Thinking about

the Future

Welcome to our latest issue of BENEFITZ NEWS, our regular publication that’s packed full of news from Benefitz.

Benefitz Directors, from left – Aidan Bennett, Mike Nolan, Dallas Bennett, Michelle Bennett, Robert Johnson.

This issue we introduce our Future Thinkers branding. At Benefitz we are a business that tackles change every day. This change revolves around technology and the changing face of communication. As a business we have been very good at ensuring that our offering to customers is always ahead of the times. This is Future Thinking. It’s something we have been doing constantly since Benefitz was founded 24 years ago. Looking at what is coming up and being prepared for it. The pace of this change has never been more ferocious. As this issue was being put together, we were taking a great interest in the bi-annual DRUPA print show that’s held in the German city of Dusseldorf. One of the key areas of our business is print. It is an area we have been innovative in and will continue to be. Volume printing is in decline, something that we have been adapting to for many years with the

development of our massive capability in digital printing. The replacement for volume offset printing appears to be high volume inkjet printing. This was evident at the PrintEx Show we went to in the UK two years ago and was reinforced by some interesting developments in this area at DRUPA 2012. The general consensus, however, is that truly commercially viable inkjet machines (to replace offset machines) are still two years or more away. There is no doubt though that volume inkjet technology is an area that Benefitz will be investing in. It looks like the future and will fit nicely into our overall offering. We will keep you informed. As you will read in this issue of Benefitz News our investment in technology continues. Recent introductions have included two major pieces of equipment to strengthen our signage and display area: a Tekcel CNC Router and a brand new access truck with boom lift. We have invested in enhancements to our iGEN4 Digital Printing Press and commissioned brand new Mimaki large format printing machines. We have also increased our volume printing capacity with a fourth machine – a Komori Spica five colour volume offset printing press. All aimed at being able to continue to deliver for our customers. This coming year will be our 25th. We are proud that having been around for almost quarter of a century our focus remains on the future. Our Future Thinking philosophy will ensure that we remain a very valuable partner for our customers. Enjoy the read. – Aidan, Dallas, Mike & Robert aidan@benefitz.co.nz / dallas@benefitz.co.nz mike@benefitz.co.nz / robert@benefitz.co.nz

And another thing… The 2012/2013 year is Benefitz 25th year of business. We think that’s something worth celebrating. The business has changed substantially since the Benefitz brand first came on the scene in August 1988!

Project Profile

Benefitz and the

Devonport Food, Wine & Music Festival Benefitz’s all round capability played a significant role in assisting the organisers of the Devonport food, Wine & Music festival to have one of their most successful events ever in 2012. As publishers of Channel Magazine on the North Shore, the Benefitz team produced a pre-festival 12 page feature in the February magazine. Some of the content of this feature was also used for the 60 page A6 festival programme that was designed and printed by Benefitz. “We added real value to these promotional items as we not only produced them, but we also sold the advertising that assisted in funding them,” explained Aidan Bennett of Benefitz. “Festival organiser Gavin Busch was thrilled with the finished items.” Benefitz involvement in the 2012 Devonport Food, Wine & Music Festival actually started in mid-2011 when the Benefitz Web Development team built a brand new website (www.devonportwinefestival.co.nz).

We added real value to these promotional items as we not only produced them but we also sold the advertising that assisted in funding them… This was designed and built using the BWEB platform and is also hosted by Benefitz. “Our ability to not only design and produce the printed items, but also to create this very functional website, really shows the value that we can provide for event organisers,” added Aidan Bennett. “We also produced printed brochures, posters etc. that were used to promote the festival.” The 2013 Devonport Food, Wine & Music Festival is being held on February 16th & 17th.

And another thing… Benefitz makes the job easier for event organisers. The ability to design, produce and install a whole range of items – from small to massive – (including online elements), sets us apart from the rest. Due to the fact that we manufacture virtually all the items the cost is always affordable as well.

Small Format Digital Printing

Xerox Colour Combined with iGen4, a Benefitz have made another significant investment in digital printing technology with the installation of the new Xerox Colour 1000 Press. The combination of this press, with the igen4 Press, means that Benefitz has the most powerful small format digital printing offering in the local market. The Xerox Colour 1000 Press contains the latest technological advances, which highlight the improvements in dry ink and machine structure that further increases our ability to produce digital printed items much closer to offset printing quality. One of the most significant advancements is the Clear Dry ink (overgloss-type) process on the Colour 1000 Press. This works like CMYK dry ink but without the colour pigmentation. Clear Dry ink can be applied as a flood coat (to the entire page) or selectively applied to the document (spot). “In simple terms this allows us to spot overgloss or overgloss a digitally printed item at a fraction of

the normal cost,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “It can also be used to create watermarks and other colourless images to support a design.” Due to the low melting temperature of the new dry ink and the new transfer and fusing technology, Clear Dry ink also provides a smoother matte finish with stronger colour consistency on textured stocks. Clear dry ink not only prints well on textured stock but it has the ability to create its own texture, from a two-dimensional page to a three-dimensional image. The Colour 1000 Press prints the ink on to a specific section of an image and then when re-printed numerous times, the section is raised without any discolouration or major visible difference to the image. A change is only noticed when the image is touched. For example, consider the texture of a basketball: raised and bumpy. Using dry ink, the Colour 1000 Press can create that same texture by applying the ink in a pattern and raising sections of the image,

As well as the advancement with Clear Dry ink, the Colour 1000 Press has a 2400 x 2400 dpi resolution from the patented laser technology, with 5,760,000 addressable dots. This ensures exceptional image quality and fine detail for smooth colour sweeps and crisp text. “The Colour 1000 provides real advantages for us in terms of quality,” adds Dallas Bennett. “It’s a great machine on its own, but for us the combination with our iGen4 press is a very good one. They complement one another nicely and provide us with very significant press power in the small format digital printing space.”

Small Format Digital Printing This is a serious piece of kit that just chews through all sorts of digital printing projects very quickly and costeffectively…

iGen4 Press Enhanced bigger sheet size and matte toner As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to technology, Benefitz has recently invested in two significant enhancements to its Xerox igen4 Press. These include an upgrade to increase the print size capability and a change to printing with matte toner to optimise quality. A key driver in our decision to install the $1 million Xerox iGen4 Press – the most powerful digital production press available – were the advancements in technology, its environmental qualities and a whole range of advantages the machine offered, providing us with a real edge in the market. Now this has been extended even further by increasing the print size capability. Benefitz iGen4 now prints to a sheet size of 371mm x 660mm, meaning that we can now print six page A4 gatefold digitally. Benefitz Print Production Specialist Brent ‘Mop’ Moffat explains the advantages of the matte over the standard toner. “The print is very close to the print achieved off the Komori (offset press) where as in the past the iGen4 print had a definite glossy look to it. There is a greater uniformity of the print, especially in prints that are a screen (not solid coverage). It appears that there is a

much less streaky look. I also think that the toner adheres to the paper better and it is less likely to scratch or scuff off. Skin tones also appear more natural.” “This is a serious piece of kit that just chews through all sorts of digital printing projects very quickly and cost-effectively,” adds Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “The fact that it prints on a wider range of stocks, has the added qualities of the matte toner, and the large 371mm x 660mm sheet size – bigger than all other flat sheet digital machines – means it is a very valuable tool for us. Put all this together with our personalised printing capability and it is easy to see why our print volumes are continuing to grow.” KEY ADVAnCEMEnTs AnD BEnEfiTs Of XEROX igen4… Large Sheet Size – 371mm x 660mm Matte Toner – Increased quality, closer to offset printing. Auto Density Control – Automatically detects and eliminates density variations and streaks, while the press is running. Carrier Dispensing System – New method of combining dry ink and carrier - in place of traditional developer - that yields consistent colour uniformity from the first print to the last, and from job to job. High Definition Linearisation – Results in better production of neutral greys and highlight shadows. It also improves photo smoothness, especially in faces, while maintaining sharp background details. Advanced Colour Profiling – Innovation that enables

greater colour consistency and realism in objects such as faces and skies. This tool automatically adjusts colours to closely match offset printing standards in minutes. High-speed Inline Spectrophotometer – Automatically creates colour samples on target sheets, registers them for accuracy, processes the data and takes the appropriate action to adjust the press. The results are offset and photo image quality, along with spot colour accuracy.

And another thing… Benefitz has worked in partnership with Fuji Xerox for 15 years. A strength of our business is consistency and this is achieved through maintaining long term relationships. In this case our team know how the Xerox machinery works inside-out. The result is high quality and costeffective digital printing solutions for our customers.

Benefitz signage division

Going from strength to strength Benefitz signage division continues to go from strength to strength. The company has worked in the signage sector for the best part of a decade, but added the total signage solution with the purchase of premises at 28 Parkway Drive – just up the road from the main building – five years ago. The Benefitz signage team outgrew those initial premises so the division was relocated to a bigger building at 18 Parkway Drive during 2011. This building has been fitted out with the latest state-of-the-art signage equipment. Mark Hobson leads the Benefitz signage division, assisted by Luc Verstraeten and long-time Benefitz signage specialist Simon Hill. All three have a wealth of experience in the industry, collectively over 50 years. Eight of the Benefitz 70+ team work from the signage division premises in Parkway Drive. Early in 2012, a CNC Router and larger Rolls Roller application table was added to the resources that Mark and his team have at their finger tips. The most recent addition is the brand new boom lift signage installation truck that we feature in this issue. “At Benefitz we quite clearly have the best print manufacturing capability in New Zealand for display and signage with our HP and Mimaki grand format machinery,” says Mark Hobson. “Now, with the resources we have assembled in our signage division, we have a total signage package that is second-to-none. Well ahead of any others in the industry.”

New CNC Router Shaping Up! We are now able to do all of the cutting jobs inhouse that we once outsourced, such as 3D lettering… Earlier this year a brand new Tekcel Enduro CnC Router was commissioned by the Benefitz signage division. This machine – the first of its type in new zealand – was purchased from Tekcel new zealand agents Blue Print imaging. The Tekcel Enduro is a powerful CNC Router designed for companies looking for quality and accuracy. Its powerful 3.8kW or 8kW Spindle will route through a wide range of materials with ease and the automatic tool changing system makes multi-tool jobs very easy. “Since the router was commissioned it has opened up a whole range of opportunities for us,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett, who visited Australia to view one of the machines in action before the decision was made to purchase. “We are now able to do all of the cutting jobs inhouse that we once outsourced, such as 3D lettering etc., and the machine is so versatile that we are discovering new things it can do every day. This is a serious CNC Router that is used overseas by cabinet makers, shopfitters and joiners as well as sign makers.” “It does everything you want it to do, and more. It can crease and cut and it heavily supports substrates

that come off our flatbed digital printing machinery. It can process card, corflute, stainless steel. All the substrates that, nine times out of 10 are not that easy to cut. It is accurate. For instance, when a sheet feeds through slightly off-square, the router will still cut and follow the correct line. It has a camera that will pick up its point and cut it in the correct place.” Boasting digital servo motors and ball leadscrews on all axes, the Benefitz Tekcel Enduro offers accurate cutting and superb repeatability. The automatic tool length sensor ensures cutting depths are accurate and with user friendly controls means operation is relatively easy.

The Detail… Benefitz Tekcel Enduro CNC Router:- Cutting area – 2500mm x 1540mm; Maximum Cutting Speed – 24 Metres per Minute; Positioning Speed – 24 Metres per Minute; Maximum Material Thickness – 120mm. Boom Lift Truck

Benefitz have recently taken delivery of a brand new Hino Truck equipped with a 15 metre Snorkel and Elevating Work Platform. This new vehicle will enable the company to install signage and big images more efficiently. The boom extends so work can be carried out at a height of up to 15.80 metres. The fibreglass basket floor extends to 13.80 metres. The basket can carry two people up to a safe total working load of 200kg. The boom is powered by a Honda petrol engine. The Hino 300 truck is brand new. It is powered by a four litre turbo-charged engine. “We have been involved in the installation of our large images that we print for many years,” explains Benefitz Director Mike Nolan. “To have our own boom-lift truck has become a necessity due to the growth in this part of our business. We looked at second-hand options but decided that a brand new vehicle was the most desirable due to safety and technology considerations. And of course it had to be black.” The truck was supplied to Benefitz by Hino Distributors (NZ) Ltd and the boom-lift by ‘Snorkel’ based in Levin.

Benefitz launching

Fusion Year Books

In keeping with our ‘Future Thinkers’ strapline Benefitz is introducing the innovative Fusion School Yearbook System into the New Zealand market. This is an innovative system, first developed in Australia, that allows schools to create their own yearbooks online and then have them printed and bound in high quality by Benefitz. fusion Books started off from a simple thought... Why are yearbooks being created in such an old fashioned way? Everyone loves using social networking sites like Facebook and sharing photos with friends and family, so why should creating a yearbook be any different? Fusion Books’ founders wanted to change this by creating a simple-to-use system, which enables everyone to express their personal style and create a professional looking yearbook, whether they are a complete beginner or a seasoned designer. They wanted the system to be as collaborative and fun as Facebook and as simple to use as Apple products. Not a small feat! After years of research and development, the Fusion Books system is now used by hundreds of schools across Australia and is loved by thousands

of students and staff. Fusion Books recently made their international debut in France and Benefitz are bringing the concept alive in New Zealand. Fusion Books will also be launching in more countries across the globe. “We first looked at the system around three years ago and have watched the development with interest,” says Benefitz Director Robert Johnson, who is driving the project in New Zealand. “The growth in Australia has been very impressive with schools obviously appreciating how easy the system is and the fact that it simplifies the entire process. We are excited about the potential in New Zealand.” For more information contact: Robert Johnson, Email: robert@benefitz.co.nz, Phone: 0800-99-55-00, Visit: www.fusionbooks.co.nz

Project Profile

Benefitz signage for A project Benefitz has been thrilled to be part of is providing the total display and signage solution for the redevelopment of the Millennium Institute of Sport in Mairangi Bay. This was a great facility when it was first built over a decade ago, but with the current redevelopment it is truly world class. While construction is continuing, some very impressive parts of the ambitious upgrade opened early in 2012 – including the new gym, a spacious new entry area and foyer, as well as the new AUT University offices. Working with head contractor Argon Construction and architects Pacific Environments, Benefitz have produced and installed all the impressive new signage for the project. The Millennium Institute of Sport and Health was established in 2002 to assist more New Zealand athletes to win on the world stage and to help the community lead fitter, healthier, longer lives. The establishment of the facility was driven by Graeme Avery (who was then heavily involved in North Harbour Bays Athletics), the North Shore Swimming Club (which had a desire for a 50 metre swimming pool), Northsport (weightlifting) and Sir Stephen Tindall, who was involved in local water polo. Rangitoto College, under the leadership of the late Allan Peachey, was also involved from the perspective that the athletics field was on Ministry of Education land. “After 10 years the facility was quite clearly at capacity. The number of people who used the pool, gym and track were exceeding what it was built for,” explains CEO Mike Stanley. “The fact also that the community was sharing facilities with our high performance athletes meant that each sector was being compromised. Within the community we need to cater

for high numbers of people, while the high performance athlete’s needs are more specific.” The Millennium is also now officially the National Training Centre for High Performance Sport. The facility is referred to often as the AUT Millennium. The arrangement started with AUT being a tertiary partner. They were a contributor of funds to the initial facility. They have now formed a 50/50 joint venture with AUT that is called the AUT Millennium Ownership Trust (AMOT), which owns the entire facility. Hence why the entire facility is known as the AUT Millennium. AUT University is the Millennium Institute’s principal tertiary education and applied Sport Science services and research partner. Closely aligned with the AUT University is the amazing new gym for New Zealand’s high performance athletes. Here top athletes will be able to train in a world class facility, surrounded by world class equipment and have virtually all the support services they need. You can almost smell gold medals as you walk through the place. Another real boost for the facility – and the North Shore – is the decision by High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ), a new subsidiary of SPARC, to have their national base at AUT Millennium. This body is responsible for developing and supporting the country’s elite athletes. “If you haven’t had a look at the changes that have been made at AUT Millennium, then it is worth going for a browse,” says Benefitz MD Aidan Bennett. “A striking feature is the facade of the new four level building that has been built on the Northern end of the facility. The new main entrance is appropriately black with a silver fern. Images all produced and installed by Benefitz. Once you are in the main entrance, you are greeted with images of many of New Zealand’s most successful athletes. Striking images and signage are also in the brand new Millennium Gym, on the first floor. Our signage team have done a great job and this signage really emphasises our all round capability.” This is all stage one of the $43 million development. Stage two involves the building of a second 10 lane/50 metre pool, as well as a warm up and learn-to-swim pool, on the site

World Class that is currently the main car park. This will complete the Auckland Regional Aquatic Centre. As a result there will be more international swimming meets, with two 50 metre pools enabling growth in swimming and water polo. And another thing‌ Just to demonstrate the complete package that Benefitz offers this stage of the Millennium project was completed with the installation of the massive 30 metre long printed skin on the end of the northern end of the exterior pool wall. This skin was printed on the Benefitz XP5300 five metre wide billboard printing machine – the biggest machine in the country – and installed by the Benefitz team.

Golf Score Cards

24 years of g lf

for Benefitz

This year Benefitz is celebrating its 24th year of producing score cards for golf clubs throughout New Zealand. During this time it is estimated we have printed up to 60 million score cards. The company first got into producing these score cards back in 1988 when Managing Director Aidan Bennett spotted an opportunity to enhance the quality of the score cards being used by golfers at each club. “I was playing golf one day and was scoring on this shabby single colour card and it dawned on me that score cards could become a powerful promotional vehicle,” explains Aidan Bennett. “So I set about designing an attractive generic score card that could be rolled out across a number of clubs. I approached AMP, who were big sponsors of golf back then, and they loved the concept. With 100% sponsorship from

AMP, we rolled the new full colour Benefitz score card out across virtually all of the Auckland golf clubs. The concept was then picked up by AMP’s network of agents throughout New Zealand and it went nationwide.” By the early ‘90s Benefitz was responsible for the printing of score cards for over 300 golf clubs throughout the country. From Kaitaia in the north to Bluff in the south. “After quite a few years of sponsorship AMP decided to pull back from what they were spending and we reverted to printing directly for the clubs,” adds Aidan Bennett. “Many of the AMP agents stayed involved and we still have some involved today. But over the last decade we have been essentially printing for the individual clubs and their locally sourced sponsors and advertisers.” The larger golf clubs in New Zealand use up to 100,000 score cards a year. An average club will use 30,000 to 40,000. Benefitz still prints golf score cards for over 200

clubs from all over the country. The company also works closely as a preferred print partner for DotGolf, a company which has developed an innovative score card system that allows specific details of the individual player to be laser printed at the golf clubs. Benefitz prints most of these cards colour on one side and the laser printing is done on the other side at the clubs. “The introduction of our Truepress Hybrid Printing Machine has provided us with real flexibility when printing these score cards,” explains Aidan Bennett. “Previously we printed all these score cards monthly,

in one run, on our Komori press. Now, with the Truepress, we have the flexibility to print them virtually on demand just as economically.” The longevity of the project is something that Aidan Bennett is very proud of. “To be still going strong in this golf market after 24 years is something that warms my heart,” says Aidan. “This type of longevity with many customers and different projects is what has laid the foundations for the business we have today at Benefitz.” Visit: www.benefitz.co.nz/golfcards

This processless system was provided by fujifilm, the agents for screen in new zealand. “This machine has now been in operation for over three years and has proven to be fantastic for our business,” advises Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “With the Screen PT-R4300 B2 platesetter, our volume offset machines operate without the need for chemicals which is very pleasing. Apart from the environmental advancements the machine is also much more reliable and efficient than the previous technology it replaced. It is more automated and is able to produce plates much faster, which has been excellent given the growth we have had in this part of our business.”

The Screen PT-R4300 platesetter has been developed specifically for those who demand the very highest in both print and environmental performance. It requires no finishing unit, and the chemistry, water and waste by-products of traditional plate production are eliminated completely. There is no compromise to either the quality or productivity achieved when compared to traditional thermal systems.

And another thing… The Screen PT-R4300 platesetter that makes printing plates for our Komori and The Benefitz Truepress (offset press) is also a very environmentally friendly and unique machine that utilises a thermal multi-array laser diode imaging system to expose a new processless plate. The synthetic plate is made on the press and no chemical processing is required.

recycling corflute waste With the ability to print directly on to virtually any substrate, Benefitz is a significant consumer of Corflute. Corflute is lightweight, durable fluted polypropylene, ideal for signage, display and exhibition. We are thrilled to announce that we can now sell Corflute in the knowledge that it is a fully recyclable product. As one of the key flute customers of one of Australasia’s leading suppliers, Benefitz has been involved in helping to trial a recycling program for the product. The recycling initiative was trialled over a six month period and proved to be very successful. The supplier of the product offers a service that involves collecting the waste or used product from us. This product is then recycled. “We are thrilled with this system that is now in place,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “The volume of Corflute we get through

Stage 1 – The waste Mulflute® gets picked up from Benefitz in bags and brought to Mulford’s Warehouse in Mt Wellington.

Stage 2 – The waste product is converted to compacted bales before being reground back to pallet form at a New Zealand recycling plant.

means that there is a great deal of waste which can now be recycled, which is a very good result for all concerned.” Benefitz prints corflute on the HP FB6100 Flatbed Digital Printing Machine. This machine can print an image up to three metres x two metres in size and on substrates up to 50mm thick.

Choosing 9LIVES PAPER to help protect our natural environment Benefitz is one of the largest users of 9lives paper. This range of coated (gloss or satin matt) and uncoated papers is one of the most sustainable in the market. it is up to 55% recycled fibre (30% pre consumer, 25% post consumer), includes 45% fsC certified virgin pulp and is Process Chlorine free (PCf). it is supplied to Benefitz via spicers Paper through an isO 14001 accredited supplier. “We made a decision a couple of years ago to concentrate our efforts on sustainable papers and 9lives really foots the bill for our every day use,” explains Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “We use it and recommend it in a big way for projects in both our digital and volume offset printing

departments. It is used as our standard paper range.” 9lives gloss or satin matt art paper is available in the following weights 115gsm, 130gsm, 150gsm, 170gsm, 200gsm, 250gsm, 300gsm, 350gsm, 400gsm. 9Lives uncoated is available as 80gsm, 90gsm, 120gsm, 280gsm. The added bonus for those who are environmentally conscious is that every purchase you make of 9lives from Benefitz is recorded and for every tonne of paper sold, Spicers Paper donates $20 to WWF-New Zealand projects that help protect our unique environment. To date this has raised over $120,000 for WWF-New Zealand. Visit: www.9livesfund.org.nz

And another thing… Benefitz is constantly investing in new technology. This investment plays a big part in continually reducing the business’s environmental impact. This is a key consideration in the choice of new technologies.

Grand Format Digital Printing

5 Metre Billboard Machine proves

big is best! 5 metres wide Billboard & Banner Printer. Up to 300 square metres per hour! Up to 360dpi as standard. UV-curable pigmented inks, and will print on recyclable substrates. The Benefitz HP XP5300 five metres wide Billboard and Banner printing machine is the biggest and without doubt the best Billboard & Banner printing machine in the country. not only does it print to five metres wide, and any length, but also up to 300 square metres per hour, 360dpi as standard with UV-curable pigmented inks and it can also print on recyclable substrates. Since it was installed brand new, the XP5300 has offered real advantages in speed and quality, as well as vastly improving the Benefitz environmental situation. The commissioning of this machine saw Benefitz completely move away from using hard-solvent inks. It can also print on much more environmentally friendly substrates.

26

Benefitz news

The XP5300 has two print modes: High speed (up to 300 square metres an hour using specialty ink for billboards, banners and outdoor signage) and a Standard speed (up to 90 square metres an hour for higher resolution and internal application). The HP Scitex XP5300 will print on PVC Banner Vinyl, Backlit Vinyl, Mesh Vinyl, polyethylene, synthetic paper and textiles up to five metres wide.

“The decision to go with this machine was really driven by our desire to get away from printing with hard-solvent inks,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “It was essential that we offer our customers an environmentally sound solution for their grand format printing and the XP5300 is that solution. We can now print billboard skins on completely recyclable media using UV-curable inks. There have been some real added bonuses over the older machinery in that the XP5300 prints up to six times faster than our previous machinery – at higher resolutions.” “We have also discovered that it is a very versatile machine due to its speed, low cost consumables

and ability to print on a range of substrates. An example is that as well as billboards and banners we are now printing economical point-of-sale posters (A1, AO etc) on the machine on synthetic and paper stocks. We have been able to price these posters at a rate which competes with traditional solutions such as screenprinting, and the quality is better. An example is a recent campaign we did for a leading Australian retail group. There were over 2000 instore banners and posters required. These were all printed, finished and despatched within a few days by doing the whole campaign on this very fast, efficient and cost-effective machine.”

And another thing… No other grand format print supplier in our part of the world can print any wider than 3.2 metres. With this XP5300 we can print up to 5 metres wide. Very few have also invested in new technology that enables them to print onto environmentally friendly substrates.

So it is fair to say that the machine was pretty well worn out. We decided to replace that machine with two machines. Now the extra machine is flat out as well.” Benefitz is one of New Zealand’s leading large

For a great deal of these projects we use one of our four state-of-the-art Mimaki machines. “We work closely with the brand’s New Zealand agents Blue Print Imaging to ensure these machines deliver to their maximum,” adds Dallas Bennett. “We are thrilled with what we have achieved with our Mimakis. Throw in the print quality of our five metres wide HP machine and Flatbed and we have the best large and grand format solutions in the country by far. The four Benefitz Mimaki printing machines include a 3.2 metre wide grand format printing machine and three 1.6 metre wide large format printing machines. We also have a Mimaki vinyl cutter in our signage department. The printing machines all print at up to 1440dpi which is virtually photo-quality resolution.

We are thrilled with what we have achieved with our Mimakis. They have certainly played a big part in our success.

And another thing‌ A big reason for choosing Mimaki was the lower consumable costs which have resulted in more favourable pricing for our customers. At the time of commissioning the cost of Mimaki inks from Blueprint Imaging was 40% less per square metre than the ink provided by a previous supplier for the machines they superseded.

about anything! glass, wood, metals, or more conventional media such as foam board, PVC, corflute and signage board up to 50mm thick. A massive advantage is its ability to print white ink. “The machine has opened up new opportunities for us in many different areas,” advises Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “With a speed of up to 100 square metres an hour and a resolution of 1270dpi this machine can compete with screen-printing and the quality is superior.” “Printing is also taking over many parts of the signage industry and this flatbed is speeding up this change. It

can print on virtually anything that is less than 50mm thick so the possibilities are limitless. Since installation we have printed directly on to lots of signage substrates like ACM board and signboard with excellent results. These can be protected with coatings to provide added protection in harsh environments or for long-term signage. There are obviously economies to be gained by printing directly on to substrates and not having to go through the traditional and more time consuming process of printing onto adhesives, laminating and then applying to signboard.”

And another thing… The addition of the Benefitz Tekcel CNC Router completes a handy package for the Benefitz team. Items can be printed on the Benefitz FB6100 Flatbed and then cut accurately to shape on the router. Not many others have this total capability.

Offset Volume Printing

New Volume Offset Machine Installed Benefitz has recently installed an ex-demo model Komori Five Colour Offset Volume Printing Press, (Komori Spica 29) to keep pace with the company’s growing volume printing workload. The installation of the new machine has resulted in the doubling of volume printing capability. it has been installed alongside Benefitz’ existing Komori press that was purchased brand new just a few years ago. “We certainly needed to make an investment to ensure we were continuing to satisfying our customers,” explains Benefitz MD Aidan Bennett. “Medium-term we have our eyes on volume inkjet technology but following two of the most recent global print Shows, it appears that, in reality, this technology is still three or more years away from our shores. We therefore needed to bridge a gap and

we believe this Komori Spica 29 machine will do that perfectly.” The Komori Spica press offers the latest in automation features to shorten makeready, reduce costs and lighten the workload for operators. The Komori press features a precision ink key system for outstanding print quality. “We believe we have a pretty good balance now with our two Komoris and the Screen Truepress Hybrid volume offset machines, complemented by our FujiXerox Digital Presses – the iGEN4 and Colour 1000. Our ability to print the large sheet size digitally on our iGEN4 fits nicely.”

Westlake Jubilee Rugby Book long serving Westlake Boys High school mathematics teacher and rugby coach Tony Vinicombe had spent his every spare moment over a two year period dedicated to writing a history of Westlake Rugby. Benefitz has helped Tony and the school produce this as a high quality printed item. The 228 page book was launched at a function at the school in mid-May 2012. WESTLAKE RUGBY: THE FIRST 50 YEARS commemorates the school’s 50th Jubilee and features over 100 photos and mentions thousands of Westlake rugby players, coaches and supporters from the past 50 years and details performances at all grades, not just the First XV. The stats and facts section is amazing in its detail, including such statistics as most championships won by family members. The book was designed by Eddie van den Broek of Benefitz under the direction of Managing Director Aidan Bennett who has a great deal of experience in book publishing. It was printed on Benefitz 5-Colour Komori offset press. “The only part of the book we didn’t do was the binding,” said Aidan Bennett proudly as the book was being launched. “Eddie is a fantastic designer and worked very closely with author Tony Vinicombe to produce an outstanding book.

Author Tony Vinicombe (second from left) and Westlake Boys High School Headmaster David Ferguson are pictured with copies of the book as they rolled off the Benefitz printing press. Also pictured are Benefitz MD Aidan Bennett (left) and Graphic Designer Eddie van den Broek (right).

The cover design is a real beauty.” Author Tony Vinicombe explains how he really appreciated how Benefitz made his book come to life. “Benefitz did a great job in taking my manuscript and photos and turning them into a fantastic book. Eddie was a very skilled and easy designer to work with. I particularly love the cover he designed. Being able to work with one entity through the design, proofing and printing stages made the entire process very easy. The book looks absolutely fantastic, a great credit to Benefitz.”

And another thing… Just to show off a bit we produced this life-size copy of the cover of the book for the launch. This is now proudly on display in the Westlake Boys’ reception area.

The product was developed to help companies view their business through their customers’ eyes. Customer Radar enables companies to treat every customer as though they were a mystery shopper and actively invite them to share their views. The response rates provide accurate information right down to a location level, which enables more accurate decisions to be made on improving the business. In addition, the accuracy of data and anonymous nature of the customer feedback means the information is trusted throughout the organisations that use it. The part Benefitz is playing is printing large volumes of branded small slips that are used at the point of purchase to prompt the feedback. Each of these slips has a unique code that the customer providing the feedback uses when responding via the Customer Radar website. This coding is done via a database in conjunction with Benefitz state-of-the-art XMPIE variable data software. The printing is done on Benefitz volume offset and digital printing machinery.

CUsTOMER RADAR HElPs MUffin BREAK Win CUsTOMER sATisfACTiOn AWARD The New Zealand wide cafe chain, Muffin Break, have been acknowledged as providing the best customer service in coffee shops in New Zealand by Roy Morgan Research, having been awarded “Coffee Shop of the Year, 2011”. The award actually means that Muffin Break can lay claim to providing the best customer service in their industry for 2011. We all know it’s a tough market and we’re pretty fussy when it comes to criticising coffee shop customer service. Garry Croft, General Manager of Foodco NZ, the owners of the Muffin Break franchise, has credited Customer Radar as playing a key part in their success, “Customer Radar sharpened our focus on our service dynamics”. The ability to measure customer satisfaction levels and be able to see the results live allowed all Muffin Break stores to see where they could improve. The award is the result of Muffin Break management committing to making Customer Service a point of difference in a highly competitive industry. They committed to a programme of measurement and training that has become the Muffin Break way and continues to keep customer service as a key focus. Please join us in congratulating each and every one of Muffin Break’s employees, management and leaders in achieving this level of recognition for clearly, a job well done! BP RAPiDlY COllECTing liVE CUsTOMER fEEDBACK liKE nEVER BEfORE BP launched Customer Radar nationwide across all their company owned stores in April of this year. Every BP Connect customer had the opportunity to provide feedback on their in-store experience enabling all outlets to see how they are delivering on their customers’ experiences in real time. With a new innovation from Customer Radar, BP can see live trending issues from the data, which means they can track and manage issues and opportunities as they happen. After trialling Customer Radar in 5 stores, the full roll out across the company’s BP Connect stations has presented BP with an opportunity to gather more customer feedback than they have ever had in every store. The high response rate provides BP with accurate data and a low margin of error in every store, allowing them to confidently use the data for benchmarking customer experience and managing performance improvement every day of the week. To find out more about Customer Radar go to www.customerradar.com or call 09 376 5000

Benefitz People

Dallas Bennett Dallas is a director and shareholder of Benefitz. He joined the business a couple of years after it was started by Aidan, his brother, in the late ‘80s. The business is now in its 25th year which means Dallas has over two decades of experience in the industry. As well as assisting Aidan with managing the business, Dallas loves ‘delivering’ for his wide range of customers – some of whom he has been working with for the best part of two decades. He is married to Ulla (who also works in the business on Channel Magazine), they have a daughter Ella (20) and a son Taylor (16). Their home is in Takapuna. We twisted his arm to answer these questions for us... Q: What did you do before you started with Aidan at Benefitz? Dallas: I did one year of an engineering course before moving into sail making with a company called Lidgard Sails. I completed an apprenticeship in sail making before moving into Sales. I then went sailing all over the world, mainly match racing with Chris Dickson, and also spent a period looking after and maintaining high performance keelers. I did a year or two of boat building along the way as well. Q: You had some success as an international sailor as well? D: Yes, I was fortunate to be part of Chris Dickson’s match racing crew during a period when he was one of the hottest sailors in the world. I was his mainsheet trimmer. We won the World Match racing title as well as the Admiral’s Cup. I still love sailing now, for enjoyment mainly, although every now and then I get invited to do a regatta in some exotic place and it is hard to say no. Last year it was Sardinia in Italy. Q: What made you give all that up to move into the design, advertising and printing business? D: The nomadic lifestyle of an international sailor was more suited to being a single person. I had met Ulla and decided it was time to settle down and have a family. Aidan had started Benefitz and needed some help and asked me to join him. 23 years later I am still here! Q: You must have seen many changes in the industry? D: Yes, one of my first roles with the business was to get us into what was called desktop publishing back then. I think our first machine was called a MacPlus and I was the first Mac Operator for Benefitz. Back

Dallas and Ulla Bennett.

then, none of our customers had the capability to do computer graphics so we did it all for them. Times have certainly changed and the change has never been faster than it is right now. The great thing is we still have relationships with customers that were with us in those early days. Q: What do you love about working at Benefitz? D: I love the fact that every day is different. We are in a vibrant industry and have such a diverse offering so it is hard to get bored! We have a great team of people and a very good business culture – so Benefitz is a fun place to work as well. Q: Benefitz has continued to grow despite massive change in the industry and pretty soft economic times. What has made Benefitz the success it has been? D: We have a customer focus which delivers the solution and the service. Q: Who is the sports person you admire the most for their achievements? D: Russell Coutts – He is a total professional and the next America’s Cup will be a sporting spectacular. Q: Tell us a few of your favourite things: D: Food – Steak, eggs and chips, and lamb roasts; Drink – beer and bourbon; Sport – Yachting, golf, surfing; Holiday spot in NZ – Omaha; Holiday spot overseas – Hawaii and Cabo San Lucas; Thing to relax – going Surfing and watching rugby and golf; Sports Team – Love watching the mighty All Blacks! Q: Complete the following... in my next life i’m going to come back as a... D: A stock market and foreign exchange analyst/ investor.
