continued growth and success It is our pleasure to present our latest issue of Benefitz News, packed full of news from Benefitz, as well as projects, initiatives and events we are involved in.

It is our pleasure to present our latest issue of Benefitz News, packed full of news from Benefitz, as well as projects, initiatives and events we are involved in.

It is very pleasing that we have continued to grow as a business over the past 12-18 months. These are challenging times that we trade in, but we continue to work hard, be innovative and deliver for our customers.

While a big part of what we do is printing, as you can see from the features in this issue, the online space is now a significant part of our business. We have a team dedicated to providing a wide range of website and innovative personalised printing solutions that also link with the internet. Combining their skills and knowledge with the full resources of our diverse business is proving valuable for our customers and helping us to future-proof our company. We now develop, create and host some very sophisticated websites. This issue provides some interesting information on this part of our business.

We also continue to invest in technology. Over the past few months we have installed the new Xerox 1000 Digital Press that adds a great deal to our digital printing capability. We have also made a massive investment in computers and software with 19 new Apple Macintosh’s for our design team and over 30 new installations of the latest Adobe software. This is Adobe Creative Suite 5, operating on Apple’s latest system MacOS 10.6 Snow Leopard. We profile these

Channel Magazine has been an exciting project for the Benefitz team over the past year as well. Channel is a magazine (and website) we have conceived specifically for our ‘local’ North Shore community and we are proud of how quickly it has become an integral part of the ‘Shore’. We now produce and distribute over 22,000 copies of Channel magazine monthly. We skite a bit about our new ‘baby’ in this issue.

We also remain very focused on the community through sponsorships, scholarships and other support initiatives. We are fortunate to live and work in one of the best places in the world and as a business we will continue to contribute towards keeping it that way.

PERSONALISED CAMPAIGNS

3D Campaign shows off Benefitz personalised print and web integrated capabilities.

The powerful ability of the Benefitz team to produce innovative one-to-one marketing campaigns was on display recently with a promotion put together for Fuji Xerox New Zealand in Admedia magazine. Fuji Xerox were keen to demonstrate the power of their XMPIE software to advertising people. Benefitz were set the task of creating and implementing the campaign.

3D cover, printed using the Benefitz IGEN4’s large sheet size, was produced for one of Admedia’s 2011 issues and each of the subscribers received their own personalised copy complete with 3D glasses. The Benefitz creative team came up with a temporary new name for the magazine “Adm3dia” which emphasised the 3D part of the promotion. Benefitz designer Ryan McLachlan came up with the overall design and concept.

“This also served as an invitation for these people to go online and register to win a 3D prize pack,” adds Benefitz New Media specialist Dustin Bisschoff.

“They were provided with their own personalised code which provided access to their personalised web page or PURL.” “This Admedia promotion really showed what is possible when combining creativity with our powerful printing resource and the XMPIE software,” adds

Benefitz has made another significant investment in digital printing technology with the installation of the new Xerox Colour 1000 Press. The combination of this new press, with the iGen4 Press, means that Benefitz has the most powerful small format digital printing offering in the local market.

The Xerox Colour 1000 Press contains the latest technological advances, which highlight the improvements in dry ink and machine structure that increases further our ability to produce digital printed items much closer to offset printing quality.

One of the most significant advancements is the Clear Dry ink (overgloss-type) process on the Colour 1000 Press. This works like CMYK dry ink but without the colour pigmentation. Clear Dry ink can be applied

as a flood coat (to the entire page) or selectively applied to the document (spot).

“In simple terms this allows us to spot overgloss or overgloss a digitally printed item at a fraction of the normal cost,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett. “It can also be used to create watermarks and other colourless images to support a design.”

Due to the low melting temperature of the new dry ink and the new transfer and fusing technology, Clear Dry ink also provides a smoother matte finish with stronger colour consistency on textured stocks.

Dry ink not only prints well on textured stock but it has the ability to create its own texture, from a two-dimensional page to a three-dimensional image.

The Colour 1000 Press prints the ink on to a specific section of an image and then when re-printed

Digital Press numerous times the section is raised without any discolouration or major visible difference to the image. A change is only noticed when the image is touched. For example, consider the texture of a basketball: raised and bumpy. Using dry ink, the Colour 1000 Press can create that same texture by applying the ink in a pattern and raising sections of the image, providing a tactile sensation.

Channel Magazine Channel Magazine is North Shore’s Monthly Magazine for news, views, events and people.

The glossy magazine is distributed free to over 18,000 homes and 4,000 businesses on the North Shore. It is also available in cafes and from dump bins in several locations around the North Shore.

“We are thrilled with what we have achieved with this magazine,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “We have taken it from an idea to a strong brand in less than a year and it continues to go from strength to strength. Advertising support has been strong in what has been a pretty soft period for the economy.”

ESSWith the birth of the new Auckland Council (the Super City), Enterprise BUSIN THE MAGAZINE FOR BUSINESSES NORTH OF THE BRIGE North Shore has become part of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development Ltd NORTH SHORE’S BUSINESS MAGAZINE (ATEED). The team at ATEED were keen to launch a new magazine THE ESS and had seen what Benefitz had IN S U B achieved with Channel Magazine.

“It was a thrill to be given LAUNCH ISSUE! the opportunity,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett.

“The key to the whole exercise is FROM THE SHORE TO THE WORLD the strong database of virtually all with some added grunt from the All Blacks the business people on the North Shore held by ATEED. So a quality magazine, with good content was required. We were flattered to be entrusted with the project.

“The final issue of Enterprise was published in February and was 16 pages. So we are thrilled that the first issue of The Business Channel (featuring Sealegs on the cover, OUT & ABOUT ON BUSINESS FEATURE COLUMNS NEWS & VIEWS INSIDE left) was 44 pages and will grow further as business people north 13,250 of the bridge get as excited as we have been about the magazine. The magazine is essentially bi-monthly, with five issues to be produced each year. These will be February, May, July, September and November.”

Over 13,000 copies of The Business Channel are distributed via the strong database and to cafes and business throughout the North Shore region.

A work of art

by Benefitz at Te Papa ďż˝

BENEFITZ recently printed a giant 5 metre by 5 metre banner for the European Masters exhibition held at Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand, in Wellington.

The image was a Half-length figure of a Roman woman in a white tunic and a red cloak, c. 1862-66,

by Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880), oil on canvas.

Spanning the dynamic and transformative years of the 19th and 20th centuries, this exhibition featured 96 works by 70 of the greatest German, French, Spanish, Belgian, Dutch and Swiss masters of the period.

Included are iconic Neoclassical, Realist, Impressionist, and Symbolist works, as well as breathtaking German Expressionist paintings and sculpture.

The massive print gave visitors to Te Papa a largerthan-life viewing of a painting by European master Anselm Feuerbach. The high-quality reproduction of Half-length figure of a Roman woman in a white tunic and a red cloak was printed on the Benefitz HP Scitex XP5300 grand format printer.

Benefitz printed a similar image for the Monet exhibition held at Te Papa. Benefitz is the only company in New Zealand with a machine of this type capable of printing images this size in one piece.

Benefitz has recently invested over $200,000 in the upgrade of Apple computers and the latest software from Adobe for its creative, production and account management team.

"Keeping up with the latest and greatest technologies is a real challenge," says Benefitz Design and Prepress Services Manager Dustin Bisschoff. "We have a large team of graphic designers, mac operators, web developers and account managers. The key to our success is that all these people are proficient users of our main productivity tools - the Adobe Creative Suite. Due to the size of our operation, our software and some hardware had become somewhat fragmented over time, so we needed a way to make sure that everyone got everything they needed.”

So Benefitz made the decision to engage Maclean

Computing whom the company had worked closely with on the implementation of a new telephone and data system. For Maclean’s the project was a sizeable one.

There were 32 work-stations alone at Benefitz using the Adobe Creative Suite. 19 new Apple computers were also required.

“Maclean Computing responded to our shopping list with competitive pricing and an effective plan for how to deploy the software and hardware,” adds Dustin.

"Maclean had a plan to cover all of it. From getting the new machines in, to deploying the new software to our existing machines, to getting the old machines out the door. They already had it covered at the proposal stage."

Helping Sealegs

take on the World

The all round capability is a real strength of the Benefitz business.

The one-stop concept is something that customers love and this has been on display big-time recently with a whole range of work done for Sealegs, the North Shore based amphibious boat manufacturer.

The Sealegs story starts back in the 90s when Milford resident Maurice Bryham had an idea. Even though he lived right on the beach, going boating was still a hassle. Boat ramps, launching, parking the car on busy boating days was a real pain. He had an idea that would eliminate this frustration.

This idea was to develop an amphibious boat.

More than a decade on this idea is going global and Benefitz is thrilled to be playing a part in this success.

Sealegs is focussing on marketing to offshore markets and have signed on as a sponsor of the All Blacks to assist them with these efforts. Benefitz has been designing and producing a whole range of promotional items for this campaign.

Members of the Benefitz creative team have been working closely with Maurice Bryham and Benefitz Director Mike Nolan to create several items.

This design work has included a lovely book/ high-end brochure “The Dream Book”; Point of sale brochures and direct marketing brochures; Press advertisements for local and international publications; Roll-up transportable exhibition stands for use all round the world; New building signage for their local

base and offices in Europe and the United States; Branding to be applied to the actual boats.

“The Dream Book is a very special document which was superbly designed by our team,” says Benefitz Director Mike Nolan. It was embossed, laminated with both perfect bound and case bound versions produced to target the high-end international market.”

“We really appreciate the fact that Benefitz provides a service where we can get the lot done,” says Maurice Bryham of Sealegs. “They have a very good creative team and have invested a great deal in technology that enables them to produce virtually all the promotional aids we need, including printed items, exhibition items and signage. It not only makes the whole process efficient and very easy but also cost-effective.”

This Sealegs campaign produced by Benefitz has included small format digital printing, volume offset printing, large and grand format digital printing, flatbed digital printing and signage installation. A massive 3 metre x 18 metre banner was recently printed and installed by Benefitz at the Sealegs Albany factory.

Benefitz celebrates printing

10 million score cards!

This year Benefitz is celebrating its 23rd year of producing score cards for golf clubs throughout New Zealand. During this time it is estimated we have printed up to 10 million score cards.

The company first got into producing these score cards back in 1988 when Managing Director Aidan Bennett spotted an opportunity to enhance the quality of the score cards being used by golfers at each club.

“I was playing golf one day and was scoring on this shabby single colour card and it dawned on me that score cards could become a powerful promotional vehicle,” explains Aidan Bennett. “So I set about designing an attractive generic score card that could

be rolled out across a number of clubs. I approached AMP, who were big sponsors of golf back then, and they loved the concept. With 100% sponsorship from AMP we rolled the new full colour Benefitz score card out across virtually all of the Auckland golf clubs.

The concept was then picked up by AMP’s network of agents throughout New Zealand and it went nationwide.”

By the early 90s Benefitz was responsible for the printing of score cards for over 300 golf clubs throughout the country. From Kaitaia in the north to Bluff in the south.

“After quite a few years of sponsorship AMP decided to pull back from what they were spending and we reverted to printing directly for the clubs,” adds Aidan Bennett. “Many of the AMP agents stayed involved and we still have some involved today. But over the last decade we have been essentially printing for the individual clubs and their locally sourced sponsors and advertisers.”

Benefitz still prints golf score cards for over 200 clubs from throughout the country. The company also works closely as a preferred print partner for DotGolf, a company which has developed an

innovative score card system that allows specific details of the individual player to be laser printed at the golf clubs. Benefitz prints most of these cards colour one side and the laser printing is done on the other side at the clubs.

“The introduction of our Truepress Hybrid Printing Machine has provided us with real flexibility when printing these score cards,” explains Aidan Bennett.

“Previously we printed all these score cards monthly, in one run, on our Komori press. Now, with the Truepress, we have the flexibility to print them virtually on demand just as economically.”

The longevity of the project is something that Aidan Bennett is very proud of. “To be still going strong in this golf market after 23 years is something that warms my heart,” says Aidan. “This type of longevity with many customers and different projects is what has laid the foundations for the business we have today at Benefitz.”

We love tackling interesting projects At Benefitz we take on some really interesting projects. We particularly love tackling projects that show of our diverse range of solutions.

One such project was for the Peugeot Kids Driving School.

Peugeot New Zealand has developed a road safety program for children aged 3 - 6 years old. This one hour workshop involves road safety lessons, reading road signs, crossing the road and then the kids get to drive awesome Peugeot pedal cars on a track set up in Peugeot showrooms around the country. The event is free, however any donations go to Peugeot’s supported charity Cure Kids.

The event organiser contacted Blake Douglas and Aidan Bennett at Benefitz with a challenge. She needed us to design and produce the entire Peugeot Kids Driving School track and setting that could be transported to dealerships around the country. They wanted a printed track (the floor) and then a whole range of animals, fences, road signs etc. to make the setting interesting for all the kids taking part.

“We were thrilled to be given the challenge,” says Aidan Bennett. “We designed the track, including zebra crossings, road markings and grassy areas.

We designed all the animals and road signs and we also designed the booklets and licences that are part of the event for the kids. Then we manufactured

and built all these items. We had never printed on lino before but we found a product that was suitable and were able to print in 3 metre x 2 metre panels to make up the 10 metre x 8 metre track. Most of the items were printed on our HP6100 Flatbed printing machine. All the signage and animals etc. on palite, cut to shape and supplied with stands and bases that we built. We also sourced a traffic light. All created within a budget and with the key criteria that it must be transportable. The final product is fantastic.”

Benefitz sign team @ Bayleys, Takapuna BENEFITZ HAS PROVIDED THE TOTAL SOLUTION FOR SIGNAGE AT THE NEW BAYLEYS NORTH SHORE RESIDENTIAL OFFICE IN TAKAPUNA. After many years at 16 Northcroft Street in Takapuna, Bayleys Residential had outgrown the premises so they decided to relocate just along the road to the corner of Northcroft and Auburn Streets. The site, which was previously a motor vehicle dealership, is an excellent location and Sue Stanaway of Bayleys was keen to use innovative signage to take advantage of the profile

of the site. While most of the signage was normal for a project of this type – including frosting, coloured vinyl, computer cut vinyl and three dimensional lettering – Sue was keen to make a real statement with the showroom which was to serve as their auction room.

The challenge was to convert the showroom from a glass ‘fishbowl’ into a functional auction room. Benefitz designer Lee Darby worked closely with Sue Stanaway to create a theme that could be applied to the windows which would make the building interesting from outside and functional from the inside. What they came up with was a ‘people’ theme that provides the perfect solution.

A combination of printed vinyl, coloured vinyl and Hexis frosted vinyl have been used to create the look. All installation and application was undertaken

by Benefitz.

“I know Sue was thrilled with all the signage,” says Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett.

“Due to the massive undertaking of shifting a business of that size, she was keen to get a costeffective solution and that’s exactly what we ended up providing. It looks fantastic.”

Printing Plates for the Benefitz volume offset printing machines are made on a Screen PTR4300 B2 platesetter. This processless system was provided by Fujifilm the agents for Screen in New Zealand.

“This machine has now been in operation for over two years and has proven to be fantastic for our business,” advises Benefitz Managing Director Aidan Bennett. “The installation of this Screen PT-R4300 B2 platesetter means that all our volume offset machines now operate without the need for chemicals which is very pleasing. Apart from the very obvious environmental advancements the machine is also much more reliable and efficient than the previous technology. It is more automated and is able to produce plates much faster which has been excellent given the growth we have had in this part of our business.”

The Screen PT-R4300 platesetter has been developed specifically for those who demand the very highest in both print and environmental performance. It requires no finishing unit, and the chemistry, water and waste by-products of traditional plate production are eliminated completely. There is no compromise to either the quality or productivity achieved when compared to traditional thermal systems.

Serious about sustainability As part of the Benefitz sustainability drive, the company achieved both FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certifications during 2009. These essentially relate to our policy of using paper manufactured based around the sustainable management of the world’s forests.

This certification is controlled by an independent third party, who verify on an ongoing basis that Benefitz is maintaining the FSC and PEFC standards. The following is some information about these two certifications…

The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent, nonprofit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification.

The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests. PEFC has in its membership 35 independent national forest certification

systems of which 25 to date have been through a rigorous assessment process. These 25 systems account for more than 200 million hectares of certified forests producing millions of tonnes of certified timber to the market place, making PEFC the world’s largest certification system.

FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-forprofit organisation established (in 1993) to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.

It is widely regarded as one of the most important initiatives of the last decade to promote responsible forest management worldwide. FSC is a certification system that provides internationally recognised standard-setting, trademark assurance and accreditation services to companies, organizations, and communities interested in responsible forestry. The FSC label provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value. FSC is nationally represented in more than 50 countries around the world.

The three Mimaki printing machines include a 3.2 metre wide grand format printing machine and two 1.6 metre wide large format printing machines. At the same time we installed a Mimaki vinyl cutter in our signage department. The printing machines all print at up to 1440dpi which is virtually photo-quality resolution.

“We understand that our Mimaki 1.6 JV5 is the busiest Mimaki machine in the southern hemisphere.

Apparently this has been gauged from the ink usage of the machine. They are up with the busiest machinery in the place,” adds Dallas Bennett.

“Over the last decade we have been the big movers in producing large images for display, event and architectural applications. This Mimaki machinery has taken the possibilities to a completely new level. Throw in the print quality of our five metres wide HP machine and Flatbed and we have the best large and grand format solutions in the country by far.”

And another thing… A big reason for choosing Mimaki was the lower consumable costs which has resulted in more favourable pricing for our customers. At the time of commissioning the cost of Mimaki inks from Blueprint Imaging was 40% less per square metre than the ink provided by a previous supplier for the machines they superseded.

Benefitz 3.2 x 2m Flatbed Digital Printer Up to 1270dpi, up to 100 square metres per hour, prints The HP Scitex FB6100 Flatbed printing machine has had a massive impact at Benefitz since installation as it can print up to 100 square metres an hour, has superb resolution and can print white.

The FB6100 prints to a resolution of up to 1270 dpi.

It can produce a wide range of brilliant 8-color output with 28 picoliter ink drops. The printing system, with this small 28 picoliter drop size and accurate registration, produces incredible high-quality images.

The FB6100 also converts from a flatbed to a roll-fed printer. It will print at up to 100 square metres an hour (4-colour) and 52 square metres an hour (8-colour). It can print flatbed images up to 3.2 metres x 2 metres.

The FB6100 can print on both rigid and flexible media. It will print directly on virtually any rigid, thick, or heavy specialty media, including glass, wood, metals, or more conventional media such as foam

3. TRUEPRESS HYBRID Up to 20,000 copies

Benefitz broke new ground for printing technology in New Zealand with the installation of a brand new Hybrid Offset Machine – the Screen Truepress – in January. The press combines the efficiency of the set-up time associated with digital printing with the process and quality of offset printing. Very simply it images synthetic printing plates on the press very quickly and then prints with conventional printing inks. Totally integrated and automatic.

4. KOMORI NL528 OFFSET 20,000 to 500,000!

The true workhorse in our Volume Offset Printing area, the Komori NL528 press can print a sheet size of up to 720 x 510mm and 15,000 sheets per hour. Its versatility doesn’t stop there. The Komori has five print units so can print up to 5 colours in one pass. That can be cyan, magenta, yellow and black plus a special colour or an overgloss or seal. We purchased the machine brand new in 2005 from Komori agents in New Zealand, CPI Graphics, and it hasn’t missed a beat.

5. HEIDELBERG GTO52 Stationery, business forms, 1-3 colour, numbers ,perfs

It’s not the prettiest or newest printing machine in the Benefitz stable but it’s one of the best. It knocks over stationery projects, business forms and NCR books in no time, is very cost-effective and can also number and perforate. HEALTH ZONE SUBWAY SPORTS HALL

The versatility of the Benefitz range of printing and signage solutions has been on display during the early construction stages of the national high performance training centre development at the Millennium Institute of Sport & Health (now called the AUT Millennium Campus) on the North Shore.

The Millennium is one of the busiest community facilities in New Zealand, so the challenge facing the Millennium management team is keeping it running smoothly while the massive changes are taking place. A key to this is having good temporary and changing directional signage to ensure patrons are kept well informed.

Benefitz has provided the complete solution for the team at the Millennium. This has included designing the temporary signage, developing cost-effective solutions, then producing and installing this signage.

“The challenge is really around the fact that entry points to the facility will change during the development,” explains Aidan Bennett of Benefitz.

“The initial stages include the building of the new 4000m2 northern wing of the facility which includes the 1,400m2 high performance strength, conditioning and sports science centre. To enable this to happen entry to the entire facility has been diverted around via the athletics stadium so good directional signage was required.”

The solution that Benefitz suggested was to create a temporary structure, from scaffolding, that resembled a start/finish line for a sporting event.

Cost-effective printed banners have been fixed to this structure. A range of temporary signage directing patrons towards this new entry point have also been produce and installed by Benefitz. A sheltered walkway has also been created using scaffolding and banners designed, printed and installed by Benefitz have been used to provide shelter while at the same time promoting the facility.

Benefitz has printed and installed temporary pvc vinyl, pvc mesh vinyl, corflute and palight signage at the AUT Millennium Campus.

This $40M expansion of the AUT Millennium Campus is at the heart of what is being hailed as “the biggest boost ever for New Zealand high performance sport”.

The AUT Millennium Campus will be the National Training Centre for High Performance Sport which is fantastic for the North Shore.

And another thing… As this issue went to press Benefitz were thrilled to learn that it had won the tender to provide all the new permanent signage for this AUT Millennium National Training Centre development.

Benefitz in the RedZone Benefitz is assisting The Warehouse with the roll out of new point of sale signage through their stores.

Benefitz is thrilled to be providing point of sale printing solutions for The Warehouse.

“We were able to provide the perfect solution for The Warehouse due to the fact that we have our HP FB6100 Flatbed machine which can print on virtually anything.” explains Benefitz Director Dallas Bennett.

The solution was found with a combination of printed Palight (composite plastic) and Corflute. This was for point of sale signage as well as directional signage.

“The signage not only looks great, and does the job perfectly, but it was also very economical as we print directly onto the substrates so there was no finishing required,” adds Dallas Bennett. “The project has also included signage for a new ‘popup store’ concept within each store called ‘The RedZone’. The requirement from The Warehouse was that we provided signage for this new concept that looked great even though it was likely to be removed, then reinstalled, at certain times.”

The RedZone concept has apparently been a great success to date in the stores where it has been rolled out.

Benefitz assists NZ Football Benefitz has been assisting New Zealand Football to roll out the first part of their ‘Whole of Football Plan’ over the past few months. The Junior Framework is the first stage of this plan.

With international success, a higher profile and greater financial stability, Football in New Zealand is perfectly placed to capitalise on some golden opportunities. They are implementing a national development structure to benefit participants at all levels.

This involves everyone in the game working together and aligning development programmes to provide a unified pathway into the game. Their aim is to deliver a more consistent experience for all participants no matter what their ability, age or level of participation. Not just players – it also involves the ongoing development of coaches, referees and administrators.

“We have been thrilled to print a whole range of items for The Junior Framework that really shows the diversity of our capability,” says Benefitz Director Robert Johnson. “The superb design job was done

by Sidekick Creative and we have printed this on our

digital and offset machinery from the files they have supplied.”

The items that Benefitz have produced include A4 booklets, A4 National Framework Overview manuals, DL flyers, A5 postcards, A4 flyers, A3 posters, A2 posters, team programmes and Whole of Football books.

“The larger trailers have been purpose built to our own design,” explains Benefitz Director Dallas

Bennett. “Each side is 4.8 metres x 2.4 metres in size. We can print the two images in one piece – 4.8 metres square – on our 5 metre XP5300 machine and this is then easily installed on the trailer by simply taking it right over the A-frame and tying it down on each side. Much easier and quicker than having two pieces to install.”

“The smaller 2 metres x 2 metres mini-billboards have been designed to either be towed on a trailer or simply dropped in a high profile position. These are great for retail sales, events or promotions.”

These solutions are available to hire based on the skins being printed by Benefitz.

Benefitz at Fashion Week For New Zealand Fashion Week, Benefitz was contracted to supply the New Zealand Herald Ink Room mirror wall tiles.

“The product selected was PSP’s Mirror ACM due to is rigid properties and the desire to achieve a flat mirror finish,” explains Benefitz Senior Account Manager Gareth Wheeler. “The result, as you can see in the images, is a very dynamic feature wall that complements the striking decor of the New Zealand Herald Ink Room.”

After testing and sampling it was decided to digitally print black onto clear vinyl, then computer cut and apply to the mirror panels. The full digital print for both the torso image and the text was chosen to give a consistent finish.

3M VHB Tape was used to fix the panels as the existing melamine panels beneath needed to be undamaged during removal at the end of Fashion Week.

“Luc Verstraeten of our Benefitz Signage Team led the install and did a fantastic job,” adds Gareth Wheeler.

“The customer was very happy with the finished solution and it really showed the all round capability of our company when you combine the printing solutions with the installation skills of the sign team.”

I would hazard a guess that it’s a 10-year journey for Christchurch Michele Creagh Firth’s South Island COO

T

hree months later a 6.3 aftershock tore through the city, taking lives and completely destroying much of the CBD and eastern suburbs.

In the aftermath it is hard to get an accurate gauge of the devastation and what the recovery process is going to take. All that is known is that it’s going to be a long, hard process to reclaim what has been destroyed and rebuild the city.

“The amount of work to be done in the central city is huge. It’s hard to put a number on it but I would hazard a guess that it’s a 10-year journey for Christchurch,” says Firth’s South Island COO, Michele Creagh. “February 22 dealt a significant change in terms of the scale of damage and made the rebuild far more complex than what it was. A number of residential houses have suffered significant damage and the city needs to be effectively rebuilt, so we can expect the commercial concrete market will have a substantial pick up in years to come.”

As with any major operation, time, manpower and logistics always come into play and before the real rebuilding effort can begin, major infrastructure needs to be set up.

“The main issue for companies in the short term is the timing of volume increase. We’re

expecting a significant pick up in volume, but the issue is timing, that’s the uncertain part,” says Creagh. “Its significant and it is just too hard to estimate the numbers at this stage – there will be work for a long time. The issue for the city is to sort out priorities – what will be done first.”

“Right now there is a lot of work going on in the background, ensuring we are well prepared when the real rebuilding begins.”

In the residential market significant assessments need to be completed by the EQC. Although work has begun the focus is on emergency repair – although that will change over the next couple of months as the repairs get underway The real challenge facing the industry in the rebuilding effort is in the volumes: how much demand will there be? Is there enough stock? Is there enough machinery and people to operate it?

Firth were starting to see daily increases in volume prior to February 22 related to the work flow through from the original September 4 quake, but volumes obviously reduced significantly again straight after the earthquake.

“We review the numbers weekly and we’re trying to judge what we need because once things get started, we don’t want to be caught short. Will our annual volume double or treble? I don’t have an answer for that at this stage.”

“We have to be able to react quickly; it’s a fine balancing act.”

Creagh has already bought new trucks and the recruitment drive has begun. Additional trucks from across the South Island may need to be pulled back to Christchurch as well; Firth has significant ability to build capacity quickly if required.

“It will take some time to rebuild – the numbers are significant – but we have the

capability, we’re not worried about that, it’s the timing we need to prepare for.”

So it’s not a matter of if Michele Creagh the demand can be met, the challenge for Creagh and the industry in general, is trying to predict what that demand is going to be and how to prepare for it ahead of time.

But as Creagh describes it, for the people of Christchurch the real issue isn’t material: “The issue for most companies in Christchurch after the earthquake was about their people and the need to allow employees time to sort out their own issues, both at home and coming to terms with what had happened, the shock and the sadness of it all”.

The North Harbour Club – and its annual AIMES Awards – have been around since 1995. Since that time over $1.3 million has been provided in awards (grants) to young people of the North Harbour region who are deemed to be achieving excellence.

These prestigious awards provide the recipients – all North Harbour residents aged 13 to 25 years – with unconditional cash to celebrate their exceptional achievements and a helping hand to the next stage of their promising careers.

AIMES winners receive a share of over $100,000 annually. The awards are presented in six categories: The Arts (sponsored by ASB); IT, Innovation and Science (sponsored by Massey University); Music (sponsored by Albany Toyota); Education (Sponsored

by Kristin School) ; Sport (sponsored by AUT Millennium); and Service to the Community (sponsored

by Auckland Council). In addition, Hayes Knight Emerging Talent Awards are given to young people with considerable promise in any of the awards’ categories, and are selected as part of the AIMES process.

North Harbour Club President Peter Wall says: “The North Harbour Club’s awards are all about giving recognition to the extraordinary young people that live in our community. They not only recognise the remarkable talent of the recipients, but also acknowledge the phenomenal determination and hard work that has made them stand out in their chosen field. Scholarships Benefitz is playing its part in developing new talent for the industry by providing $5000 worth of annual Graphic Design Scholarships across five North Shore Schools.

A $1000 Benefitz Graphic Design Scholarship is awarded annually to each of the top Graphic Design students at Kristin School, Rangitoto College, Westlake Boys, Westlake Girls and Takapuna Grammar.

One key criteria is that applicants must intend to pursue a career in the graphic design industry.

In 2009 scholarships were awarded to William Brooks (Kristin School), Ting Yan (Jamie) Kwan (Rangitoto College), Jessica Lim (Takapuna Grammar), Yuan Xing Lisa Liu (Westlake Girls High School) and David Duan (Westlake Boys High School).

The 2010 Benefitz Graphic Design Scholarships were awarded to Elizabeth Askew (Kristin School), Kathryn Barker (Rangitoto College), Naawie Tutugoro (Takapuna Grammar), Tahlia Northcoft (Westlake Girls High School) and Max Vosloo (Westlake Boys High School).

Each of these students were presented with a certificate and a cheque for $1000 which is to go towards their studies in 2011.

Benefitz supports ‘Love Your Coast’

North Shore Coastal Clean-up The team at Benefitz teamed up with Sustainable Coastlines for a massive cleanup of our local beaches on April 15th and 16th.

Sustainable Coastlines is an Auckland based charity which launched an initiative called ‘Love Your Coast’, a series of massive beach clean-up events around New Zealand. Rather than being just another organisation, Love Your Coast is an ongoing project that helps people across the country look after the coastlines we all love.

The simple activity at the core of this, picking up rubbish from the coast, combines hands-on practical learning with fun.

“This is something that we were only too pleased to get in behind and the results speak for themselves,” explained Dallas Bennett of Benefitz following the April cleanup. “Our beaches are such an important part of our lifestyle on the Shore and we need to look after them. This initiative is a great way to physically do it and also to send a great message out to the community.”

Over 16,000 litres (around 3.3 tonnes!) of rubbish was removed from the beaches, mangroves and waterways of Auckland’s North Shore over the three day event. On Thursday, around 60 students, businesses and volunteers got stuck into clean-ups in Torbay, Wairau Creek, Okura and Karepiro Bay. On

Friday the crew hit the beaches en masse, with over 750 volunteers cleaning-up stretches of coastline all over the North Shore. Finally on Saturday, over 100 hardy souls braved driving rain and mud to storm the shores around the eight event stations. All in all over 900 volunteers got together during this event to scour the beaches of the Shore.

In addition to Benefitz, Channel Magazine was a key sponsor of the ‘Love Your Coast’ North Shore Coastal Clean-up.
