them to develop work skills that would parlay them into the future. Jerry’s students have gone on to become successful, contributing members of society in the fields of Law, Education, Sales, Business Administration, Nursing, and Cosmetology. In addition to working with students on a daily basis at the village hall, Jerry also provided career shadowing opportunities and training on interviewing skills. Jerry, the students you served and staff at Spencer Schools wish you well as you proceed into retirement.

Looking Forward to Another Great Year. Welcome back to all of the students of the Spencer School District. What a great start to the school year!!! I am so proud of the students and staff here at Spencer as each year the next group in continues with the setting of high standards all around. As we move into another school year we are always looking for ways to improve and give the students of Spencer better opportunities to be successful. This year is no different than other years. Over the past 4 years we have continually tried to make enhancement to your school that will give more opportunities to be successful.

ACT Scores: A point of contention when I was hired for this job was to work on getting our ACT scores up. When I arrived in 2008, the overall composite score was 20.9 and the state average was a 22.3. We were also below the state average in every area compared to the state. Each year I have been here, we have continued to improve in our ACT scores. This year our graduating class scored a 23.8 composite score compared to the state average of 22.1 and we exceeded the state average score in each of the individual areas. This year we also had the most students who were tested over that time period. This is an excellent example of how the staff in Spencer has worked hard to improve the expectations of the students here, and how we have set the bar higher to push the students towards more success. It also shows the type of work ethic the students of Spencer have and how they have the ability to rise to challenges.

Curriculum: The two major points of curriculum that the board had addressed to me when I was hired was to enhance both the science and math curriculum to get more students into higher levels in both areas. In 2009 we started to offer Pre-algebra and Algebra in the middle school which gave students the opportunity to take Algebra II as a freshman and get to calculus without having to double up. In 2012 we were able to offer, for the first time since I arrived, a calculus class taught here at Spencer instead of through distance learning. In 2013, we again have enough students to offer a calculus class here. We are still making adjustments to our math curriculum but I am proud of the enhancements that our math team has implemented. In the science area we evaluated curriculum and in 2011 we made adjustments and moved physical science to the 8th grade level. This gave us the ability to offer biology to every freshman, and this year every sophomore will be taking Consumer Chemistry or Chemistry 1. In the 2012 school year we will now be offering Biology II for a full year instead of only a semester. It is our hope that in 2013 we will be offering Advanced Chemistry for a full year also instead of only a semester. Our new Science teacher is also certified in Physics, so I am looking at replacing advanced science with a Physics class. Our entire Science team has worked hard to enhance curriculum and I feel very strongly that we will get more students into higher level science like we did in the math area.

Dual Credit: In 2008 when I arrived we had approximately 15 credits of postsecondary classes offered for dual credit. Dual credit is where a student will receive high school credit and credit from a postsecondary institution. This is not like A/P classes where at the end of a class you take a test and might get college credit; these are classes that when you successfully complete the class you receive the actual credits and a transcript from the institution. In the 20122013 we will have approximately 90 post-secondary credits that students can earn through dual credit. These credits are in many different areas: Science, Math, English, Technology Education, FACE, Business Education, and Ag. All students of Spencer, regardless of their interests, have the opportunity find dual credits that they would be able to use beyond high school.

THIS YEARS POINTS OF EMPHASIS: I feel the school environment has continually improved with the help of both the staff and the students setting higher expectation for each other. This year we are continuing to look at enhancing the environment and the two major points of emphasis will be ROPE and Engagement. ROPE is an acronym on the points of emphasis we want to focus on for our entire school climate. ROPE stands for Respectful, Optimistic, Positive, and Enthusiastic school climate. Our goal is to turn this school into a high energy interactive place to be. The engagement portion of our emphasis is to work with staff to highly engage students with their own learning. Research shows that you can greatly increase student achievement by increasing how your students are engaged in your classroom. This will need to be something that classrooms work on and all staff members become role models for our students to follow. I am very proud of the accomplishments our staff and students have made here over the past 4 years. In times of diminishing budgets, decreases in administration and staff, and changes with state and federal regulations, we continue to work hard to enhance what we are doing here at Spencer schools. The students here are top notch and when people ask me where I work I am always proud to say at Spencer schools. There is truly no other place I would rather be. We have had a great start to our school year and I would like to thank the entire community for your support of Spencer schools. As a school, we will continue to strive to be the best school that we can. I have always had the philosophy that there is never standing still, you are either moving forward or falling behind and I am not will to except the latter.

-Jerry Zanotelli, MS/HS Principal

WELCOME FROM TITLE 1 READING Welcome to another school year at Spencer Elementary. Hard to believe everyone is back again…and so soon! Nevertheless, I am excited to begin. Students in Kindergarten through Third Grade will be involved with DIBELS testing the week of September 10. Teachers are getting materials ready to evaluate the reading proficiency of their students. With the information obtained, we will be able to address deficiencies we see. I am looking forward to collaborating with the classroom teachers regarding those students needing extra help. My work will involve not only time meeting the needs of students in my room, but also spending time in the classroom. I will also be available to help teachers with concerns they might have by providing resources and materials promoting success in the academics for all students. Our Reading Incentive Program will ‘kick off’ on September 18 when students will have the opportunity to interact with our guest

author, Bruce Lansky. Mr. Lansky tests poems on thousands of preschool and elementary-school students to find the ones they like best. That’s how he consistently delivers the funniest, most giggle-packed, and fun-to-read poetry books every published. Again this year, students completing their reading goals will have the opportunity to win a prize…acknowledging a job well done. Our monthly winners will be posted on my webpage. Please be sure to access Spencer’s webpage for all information that is pertinent to you and your child. In addition to viewing the school’s Homepage, make sure you keep ‘up-to-date’ browsing through my site and that of your child’s teacher. 4k & early childhood news The first few weeks brought lots of learning of rules and procedures. The children have so much to learn not only in the classroom, but also in the hallway, bathroom, lunchroom, and the playground. The children have been doing a great job adjusting to all the school rules. Besides learning about rules, we are discussing how to be helpful friends in our classrooms. We are helpful to our friends by using kind words, gentle touches, and listening to them. Not only are we helpful to our friends, we are also helpful in the classroom by doing class jobs. Believe it or not, it is exciting to get a new job in our rooms! We are also learning the first letter of our name. We are introducing different line strokes to the children and we will use these strokes to teach them to write their names. Before you know it they will be writing their names on their own! In October, we will be going on two fieldtrips; to the Spencer Fire Department and school forest. We will visit the Lucille Tack Center and see “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” - Mrs. Wolf and Mrs. Rucker, 4K & Early Childhood

As one the biggest music teen heartthrobs since Elvis or The Beatles, Justin Bieber and his screaming mob of fans are a familiar part of our pop cultural landscape. Imagine how his more than 27 million Twitter followers (yes, really, 27.7 million) would react to news that Justin had decided to join the army to serve in Afghanistan. One might picture girls weeping inconsolably, holding candlelight vigils for his safe return, and being glued to their TV watching the sold-out farewell concert performance organized by his manager. And perhaps his publicist has convinced him to debut a new song at this concert and, despite protests from Selena, end the night by giving one lucky Belieber a goodbye kiss. This girl chosen by random has a boyfriend who doesn’t have Bieber Fever, though, and parents who just don’t understand her. Take this scenario and transport it back to 1958 and you have the Tony-award winning musical “Bye Bye Birdie”. It’s a story about a teen idol (a thinly veiled version of Elvis Presley) who gets drafted into the army and the girl chosen from his fan club to kiss him farewell the night before he heads out to Boot Camp. Familiar songs like “Put on a Happy Face,” “The Telephone Hour” and “Kids” will leave everyone humming at this family-friendly production. Performances are November 9-11th. Tickets are general seating and $10 adult, $5 youth. Stop by the LTCA Box Office M-W-F 10am-4pm or purchase them online at www.lucilletackcenter.com. Elaine Jones (SHS alumna) will be directing the production. These performances are presented by an exclusive arrangement with, and the music and dialogue material furnished by Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc., 560 Lexington Avenue, New York NY 10022. KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Happy Fall!! We are so excited to be back at school as big kindergarteners!!! We have been very busy learning our new routines in our kindergarten classrooms as well as learning all of our classmates’ names and faces. Our kindergarteners will be busy these first few months learning about themselves and their families through our reading units called “All About Me” and “Families.” Then we will go on to learn about our friends and friendships in the unit called “Friends at School.” We will learn about the signs and changes that happen during the fall months. We will be studying apples and pumpkins by doing many

first grade news

The First Graders are already busy and are getting acquainted with their 50 classmates. They have been working hard at remembering number quantity and letter sounds, proper letter formation, and LOTS of cutting, gluing, and coloring. We hope that you’ve seen some fine examples of first grade work come home with your little ones or have seen their work hanging in the halls or in their classroom. We’ll soon be taking our first trips of the school

second grade news

We had a great start to the new school year. Our second graders have been working really hard on learning the new procedures and the school rules. year. In early October we’ll be visiting the School Forest to check out the beautiful fall colors, and in November we’ll each take a turn to visit St. Joseph’s Hospital for their pediatric orientation. - Submitted by the First Grade teachers: Mrs. Pankratz, Mrs. Aerts, Mrs. Kolstad

We will also be going on our first fieldtrip to the UWSP planetarium towards the end of October. We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning. Thanks for your support. - Submitted by the Second Grade teachers: Mrs. Bissonette, Mrs. Guenther, Mrs. Anderson

third grade news The third grade class is back in the swing of things. We are reviewing how to use math tools, place value, and reading and writing larger numbers. Students have begun to learn the lowercase, undercurve cursive letters. In science we are studying the different types of plant life, and recently examined and compared grassroots and radish root systems. In social studies we are currently learning about large and small communities across the United States and the world. In reading, we are looking for clues to determine the setting

and characters as well as how to locate information in the text. We are also reading books and taking tests on the computerized Accelerated Reader program available to us over the internet. We will soon be tie-dying our t-shirts, so please watch for our new class colors! - Submitted by the Third Grade teachers: Mrs. Farrell, Mrs. Reckner, Mrs. Payant

4th grade is starting off the Rocket Way!! GREAT!!! We have 49 students and they are already settling into 4th grade with super attitudes and winning efforts. This fall the students will be learning about Geometry in math and designing some great abstract art using straight edges, compasses, and protractors. In science we will be studying life science. We will be learning about cells and how they work together. We will be classifying plants and animals and learning how they all co-exist in the environment. In social studies we will be studying the different regions that make up our great country. Language class in 4th grade is a lot of fun as well. We will be doing quite a bit of writing this year. Helping your child proofread and edit their drafts is always helpful. Be sure to point out things to improve, but let the student fix the mistakes. Typing final drafts is always nice and encouraged, but is never required unless done at school.

We will be administering two major tests, the WKCE and the MAPS tests. The MAPS test helps to define areas of weakness in our educational process. This way changes can be made to help improve the instructional process or where more instruction is needed. Our 4th grade trip will be May 30th to our beautiful state capitol in Madison. This trip is totally funded by the 4th grade, so please consider donating cans to our can cage in the south teachers’ parking lot. We will keep you posted on our progress throughout the year. If you have any questions and/or concerns, always feel free to give us a call or stop in 3:15-4:00. Thank you for your support. - Submitted by the Fourth Grade teachers: Mrs. Fischer, Mrs. Szymanski, Mrs. Miller

5th grade news

New faces and names mean a new year. This year, the 5th Grade is “Out of This World. We have gotten off to a good start this year. In Communications (Language Arts) class, we have started by reviewing types of sentences. Our first two were declarative and interrogative sentences. We also learned the difference between complete sentences and sentence fragments. In Science we have started the year by reviewing different science processes which we will be utilizing in future experiments. In Reading, the students are working on basic reading comprehension skills using the textbook and novels. Social Studies class will engage the kids with United States geography and history. They will also be involved with simulations. Math class will encourage the kids to learn different methods of solving problems. Various methods will be utilized such as fact triangles. It will be an exciting time in math this year. In Media class, the students will be exposed to a number of computer programs which will better their computer skills. One of these is Type to Learn. - Submitted by the Fifth Grade teachers: Mr. Toufar, Mrs. LeGrand, Mrs. Buss

5th Grade students are measuring the room by using unusual measuring devices.

6th Grade: A New YEAR 2012 Sixth grade will investigate many interesting topics within the curriculum this year.

Our math program includes topics ranging from reading and interpreting graphs, finding probability and individualized instruction. Students will move from their comfortable level to challenging themselves. We may even build and learn to use an ancient number system. Our Integrated Science begins with Clues. We start with cells, move to dinosaurs and conclude with the Scientific Method. Along the journey we will investigate an archeological dig uncovering dinosaur mosaics and attempting to reassemble them. Owl pellets are one of the most interesting lessons in sixth grade Integrated Science. The stories we will explore in Unit 1 of our reading book will focus on the common situations and problems young people may encounter, including struggles with others and internal struggles with growing up. Students will also read paperback books in literature circles, where each will be responsible for reporting specific information about the book to the literature circle group.

6th grade Social Studies is off to a great start. Throughout the year we will be discovering the governments, cultures, geography, history, and economics of countries throughout the Western Hemisphere. Through group work, class discussions, independent studies, and projects, the 6th graders will discover the fascinating world we live in. We are part of the 7th and 8th grade Honor Level System but still maintain a unique 6th grade. Treats, parties, movies, etc. will be utilized to reward acceptable behavior. We believe all students, with the help of their parents and teachers, will have a successful and enjoyable 6th grade year and will be ready and equipped with the skills necessary to move on to 7th grade. Our Green Bay trip is planned for Friday, June 3, 2013. It’s a great time for the kids. We visit historical Heritage Hill and Lambeau Field, home of the Super Bowl XLV Champions. Maybe we will see one of the members of the Pack while we are having lunch in the Atrium. - Submitted by the Sixth Grade teachers: Margaret Miskulin, Alicia Verkilen, Carrie Wiesenberger

OFF AND RUNNING IN MIDDLE SCHOOL We’re off and running as the 8th graders begin their final year of middle school. All are getting into their lockers without much help (that’s a sure sign that they are getting ready to move up to high school!). I’m happy to report that all are also ready to learn. I see them rushing through the halls to get to their classes on time with books and notes ready to go.

Reading classes have already made their first trip to the public library so they are armed and ready with plenty of reading material to keep them busy whenever they find themselves with a few free minutes. We are looking forward to a year filled of a wide variety of reading and writing experiences. Some projects will include researching a “Person of the Year” and then writing and publishing a magazine article, learning how to write persuasively, and how to read and write in a variety of text patterns. Ask your child what they are reading and writing and encourage them to try new things to expand their horizons! In science, students are reviewing lab safety and lab equipment as we begin a year of lab activities and projects. The integrated science approach allows for application of many of the sciences: chemistry,

biology and physical science to name a few. In 7th grade, students will be applying their knowledge of patterns, structure, and design with the creation of the toothpick bridge. The 8th graders will be focusing more on chemistry concepts and the periodic table. Students will also design models of the electromagnetic spectrum, efficient sailboats that hopefully float and sail, airplanes, and other space vehicles. Ask your child what activities they are working on in science. Hopefully they will have some interesting discussions with you about science in the classroom as well as how the science concepts are seen in our everyday lives. Mr. Stallons has taken over the 8th grade trip and is planning the book fair which will once again be open during parent teacher conferences. Look for the vast array of books; I know there is something to interest kids and adults of all ages. It will once again be housed in the table room off the cafeteria, unless some miracle happens to provide a larger room. Either way, look for the signs to guide you to the book sale. - Submitted by 7th & 8th Grade teachers: Mrs. Busse, Mrs. Hayry

This Summer at the School Forest… The Spencer School Forest can be a great place to spend the summer. Some dedicated students from grades 6-12 formed the Environmental Life Skills Class and got to enjoy our beautiful school forest from June 18th to August 17th. We started the summer with a cookout and get to know each other day. Throughout the summer we explored the area, hiked the trails, fished the pond, and learned about the local flora and fauna. We even got to learn some survival skills from a military representative. We also put some hard work into maintaining the school forest as well as making a few nice additions. Over a dozen benches were donated by local businesses and organizations and

were put out at various spots along the many trails. We put up bat, bird and butterfly houses. Firewood was cut, split and stacked, trails were groomed and lawn was mowed. And all the while we were out there we made friends and had laughs. Oh yeah, and we topped off the end of summer with a camp-out, complete with fishing, roasting marshmallows and telling ghost stories. Not a bad way to spend summer if you ask me. Can’t wait for next year! - Submitted by Abraham Eckes

MIDDLE SCHOOL HOUSE TIME Middle School House time has begun! Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 meet once a week with their house leader in small groups of 1214 students. Houses are named after trees that are Spencer street names. Hickory, Cedar, Willow, Hemlock, Balsam and Douglas are just a few of the House names students represent with pride. Research says students who are connected to at least one caring adult on a regular basis, are more likely to be resilient, successful adults. House time is used to address academic as well as social-emotional needs of developing adolescents. Our overall goals with House time are: 1) to help students develop a sense of belonging and engagement in school. 2) to provide students with a supportive advisor who is there to challenge them to excel and to make respectful, responsible choices. 3) to encourage students to reach their academic potential.

House time Activities • Regular Organization Checks-Students receive guidance from their House leaders and members of their house on organization and efficient planner use. Lockers are checked on a regular basis to be sure they are neat and tidy. Students earn planner stamps in their classes for efficient planner use and for demonstrating skills teachers are reinforcing. • Goal Setting- House leaders meet individually with each student in

THE

their house to review their academic goals, problem solve and support them in reaching their goals. • Teambuilding Activities- Houses provide a place for students to develop collaboration, communication and problem solving skills essential in our work force. • Competitions between Houses- A variety of competitions are held as there are many ways to be smart. This allows every student to rise to the occasion and try out their leadership skills as their strengths are needed. Some physical competitions include: snow tug of war, dodge ball, and the Amazing Race. Creative competitions like the ceiling tile project draw on artistic design skills. The academic decathlon, spelling bee, and logic problem competitions build excitement about math and literacy skills. • Honor Level Checks- The Honor Level System rewards all students for electing to choose appropriate behavior in the classrooms, hallway, lunchroom and basically any place they are throughout their school day. House leaders check in with students regarding their honor level on a regular basis and reward students for staying on Honor Level 1 & 2. -For more information on House Time, feel free to contact: Ms. Joann Roewe, PK-7 School Counselor (715) 659-4642 ext. 123 jroewe@spencer.k12.wi.us.

HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH NEWS This year we have three sections of English 10 (American Literature), since the sophomore class is larger than some in recent years. Among the literature students will read is a novel new to our curriculum: Farewell to Manzanar. This book tells the story of a Japanese-American family sent to an internment camp after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The Writers’ Workshop class is offered again this year for the fourth time. An enthusiastic group of young ladies makes up the class of talented writers, and they are already wowing Mrs. Pickett with their creativity.

Social English students will again this year gear their studies to college-prep work, starting with a unit on science fiction, specifically Ray Bradbury’s classic Fahrenheit 451. The students are all eagerly awaiting the chance to impress Mrs. Pickett with their research paper writing skills. Essential English students are preparing for life after high school whether in the military, the world of work, or technical college. Their first unit is non-fiction, featuring Population 485, the work of Wisconsin’s very own Michael Perry. - Submitted by H.S. English teacher: Mrs. Pickett

Distance Learning is a Win-Win for the Students and District What do foreign languages, AP Psychology, Micro Biology, College English, and Sports Management have in common? They are all first semester distance learning classes. Over 100 students are engaged in learning in 22 courses.

Distance learning is a win–win situation for both Spencer students and the District. Without ever leaving the building, students enrolled in distance learning classes may receive college credit by taking UW classes or receive both high school and Technical College credit (dual credit) taking NTC classes. This is a big savings when thinking about college costs. All distance learning classes are live and interactive unlike on-line courses. If students have specific course interests and the course is not offered at Spencer due to limited enrolled, students may have access to the class from some other high school in the state.

Through distance learning the District can save money and generate revenue. Sharing teachers, textbooks, and fieldtrip transportation are some ways the District is saving money. When courses are taught from Spencer, the District generates revenue from enrollment fees. This year, Mr. Gorst and Mr. Benton are teaching classes via distance learning. In fact, Mr. Gorst has AP Psychology students at Beloit Turner High School. If you want to learn more about distance learning at Spencer High School, please contact Joy Messerschmidt, Distance Learning Coordinator. - Submitted by H.S. NEW SCIENCE DEPARTMENT TEACHER! Hello! My name is Abbi Roehrborn and I am the newest addition to the Spencer High School Science Department. I will be teaching Biology 1, Biology 2, and Anatomy and Physiology this year. I have spent the last twelve years at Greenwood High School teaching Physics, Chemistry, Advanced Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and a Science Issues class. I am excited to bring my knowledge and experience to Spencer High School. I grew up in Auburndale and graduated from Auburndale High School in 1992. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Broadfield Science from UW – Stevens Point in 1997. Marshfield Senior High provided me with a great student teaching experience and I was a sub in that district following graduation. Prior to settling

in at Greenwood, I taught Chemistry and Biochemistry at Marshfield Senior High for one year. In 2006 I earned a Master’s Degree in Education from UW – Stevens Point. I really love the small school setting. I have been married for twelve years and have two amazing sons. Luke is seven and Zack is five. We live in Marshfield in the town of McMillan. I spend whatever free time I have with my family. My kids love to be outside and have outdoor activities they enjoy in every season. We go fishing, camping, swimming, four-wheeling, biking, snowmobiling, and sledding whenever we can find the time. I am looking forward to a great year at Spencer High School. GO ROCKETS!

What’s New in English and Language Arts You may have heard the phrase Common Core State Standards in the news, but what are they and how do they change what we teach our kids at Spencer Schools? First, the Common Core State Standards or CCSS are a set of academic standards adopted by 48 of the 50 United States. Created in conjunction with educators, business leaders (especially those in the technology industry ) and the nation’s governors, the standards address the skills students need to know in the 21st century for college readiness, work and life. What’s different about the standards are their focus on real-world literacy, writing and thinking skills. For instance, about half of the reading material K-12 is now non-fiction and reading skills are to be taught in all subject areas. But Spencer teachers will still have time to teach those great works of fiction that teach us so much about humanity and culture.

Writing for a variety of reasons and audiences are introduced earlier in elementary school and are further developed throughout middle and high school. Research skills for a variety of purposes are also an important focus of the CCSS. Vocabulary and grammar are taught as an on-going process of skill development that applies to overall reading comprehension and writing improvement. Although there will be some changes and adjustments, the CCSS place a tighter focus on what Spencer Schools and the Wisconsin State Standards have always taught and will help teachers and administrators continue to improve English and Language Arts education at Spencer Schools. - Submitted by H.S. English teacher: Mrs.Lohrentz

Spencer Launches First Microbiology Course This past year, with the financial assistance of the Dental Clinic of Marshfield, Spencer students joined students from Greenwood and Neillsville to learn about bacteria, viruses, etc. The class was conducted on CWTEN television for students from Greenwood and Neillsville. All students participated in several days of laboratory experiences in Spencer and Marshfield, thanks to the generosity of the Spencer Wastewater Treatment Plant, The Marshfield Clinic Laboratory, The University of Wisconsin Wood County, and BTCI from Madison. Shown in the picture are Spencer students using “high-tech” equipment to learn techniques not normally performed by most high school science students. The course was taught by Doug Benton, who previously worked on virus laboratory research and as an RN with tuberculosis patients, and the televised class is being repeated again this fall semester of 2012. - Submitted by H.S. Science teacher: Mr. Benton

Spencer Social Science & Natural Science Students Study Plagues This past year, students in the science classes of Mr. Benton and the social science classes of Mr. Wagner participated in a collaborative project to learn about the plague of the middle ages and the pandemic of the early 1900’s. The project looked at the plagues from multiple perspectives, and culminated in the display of student work during the Spring 2012 Parent Teacher Conferences. The picture shows several students standing by their posters. The project was supported by training and a grant from Marathon County Special Education. - Submitted by H.S. History Club Field Trip – Washington DC On July 30, Mr. Wagner and Mr. Gorst escorted 21 members of the History Club to Washington DC. The first stop on the trip was at Gettysburg. The tour began with a licensed step –on-guide that retold the stories of battle that took place on July 1-3, 1863. A site where there were 51,000 casualties during the Civil War. After Gettysburg the students visited the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center which is the newest National Air and Space Museum. The numerous displays included the recently retired space shuttle, Discovery along with the Enola Gay, which was the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan during WWII. Also visited on this trip was an illumination tour of the monuments. Sites visited were the Viet Nam Memorial, The Korean Memorial, The FDR Memorial, The World War II Memorial and both the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials as well as the recently opened Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELORS CORNER Welcome back to another school year!

SENIORS - Seniors should be working on their technical school or college applications. I met with all of them during English class and we also have two meetings in the computer lab, before and after school, to help with the completion of the applications. They also have the option of meeting with me individually to go over the application and to make sure that they are on track for graduation. If you want to be involved in the meeting, please let me know that as well. On February 13th, 2013, I will hold a financial aid completion workshop for parents and students to attend. You can attend any time between the hours of 2:00p.m.-6:00p.m. I will send you a list ahead of time so you know what to bring that day when you come. Parents, the best thing you can do to start the financial aid process is to file your taxes as early as you can in 2012 so you have your return on February 13th. There will be scholarships coming out soon so seniors should get into a regular practice of checking their email or checking for them on the scholarship wall in the commons. Currently, there is one scholarship available from the Elks. JUNIORS - Juniors should be thinking about when they are going to take the ACT test or the Accuplacer. The ACT is the college entrance exam and the Accuplacer is the technical college entrance exam. I suggest that they take whichever exam they are going to do at least two times. For the ACT the best time to take the first test is around February or April and then the second time in June. The FREE practice website for the ACT is www.knowhow2gowisconsin. org. All juniors know about this website and they should be using it to prepare for testing. I receive a report each Monday on who is using the site! Watch throughout the year for ACT prep dates as well. Juniors can pick up the ACT packet in the school counseling office or register on-line at www.actstudent.org. The cost of the ACT is $35.00 without the writing portion and $50.50 with the writing portion. If this is a financial strain, please let me know and I can send in a fee waiver for you based on your financial status. The following are the tests dates and deadlines to register: Test Date October 27, 2012

Registration Deadline September 21, 2012

(Late Fee Required) Sept. 22 – Oct. 5, 2012

December 8, 2012

November 2, 2012

November 3 – 16, 2012

February 9, 2013*

January 11, 2013

January 12 – 18, 2013

April 13, 2013

March 8, 2013

March 9 – 22, 2013

June 8, 2013

May 3, 2013

May 4 – 17, 2013

I will be meeting with the juniors this month to go over basic ACT information. We will have a “mock ACT test” in the spring. More information will be sent home as I finalize the details. The Accuplacer will be offered right here at school once in the fall and again in the spring. I will send a letter home when test dates are finalized. The cost of the Accuplacer is $20. In addition, the accuplacer can be taken any time at the NTC campus in Spencer. You just need to call to set up a time. I will be offering the PSAT which is an 11th grade prep test for the SAT. Although most of our students take the ACT, I offer the PSAT, as it is good practice for students to take multiple tests before the actual ACT/SAT. The test will be administered at Spencer High School on Oct. 17, 2012 beginning at 8:15a.m. The cost to take the test is $14.00. Students should sign up to take the test in the high school office and bring their money with them at that time.

SOPHOMORES - To help our high school students continue to improve their ACT scores all sophomores will participate in the PLAN, which is the Pre-ACT test. The PLAN test will be administered to all sophomores’ right here at school this spring. I will be sending a letter home closer to the test day. The district pays for the PLAN test as part of our assessment program. Individual Planning Conferences (IPC’s) with all 10th grade students and their parent(s) also will start in the spring of 2013. At the IPC, which lasts approximately one-half hour, we will discuss high school courses, graduation requirements, go over all of the information your son/ daughter has done on WisCareers and look at what future plans might entail for your son/daughter. In February I contact each of you to set-up a time to meet. FRESHMEN - I will be offering the EXPLORE test to all freshmen at Spencer High School. The EXPLORE test is the pre-test to the PLAN and the PLAN is the pre-test to the ACT. Since most of our students, as juniors, take the ACT college entrance exam instead of the SAT, we have decided that this is a great way to prepare for and improve our students ACT test scores. The EXPLORE will be administered at school in the library in the spring of 2012. There is no cost to take the EXPLORE as the district is covering the cost. I will be sending a letter home closer to the test day. Also this year the freshmen will continue to work on their WisCareers individual learning plan. This was the plan we started during the 8th grade individual planning conference last year. 8th GRADE - I will be starting developmental guidance in the 8th grade health classes. Communication skills, drug and alcohol refusal skills, responsibility, and education planning (including knowledge of career and college opportunities) are among the many issues covered. The tool that we use to cover career and college opportunities is WisCareers. The website for WisCareers is http:// wiscareers.wisc.edu. Your son/daughter has a user name and password that he or she can share with you if you would like to see what they are working on. If they cannot remember their information you can contact me. We will also be starting girls/boys groups in October. Brian Abel, our physical education/health teacher, will lead boys group during health time and the girls come with me! We will again be doing 8th grade Individual Planning Conferences in order to adequately prepare your son/daughter for transition into high school. In November I will contact each of you to set-up a time to meet. FOR EVERYONE - At some point during the school year, your student will again take part in the Wisconsin Online Youth Risk Behavior Survey sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The survey will ask about the health behaviors of 6th thru 11th grade students. The survey will ask about behaviors that result in unintentional and intentional injuries, tobacco use, and alcohol and other drug use. It will also ask questions about dietary behavior and physical activity. Students will be asked to fill out a computer-based questionnaire that takes about 25 minutes to complete. They will take the survey during the school day. If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please contact either myself or Joann Roewe. Please check out my webpage on the school website. There is a calendar there where important events will be able to be found. As always, please feel free to contact me at school or email me at keisfeldt@spencer.k12.wi.us Katrina Eisfeldt
