HEAD COACH

T H E F R O M M E S S A G E A

Bronco Baseball Supporters, On behalf of the entire Sam Houston High School baseball program, we would like to welcome everyone to the 2020 Baseball season. The staff and players are excited about this season and hope to make everyone associated with our program proud of our efforts on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. The game of Baseball offers more to our students than wins and losses. For many, it is a game that teaches them life skills such as teamwork and commitment, while also providing a platform for kids to showcase what their long hours of practice have produced. To all the parents, thank you for all the sacrifices you have made over the years and for your support. A lot of what happens is not possible without your help. Finally, we would like to thank the many sponsors that have made his media guide possible. There is a tremendous amount of gratitude for how this will help the program. Thank you,

Chad Hebert Varsity Head Coach

Q&A PRO SCOUT WITH A

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A PRO BASEBALL SCOUT?

AT WHAT AGE DO YOU BEGIN TO EVALUATE TALENT?

HOW DO SCOUTS FIND NEW PROSPECTS?

HOW MANY HIGH SCHOOL GAMES DO YOU ATTEND DURING A SINGLE SEASON?

The role of a baseball scout is to be a diamond hunter; we are looking for big leaguers. We identify, evaluate and project a player's physical tools and ability as potential professional ball players. We want to get to know the person as well as the player to aide in our evaluation. Ultimately, we are looking to add impact value to our respective organizations.

With the constant development of amateur sports, there are many avenues for scouts to find new prospects. Showcases, tournaments, recommendations, and publications are a few ways to be identified.

We constantly evaluate players of all ages. Internationally the signing age is 16. In the USA and Canada you are first eligible for the draft as a high school senior. But in general, when a player enters his junior year of high school we begin to follow his development.

We want to attend as many games as possible. From the start of the collegiate season towards the end of May we try our best, weather permitting, to attend a game and/or practice every day.

WE WANT TO BEST UNDERSTAND WHO THE PERSON AND THE PLAYER IS.

WHO IS THE BEST PROSPECT YOU HAVE COME ACROSS?

Justin Upton. He could do it all with ease and little effort. He could run, hit, hit for power, throw and instinctively field his position.

WHAT PERCENTAGE OF PLAYERS DRAFTED ACTUALLY MAKE IT TO “THE BIG LEAGUES”? Approximately 2-3% of players drafted each year reach the big leagues.

IS THERE A CERTAIN CHARACTERISTIC YOU LOOK FOR IN A PLAYER BESIDES ATHLETIC ABILITY?

Yes. More importantly we look at a player's makeup. We want to best understand who the person and the player is. What drives him? We want to learn why!

ANY ADVICE FOR PLAYERS WANTING TO MAKE IT TO THE PROS?

It may sound cliché, but continue to work hard in practices and games. Give 100% of your effort 100% of the time. You never know who is watching.
