Have you seen this weed? Alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) can be mistaken for a vegetable but is a State prohibited weed which has been found mostly growing in suburban backyards in Melbourne, with a few infestations in Bendigo and Warragul. Agriculture Victoria leading biosecurity officer Emily Hill said State prohibited weeds (SPW’s) are the highest category of declared noxious weeds in Victoria. “Alligator weed is native to South America and is regarded as one of the worst weeds. It is a declared
noxious weed in all states and territories of Australia because of the harm it can cause to the economy and environment,” Ms Hill said. “Alligator weed is a particularly hard weed to eradicate because it grows rapidly both on land and in water. It can grow from plant fragments spreading from a parent infestation to produce new infestations downstream. “Mats of alligator weed can cover an extensive area, impact on irrigation and recreational activities, displace local native flora, damage habitat for native animals, clog up drains and
other infrastructure and block water flow. “On land it can be spread by mowing or sharing plants and can quickly invade your yard, making a mess of backyard gardens, smothering other plants and spreading to congest waterways. Alligator weed can be mistaken for the vegetable Mukunuwenna, or sessile joyweed (Alternanthera sessilis), which looks similar and has short, round leaves. “It is unsafe to eat as it accumulates heavy metals from the soil.” Agriculture Victoria is responsible for eradicating alligator weed from all land in Victoria and has been working closely with local authorities, land managers and community groups to eradicate the plant. “Please don’t attempt to treat
or dispose of this weed yourself. Agriculture Victoria will treat, remove and dispose of alligator weed safely, and at no cost to the landowner,” Ms Hill said. You can find more about alligator weed or other State prohibited weeds online. If you think you may have seen alligator weed, please contact Agriculture Victoria on 136 186 or weed.spotters@agriculture. vic.gov.au
New La Trobe library opens to the community Bendigo is now home to a state-of-the-art library that promises to connect the local community to La Trobe University’s world-class teaching and research. The final building in the $50 million Bendigo Campus Transformation Project, the library incorporates the substantial and historic Sandhurst collection, active learning spaces, a digital learning lab, modern event spaces, and local Indigenous artwork. Professor Dewar said he anticipated the new cultural heart of La Trobe’s Bendigo campus would become a regular gathering place for staff, students and members of the community. “This impressive new library will play an important role in nurturing collaboration, research and learning – not only for our staff and students, but also the
local community,” Professor Dewar said. “It will offer the latest in technology and flexible learning spaces – but it will also be a place where people can gather, relax, explore ideas, have a coffee and enjoy artwork and events. “We encourage the Bendigo community to come to the campus and see it for themselves,” he said. University Librarian, Ms Fiona Salisbury said, like many libraries around the world, this new building incorporates the concept of libraries as the ‘third space’. “This library will be a community gathering point – a place for ideas and discussion. It’s a collaborative learning space between the home and workplace,” Ms Salisbury said. “Ensuring the library is reflective of the community’s needs, as well as being a
Bendigo National Trust Many 19th century buildings and cast iron ornamentation were saved during the 1950s/60s due to the work of Graeme Robertson and he is to be honoured at an event on the 30th May (2pm) at the La Trobe Arts Institute organised by the local National Trust Branch. Spokesperson for the Branch, Darren Wright, said today “ Graeme Robertson made a significant contribution at a time when authorities were tearing down historical buildings
throughout Victoria. He published his first book ‘Victorian Heritage’ in 1960 which captured in words and photographs the beauty of the state’s iron work. He also worked hard to found the Victorian Branch of the National Trust in 1956. Robertson was appalled that Councils throughout Victoria were ordering the destruction of cast iron verandahs at that time.” he said. Robertson’s own Cast Iron Collection was gifted to the
culturally safe space for our Indigenous students and community, was a vitally important component of the design.” Bendigo Campus Director Dr Julie Rudner said the new library incorporates impressive digital resources as well a vast collection of physical books, including the historic Sandhurst collection. “We are grateful to local couple, Dr William and Mrs Carol Holsworth, for their generous contribution to the development of a permanent home for the Sandhurst collection,” Dr Rudner said. “Thanks to their foresight and generosity, this important collection that provides insight into the literary culture of mid-19th century Bendigo, is now protected.” Features of the library include: · The Sandhurst collection – a unique collection of 2500
works that provide insight into the literary culture of the Bendigo community in the mid-19th century, including novels, periodicals, biographies, histories and memoirs · Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) teaching labs, providing an engaging student experience · Artwork by local indigenous artist, Kane Nelson, which reflects the journey of learning · Active learning spaces designed to inspire learning and self-discovery · A 460 square metre events space to support the social and cultural activities of the University and community La Trobe University library welcomes members of the local community to join and use the library. National Trust which advertised for a custodian to take care and exhibit the Collection. The Greater Bendigo City Council won the rights but it has remained in storage for the past 20 years and has never been exhibited. Mr Wright said “ The event will hear Dr Denis Robertson talk about his father’s life and Architectural Historian, Professor Miles Lewis will speak on the history of cast iron. It will give an insight into the struggles of the 1960’s to save our heritage.” “Bendigo lost many historic buildings and verandahs
during that time including verandahs on the Hopetoun Hotel, the City Family Hotel, the Oriental Hotel and many more. It was very much out with the old and in with the new. Authorities did not understand the importance of 19th century architecture. A fine example of a building that was not destroyed is the Shamrock Hotel, today displaying its cast iron splendor and admired by so many visitors and local residents over many years.” The event is free and open to the public bookings are essential. Some of Greater Bendigo’s most talented young artists have been recognised at the City of Greater Bendigo’s 2021 Raw Arts Awards in a special presentation at The Capital with the Mayor Cr Jennifer Alden. The aim is to showcase and foster the talents and artistic pursuits of young people in the region aged from 10 to 25 years of age and this year’s awards attracted 95 entries. The winner and a highly commended entry are recognised in four categories: visual arts, literature, digital media and performing arts. Mayor Cr Jennifer Alden said the awards and exhibition provided an opportunity for young people to profile their work, receive public
and financial recognition and support further studies in their chosen arts field. “I would like to congratulate all of the artists who took part in this year’s awards. We are so fortunate to have such talented young people living in our community,” Cr Alden said. “We had a strong response for the awards and interestingly the literature category saw an increase in entries compared to previous years with submissions in fiction, short stories, poetry and even a screenplay.” Winners in each category received a $1,000 cash prize and a $250 cash prize was awarded to highly commended artists. The 2021 Raw Arts Awards winners and highly commended
entries are: Digital Media Award: Highly commended: Maddie Kay for ‘I’m in love with fictional characters’ Winner: Leroy Miller for ‘Holding On’ Literary Award: Highly commended: Uzzielle Santos, Freiheit Winner: Jobe Thomson, Come Spring Performing Arts Scholarship: Highly Commended: Tara Muscatello, Music Winner: Jade Cuskelly, Music and Drama Visual Arts Award Highly Commended: Cody Dewit-Hayes for Breach Loaded Acid Trip Winner: Lilly Skipper for Things, therefore I am

Lovell gets win on new online learners’ testing system. “This is a common-sense move by the government, and while the delay has beenfrustrating, I encourage the Minister to meet his own timeline and implement the new system state-wide as quickly as possible.” The Liberal Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell has welcomed the introduction of a new testing system allowing young Victorians to obtain their learners permit online but questioned why the system was not available state-wide now. Ms Lovell called for online learner permit testing in August last year after being inundated with constituents complaining about the huge backlog of applicants waiting to do their tests created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ms Lovell congratulated Shepparton man David Doherty who advocated for the Andrews Labor Government to implement an online learners permit system and she was proud to sponsor Mr Doherty’s Victorian Parliament e-petition calling for the change. The program was launched in Gippsland last month and the system will not be available to all young Victorians until the end of June. The new test takes learners through a course that is a mix of theory, visual
graphics, and interactive videos prior to a final assessment. Ms Lovell said while the online learners permit test will be more convenient for applicants, those successful will still need to attend VicRoads to confirm their identity, have their photo taken and complete an eyesight test and be subjected to the usual conditions of a learner driver like having a licenced driver beside them as they learn to drive.

Victoria’s capacity to manage Queensland fruit fly and protect horticultural production and jobs will be reinforced with a $6.4 million investment in the Victorian Budget 2021/22. Queensland fruit fly is a serious pest that can affect production and markets in horticulture industries – more than $1 billion of Victoria’s horticultural exports are susceptible to damage from fruit fly. The State Government’s investment will back the implementation of the Fruit Fly Strategy for Victoria, which promotes a community and industry-led approach to the issue. Unfortunately, many lost dogs in Victoria – around 21 per cent - are never reclaimed by their owners.” “To reduce the likelihood of a dog escaping, it’s important that owners are doing what they can to enrich the animal’s environment at home with plenty of exercise, mental stimulation and attention.” Animal Welfare Victoria’s dog confinement campaign will run until Wednesday 26 June across digital, print and outdoor media. Management of fruit fly in Victoria home gardens and unmanaged lands which then leads to problems on productive farms. The strategy, which has been developed in close consultation with industry, will deliver awareness programs that empower the community and growers to keep their crops free of damage from Queensland fruit fly. As part of the Budget investment, $5.3 million will be available in grants for Victoria’s three key horticultural regions – the Yarra Valley, Sunraysia and the Goulburn Murray. These grants will fund Regional Fruit Fly Co-ordinators to deliver on-ground help to manage Queensland fruit fly such as monitoring, community awareness programs, hot spot management and trialling of new techniques for improved

management. The strategy will build on the successes of the Managing Fruit Fly in Victoria Action Plan 2015-2020. In addition, it will keep Victoria free from biosecurity risks such as exotic fruit fly species while investing in research, contributing to national systems and facilitating trade. The Fruit Fly Strategy for Victoria 2021-25 will be released next month, with implementation to begin soon after. The Budget initiative supports the government’s Agriculture Strategy and will help to ensure Victorian growers are well placed to respond to biosecurity risks, while promoting and building confidence in the sector for international markets and the community.

Bendigo Family History Group are seeking your help. Like everyone else in this world the group has been affected by COVID. “We are pleased to say that we now have permission to reopen our volunteer family history research assistance service which we have conducted in the Bendigo Library for many years” said Michael Trounson spokeperson for the group. “The COVID situation has made us evaluate how we manage this service and, coupled with the fact that several members are quite elderly, we are seeking to expand our volunteer network.” “The volunteer times are Wednesdays 10 am to 1pm and 1pm to 4pm and Saturdays 10am to 1pm.” “We do have to abide by the Library COVID safe plan which would be explained. We are allowed to have two volunteers on duty and could help up to 4 persons at any time (eg 2 couples). There would therefore be 6 persons in our area. We will provide the appropriate training. Please, could you consider joining our team?” “The old adage of “Many hands make light work” will certainly help us to continue our worthwhile community service. Just one three hour volunteer session a month would be a big help and assist us to maintain our tradition of service”. Those interested parties should contact Michael Trounson. mtrounson1@gmail.com

The Card Collector David Lidsay Correspondent Royal families were a popular subject for postcard collectors in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The postcard shown nearby features the rulers of the Grand Duchy of Hesse (or Hessen). This territory has a long history going back to the 12th century and is still a German state today with Wiesbaden as its capital. Long after this postcard was published the last Grand Duke of Hesse died in a plane crash along with his family in 1937 on the way to his brother’s wedding. The plane hit a tall chimney while trying to land in bad weather in Belgium due to the Duke’s wife giving birth on board. All the passengers died. The Duke’s funeral was attended by many from the European royal families including a 16 year old Prince Philip, who never spoke publicly of his grief but took a long time to recover from this tragedy. Hesse was then absorbed into Nazi Germany and two years later was embroiled in World War II. The football card shown was printed in Bendigo and was given away by Lenten’s Shamrock Store, a tobacconists in the Shamrock Hotel. It is one of only two sets of
football cards known to exist that were issued by businesses in country Victoria up to that time. Lenten’s produced a set of 98 cards showing footballers from the five teams that comprised the Bendigo Football League. There were two quirks of this set of cards – firstly the card numbers related to the numbers on the footballers’ backs which resulted in some duplication, and there was an uneven distribution of cards between the teams, with Sandhurst featuring 26 footballers and Rochester only 14. Thirteen of these Bendigo League players also played senior VFL football which was quite an achievement. Vic Profitt from South Bendigo for example, played 4 games for Geelong. The photos were supplied by the famous local photographers Bartlett Brothers. It is a pity that the cards were not printed in colour but they are an attractive and fairly rare set today. Lenten’s opened a second store in Bendigo in the mid twenties at 14 Charing Cross where the Bendigo Bank stands today. Stickers were applied to the back of some of the cards showing the new address, giving collectors something extra to collect. David can be contacted at dlindsay5@protonmail.com

Caravan Holidays The New Trend Peter Rhodes Lifestyle & Leisure Roadshow And the buzz is: Caravan Travel is the way to go! “With all of the problems we’ve faced over the past few months, some joy is emerging travel.” “ Once upon a time buying a caravan was a tough process, going back and forth to different yards, but today’s world is so much simpler. Many people now do their research online, and then come to our show, to view their desired caravan choices first hand, it’s so easy” say’s Peter. “Today’s caravan is almost like bringing your own home along which includes your own ensuite, washing machines, diesel heaters, solar powered and very comfortable furniture.” “And you can see the van of your dreams this month Friday 28th, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th at the Annual Bendigo Lifestyle and Leisure Roadshow, at the indoor centre, Bendigo showgrounds. Caravanning has always been popular, but over the past few years, and particularly with the advent of Caravan Expo shows, the caravan industry is going through a new boom. “Many older Australians, and I might add, not so old Aussies, are taking to the form of personal travel.
“My family prefer the combination of road travel and use the huge amount of safe free camping areas The main reason is - it’s inexpensive, it’s fun, and we get to stay at places we like.” “Technology in part is the key here, Diesel vehicles are extremely powerful and are
inexpensive to run, which means it’s not á major expense take the many popular sized vans on the market today, anywhere in Australia.” “My family prefer the combination of road travel and use the huge amount of safe free camping areas, together with the many caravan on site parks. My best mate and his family prefer the more rugged offroad style, whilst my wife and I prefer the caravan parks and again there is a van to accommodate both of our forms of travel.”
“Yes, but do vans cost a lot? Absolutely not. There are caravans to suit every budget, and style of activity, again this is why going to a caravan expo is so worthwhile, as there are so many different brands to choose from, as well as experts to help, from choice of van, towing vehicle and any accessories you may need, all within your budget.” “One senior caravan dealer said recently that he sees so many people of all ages, eager now to see their own country, particularly as international travel is not an option for a long while to come.” “Coming soon to Bendigo, is the Annual Bendigo Lifestyle and Leisure Roadshow, a caravan and outdoor living show with all the latest model caravan, campers and accessories from which to choose. Jayco, plus other well-known brands this year will be bringing a huge array of caravans to the show, which is now in its 17th Year takes place at the Bendigo Prince of Wales Showgrounds in Holmes Rd. “ “The show, will be fully complying with all covid protection protocols, so your assured of safety.” Tickets are available at the door, or you can buy on line through their web site www.lifestyleandleisureroadshow.com.au/

OUTDOOR DINING TRIAL TO CONTINUE UNTIL APRIL 2022 Council has endorsed a recommendation to extend the expanded outdoor dining trial until April 30, 2022. Last year in September the City of Greater Bendigo supported 51 businesses to expand their outdoor dining offer, which was seen as a way to assist the hospitality sector to increase its ability to trade as COVID-19 restrictions began to ease. The trial included the option for businesses to expand along footpaths, into
car parks and the northern-side of Bull Street in the city centre was closed. The trial was due to end on June 30, 2021. Mayor Cr Jennifer Alden said the tail of the pandemic was long and continuing with expanded outdoor dining was one way to assist the local economy to recover. “Outdoor dining has added to the overall vibrancy of the city centre and in suburban and rural areas where businesses have taken up the
opportunity,” Cr Alden said. “Community consultation broadly confirmed support for the initiative, however Council understands there are elements of expanded outdoor dining that would need to be improved if it were to continue, particularly the appearance of traffic management bollards and the use of car parks and road closures. “The consultation process yielded constructive feedback and the continued trial will give the City more

time to further engage with businesses and the community about how expanded outdoor dining could work long term. “This decision also complements initiatives in the proposed 2021/2022 Budget, including waiving fees and charges for outdoor dining. “Business will need to renew their local laws permits if they want to continue with the trial until April 2022 and businesses that are yet to take up the offer but may like to in future, can opt-in at any time.” To inform Council’s decision making, the City
sought feedback from the community, hospitality and non-hospitality businesses. Three surveys – one for the community, one for hospitality businesses that participated in the trial and one for hospitality businesses that were not part of the trial – and two focus groups with hospitality and non-hospitality businesses were conducted. Ninety-seven community surveys were returned, with respondents liking the social vibe and economic benefits expanded outdoor dining delivered. Of those surveyed, 81 per cent thought Bull Street

should remain partially closed but views were mixed on whether this should be permanently or seasonally. People also felt similarly around the continued use of car parks. For the 14 hospitality businesses that participated in outdoor dining and completed their survey, they agreed the opportunity allowed them to keep people employed and all but one business said they would like to continue. Non-hospitality businesses were concerned about a continued loss of car parking and the overall design of precincts.
