While such a team is the ideal situation, the reality is that many employees find themselves overworked and overburdened to the point of burnout. Indeed, the line between productivity and burnout is quite thin, and it often gets crossed to the detriment of the team. DISCOURAGE WORK MARTYRDOM Increasingly, more employees are willing to give up their personal time and leave days to engage in work as they believe doing so makes them indispensable. While this might lead to more work getting done, employers can stop this by encouraging employees to achieve a work-life balance and reminding them that being overworked is counterproductive.

When employees see their managers putting in extra hours, they are more likely to do the same. Understandably, some situations or tasks call for more input, but this should not be the norm. Team leaders can model the right behaviour by taking breaks and going on holiday, signals that let the team know it’s okay to have personal time off.
