Our 24hrs Picks OCAÑA
The Jamboree Jazz Club has two performances each day, 365 days of the year and this award-winning club has seen local, national and international jazz musicians on rotation on its two stages for the past 50 years. Though whilst being famous for hosting jazz concerts, on your average Friday/Saturday night the downstairs dancefloor can often be populated by tourist guys pretending to be P.Diddy. Head upstairs for some more rock ‘n’ roll/pop music if heavy hip-hop is not your cup-oftea...or G & T. Make sure you head down to the Jamboree if you’re in the city on a Monday, as it hosts its infamous jazz jam session, get down early though as this one’s always a sellout. APOLO
Located in the heart of the Placa Reial, Ocaña serves up some of the most exciting cocktails in the city but its drinks menu isn’t all that sets it apart from the rest. The décor and crispness in design makes Ocaña something really special, and the club, bar and terrace showcase work from some of the city’s most illustrious artists. It manages to walk the fine balance of cool without being too overly-pretentiousness or over-the-top. Teamed with a re-worked mojito, it’s the perfect place to spend a summer’s evening in the city. JAMBOREE JAZZ CLUB
8
Anyone who enjoyed dancing round their handbag at Manchester’s Ritz will love the Apolo. One of only two indoor venues along with Razzmatazz that regularly plays host to big live international acts, it is divided into two rooms, the main one being an old ballroom which resembles The Ritz and comes complete with springy dance floor. The other room is smaller and more like your modern deep down and dirty modern club venue. Get lucky and you may see a big-name DJ or concert on your visit. Go on a Monday and you’ll find queues round the block, tourists and students alike for the hugely popular ‘Nasty Mondays’ night. RAZZMATAZZ Again along with Apolo it gets big names, and this really is a big venue. Situated in Poble Nou, an area once known as ‘the
Manchester of Catalunya’ due to its warehouses and industry, this huge space is divided into several rooms. Rumoured to be one of the biggest clubs in Europe at one point. MARKETS Barcelona has an extensive choice of markets from global foods, to clothing and antiques. One of the most popular is the Mercat de Sant Josep/ La Boqueria situated just off La Ramblas, Barcelona’s bustling and iconic strip, vending the freshest fruit, veg, fish and meat in the city. If you don’t want to remortgage your second home on the Costa Brava by paying a Greek bailout for a handful of fruit, make sure you go deep inside the market as the stalls at the entrance tend to charge high prices to tourists. Likewise a bit of rugby training would not go amiss, as at the weekend in summer the throng of tourists can be too much, even provoking complaints from locals to the local council who want to buy their bacalau and bravas without encountering the booming voice of an American tourist shouting at a market-trader “Does ANYBODY speak English here, buddy?” Best to go during the week. The authenticity of the market is fantastic; towards the back of St Josef you’ll find tapas bars and street food traders. Here you can grab a light beer and bite to eat after a hard days shopping.
as it is, on what was and still is the Broadway/West End of Barcelona, Parallel Street, ‘Tickets’ has a theatrical interior theme. Expect elaborate highly original and experimental tapas servings at an extremely reasonable price considering its exclusivity. ‘MILK’ RESTAURANT Milk has been serving distinctive American-fused British food since opening in 2005. Owned by an Irish couple who previously worked in San Francisco, they also own the sister bar Marmalade in Raval (well worth a visit later in the evening). With the look and feel of an English drawing room, the restaurant menu offers a broad range of dishes, and their newest addition, the Noodle Burger, is taking Barcelona by storm. They also offer a recovery brunch, perfect for a sore head on a Sunday morning! Make sure you book ahead though, Milk proves very popular with locals and tourists alike and is firmly on the foodie map. GRAND CENTRAL HOTEL TERRACE
‘TICKETS’
If you’re wanting to go somewhere a bit special and a bit exclusive try this place, but book a table at least two to three months in advance of your trip. A collaboration by Ferra Adria, owner of the best restaurant in the world, ‘EL Bulli’ (until its closure in 2011), his brother and a few others. Situated
The Grand Central is one of our favourites. Located in the Gothic quarter, the Grand Hotel was built in 1926 and still retains its beautiful original features, and remains timeless whilst incorporating modern interior design, the latest technology and lighting. The terrace is a Spanish paradise, with one of the best views of Barcelona you will surely find looking out over the central rooftops, which you can do with a fruit cocktail in hand or whilst swimming in the breath-taking infinity pool.
