I have found 2012 to be very good for the School District of Spencer; we have continued to work toward our District goals. Academically, our work toward addressing the various initiatives (common core standards, response to instruction RTI, and assessment to name a few) has been positive steps toward a continuing strong academic program. We have and will continue to look for areas that we can create opportunities for our kids.

Third and Fourth Grade News

Financially, we were able to accrue savings by making changes in our staff benefit packages to continue along the goal of staying financially sound. We all understand the importance of paying close attention to the budget while continuing to maintain a high quality education for our kids.

Funds from the 2012 budget toward a football/track bleacher project will address an issue of wooden bleachers that are 40 years old. We may not have the newest facility in the area but we are definitely proud of the work in keeping what we do have very sound.

I would be remiss not to mention the tragic happening at Newtown Connecticut. Situations like this sure make one take a step back and not only love our kids even more but also evaluate what would we do if it were us. As a district we have always tried to balance the realization that we are a community center that is, on most days, in operation from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. We have prided ourselves on wanting people to use this facility. With that we have a camera system throughout the building that allows us to monitor the comings and goings of individuals. During the day we limit access to the building locking all doors with the exception of a couple. We do various drills on a monthly basis in an attempt to prepare our staff and students. In addition to these items, since the Newtown incident, we have contacted our local police to do a walk through our building during an intruder lock down drill. We are setting up meeting with other agencies to support us in our crisis plan. I feel we owe it to those that lost their lives to work hard to create the safest environment we can knowing all the while it is impossible to be 100% safe.

I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and hope that last year was happy and prosperous for you and wish you future happiness and success in 2013! With the ringing in of the New Year it is always good to evaluate what was good about the old year.

Lastly, we are looking for your continued input and support. On Feb. 11th we will be hosting Spencer Speaks IV. Please join us at 7:00 p.m. in the LTCA to participate in demonstrations of our assessment program, a new teaching initiative that one staff member is trying, and how we are building relationships with our kids. As important, we want to host questions that you may have. Our goal for this event is to be informational and get to those why type questions that we are sure most people have but just haven’t taken the time to ask. As always, I appreciate our staff, students and community. I truly believe there is no place like Spencer, Wisconsin. Our unique setting of support and caring of others is something that we all can be proud of. Good luck in the New Year and I look forward to working with you in 2013.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

At Spencer High School we have a recognition program for the students called the YOU AWARDS. With this program staff members submit a card with students name on them when they see the students doing things that promote a positive environment in the school or good citizenship. We have drawings for daily prizes and then larger weekly prizes. This program would not be possible without the huge generosity of area businesses who donated ALL of the prizes to program. Many of the providers below have been supporting our program since the inception. They have always been gracious, positive, and willing to help. I would like to personally thank the businesses below for the help and contributions to this program. Without your support this program would not exist. A Word About School Closings When it is necessary to close school for bad weather, the announcement will be sent to as many local radio stations as is possible. Channels 7, 9, and 13 will also be notified. We will do this as soon as it is possible to make a good decision. If it becomes necessary to close school during a regular school day, the notification will be given to the Marshfield radio stations, and all of the major employers in the area will be notified. Please help us out by keeping all of the emergency notification information up to date. We are well aware of the problems and inconveniences that school closings can cause, but we will do what is necessary to keep the kids safe. Many thanks for your help and patience in the past and in the future. Michael Endreas, Superintendent

Rookie Rocket Child Care (RRCC) Rookie Rockets has undergone some physical improvements since December, including new flooring, a new office, and new rugs to keep the wet snow out of our play and work areas. Also, coming soon is a bench where the children can sit to change from their boots to shoes in the morning when they arrive!! Due to the new flooring not needing to be waxed, we will no longer have to change rooms in the summer, which we are all excited about! With all of these new improvements becoming complete, we know Rookie Rockets is providing a safe, enjoyable, educational place for your children to attend.

We continue to provide a room that has a welcoming, quiet atmosphere where the children enthusiastically choose to do their homework, study spelling words and read with the help of our staff. After which they work on their social skills through play; choosing games, making crafts or projects, or just playing creatively. We are always working hard to make the RRCC a great place for your child/children to develop and learn to be well rounded children as they grow. If you have any questions about our program please call 715-659-2409 ext. 156. - Submitted by Sheri Schuh

4k news

The children in Mrs. Rucker and Mrs. Wolf’s 4k classes enjoyed a month long unit on gingerbread. We read many different versions of the familiar tale, visited the grocery store and bakery in Spencer, and ended the unit with a fun-filled afternoon of decorating gingerbread cookies. Of course, those tricky gingerbread cookies ran right out of our oven and lead us on an adventure throughout the school. Don’t worry though, we finally found them and enjoyed every bite! - Submitted by Mrs. Wolf and Mrs. Rucker, 4K & Early Childhood

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Kindergarten is moving right along. We have been busy during the holiday season making many decorations for our classroom and homes including paper chains to practice patterning and gingerbread houses to practice problem solving. We would like to send out a special Thank You to Mr. Perry Hinrichsen because he donated a book to every kindergarten student. We were so excited about our new books!!! Then we enjoyed our winter break to spend time with our grandmas and grandpas and our holiday fun. Upon return to school we started to learn about polar bears, penguins and other artic animals. We are learning more about the winter season too. If you are in school, check out our name snowmen and penguins in the hall. At the end of January, we will be going on our annual trip to Bruce Mound to enjoy one of the many winter recreation activities—tubing.

THE

February will find us learning about our community, friendships and dental health. We will make our annual trip to the Spencer Post Office to mail our handmade Valentines to our parents. During this time, we will continue to work on our reading skills which include learning sight words, blending letter sounds into words, retelling stories using the beginning, middle and end, and so much more. We will also continue to incorporate our math skills of counting backwards from 15, learning about a penny, nickel and dime, simple addition, comparing numbers and the list goes on and on. - Submitted by the Kindergarten teachers Mrs. Zuelke, Mrs. Bezlyk and Mrs. Tomke

FIRST GRADE NEWS The first graders are learning a lot this year! Thank you parents, for helping your child with reading, word cards, spelling, and math home links. Your child will continue to progress well when you spend time with him/her. We have been involved in many fun winter activities! All of the first graders made snowflakes to decorate their classroom. THIRD GRADE NEWS

The third grade classes have been making great leaps. In math class, we are learning our multiplication math facts and studying place values from millions to thousandths. Our new social studies unit focuses on communities. We are discussing why people move and learning a bit about our own ancestry. With winter in mind, we are learning that ecosystems can change. In science class we are discussing what happens when populations within a community change. We are also growing rye grass in three types of soil to see where it grows the best and figure out why. We are finishing the last few letters of the uppercase cursive alphabet, and soon

you will see more of our work completed in cursive handwriting. We have recently completed our second round of MAP testing and feel very proud when we can see evidence of our academic gains. We feel very fortunate to have access to the Accelerated Reader tests on line, and students are reading and growing in their skills as evidenced by the tests that they are taking on the computers after completing their library books. - Submitted by the Third Grade teachers: Mrs. Farrell, Mrs. Reckner, Mrs. Payant

FOURTH GRADE NEWS The fourth grade classes have been very busy this year. They did a fantastic job with the play performed during the Holiday Concert. To see more photos of this performance, go onto the school website and check out the various teacher websites. We have taken three major tests this year. We have taken the MAPS Test two times and the Knowledge and Concepts test. We have one more session of MAPS testing to be done in the spring. Our Madison field trip is coming up on May 30th of this year. We raise the funds for this trip through our can-cage in the south teachers’ parking lot. We really need a lot more funds, so please donate your cans to our worthy cause.

unit will be on multiplying multi-digit numbers. Please keep studying those facts! In Language students are getting better and better at writing. It is fun to see their creativity and improved abilities. In reading, we are using our Kindles quite often. Many students are choosing a variety of chapter books. We are learning how to use resources like the almanac, thesaurus, and the atlas. The fourth graders are a great group of kids who are following the Rocket Way by being respectful, acting responsibly, and playing safely! Keep up the good work! - Submitted by the Fourth Grade teachers: Mrs. Fischer, Mrs. Szymanski, Mrs. Miller

In math we are studying decimals to the thousandths place. The next

NEWS FROM GRADE 5 This school year is flying by and so many great things are happening in the fifth grade. We would like to update you on what is happening in our area and provide dates of our upcoming special events. • In math class the kids have recently finished up a geometry unit. We now will be focusing on long division. We have initiated a new webbased program called XtraMath to help build basic fact skills. We use the program daily in class. What is really neat is that the kids have the capability to access the program from home as well. We are proud of the gains made in this area!!! • We have been really busy in media class. The students have published cross-curricular projects using the Word Program. They have learned how to insert photos and create cool Word Art. We continue to produce photo collages of our special events using the Picasa 3 Program. These items will be placed in our fifth grade memory books to keep forever. We are excited to have the privilege of having fifth grade email accounts and look forward to learning how to manipulate Microsoft Outlook. Soon we will learn how to create Power Point slide shows. We will even do some public speaking when we present our projects to our peers. We will also face the challenge of learning how to create movies using Movie Maker. The kids will star in the movie which will highlight the special memories of our year. The movie will be burned to a DVD to take home at the conclusion of the year. • In social studies we have finished up a unit on exploration. Each student was a member of a sailing ship and endured the very difficult life of explorers in the 1500’s. Next we will be studying colonization in the New World. Once again we will experience first-hand the trials and tribulations of settling a new colony in the Americas. As always we continue with our study of geography. Every Friday we have miniquizes on places in the United States. Use the links on our websites to help your child study in a more interactive way. • In reading we continue with skill development through short stories in our basal and also with novels. We are now in a unit on the Iditarod (sled dog race). Besides reading factual information in reading class as well as media class, students will be reading a novel by Gary Paulsen. Paulsen, a famous children’s author, actually participated in the Iditarod and wrote of his experiences. This will culminate with our Spencer Iditarod at the Spencer School Forest on February 20th. It will be a great learning experience.

• In communications, we have continued to explore the world of grammar. For the writing process, we have concentrated on some of our large group activities. One example of this would be the roller skating party we had for our holiday party. During class, the students worked on pre-writing, editing, and revising. The end result is a nice final copy that can be put into their portfolios. • In science, we have started studying plants. By studying the different parts of the plant, the students can see how the plant survives. We are venturing into the world of ecosystems and from there, we will be studying space. • Upcoming dates to mark on your calendars…

o Iditarod Race at Spencer School Forest will be 2/20 with a make up date of 2/21.

o Civil War at Spencer School Forest will be 5/29 with a makeup date of 5/30.

• This year, the fifth grade was in charge of organizing the food drive. Students were assigned different duties. Some were responsible for notifying the elementary classes when they could bring their food items to the cafeteria. Others escorted the younger children to the right place to put their food. At that point, other fifth graders filled boxes. They were then moved to the center of the room. On their way to the sing-a-long, the classes were able to stroll through the cafeteria and see the fruits of their labor.

- Submitted by the Fifth Grade teachers: Mr. Toufar, Mrs. LeGrand, Mrs. Buss

This year, the Fifth Grade students were in charge of running the annual food drive. Students are shown helping younger elementary students find the right place to put their food items.

ELEMENTARY MUSIC NEWS Congratulations to our students for a fine musical performance on December 6, 2012. Many families ordered DVD’s to share with family and friends. Our January music classes have been busy composing songs (first and second grade), playing keyboards (including a large floor keyboard) in grades 3, 4 and 5, and learning about ice skating and doing our best [the story of Snowden] (kindergarten). The 4 yr. kindergarten students will be coming to music class starting second semester. We enjoy experiencing movement, songs, games and listening activities for 25 minutes each week. The 4th and 5th grades are beginning a six-week unit on the recorder. Please encourage your student to spend a few minutes each night practicing their skills. The recorder is an instrument we can enjoy playing through our adulthood.

Elementary Counselor’s Corner I hope your new year is off to a great start!

Small Counseling Groups starting for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade Students Small counseling groups will be starting in February for Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students. Referrals for groups come from parents, teachers and students indicating a need. Feel free to contact Ms. Roewe if you are interested in this opportunity for your child. The “Friendship Group” is a social skills group to help students practice appropriate skills that focus on understanding their peers’ feelings, impulse control and anger management. Interrupting politely, ignoring distractions, taking responsibility for mistakes, apologizing, dealing with not getting your way, using calming strategies, and working out problems using respectful words are just a few of the skills we will focus on. Doing this in a small group gives students a chance to work on the skills that are more difficult, while acting as role models for others when we’re working on skills they are good at. The “Family Change Group” is for students whose families are experiencing changes like divorce, a parent re-marrying or adjusting to new step-siblings. It can be helpful for these students to talk about feelings as they adjust to changes and give and receive support from peers experiencing similar issues. Kids often feel relief in finding out they are not the only one with changes in their family. We use board games, drawing, and children’s stories in group and I encourage students to talk with parents about any feelings or questions they may have. It’s always great to hear from parents. Stop in or send me an e-mail any time. Check out my website for helpful links for parents and students. Fourth grade students show how to play “The Rocket Way’ We have a great crew of 4th grade students who make the sacrifice of eating late on Tuesdays and Thursday to lead games on the K-4 playground during recess. They look pretty official with their orange vests, whistles and name badges and they take pride in being on a Playfair squad. The leader for the day gets to pick a fun cooperative game like triple tag, octopus or fox and goose. Other squad members volunteer to take on safety, demo, welcome crew or counter duties. Fourth graders enjoy playing the games with the younger students while being on the lookout for safe, respectful play. When I listen in on some of their conversations at Playfair, I’m impressed with their calm demeanor as they check in with students saying, “Was that safe?’ or ‘Are we playing respectfully?’ Helping

students think about what the ‘Rocket Way’ looks and sounds like at recess is a great service to our school. Any student is welcome to join in the Playfair game. If your child is looking for someone to play with, encourage them to invite a friend over with them to Playfair on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tell them to look for the friendly kids in the orange vests. Attention 5th Grade Parents: Individual Learning Conferences coming up in March and April I am looking forward to meeting with you for 5th grade Individual Learning Conferences soon. In the past four years, parents have said this is time well spent meeting with myself, the school counselor, and your fifth grader as they prepare to transition into middle school. We will discuss your child’s learning foundation and how their current work ethic connects with future career dreams. These conferences have a positive focus and will include a review of students’ goals, dreams, strengths, interests, academic performance, learning styles, MAP testing results and transition into middle school. As a parent, you are a key member of the conference team. The conferences are designed for parents to share and gain insight on your child’s academic and career development. This is a critical age to keep students motivated to learn and connected to the purpose behind learning as they prepare to transition into middle school. Individual Learning Conferences take place in my office between 7:30 am and 4:30 pm in March and April as well as the evening of parent teacher conferences, February 28 and other evenings as needed. 90-95% of 5th grade parents have attended over the past four years. Every effort will be made to work with you to find a time to meet. Conferences last 30 to 45 minutes. I want to be sure you have ample time to plan ahead as I know schedules are busy. The last week in January, I will be contacting you either through e-mail or a letter home to begin scheduling. I really appreciate you taking the time to meet, as students see we are working together to support their goals and dreams. Joann Roewe M.S.Ed. MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Students are stretching themselves in math learning new concepts with fractions. Word problems are a challenge. Within the next few weeks we will tackle multiplication and division of decimals, also. Problem solving within word problems that do not use a lot of calculation is particularly perplexing. Our Integrated Science the class is studying Machines. Within this unit students will use balance beam scales to measure mass. They will also research inventors and inventions. We will do a lab of magnetism and static electricity. The latter is a hair-raising experience. In Reading class, 6th graders have just finished creating PowerPoint book reports. Students read books of their choosing, created slides for the literary elements of the book, and then presented their slide shows to the class. Next, we will delve into reading short stories about characters who feel the need to belong, be it to a family, group, or culture. These selections include a memoir by Laurence Yep and “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. Social Studies students are working their way south. 6th graders are learning of ancient civilizations and their long lasting effects on the cultures of today. Through studies of Mexico, Central America, and South America, students understand how others live and work together as well as the influence they have on our lives today. Through speeches, posters, power point presentations, and teamwork, we are working towards wrapping up the year with studies of differing governments and wonders that have yet to be discovered.

Our Green Bay trip is planned for Friday, June 3, 2013. It’s a great time for the kids. We visit historical Heritage Hill and Lambeau Field, home of the Super Bowl XLV Champions. Maybe we will see one of the members of the Pack while we are having lunch in the Atrium. The last two years we applied and were awarded a grant from the Packers to pay our transportation. This year we applied, again, and are delighted to report our transportation will be paid for by the Green Bay Packers! - Submitted by Middle School teachers: Mrs. Verkilen, Mrs. Miskulin, Mrs. Weisenberger

Lauren Veale Wins SEA Scholarship! Congratulations to Lauren Veale winner of the SEA scholarship. Lauren graduated from Spencer High School in 2007. She’s been pursuing her elementary education degree at Northern Michigan University for the past five years. During her tenure at NMU, she’s completed three teaching minors (math, integrated science, and social studies) as well as a non-teaching music minor. Lauren also

participated in various leadership and community activities such as NMU’s Student Leader Fellowship Program (SLFP) and started the student organization Student United Way of NMU. Lauren is thrilled to be student teaching this semester in her dad’s hometown in Negaunee, Michigan. She plans to graduate this December and plans to sub until she is hired to teach in a classroom of her own.

SOCIAL ENGLISH NEWS Skimming. Reading. Rereading. Paraphrasing. Taking notes. Documenting sources. Skimming some more. Reading some more. Paraphrasing some more. Taking more notes. Documenting more sources. Repeating the above process. Writing an outline and a thesis statement. Turning the notes and outline into a rough draft. Revising and editing with peers. Turning in the final paper. These are the steps Mrs. Pickett’s Social English students go through once they have chosen a research topic and start the process of writing the MLA research paper. This process began in class late in the second quarter with paraphrasing practice and instruction in

how to take notes. It continued with a trip to UWSP to do research at the campus library, and it will occupy most of the class time for the next several weeks. The purpose behind all this? To prepare students in how to write and document a formal research paper using the MLA style, and to learn how to use a campus library to do so prior to attending a university in the future. - Submitted by H.S. English teacher: Mrs. Pickett

HIGH SCHOOL Counselor’s Corner The following are things that are happening in the school counseling area: grades 8-12: The week of February 11th I will be meeting with all 9th-12th grade students to update their e-Portfolios on WisCareers. The update will help them organize their activities, awards, and community service for future scholarships and college applications. Remember, all students have access to their e-Portfolios on http://wiscareers. wisc.edu and can enter new activities, awards and information at any time throughout the year. Seniors – A representative from Great Lakes Higher Education will be here on February 27th and March 13th from 2:00 – 6:00 to help you complete the FASFA (Financial Aid Forms). On Feb. 27th you can feel free to come and go as you please during the four scheduled hours. On March 13th, we will only take scheduled appointments. Parents and students should attend one of these meetings together. I will be sending a letter home in January to let you know what you need to bring with you to complete the FASFA process. The best thing that you can do is file your taxes as soon as possible so you have the information that you need from your taxes to complete the forms. Seniors should also continue to work on scholarship applications. There are new scholarships posted weekly, either on the scholarship wall in the commons or on the school website under high school counselor. Senior awards night is May 10th at 7:00p.m. Graduation is May 18th at 2:00p.m. Juniors – The free web-site to study for the ACT test is www. knowhow2gowisconsin.org. Here are the ACT test dates for the remainder of the school year: Test Date April 13, 2013 June 8, 2013

Registration Deadline (Late Fee Required) March 8, 2013 March 9 – 22, 2013 May 3, 2013 May 4 – 17, 2013

The cost for the ACT is $35.00 and $50.50 with the writing portion. We will be giving a retired test right here at school on March 27th at 12:30p.m. All students who are planning on taking the ACT should attend this practice session, which will be conducted like an actual ACT. We will correct the test right away and there will be teachers present to help explain answers that were incorrect. I will also offer

the Accuplacer (the technical college entrance exam) again this spring. I will send home a letter once that date is finalized. The cost of the Accuplacer is $20.00. I will be holding a junior class parent/student meeting on Wednesday, May 29th at 5:00 p.m. in the commons. During this meeting we will discuss summer college visits, college applications, financial aid, scholarships, schedules, transcripts and graduation requirements for your senior year. Please plan to attend since there is a lot of information to know for your student’s senior year. Sophomores – Sophomore individual planning conferences (IPC) will begin in March. At the IPC we will discuss high school courses, graduation requirements, go over all of the information your son/daughter has done on WisCareers and look at what future plans might entail for your son/daughter. This conference is very important as there is so much to get done during their upcoming junior year. Sophomores need to make sure that they are taking rigorous classes their junior year as this is a main part of what colleges look at when they make their acceptance decisions. The sophomores will be taking the PLAN test (pre-ACT) on May 2nd. Freshmen – The freshmen will be taking the EXPLORE test on April 16th. Please try not to schedule any appointments for them on this day as all freshmen take this test. 8th Grade – Individual planning conferences (IPC’s) are ending now. If you didn’t make an IPC appointment, I met individually with your student to pick classes and develop a 4-year plan. Developmental guidance in the 8th grade is continuing, along with boys/girls group. If you have any questions about high school, feel free to give me a call. The 8th grade will be taking the EXPLORE test on April 11th. This is the beginning practice test for the ACT. Please try not to schedule any appointments for them on this day as all freshmen take this test. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at school. Have a great spring! -Submitted by 8-12 School Counselor Katrina Eisfeldt

SHIP - SPENCER HOMEWORK PROGRAM Where ROCKETS Fuel Their Engines! Although our program only enrolls students in grades 2-5, I believe that all Spencer ROCKETS have an opportunity to “Fuel Their Engines” at the SHIP program, as the volunteers also receive experience and fulfillment through their community service and opportunity to aid students in need. We are always looking for more school and community members of all ages to join us and help tutor the students in our program. If you have any interest in helping out, or know of someone who would like to join us, our hours are Monday-Thursday 3:00-4:00 and we meet in the Elementary Library at school. There is no commitment required, simply come and help out whenever you are available. A new addition to the program is that we have recently implemented Individual Learning Plans for each student as a guideline for areas

they need to focus on when their homework is completed. These are academic boosting activities in specific classes that each student can benefit from. Our goal is for 85% of our students to improve in or maintain a “B” or better in their core classes. Every year we exceed this goal with the help and guidance of our mentors. Please feel free to contact me about donations or volunteer opportunities, or stop by the Elementary Office for more information. SYR continues to provide activities for our youth and raise funds to make upgrades to athletic facilities in Spencer. We hope this article provides an update our happenings… • The 10th annual alumni basketball and 3rd annual volleyball tournaments were held at school on Saturday, January 5th. It was a great day. So many former students “came back home” for the event. Check out the photos which show the youngest classes standing with the oldest classes. Young and old enjoyed a day of Rocket athletics. Members of our high school boys’ teams helped out to run the score tables, coordinate the concession stand, and donated baked goods for all to purchase. In return, SYR will provide the necessary funds to upgrade one bus to a coach bus for a game on the road. They will travel to their destination in style with all the comforts!! The high school girl’s program will enjoy the same luxury for one of their trips as reward for assisting with the annual 3-on-3 basketball tourney scheduled for April. • SYR recently received a $4,000.00 donation from Harmony Country Cooperative and its financial lender, Co-Bank. Steve Sternweis, a

member of their Board of Directors, presented the donation to our organization on November 5th. We truly appreciate it!! • SYR looks forward to the spring when construction can begin on the current project to provide dugouts and a concession stand on SPREC Field behind school. We are working to raise the necessary funds. We hope for the weather to cooperate for the job to get finished as soon as possible for our kids to enjoy!!

Mark your calendars for upcoming events: • Youth Basketball Camp for all students in grades K-6 will be held on the evenings of Monday, April 8th and Thursday, April 11th. Details will be sent home with the kids as the date gets closer. Please direct any questions to Brian Abel at babel@spencer.k12.wi.us. • 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament for all students in grades 3-12 will be held on Saturday, April 13th. Details and registration instructions will be available as the date approaches. Please direct any questions to Jason Gorst at jgorst@spencer.k12.wi.us.

TIPS FOR PARENTS FROM THE SCHOOL HEALTH OFFICE Many parents ask, “When is my child sick enough to stay home from school?” This is not always an easy question to answer! We hope that these tips can help! A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. We suggest making a plan for childcare ahead of time so you will not be caught without a comforting place for your child to stay if he/she is ill. It is best practice that you should not send your child to school if he/she has: • Fever in the past 24 hours • Vomiting in the past 24 hours • Diarrhea in the past 24 hours • Chills • Sore throat • Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school) • Bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night • Head lice – until your child has been treated according to the nurse or doctor’s instructions

PAGE

14

If your child becomes ill at school and the teacher or school nurse feel the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take him/her home from school. It is essential that your child’s teacher have a phone number where you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be reached. Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your child home from school and that childcare is available in case of illness. If your daytime or emergency phone number changes during the year, please notify your child’s teacher immediately. Please call the school’s Health Office if you have any questions or concerns.
