Benefitz People

Reflecting on

25 YEARS...

As Benefitz celebrates 25 years of business, founder and managing director Aidan Bennett reflected on the two and a half decades of business... How did the name come about? I needed to register the business very quickly so had to come up with a name. Being a good advertising man one of my key words was benefits. They are a key ingredient in effective advertising. So it was a spur of the moment thing really. I decided to combine my surname with this key advertising ingredient. And it stuck.

Ever any thoughts about changing the name? No, I am a firm believer in consistency. It is a key ingredient for success in business and very important when building and maintaining a brand. For that reason I have never contemplated any

name change and have only ever tweaked the brand slightly over the years. It has evolved, but is very similar in style to what it started out like in 1988. Now very identifiable on our vehicles!

Why so many vehicles? We have a big team who need to get around! They are a great promotional tool for our business. I am staggered at the amount of people who don’t necessarily understand what we do but they have seen our vehicles! They are great for our business.

Robert Johnson

BENEFITZ PEOPLE

RJ: Most everything, I wake every morning excited and happy to be going to work. Are you a Future Thinker? RJ: I was yesterday. How did you get your big break on the Benefitz team? RJ: Right place, right time – 23 years ago! Do you have a favourite memory of working at Benefitz? RJ: Finally becoming one of the team. What has been the best Christmas Party? RJ: The Amazing race, our team won. Why has Benefitz stood the test of time? RJ: Great values, and basically a great bunch of people, always investing in the latest technology.

But am also very excited to watch the Uvistar Pro8 5 Metre Machine churn though another Billboard campaign. Why should people choose Benefitz? What is the longest project you have been doing? Way back, just after I started the business, I came up with the idea to produce generic golf scorecards for golf clubs. We will celebrate 25 years of doing this in the very near future. A large number of clubs have been using our score cards the whole time.

What have been the milestones along the way? The daunting decision to leave permanent employment and start the business was obviously a big moment. My brother Dallas joining me in the business about two years after I started was a thrill. Looking back getting our first Apple Mac was a highlight as well (we have been a Mac shop ever since). Getting into print manufacturing in the mid to late 90s was also a milestone. Formalising our partnership that now involves myself, and fellow directors Dallas, Mike Nolan and Robert Johnson was also a great move. Diversifying into Web Development (a decade ago), then grand format printing and signage (2005) were also good moves for our business. Lately, launching Channel Magazine three years ago has also proved to be very satisfying.

Mike Nolan.

Mike Nolan Director

Mike is a Director of Benefitz. He joined the business around 20 years ago as an office junior and then worked his way through most areas to become one of the best Account Directors in the business. He became a shareholder and director in 1999. What do you love about working at Benefitz MN: The reputation that Benefitz has created in the market place with new technology and the people that work at Benefitz. Overall it’s a fun environment. Are you a Future Thinker? MN: Yes I feel I am as I have played a part in key decisions made and strategy for over a decade. How did you get your big break on the Benefitz team? MN: I have to credit Aidan and Dallas with that. I worked at a company along side Benefitz 20 plus years ago and was offered a role with Benefitz and the rest is history! Do you have a favourite memory of working at Benefitz? MN: Becoming a shareholder of Benefitz. What has been the best Christmas Party? MN: There’s been a few, however my favourite party was the boating and jet ski day on Auckland Harbour or the Waiheke Island scootering day. Why has Benefitz stood the test of time? MN: We have a fantastic working culture, solid client base and are not scared to invest in a wide range of new technology – keeping up with latest trends and ideas. What piece of new technology excites you the most? MN: The new 3.2 Vutek EFi Flatbed Printing Machine for me. This is a game changer in the print to substrate market. Why should people choose Benefitz? MN: Because of three main factors – Honest and reliable; Technology front runners; Experienced and able to think outside the square to get the job done correctly and effectively.

Volume B2 Sheetfed Inkjet Printing

FUTURE THINKING: B2 VOLUME INKJET PRINTING

Benefitz looks to the future with new Benefitz has enhanced its reputation as pioneers in the local printing and communications market being the first to introduce volume sheetfed Inkjet printing into New Zealand. The machine – the Screen Truepress JetSX – is the first machine of its type installed in New Zealand or Australia, and only the second in the world. The first of these machines was installed in the UK late in 2012. The unique aspect of the machine is that it uses a more advanced printing system than traditional digital printing, yet is capable of printing high volumes and a sheet-size that is much bigger. The sheet size – referred to as B2 – is 740mm x 530mm. This means that Benefitz will be able to print personalised (or variable) sheets up to this size, also resulting in economies of scale for smaller personalised items due to the fact that more can be printed at once on a sheet. “There is no doubt that the printing landscape is changing and these type of machines are the future,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “Our new Screen Truepress JetSX closes the gap between digital and offset printing even further and offers real advantages for our customers.” Overseas, Inkjet is rapidly becoming a serious alternative to offset production for a wide range of applications. The Benefitz Truepress JetSX uses a single pass inkjet head unit and has a feeder and delivery system very similar to that of an offset press. The machine can print a sheet one side (simplex),

or two sides (duplex). Due to the Screen Truepress JetSX’s unique inkjet technology, Benefitz Truepress JetSX will print on standard offset papers – uncoated or coated/gloss – as well as much thicker stocks than is the case on traditional digital printing machines. “As well as advantages in the sheet size, the new Truepress JetSX also enables us to print very thick card, so it opens up opportunities in the packaging market,” adds Aidan Bennett. “And this can obviously be variable data or personalised packaging as every sheet can be different.” The machine complements the fact that Benefitz is one of New Zealand’s leading exponents of Personalised Printing – or printing unique items from databases. “We have invested heavily in this area of our

technology business,” says Aidan Bennett. “Our powerful solution is achieved by pairing the magical XMPIE Personal Effect software with our printing technology. XMPIE is a product of FujiXerox, who we are also partnering with to install this new Screen Truepress JetSX machine.” Aidan and Dallas Bennett of Benefitz travelled to Japan earlier this year to view the Screen Truepress JetSX first hand at the Screen Technology Centre in Tokyo and were impressed with its capability. “There is a school of thought that you are better to stand back and watch this type of new technology before jumping in,” said Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett just after the decision had been made. “But we have always been leaders, rather than followers, and this was a great opportunity to extend our partnership with FujiXerox and Fujifilm and we are excited about the growth this will bring to our business. We have grown as a business during tough economic times largely due to our innovation and future thinking and we are confident that this will continue that trend. The neat thing is every time we introduce these types of new technologies we improve our environmental performance as well which is very important to our customers.”

• The special characteristics of the fast-drying ink means that the Truepress Jet SX can print on to most offset stocks including gloss papers and boards. • Perfecting as standard gives the freedom to print simplex or duplex sheets as required in one pass • Handles range of sheet sizes down to A4 and up to B2 (530 x 740mm, image max 520 x 730mm). • Can print on paper/card stocks up to 0.6mm thick. • High-precision inkjet printheads jet a specially developed water-based pigment ink at 1,440 x 1,440 dpi to produce text and images of a quality to rival offset. Because of the ink’s unique properties, it dries almost instantly, with the help of hot air driers built into the machine. • Features a precision vacuum flat-bed paper transport system with registration accuracy equivalent to offset. Paper is kept flat throughout printing and this means that jetting is always from the optimum vertical position. • Flexibility to produce many standard and personalised products, such as folders, brochures, posters, book covers, calendars, photobooks, greetings cards etc. • Driven by Screen’s new EQUIOS digital front end which features variable data capability, imposition and new screening algorithms developed specially for inkjet. • Easy to use with zero make ready. • Easy touch panel operation automatically handled by EQUIOS while the operator simply enters the paper type on the press panel and all of the appropriate settings are automatically applied with a profile. • No make-ready or CTP saves on time and plate costs.

And another thing… Due to the inkjet process – as opposed to toner – the printed images are much more robust, as durable as offset inks. Laminate adheres to the printed sheet in a much better way as well.

This is the first machine of this kind installed in the local market. It was first launched at the DRUPA print show in Germany in mid-2012. The machine is made in Israel by Mattan and marketed locally in partnership with Fujifilm. “What we like about the machine is its versatility,” explained Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett during April, shortly after the decision had been made to move from the older HP machinery to the Uvistar Pro8. “It can print billboard skins and banners very quickly in the four colour mode, then in approximately five minutes can be switched to the eight colour option and be capable of printing high quality items suitable for instore point of sale. The system uses two cameras which measure the print registration at every registration mark ensuring that the back-up is very accurate and guesswork is completely eliminated.” A feature of the Uvistar Pro8 is the Parallel Drop Size

(PDS) technology. This is a clever software algorithm that enables jetting within the same print pass of both small and large droplets without any reduction in print speed. The use of the small droplets helps to smooth images which if viewed close up may otherwise appear grainy. Other new features on the Uvistar Pro8 are totally new software and a touch screen interface which has an intuitive icon display to operate the printer – meaning onboard help support, which guides the operator through the actions needed to resolve any issues, eliminating downtime.

And another thing… As well as printing flexible materials in very quick time the Benefitz Uvistar Pro8 can be converted to print rigid flat sheets. A great back-up to our Vutek EFI LED flatbed machine.

Small Format Digital Printing

A key ingredient of the Benefitz printing operation

XEROX COLOUR 1000 PRESS The Xerox Colour 1000 SRA3 digital Press is a key ingredient of the Benefitz printing operation. The combination of this press, the iGen4, the new JetSX B2 Inkjet and the Komori and Heidleberg offset machines means that Benefitz has the most powerful digital and volume printing offering in the local market.

The Xerox Colour 1000 Press contains the latest technological advances, which highlight the improvements in dry ink and machine structure that further increases our ability to produce digital printed items much closer to offset printing quality. One of the most significant advancements is the the Colour 1000 “low melt” EA (Emulsion Aggregation) Dry Ink technology uses no fuser oil, giving a smooth offset like finish. Chemically grown, its small, consistent particles produce great quality with less EA dry ink, for smooth transitions. The unique properties of EA Dry Ink are also environmentally friendly. “The print finish with the Colour 1000 really compliments the matt toner that we use in our iGen4 Press,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “This gives us the versatility of transferring projects between our machinery depending on the specific

finish the customer is looking for. The added advantage of being able to do an ‘overgloss-style finish’ has also proven to be popular with our customers.” Due to the low melting temperature of the new dry ink and the new transfer and fusing technology, Clear Dry ink also provides a smoother matte finish with stronger colour consistency on textured stocks. Clear dry ink not only prints well on textured stock but it has the ability to create its own texture, from a two-dimensional page to a threedimensional image. The Colour 1000 Press prints the ink on to a specific section of an image and then when re-printed numerous times, the section is raised without any discolouration or major visible difference to the image. A change is only noticed when the image is touched. For example, consider the texture of a basketball: raised and bumpy.

Using dry ink, the Colour 1000 Press can create that same texture by applying the ink in a pattern and raising sections of the image, providing a tactile sensation. This is the way that the overgloss effect is achieved. As well as the advancement with Clear Dry ink, the Colour 1000 Press has a 2400 x 2400 dpi resolution from the patented laser technology, with 5,760,000 addressable dots. This ensures exceptional image

quality and fine detail for smooth colour sweeps and crisp text. “The Colour 1000 provides real advantages for us in terms of quality,” adds Dallas Bennett. “It’s a great machine on its own, but for us the combination with all our other presses is a very good one. They complement one another nicely and provide us with very significant press power in the digital and volume printing space.”

And another thing… The combination of this Colour 1000 Press and the iGEN4 Press is a very powerful one in the small format digital area. Throw in the options of our JetSX B2 Inkjet and Komori and Heidelberg GTO Volume Offset Presses and we believe we have all the bases covered!

IGEN4 DIGITAL PRESS A real workhorse with bigger sheet size and As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to technology, Benefitz invested in two significant enhancements to its Xerox iGen4 Press. These include an upgrade to increase the print size capability and a change to printing with matte toner to optimise quality. A key driver in our decision to install the Xerox iGen4 Press – the most powerful digital production press available – were the advancements in technology, its environmental qualities and a whole range of advantages the machine offered, providing us with a real edge in the market. This was extended even further by increasing the print size capability – to a sheet size of 371mm x 660mm, meaning that we can now print six page A4 gatefold digitally. Benefitz Print Production Specialist Brent ‘Mop’ Moffat explains the advantages of the matte over the standard toner. “The print is closer to the print achieved from offset printing, where as in the past the iGen4 print had a

definite glossy look to it. There is a greater uniformity of the print, especially in prints that are a screen (not solid coverage). It appears that there is a much less streaky look. I also think that the toner adheres to the paper better and it is less likely to scratch or scuff off. Skin tones also appear more natural.” “This is a serious piece of kit that just chews through all sorts of digital printing projects very quickly and costeffectively,” adds Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “The fact that it prints on a wider range of stocks, has the added qualities of the matte toner, and the large 371mm x 660mm sheet size – means it is a very valuable tool for us. The new Screen JetSX, that prints an even bigger sheet size, will certainly take some work away from the iGen4, but there are still many jobs that it is perfectly suited for. It has been a great machine for us since we installed it two to three years ago.” KEY QUALITIES AND BENEFITS OF XEROX IGEN4… Large Sheet Size – 371mm x 660mm Auto Density Control – Automatically detects and

eliminates density variations and streaks, while the press is running. Streaks are inherent in most printing processes and often require operator intervention to resolve. With this new component, streaks are eliminated automatically. Carrier Dispensing System – New method of combining dry ink and carrier - in place of traditional developer that yields consistent colour uniformity from the first print to the last, and from job to job. High Definition Linearisation – Results in better production of neutral greys and highlight shadows. It also improves photo smoothness, especially in faces,

while maintaining sharp background details. Advanced Colour Profiling – Innovation that enables greater colour consistency and realism in objects such as faces and skies. This tool automatically adjusts colours to closely match offset printing standards in minutes. High-speed Inline Spectrophotometer – Automatically creates colour samples on target sheets, registers them for accuracy, processes the data and takes the appropriate action to adjust the press. The results are offset and photo image quality, along with spot colour accuracy.

And another thing… Benefitz has worked in partnership with Fuji Xerox for 17 years. A strength of our business is consistency and this is achieved through maintaining long term relationships. In this case our team know how the Xerox machinery works inside-out. The result is high quality and cost-effective digital printing solutions for our customers.

SH: The pace and variety - no two days are ever the same. Are you a Future Thinker? SH: Yes, I’m always looking for new and better ways of doing things. How did you get your big break on the Benefitz team? SH: I was the first employee of the sign shop, being recommended by a friend who worked at Benefitz at the time. Do you have a favourite memory of working at Benefitz? SH: Meeting my now wife who worked for a customer! What has been the best Christmas Party? SH: Amazing Race a couple of years back. Why has Benefitz stood the test of time? SH: We invest heavily in the future, never stand still and are a key component of the North Shore community. What piece of new technology excites you the most? SH: The big, new router in the sign shop is pretty impressive. Why should people choose Benefitz? SH: We’re competitive, efficient and reliable.

BENEFITZ CNC ROUTER How did we cope without it? The Tekcel Enduro CNC Router, installed at the Benefitz sign shop in 2012, has been a great addition for the Benefitz business. This machine – the first of its type in New Zealand – was purchased from Tekcel New Zealand agents Blue Print Imaging. The Tekcel Enduro is a powerful CNC Router designed for companies looking for quality and accuracy. Its powerful 3.8kW or 8kW Spindle will router through a wide range of materials with ease and the automatic tool changing system makes multi-tool jobs very easy. “Since the router was commissioned it has opened up a whole range of opportunities for us,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett, who visited Australia to view one of the machines in action before the decision was made to purchase. “We are now able to do all of the cutting jobs inhouse that we once outsourced, such as 3D lettering etc., and the machine is so versatile that we are discovering new things it can do every day. This is a serious CNC Router that is used overseas by cabinet makers, shopfitters and joiners as well as sign makers.” “It does everything you want it to do, and more. It can crease and cut and it heavily supports substrates that come off our flatbed digital printing machinery.

It can process card, corflute, stainless steel. All the substrates that, nine times out of 10 are not that easy to cut. It is accurate. For instance, when a sheet feeds through slightly off-square, the router will still cut and follow the correct line. It has a camera that will pick up its point and cut it in the correct place.” Boasting digital servo motors and ball leadscrews on all axis, the Benefitz Tekcel Enduro offers accurate cutting and superb repeatability. The automatic tool length sensor ensures cutting depths are accurate and with user friendly controls means operation is relatively easy.

The Detail… Benefitz Tekcel Enduro CNC Router:- Cutting area – 2500mm x 1540mm; Maximum Cutting Speed – 24 Metres per Minute; Positioning Speed – 24 Metres per Minute; Maximum Material Thickness – 120mm. Benefitz Boom Lift Truck makes it easy! The team at Benefitz not only design and produce signage, we have the best equipment to install it as well. A key tool for the signage team is the Benefitz Hino Truck, equipped with a 15 metre Snorkel and Elevating Work Platform. This vehicle, purchased brand new in 2012, enables us to install signage and big images more efficiently. The boom extends so work can be carried out at a height of up to 15.80 metres. The fibreglass basket floor extends to 13.80 metres. The basket can carry two people up to a safe total working load of 200kg. The boom is powered by a Honda petrol engine. The Hino 300 truck is powered by a four litre turbo-charged engine. “We have been involved in the installation of our large images that we print for many years,” explains Benefitz Director Mike Nolan. “To have our own boom-lift truck has become a necessity due to the growth in this part of our business. We looked at second-hand options but decided that a brand new vehicle was the most desirable due to safety and technology considerations. And of course it had to be black.” Since the truck was introduced it has helped with the installation on a huge number projects undertaken for customers by Benefitz. The truck was supplied to Benefitz by Hino Distributors (NZ) Ltd and the boom-lift by ‘Snorkel’ based in Levin.

FUSION YEAR BOOKS In keeping with our ‘Future Thinkers’ strapline Benefitz introduced the innovative Fusion School Yearbook System into the New Zealand market in late 2012. This is an innovative system, first developed in Australia, that allows schools to create their own yearbooks online and then have them printed and bound in high quality by Benefitz.

With Fusion, Benefitz makes School Yearbooks very easy... Fusion has developed this innovative “Online to Print” System over five years and it is now used by hundreds of schools in Australia. Benefitz have been successful in introducing it into New Zealand with a number of schools using it over the past 12 months. So how does the Fusion Yearbook System work? • The system completely removes the need for schools to invest in expensive graphics software to produce the finished artwork for the Yearbook. The artwork is totally produced online using the Fusion Web-based Platform that has been cleverly developed and continues to be refined. • The school can assign its Yearbook Coordinator as the “Adminstrator” of the system with simple password access. Then access can be provided to others who can make contributions to specific aspects of each yearbook. For example, each Student can personally upload their own information to the Yearbook. • Like traditional graphics software the Fusion Yearbook System allows users to be creative with the book. The difference is that it is much easier to learn and operate. Photos and images can be uploaded and positioned very easily.

• If the school starts early in the year, the Yearbook content can be compiled during the year, eliminating most of the “rush” usually involved in getting it produced towards the end of the year. What costs are involved in using the Fusion Yearbook System? • The costs of using the Fusion Yearbook System are no more than producing the yearbook by contracting somebody to design and produce the artwork for the book and then contracting a printer to print it. • Benefitz is providing each school with the opportunity to use the Fusion Web-based Platform to design and compile the content for the yearbook and will then print the yearbook from a pdf file generated by the system once it is completed. • It is very easy for the school. They receive one invoice for the total production of the book, inclusive of the use of the Fusion Web-based Platform. • This cost includes any technical support needed for the school when using the online system. Project Profile

25 YEARS OF G LF Scorecards This year Benefitz is celebrating its 25th year of producing score cards for golf clubs throughout New Zealand. During this time it is estimated we have printed up to 65 million score cards. The company first got into producing these score cards back in 1988 when Managing Director Aidan Bennett spotted an opportunity to enhance the quality of the score cards being used by golfers at each club. “I was playing golf one day and was scoring on this shabby single colour card and it dawned on me that score cards could become a powerful promotional vehicle,” explains Aidan Bennett. “So I set about designing an attractive generic score card that could be rolled out across a number of clubs. I approached AMP, who were big sponsors of golf back then, and they loved the concept. With 100% sponsorship from

AMP, we rolled the new full colour Benefitz score cards out across virtually all of the Auckland golf clubs. The concept was then picked up by AMP’s network of agents throughout New Zealand and it went nationwide.” By the early ‘90s Benefitz was responsible for the printing of score cards for over 300 golf clubs throughout the country. From Kaitaia in the north to Bluff in the south. “After quite a few years of sponsorship AMP decided to pull back from what they were spending and we reverted to printing directly for the clubs,” adds Aidan Bennett. “Many of the AMP agents stayed involved and we still have some involved today. But over the last 10-15 years we have been essentially printing for the individual clubs and their locally sourced sponsors and advertisers.” The larger golf clubs in New Zealand use up to 100,000 score cards a year. An average club will use 30,000 to 40,000. Benefitz still prints golf score cards for over 200

The company also works closely as a preferred print partner for DotGolf, a company which has developed an innovative score card system that allows specific details of the individual player to be laser printed at the golf clubs. Benefitz prints most of these cards colour on one side and the laser printing is done on the other side at the clubs. “The introduction of our B2 JetSX Volume Inkjet press has recently provided us with real flexibility when printing these score cards,” explains Aidan Bennett. “Previously we printed all these score cards

monthly, in one run, on our Komori press. Now, we have the flexibility to print them virtually on demand just as economically.” The longevity of the project is something that Aidan Bennett is very proud of. “To be still going strong in this golf market after 25 years is something that warms my heart,” says Aidan. “This type of longevity with many customers and different projects is what has laid the foundations for the business we have today at Benefitz.” Visit: www.benefitz.co.nz/golfcards

The decision to choose Mimaki and their New Zealand supplier Blue Print proved to be an inspired choice around six years ago. Since that time the machinery has been constantly upgraded as new technology has come on-stream, with improvements being made in both quality and speed. The four Benefitz Mimaki printing machines include a 3.2 metre wide grand format printing machine and three 1.6 metre wide large format printing machines. We also have a Mimaki vinyl cutter. The printing machines all print at up to 1440dpi which is virtually photo-quality resolution. “We understand that our original Mimaki 1.6 JV5 was the busiest Mimaki machine in the southern hemisphere,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “Apparently this was gauged from the ink usage of the machine. So it is fair to say that the machine was pretty well worn out when we replaced it around 18 months to two years ago. We decided to replace that machine with two machines. Now the extra machine is flat out as well.” Benefitz is one of New Zealand’s leading large format printing operations. We print point of sale and promotional

For a great deal of these projects we use one of our four state-of-the-art Mimaki machines. “We work closely with the brand’s New Zealand agents Blue Print Imaging to ensure these machines deliver to their maximum,” adds Dallas Bennett. “We are thrilled with what we have achieved with our Mimakis. They have certainly played a big part in our success. “Over the last decade we have been the big movers in producing large images for display, event and

architectural applications. This Mimaki machinery has taken the possibilities to a completely new level. Throw in the print quality of our five metres wide Uvistar 8-colour machine and Vutek EFI LED Flatbed and we have the best large and grand format solutions in the country by far.”

We are thrilled with what we have achieved with our Mimakis. They have certainly played a big part in our success.

And another thing… A big reason for choosing Mimaki was the lower consumable costs which have resulted in more favourable pricing for our customers. At the time of commissioning the cost of Mimaki inks from Blueprint Imaging was 40% less per square metre than the ink provided by a previous supplier for the machines they superseded.

buckling or head strikes, adding significantly to its portfolio of applications. Additionally, the environmental benefits mean that less energy is required, with the extra benefit of the lamps having a longer life span. “There is the benefit that the LED curing lamps don’t need to warm up before we use the printer, speeding up set-up times,” says Benefitz Director Mike Nolan. “As well as being able to handle very sensitive substrates, the GS3250LX will both increase our capacity while at the same time further reduce our impact on the environment through responsible choices in equipment and supplies. It also offers a leap forward in speed – being two times faster – and quality, over the machinery it has replaced.” The Benefitz EFI VUTEk GS3250LX Flatbed Printer boasts innovative digital advancements with significant increase in production speed combined with true 1,000 DPI print capability. This enables Benefitz to quickly achieve consistent print photo-quality images, crisp text, vibrant colours and advanced three-layer white ink printing on an extended range of supported substrates. VUTEk’s innovative LED ink curing technology delivers high quality and high adhesion in order to maximise the visual allure of promotional materials, including signage, retail POS, exhibition, display, billboards

and fleet graphics. “We have taken some time to find the right machine that will future proof our business in this flatbed space,” adds Mike Nolan. “And we feel we have certainly found it with this innovative new machine. It is a thrill that we are once again leading the way by being the first to adopt the LED ‘cool cure’ technology in the New Zealand market.” At 3.2 metres in print width capability, the machine also provides the perfect back-up for the Benefitz UviStar Pro8 5 metres wide billboard machine. Both machines also offer the flexibility of printing roll-to-roll or as flatbed machines. For more information contact the Benefitz team.

Prints personalised (or variable) sheets up to this size, also resulting in economies of scale for smaller personalised items due to the fact that more can be printed at once on a sheet. Prints on standard offset papers – uncoated or coated/gloss – as well as much thicker stocks (up to 0.6mm). So it opens up opportunities in the packaging market and personalised packaging.

Komori Nl528 Offset 20,000 to 500,000!

The true workhorse in our Volume Offset Printing area, the Komori NL528 press can print a sheet size of up to 720 x 510mm and 15,000 sheets per hour. Its versatility doesn’t stop there. The Komori has five print units so can print up to 5 colours in one pass. That can be cyan, magenta, yellow and black plus a special colour or an overgloss or seal. We purchased the machine brand new in 2005 from Komori agents in New Zealand, CPI Graphics, and it hasn’t missed a beat.

Komori Spica 529P Offset 20,000 – 500,000!

The newer cousin of the NL528, the Komori Spica press offers the latest in automation features to shorten makeready, reduce costs and lighten the workload for operators. The Komori press features a precision ink key system for outstanding print quality. Prints up to 13,000 sheets per hour with a maximum sheet size of 530 x 750mm.

Heidelberg GTO52

Our GTO52 is a 2-colour printing machine with a maximum sheet size of SRA3.

And another thing… At Benefitz we have also invested over $200,000 on the world’s best Personalised Printing (or Variable Data) software and server. PERSONALISED COMMUNICATIONS With Benefitz clever XMPie Software With the installation of the JetSX B2 Inkjet printing press the Benefitz personalised communications offering just became more powerful. Benefitz offering combines clever software (XMPIE) with both print and online resources to offer the best all round personalised marketing solutions in the country. “With all these resources at our finger tips we are able to provide personalised solutions for both print and online,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “We have the skill and we have invested heavily in the technology – software and machinery – to ensure we have all the bases covered.” Two ongoing examples of this at work is with the Customer Radar project for Digital Dynamite and a Home Insurance Renewal project for leading insurer Aon. Customer Radar Benefitz variable data printing capability is playing a part in helping to deliver an innovative customer feedback programme, called Customer Radar, developed by Auckland technology company Digital Dynamite. Customer Radar uses mobile technology to give your customers an anonymous voice to express compliments, complaints and insights for improvement based on their real-time experience. In addition, it provides an avenue for businesses to manage any concerns quickly and efficiently, to retain future business. The product was developed to help companies view their business through their customers’ eyes. Customer Radar enables companies to treat every customer as though they were a mystery shopper and actively invite them to share their views. The response rates provide accurate information right down to a location level, which enables more accurate decisions

to be made on improving the business. In addition, the accuracy of data and anonymous nature of the customer feedback means the information is trusted throughout the organisations that use it. The part Benefitz is playing is printing large volumes of branded small slips that are used at the point of purchase to prompt the feedback. Each of these slips has a unique code that the customer providing the feedback uses when responding via the Customer Radar website. This coding is done via a database in conjunction with Benefitz state-of-the-art XMPIE variable data software. The printing is done on Benefitz volume offset and digital printing machinery. To find out more about Customer Radar go to www.customerradar.com or call 09 376 5000. Aon Home Insurance Renewal With major changes in the home insurance renewal process, Aon, New Zealand’s leading insurance broker, has been challenged with communicating with thousands of customers and providing them with information about their properties. The challenge was that some customers may have multiple properties covered under one facility. Benefitz has worked with Aon to develop a system where each customer can receive a personalised single document that has information on all their properties, enabling them to easily provide renewal information around the new requirements. The Benefitz web development team have written a script that when combined with the XMPIE software can cater for customers who have one property or those with up to 20 properties. These are all printed on the flyer, irrespective of how many properties each customer has.

Online Print Personalisation Benefitz customers now have the ability to customise and order their print and direct marketing requirements via the web using the XMPIE uStore facility. Standard products such as business cards and letterheads, along with more advanced items like flyers, posters and direct mail campaigns can all be set up and personalised online, with live proof previews and print specifications built-in to streamline the process from start to finish. The Benefitz Online Ordering system can suit almost any design, with product templates custom built to give the customer a tailor made and user friendly ordering experience. Once an order is placed, the print ready file is delivered directly to the Benefitz in-house prepress workflow, and the user is kept up to date with email confirmations and live delivery tracking. Empowering customers to personalise and manage their print online makes the whole process quick and easy - try it for yourself by visiting our free demo site at http://ustoredemo.benefitz.co.nz

THE FACTS... AT Benefitz we have invested in the world’s leading variable data printing (VDP) software - XMPie. XMPie was founded with a vision to integrate the world of print and electronic media, and make it easier for customers to create and produce personalised communications. With XMPie solutions, effective personalised communication becomes not only a high response rate proposition, but also a cost-effective business strategy with attractive return on investment. XMPie is a growing software business unit of Xerox. Benefitz is a key VDP Certified Partner of Fuji Xerox in New Zealand and as such can call on the huge resource of this world-wide leader in digital printing and related services. In simple terms, with XMPie, Benefitz can take files that have been designed/created in Adobe InDesign, combine this with virtually any database, and produce personalised printing. The impact is not just limited to print. XMPie enables your promotion to extend to web, email or text messaging. This is also an excellent tool for simple variable requirements such as numbering and unique coding of digitally printed items. BENEFITZ XMPIE SOFTWARE CONSISTS OF FIVE ELEMENTS… uPlan: This is the planner. Used to define the business “rules” for each campaign. The WhoWhat-Why logic that defines the target audience and the variable offers. uCreate: This is the design component, a plug-in for InDesign for print and for web-design software. uImage: This enables variable items to extend to those created in Photoshop. A powerful tool that has extended the creative capabilities of XMPie. uProduce: This is the production dashboard which merges design, data and business logic from a central server to any output format you choose. You can view PDF or HTML proofs, and generate full-colour, fully variable one-to-one communications – for print, email, web and mobile. uStore: This allows service providers, creative agencies and corporate marketing departments to quickly build e-commerce-enabled stores for ordering everything.

DESIGN, PRODUCTION, INSTALLATION... New restaurant project shows off Benefitz all round capability Benefitz all round design, print and signage capability has played a big part in the name and theme change of prominent Ponsonby restaurant GPK to become Mekong Baby. The new restaurant, taking a modern Southeast Asian theme, was launched in early July. David Cooper. Benefitz Senior Designer David Cooper worked closely with restaurant owner Dominique Parat to develop the branding for the new restaurant. This included the logo and design elements and devices that flow throughout the restaurant to complete the theme. David Cooper then worked closely with Mark Hobson and his Benefitz signage team to bring the entire project together. For Benefitz the project included all interior and exterior signage – design, production and installation. A feature in the restaurant are large printed graphic images that were created by David Cooper during the design process. These have become feature walls in the restaurant and toilets. Exterior signage included the replacement of existing 30 metre fascia with satin black ACM, vinyl graphics applied to face; entrance lightbox with illuminated logo; under verandah double sided lightbox; external hours and street signs. Interior signage included optically clear printed vinyl applied to all 30 windows with created tree pattern; toilet signs illuminated and toilet

decals applied directly to walls and doors male, female, disabled etc.; upstairs digital wall prints, three types up to 4300mm long. During the design process David Cooper has also created a range of other items that were printed by Benefitz. These included:beverage list; billfolds; business cards; tab cards; gift vouchers; chopstick covers; table reserved signs; coasters; postcards. “The end result is a real credit to Coop’s (David Cooper) design skills and the wide scope of what we are able to produce at Benefitz,” said Benefitz Signage Manager Mark Hobson, after the job was completed. “In addition to the full signage capability being used, a wide range of our printing and finishing machinery was also engaged to produce the various items. We certainly provided the full service to complete the time-critical project that had its challenges.” An early review had this to say about Mekong Baby... “The menu lends itself to being shared so we ordered four “small beginnings” and then a salad followed by a dessert. Without exception every dish was superb. I guess if you have to give the food style a name you would call it South East Asian/Fusion? I am no expert in these matters but it did remind us very much of some of the fine food we ate in Vietnam and Laos.” Mekong Baby: 262 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby. Visit: www.facebook.com/MekongBabyNZ

Benefitz having the experience to do all the design and then print and finish the book also made the project easy and cost-effective for the club.

THE CLUB BY THE LAKE Benefitz produces book for North Shore Squash Club’s 50th Jubilee Benefitz designed and produced a 100 page book that commemorated the 50th jubilee of the North Shore Squash Club. The book, titled “The Club By The Lake”, was written by leading North Shore sports writer Lindsay Knight who has a reputation for producing wellresearched books and this one is no exception. Benefitz senior designer Eddie van den Broek worked closely with both Lindsay Knight and the North Shore Squash Club board members – including President Bob Campton – to ensure that the finished book presented a well-illustrated record of the first 50 years of this popular local sporting organisation. The North Shore Squash Club enjoys a location that really is the envy of many other sporting clubs throughout New Zealand. It is located on the western shores of Lake Pupuke, beside North Shore Hospital. Facing north, the function area and decks of the club enjoys one of the best outlooks on the Shore. The Club By The Lake includes some great articles and photographs. The first chapter covers the first

25 years in some depth. There is also a chapter dedicated to the role the club played in helping to host the 1983 World Mens Champs. A chapter also covers the five national championships that North Shore have hosted (1977, 1981, 1987, 1997 and 2005). There is a chapter dedicated to the second 25 years and one that covers the 16 life members of the club. “We were thrilled with how the book came out,” said North Shore Squash Club president Bob Campton. “Lindsay did a great job in bringing all the content together and Eddie made it look fantastic. Getting all the old photos together was challenging but Eddie really made them look special in the finished printed book. Benefitz having the experience to do all the design and then print and finish the book also made the project easy and cost-effective for the club.” A limited number of copies were printed and sold to attendees of the jubilee celebrations and club members.

for unique school campaign One of Auckland’s leading schools engaged the Benefitz team to create a completely unbranded campaign to reach parents who were considering schooling options for their children. From a brief the Benefitz creative team came up with the concept. Our chief creative thinker Uwe Engbers came up with a range of ideas that excited the customer. They chose “The Big Decision – My First School” concept. Uwe and Benefitz Mixed Media Specialist Ryan McLachlan then set about applying the concept to a range of media solutions. Included in the mix were billboards, bus backs, advertising trailers, DM flyers and print advertising. “The pleasing aspect from our perspective was the fact that this campaign really highlighted all the resources we have as a business,” says

The machine – the JetSX – is the first machine of its type installed in New Zealand or Australia, and only the second in the world. The first of these machines was installed in the UK. The unique aspect of the machine is that it uses a more advanced printing system than traditional digital printing, yet is capable of printing high volumes and a sheet-size that is much bigger.

The Sheet Size • B2 – is 740mm x 530mm. • Benefitz will be able to print personalised (or variable) sheets up to this size, also resulting in economies of scale for smaller personalised items due to the fact that more can be printed at once on a sheet. The Technology • The Benefitz BJetSX uses a single pass inkjet head unit and has a feeder and delivery system very similar to that of an offset press. The machine can print a sheet one side (simplex), or two sides (duplex). High-precision inkjet printheads jet a specially developed water-based pigment ink at 1,440 x 1,440 dpi to produce text and images of a quality to rival offset. Because of the ink’s unique properties, it dries almost instantly, with the help of hot air driers built into the machine. The Stock/Paper • Due to the unique inkjet technology, Benefitz BJetSX will print on standard offset papers – uncoated or coated/gloss – as well as much thicker stocks than is the case on traditional digital printing machines (up to 0.6mm). So it opens up opportunities in the packaging market and personalised packaging.

Benefitz resources behind NZ SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 LAUNCH The Samsung Galaxy S4 was one of the year’s most anticipated world wide product launches and the Benefitz team played a part in the New Zealand roll-out by assisting with a whole range of items. “We are well-suited to such a time-sensitive project with our ability to provide solutions across virtually all requirements,” says Benefitz Director Mike Nolan. “This campaign had just about all our teams and machinery working overtime to meet the launch date.” From supplied base creative Benefitz created print files to produce brochures, sales guides, POS window signage, store gate covers, strut cards and instore posters and banners. These were rolled out in stores such as JB HiFi. The gate covers are a great marketing tool. These are the devices at the entry to the stores which house the product security devices. Benefitz produced fabric gate covers which provided excellent profile for Samsung Galaxy S4. The Samsung Galaxy S4 campaign was produced by Benefitz using all the following

inhouse production resources – Large format printing, flatbed printing, volume offset printing, small format printing and specialist finishing. Installation of many of the items was also carried out by Benefitz in set locations nationwide.

Benefitz helps implement “SKY SPORT SURVIVOR” PROMO Benefitz creative team started the ball rolling with this recent “SKY Sport Survivor” project undertaken for SkyTV. The brief from the customer was the desire to introduce a competition in bars and clubs that would engage with patrons and very importantly be easy to follow. There are lots of keen sporting types among our creatives so it wasn’t difficult to get someone to put their hand up to take on the job. The promo was to involve both the NRL League competition and Super Rugby. Lee Darby of Benefitz designed a striking doublesided “SKY Sport Survivor” poster (720mm x 510mm) to hang in the bars and clubs along with a wall poster entry form. In addition there was a smaller poster that outlined the rules of the popular competition. “The project was a great example of the capability of our creative team,” says Benefitz Account Director Robert Johnson. “Lee and his team did a great job on the creative and the customer was thrilled. We also designed a T-shirt for the promotion.” Over 2200 packs were produced of the promotional items on Benefitz Volume Offset and

Digital Printing Machinery. These were despatched directly to the bars and clubs by Benefitz. The promotion was later extended to two more sets for the All Blacks and ITM Cup.

BENEFITZ PEOPLE

Karen McKinlay (Wearing football pitch costume)

Karen McKinlay - Senior Graphic Designer Karen is a designer and mother who has worked at Benefitz as a Senior Graphic Designer for many years. She is well-known as the ‘life of the party’ at all the Benefitz functions. What do you love about working at Benefitz? KM: Likeable Staff; Occupational Dream; Versatile Management; Exceptional Technology. Are you a Future Thinker? KM: Yes I am, I have to be because I’m getting on a bit and find it hard to remember the past therefore it’s all about the exciting things I look forward to in the future. How did you get your big break on the Benefitz team? KM: Actually I only get a small break because Benefitz allows me flexible hours to be able to collect my three year old son early from daycare. Just one of the accommodating aspects of the Benefitz management. Do you have a favourite memory of working at Benefitz? KM: It was seeing Aidan & Michelle (directors) battling it out on the Karaoke at our Mexican party : ). Seriously, a favourite early memory was to see my first billboard design transformed from a 200mm image on screen to a huge 20m long banner. To see it larger than life (and my whole house) for others to enjoy, makes this job so rewarding! What has been the best Christmas Party? KM: Weeeelllllllllll... show me a fancy dress party and I am as happy as a pig in mud! If there is no theme I’ll still find an outfit fit for the occasion. All of that said, my favourite has to be the Amazing Race that was so well organised and it kept us fit, which had nothing to do with my competitive nature : ). Why has Benefitz stood the test of time? KM: I think that has to come back to ‘Future Thinkers’. We are always ahead of the game when it comes to technology, making it an exciting and innovating place to work. And the family oriented environment creates a humble atmosphere which I’m sure makes our clients feel at ease when dealing with our staff but still receiving a professional result. What piece of new technology excites you the most? KM: Where do I start? Being a designer the new Adobe Creative Cloud software that allows me to access all the latest programmes at home therefore giving me the flexibility to work from home is ideal for a working mum. And then there is the brand new JetSX B2 Volume Inkjet! I have recently been trained in the compatible XMpie technology, which with this machine, will open up new possibilities with personalised printing on a larger scale. And this new larger format machine titillates my passion for packaging with the ability to create designs for smaller print runs. All keeping my working day more exciting. Why should people choose Benefitz? KM: Bazinga (Big Bang!); Entrepreneurs; New Technology; Experts; Forerunners; Innovative; Talented Bunch. New Zealand owned.

2012 North Harbour Club AIMES Awards Winners.

16 Years of support for the

AIMES AWARDS For 16 years Benefitz has been supporting the North Harbour Club with the supply of web design, graphic design, advertising, printing, display and signage. It is a fantastic initiative that fits well with our business. The North Harbour Club – and its annual AIMES Awards – have been around since 1995. Since that time, over $1.4 million has been provided in awards (grants) to young people of the North Harbour region who are deemed to be achieving excellence. These prestigious awards provide the recipients – all North Harbour residents aged 13 to 25 years – with unconditional cash to celebrate their exceptional achievements and a helping hand to the next stage of their promising careers. AIMES winners receive a share of over $100,000 annually. The awards are presented in six categories: The Arts (sponsored by Bruce Mason Centre); IT, Innovation and Science (sponsored by Massey University); Music (sponsored by Albany Toyota); Education (Sponsored by Kristin School) ; Sport (sponsored by AUT Millennium); and Service to the Community (sponsored by ASB). In addition, the BellinghamWallace sponsored Emerging Talent Awards are given to young people with considerable promise in any of the award categories, and are selected as part of the AIMES process. Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett is also a Trustee and Vice President of the North Harbour Club & Charitable Trust. “The North Harbour Club is a unique organisation that many other regions would love to have,” says Aidan. “The ethos of supporting excellence, and helping our brilliant young people achieve their lofty goals, is really very special. You just need to look back at the list of our past winners to understand the impact that the club has made. Many of the high profile winners are sports people, but the club has provided equal support to all the other areas as well – such as musicians, business people, academics, performers,

Future Thinking:

Uvistar Pro8 5-Metre Billboard Printer

For many years Benefitz have been leaders in the local grand format printing market with the ability to print up to five metres wide and any length. This is continuing with the recent installation of a brand new Fujifilm Uvistar Pro8 eight colour five metres wide machine. This is the first machine of this kind installed in the local market. It was first launched at the DRUPA print show in Germany in mid-2012.

The Size • Prints big images – up to 5 metres wide and virtually any length. • Over 300 square metres per hour. The Technology • Can print billboard skins and banners very quickly in the four colour mode. • In approximately 5 minutes can be switched to the 8 colour option, high quality for instore point of sale. • The 8 colour print mode introduces a light colour ink set to great effect. It is capable of matching much closer to spot colour than previous technology. • A feature of the Uvistar Pro8 is the Parallel Drop Size (PDS) technology. This is a clever software algorithm that enables jetting within the same print pass of both small and large droplets without any reduction in print speed. The use of the small droplets helps to smooth images which if viewed close up may otherwise appear grainy. • Automated double side print option. The system uses two cameras which measure the print registration at every registration mark ensuring that the back-up is very accurate. The Substrates • Banner Vinyl • Fabrics • Mesh • Synthetics • Paper • Adhesives • PE
