In a Victorian first, the City of Greater Bendigo is doing its part to provide kids with healthier alternatives to fast-food and takeaway vouchers by supporting the new Healthy Sports Rewards initiative from VicHealth. The initiative will see junior sports clubs in Greater Bendigo join Frankston, Yarra Ranges, Shepparton and Nillumbik in replacing current junk food offerings with healthy activities such as free passes to Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre, Peter Krenz Leisure Centre and free court hire for the Bendigo Tennis Centre. Matt Kerlin from the City of Greater Bendigo’s Active and Healthy Lifestyles team said the City is pleased to be involved in the initiative and eager for kids to have access to healthier rewards in sport. “The Healthy Sports Rewards initiative is a positive way for local sports clubs to award young players

with healthy award options instead of junk food,” Mr Kerlin said. “It is important for fastfood and takeaway vouchers to be replaced with healthy alternatives to ensure children continue to reap the rewards of their participation in junior sport.” VicHealth CEO Dr Sandro Demaio said we must stamp out unhealthy vouchers to put the health and wellbeing of Victorian children above junk food companies’ profits. “Rewarding children with vouchers for fast-food during sport builds powerful brand associations at a young age and contributes to poor health, now and into adulthood,” Dr Demaio said. “Families are telling us they want healthier rewards for their children. We’re excited to partner with local Victorian councils to work towards making healthy and

fun rewards the norm in junior sport.” The Healthy Sports Reward initiative comes off the back of new VicHealth and Deakin University research[i] which shows 2 in 3 parents think kids’ sports rewards should be healthy. Among the 500 Victorian parents surveyed, half (51%) said their children had received a voucher from a large fast-food company at their sports club, and 42% had received one for a local fast-food outlet. The VicHealth and Deakin University survey of parents also found: Half of all parents surveyed had a child who had received an unhealthy food voucher in sport. Among those who received a voucher:Half of the parents would prefer their children did not receive a voucher 40% reported the voucher use prompted a first-time visit to the fast-food/takeaway business

65% of families ended up spending more than the voucher amount when redeeming it In 38% of cases, the voucher was used by the child, 34% by the family, and only 19% were not used at all. About Healthy Sports  Rewards: VicHealth is committed to sporting clubs being places that are active, healthy and socially connected. The Healthy Sports Rewards project is just one part of this. City Welcomes Increased Qantas Flights For Bendigo Qantas will add more flights to the Bendigo to Sydney route and has made tickets more flexible to accommodate changing COVID-19 restrictions across Australia. Qantas have announced that from May 24 it will increase to a two flight a day return service. This means there will be two flights a day leaving Bendigo and two flights arriving from Sydney. The flights will leave Bendigo at 6.30am and midday every day except Sunday (which will be at 9.15am and midday). Flights will arrive from Sydney at 11.40am and 8.20pm every day except

for Saturday (11.40am and 5.15pm). Qantas has been flying daily flights from Bendigo to Sydney since April. This increase in flights is more than was available prior to COVID-19. Qantas has also recently introduced greater ticket flexibility to encourage people to book despite changing travel restrictions. Travellers can book any eligible Qantas operated flight and have the option to change the date of travel as often as needed. Mayor Cr Jennifer Alden said Qantas’ announcement of more flights was great

news for Bendigo. “We are already at a pre COVID-19 flight schedule and for Qantas to announce more flights so soon after returning to this schedule shows our service has been well utilised,” Cr Alden said. “The additional flights will give travellers more flights

to choose from, making the service more convenient for residents, businesses and visitors.” For information on Qantas ticket flexibility, go to https://www.qantas.com/ au/en/travel-info/travel-updates/coronavirus/flyflexible.html

The Bendigo region, including Heathcote, Castlemaine, Boort and Wedderburn, has a youth unemployment rate of 18.3 per cent - more than 7 per cent higher than the state’s rate of 11.4. according to survey results posted last year.

employees and their spouses. “We have reached out to just about everyone we physically can over this mess, all sides of politics and of course the City of Greater Bendigo. We would like to thank however the many suppliers and customers some 60 plus who have written letters of support to both us and Council. We simply can’t believe our cries are falling on deaf ears. Every day in the media we hear politician’s talk regards job creation and helping small business. Here we have a perfectly viable

business employing many people from the local community and the aim it seems is simply to close us down.” Said Ben Harris owner of Central Victorian Welding. “Another issue is Industrial land, at just about every council meeting I can re-call you will hear councillors talk about the shortfall of industrial land in Bendigo and the urgent need to create more, the property we inhabit was utilised for industrial purposes for many years prior to our arrival, so why would it be deemed to

be farming land which is the heart of the issue.” “One of the objections to us working from the site at Ingham Road is it is not suitable for the frequency and type of heavy vehicles currently utilising it; and the intersection with the McIvor Highway is not of an appropriate standard to handle such traffic, and yet we are basically surrounded by quarries with trucks coming and going at all hours, I can’t see the logic.” The matter when it was bought back before Council at last Mondays Town Hall

meeting was brief. Councillor Greg Penna who bought the matter before Councillors, stated “I was disappointed that my fellow Councillors with the exception of Councillors Williams and Evans chose to leave the matter solely in the hands of VCAT and not re-examine a fresh application and new evidence I bought before them to assess, some claiming they hadn’t been provided with enough information to make an appropriate decision even though everything I put forward had been freely

available for their perusal for several days.” Some employees and family groups we spoke with on the steps of Town Hall said they won’t be able to stay in Bendigo should the business be forced to close as they will simply have to look for work elsewhere. “This is bureaucracy at its best”, said one protestor. “All this on the back of COVID we thought when we managed to work through a global pandemic everything would be fine, how wrong we were in that asumption.”

advice from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade by signing onto this dud deal? It’s not hard to see why BRI wasn’t in Victoria’s – or the nation’s – interests. BRI is the Chinese Communist Government’s major global infrastructure strategy, which aims to expand the nation’s interests in projects across the world. Under Belt and Road, Daniel Andrews has given away multi-billion-dollar infrastructure contracts to Chinese-owned companies. They’re building the $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel, the Metro Tunnel, they’re building our high-capacity trains. In return, the Chinese Communist Government has smashed our farmers with tariffs on barley, imposed import bans on lobster and timber products and they’ve smashed our wine exporters with trade sanctions. It’s no wonder the Federal Government has determined BRI is “inconsistent with Australia’s foreign policy”. Daniel Andrews should remember he’s the Premier for Victorians – not the Chinese Communist Government. For more than a century, Cigarette cards have provided collectors with great enjoyment in the hunt for those elusive cards. The hobby of collecting cigarette cards is known as Cartophily. However things were not always as appears today. The cigarette advertising presently said to be the back of a cigarette card was originally called the front of the card and the back was blank. Cigarette cards had their beginning in the last half of the 19th century in America. Small pieces of blank card, known as ‘stiffeners’, were inserted to protect the contents of soft paper cigarette packets and were soon recognised for their marketing potential. These cards were initially print-

ed with tobacco company advertisements. Shortly after some company bright spark had the idea of using limited pictures and words on the blank back side of the cards. In 1888 W.D.& H.O. Wills became the first British cigarette manufacturer to include cards, again originally for advertising purposes; however in 1895 they issued their first general interest set titled Ships & Soldiers. The cigarette card as is known today, was born and became a sought after collectable. Australia was a lucrative market, particularly for the English companies, however Melbourne-based Snider & Abrahams were also quite successful. Producing their first series in 1904, Snider & Abrahams incorporated distinctly local themes, such

as football and cricket. Military, animal and bird sets were also popular, while the series, ‘Views of Victoria in 1857’ by S.T. became of interest to those with a leaning towards history and the arts. In case you were wondering. The highest price fetched for a cigarette card, is the 1906 1909 T206 Honus Wagner baseball tobacco card.. In the early 1900s Wagner required the printing of his card to cease and only a handful were produced. Controversy surrounded the few Jumbo Wagner cards that surfaced in the early 2000s., but the last authentic card sold fetched US$3.25 million in a private sale brokered through Mile High Card Company. Classifieds 2021 cereal and pulse disease guides out now Grain growers will be better equipped to manage their disease risk this season with the release of Agriculture Victoria’s cereal and pulse disease guides. Produced with support from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), the annual crop disease guides detail how new and commonly grown wheat, barley, oats, triticale, lentil, chickpea, field pea, faba bean, lupin and vetch varieties will react to a range of crop diseases. Agriculture Victoria Senior Research Scientist, Joshua Fanning said the ratings are developed nationally and released in February, providing the most up to date information for Victorian growers. Dr Fanning said a reasonably wet spring during 2020 was conducive for many diseases including botrytis grey mould in vetch and lentil and chocolate spot in faba bean. The later rainfall also caused chickpea ascochyta blight pod infection in some crops. “The significant disease symptoms observed during 2020 will allow for greater disease carryover into this year. “To reduce the disease pressure on 2021 crops, growers should avoid planting the same crops in the same paddocks or adjacent paddocks where there was a high disease load during 2020,” he said. For cereal growers, the Cereal Disease Guide, provides updated information on crop disease ratings and advice on how to reduce the risk from fungicide resistance. Agriculture Victoria Senior Research Scientist Grant Hollaway said cereal diseases will need proactive management during 2021 as there will be disease carry over on both volunteer cereals growing over summer and on stubble.
