Shore wools are a SURE thing!

The wool shop in Browns Bay has a lot to offer not only has it got plenty of wool in various blends but its staff actually know how to help customers to learn, discover and create a peace of their own magic! We often don’t give too much thought about wool, but it is well known that the benefits of Wool far out weigh the performance of man made fibres. Not only does it have a fantastic soft luxurious feel and offer great warmth in the winter, wool is a naturally occurring fibre that offers other amazing benefits. Wool is hypoallergenic, it is resistant to bacteria, mould and mildew and it does not change its shape. It has a natural crimp that allows it to return to its natural shape even after being stretched by up to 30%! Its balanced thermal insulation properties means that it is warm in winter and cool in the summer and it has high UV protection perfect for the New Zealand Climate! You may be happy to discover that dust mites don't like wool as they need moisture to survive and wool has microscopic pores that respond effectively to changes in humidity making it unfavourable for the growth and breeding of the house dust mite. We all know that dust mite allergens are one of the triggers for asthma attacks so let’s get busy and create something ourselves. Useful handmade items are just so in VOGUE right now and in our opinion worth every penny. Another quality of Wool is its anti-static and it can be easily cleaned. It is also flame resistant. Need we say more... come into Shore Wools, get inspired, and create your own bit of magic today. There is an amazing sale on and various discounts on wool for February and March so make wool your new year’s investment and go on in and see manager Linda Colburn and get creative! Browns Bay Magazine: From the Team

First of six for 2015! Welcome to our first issue for 2015. During the year we will be publishing six bi-monthly issues. As well as this February issue there will be issues published in April, June, August, October and December. This magazine is all about highlighting all the fantastic things happening in our community. For that reason we love bringing you positive stories about local not-for-profit organisations and businesses. This is the third issue that we have published and the

magazine continues to grow in content and commercial support, so the formula is proving to be good. In this issue we highlight the upcoming opening of the new New World Supermarket. What a great addition this is going to be to the for Browns Bay and the wider area. Owner Garry Christini is recognised as a very good supermarket operator who is community minded. So we are sure locals will love their new state-of-the-art supermarket.

This is the third issue that we have published and the magazine continues to grow in content and commercial support, so the formula is proving to be good.

The Channel Magazine and Browns Bay Magazine team From left: Aidan Bennett, Angela Johnson, Heather Vermeer, Crystal Sharp and Claudia Renford.

Also in this issue we profile the improvements that have been made to the local (East Coast Bays) Library under the leadership of Ann Hill. Ann retires in April this year and will leave the library in great shape as one of the busiest in the region. We also include a feature article on the Sunday market. Not only is this a great ongoing community initiative, it also helps to fund Coastguard North Shore, whose home is on our beach front. We also have lots of interesting news from local businesses and the Bays Community Centre newsletter has also been a popular addition to the magazine. We hope you enjoy the read. Our next issue is out in April, feel free to contact us should you wish to have content included in this next issue. Angela, Aidan and the team. Email: brownsbay@channelmag.co.nz

Browns Bay Business Association: From the Manager

What a wonderful summer in paradise! Welcome to our first issue for 2015 of the mighty Browns Bay Magazine. What a wonderful summer we are having in the beautiful Bay’s district of the Shore. With our safe sandy beaches, brilliant beachfront promenade and great places to chill out and have something to eat or drink, is this not paradise? I hope your Christmas and New Year aren’t too distant memories and you had quality time spent with loved ones and friends during the summer holiday period. Browns Bay was certainly lively in December. Once again we had a record turn out to the annual Christmas Parade, with more floats than the previous year and a huge crowd eagerly awaiting the arrival of Santa. The new six metre Christmas Tree that the association had constructed in November proved a huge hit also. We had hundreds of Browns Bay youngsters join us to celebrate the first ever switching on ceremony for the lights on the tree. After such a large response, we intend to make this an annual event. I would like to thank those local businesses that assisted with the sponsorship of the tree as this was a large capital expense for the association: Forrest Funeral Services: SBA Browns Bay: Barfoot and Thompson: Browns Bay Liquor. Please support these businesses – you will find their details on our website – www.brownsbay.org.nz Our new security patrols, that we instigated nightly throughout the shopping centre in November, have proved a great success and have contributed to an environment where people can feel safe and properties are secure. The team at Matrix Security have done an excellent job. These patrols will continue and are just part of what the business association is prepared to provide for our local community so you can enjoy your spare time in Browns Bay. March will see the long-awaited opening

of the new New World supermarket and I am sure locals will be impressed. We are very well provided for here with both major supermarkets brands present – and state-of-the-art. I am looking forward to this providing the drive for some other retailers in key categories to come into our greatly improving retail environment.

Turning on the Christmas Tree Lights in Browns Bay The fabulous new Christmas Tree comes alive! Friday November 21st was a special night in Browns Bay. There was a huge turnout to see the lights on Browns Bay's fabulous new Christmas Tree turned on for the very first time. It was a tremendous occasion that brought the community together for a real celebration. A large number of people (including families with children) turned up to see the entertainment and one lucky youngster, Maya Divall (with mum Shellene and Brother Stephen), won the lucky draw on the night to turn on the Christmas Tree lights. The crowd was also treated to performances by Northcross Intermediate School, Joshua Peters of Corelli School Int Academic school of the Arts and the one and only Santa was there with his Magic Elf (generously sponsored by Ray White). The business association made the decision to purchase the big Christmas Tree for Browns Bay earlier in the year. The tree will now be a fixture in Browns Bay every Christmas.

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) Celebrating 40 Years of service in Browns Bay The CAB service is all about helping people to know and understand their rights and obligations, how to use this information to get the best outcomes, providing people with the confidence and support they need to take action, and working for positive social change within communities and wider society. The organisation has been providing these services to the Bays area from Browns Bay for four decades. This milestone was celebrated with a function at the Marine Centre in Browns Bay during December. This was a lovely evening filled with speeches, singing as well as food and beverages celebrating the past and the future of CAB and the importance it plays amongst our community. “40 years of the CAB in Browns Bay is just outstanding,” commented Murray Hill, the local Business Association manager. "Over this period there has been many many thousands of hours put in by hard working volunteers to ensure locals are receiving good advice around a range of issues that are affecting them personally." Attendees included local board chair Julia Parfitt and Joan Larder a founding member of CAB Browns Bay. A feature of the evening were old documents and photographs of those early members of the CAB. A common comment on the night was that it is fantastic to see how far CAB had come since its early days on the beach front of Browns Bay. CAB Browns Bay is now located at the Bays Community Centre, 2 Glen Road. Phone 4769-2222 or email: cab.brownsbay@xtra.co.nz www.cab.org.nz

A trip up Table Mountain (walking or by cable car) is a must, time the weather right and the views are spectacular. While visiting family in Zimbabwe we drove to Lake Kariba for a few nights on one of the houseboats, you are right in the midst of wildlife: elephants, hippo, croc’s, buffalo, buck etc. and it is a fisherman’s dream – bream during summer and tiger fish during the cooler months. The sunsets are stunning." Yvonne Payne – Shanghai China “Recently my husband and I spent 10 days in Shanghai to visit my son. This allowed us to spend a lot of time venturing way beyond the tourist track and find some stunning and startling contracts. The insect market – where the pet crickets are purchased in their little boxes. The Marriage market where families try to find the best match to allow them security in their old age. Fashion: with Art and Soul

Making a splash at Art and Soul by Marie Williams This is our first summer selling swimwear and we have been really delighted with our TOGS swimwear (and the summer!) The TOGS range fit very well and there is a style to suit everyone. At Art and Soul we stock sizes 10 - 20, and most come with power mesh lining for tummy control.

Pear? Draw attention away from your bottom half with detailing near the bust. This strong V neck gives strength to your shoulders and adds balance. An all over pattern also distracts the eye.

Here’s a few pointers to remember when choosing swimwear: • Show off what areas you like with brighter colours and minimize the ones you don’t with darker colours. • Look for strategically placed gathers to either add volume or hide areas. • Halter necks and underwires both give extra support where needed. • Placement prints and stripes help flatter by drawing the eye along the line.

Rectangular? Clever crossover and gathering details at the waist define and add shape. This one is clever because the stripe also gives extra curves. A plain bottom downplays this area.

Petite?

Apple?

This suit with a frill near the bust adds fullness and can also lengthen the torso. Crisp and smart it’s the frill that captures your attention.

This tankini with a darker frill at the waist helps make a visual waistline by drawing your attention to the printed top and bottom and the floaty styling is wonderful for concealing those areas you like to hide.

FEATURE: East Coast Bays Library

Library Forges Forward Towards New Chapter It’s time for the local library to turn a new page. For 20 years, Ann Hill has been at the helm of the bustling community hub that is East Coast Bays Library and this Autumn she retires, marking the end of an era and the start of a new chapter for the library. Officially the busiest in the Auckland region, behind the Central Library in the city, East Coast Bays Library has come a long way under Ann’s guidance and she will leave it in great shape when she finally closes the book on her career in April. Beginning as a ‘pre-fab’ house prior to 1983, when the existing main building was built, the structure has been extended to its current size gradually over the years; in 1989 it was extended, in the 1990s the Ethel Baxter Room was added as a newspaper and magazine reading area and, most recently, in 2010 the Strinati family funded the courtyard outside the teens’ book area. But it is the books and the people that make a library what it is of course, and Ann is proud of the community that the place serves so well. She said: “We have always provided a seven days service to the community. This service has grown and changed as a reflection of what our community has wanted from us.” Mandarin classes, story time on Sundays and activities for children on Saturdays, for example, are among the sessions to have been added to the library’s list in recent times. “We know our library and we know our customers and we want to respond to our customers’ needs to deliver the service that they want from us. There is a council umbrella we work under of course, but the services and programmes that we offer are in response to our customers’ needs.” Ann is quick to heap praise on her ‘wonderful team‘ of colleagues. She said: “We have some very talented and skillful staff who are very knowledgeable and very enthusiastic.” One such staff star is Sarah Powell whose remit includes adult services and community outreach. Sarah has worked alongside Ann for 13 years and loves her job and life in Browns Bay. “It’s such a lovely area to work and live in. Initially, it was a passion for reading that brought me to this job, but I enjoy the customer service that comes with it just as much. This job offers a great combination of these two elements.” Sarah has introduced dozens of programmes and initiatives to the library over the years and currently holds monthly ‘Book Chats’ where people come in to discuss books that they have been reading. These sessions are also held in Korean and Mandarin and serve as a way of forging community by bringing people together to share their experiences and enjoy some social time. Technology has of course altered the library landscape. Sarah said: “More and more people are getting e-books from our online catalogue so some people choose to do this instead of actually

Helen Beckingsale, Ann Hill and Sarah Powell.

coming into the library. It’s an interesting time of change. The library is becoming more and more a community space than being a library in the traditional sense.” And the children’s activities and resources are a big part of what the library does. Helen Beckingsale is in charge of providing for the library’s ‘little people’. She has been at ECB Library for seven years and has an infectious enthusiasm for reading and literature that often rubs off. She said: “I am a passionate advocate of children’s books. I like to help children expand their horizons; to expand them beyond simply the books that are madly popular at the time, to discover older books or titles they wouldn’t necessarily have chosen.” The most popular children’s reads at present include titles by comical British author David Walliams, whose books are illustrated by Quentin Blake - the man who brought many of Roald Dahl’s characters to life with his drawings. Jeronimo Stilton is also another kids’ crowd-pleaser. Helen arranged for this popular character to be a part of the most recent Browns Bay Santa Parade, sourcing the dress-up costume from the Scholastic company behind the books. This is just an example of the lengths these library staff members go to, to bring added value to their community. And Ann, a proud grandmother with another grandchild on the way, is not going to give up serving the community upon retirement; she plans to get involved in community voluntary work next. www.brownsbay.org.nz

Health, Fitness & Beauty: Beachside, Browns Bay

Love the skin you’re in! Beauty with Sarah Kitcher of Beachside Beauty, Browns Bay

This month the team at Beachside dispel a few myths and answer some questions about working out at the gym – and what sets them apart from the rest. They've been loved by the people of the Bays for over 21 years.

Sarah Kitcher.

It’s a beauty jungle out there. Thousands of products and procedures are made so readily available to us these days! In the last 10 years active ingredients in products have become so advanced. It can be completely overwhelming when it comes to deciding what products are best suited for your skin health and your skin concerns. The big question is will you get the results you want? Skin is my passion; so let me tell you why I chose to work with O Cosmedics. Having been in the beauty industry for over 20 years now, I have tried and tested many products as you can imagine. So with starting my own business I knew I needed to get this right. So after a lot of research I knew what I wanted in a product. • A potent, pure combination of proven medical grade ingredients. • Superior formulations with cutting edge delivery systems. • Highest possible doses of active ingredients before prescription. • A product made for Australasian skins that is results driven. • Natural and organic where justified. • 100% No parabens, no petrochemicals, no artificial colours, no Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, no chemical preservatives, no nanotechnology and no animal cruelty. Too much to ask! I don’t think so, O Cosmedics tick all the boxes for me, and not only that, being able to perform clinical treatments that reverse and prevent serious skin conditions. Let me share with you just a few of my must have ingredients to look out for in your skin care products. If you’re serious about skin and you want results. • Retinol – is a form of Vitamin A, a fat‐soluble antioxidant, widely used for the treatment of acne, sun damaged and ageing skins. Gym Myths Busted!

Karl Puohotaua.

Doing weights will make me big and bulky? Not if you’re a woman. Woman lack the right balance of hormones, testerone and growth hormone to put on muscle mass the way men do. Doing weights will actually increase your metabolism. All gyms are the same, so I’m going to the cheapest one? All gym’s are different, the feel, vibe, the staff! This can really impact how often you come to the gym and what results you get. At Beachside we want you to feel at home and comfortable. We do this with our friendly down to earth approach and encourage members to reach their health and fitness goals. Everyone who goes to the gym is under 30 and in way better shape than me! Here at Beachside our youngest member is 14 and our oldest is 92. We cater for all ages, shapes and sizes. We understand everyone is unique and has different goals. We just want to help you get to them. We work with top athletes, first 15 rugby players to beginners and people in recovery or rehabilitation programmes. I have too many injuries to go to a gym! At Beachside we have an in-house physio, who works in conjunction with our fully trained REPS registered staff to manage, improve and prevent injuries. No one talks to you at the gym. Sometimes people prefer to come in and just workout, which is fine, but we like to know our members and make them feel part of the community here at Beachside. We are fully staffed all hours and it is our mission to really get to know you and get you involved in our social activities. We are a community here where members soon become friends. Amongst all of the staff we know every member by name, which is something we really strive to achieve and maintain. Come and see us directly at 30 Anzac Road, Browns Bay. Phone 479-2924 or email us at info@beachside.co.nz. We look forward to hearing from you or meeting you soon. Karl and the team at Beachside.

FEATURE: Sunday Market

Much More Than A Market!

It’s a market, the way markets used to be. It’s a place to find a bargain, a place to meet, and a place that provides valuable funding for the community. Browns Bay Market is unique. The only community-based, community run and community fund-raising market in the Auckland region, Browns Bay Market has been bringing people together and bringing a boost to the area in its current format for the past four years. Browns Bay Market Charitable Trust sees that all stall holder site fees go to Coastguard North Shore and the local community. The not-for-profit organisation is staffed by volunteers and is one of very few such community markets operating in New Zealand. Trustee Chris Webb said: “It’s predominantly a secondhand market that’s set up every Sunday by volunteers from the local Coastguard. 75% of the operating profits we have made so far have gone to the Coastguard and 25% to other community projects.” For its funding drive in 2014/15, the Trust will be contributing significantly towards the purchase of a new rescue vessel for the Coastguard and is funding new sun shades for playgrounds at Waiake and Sherwood Green to the sum of $36,000. In 2013, $24,000 was donated for new engines and maintenance for North Shore Rescue, the Coastguard search and rescue vessel based in Browns Bay. The Trust also gave a grant of $33,000 of the $35,000 required to refurbish the Phoenix Plaza - the bandstand and entertainment hub of Browns Bay. Member of the Browns Bay Market Trust Carey Marsh is passionate about the market, which has not been without its challenges for organisers. She said the market had been ‘getting the blame‘ for rubbish that had been left on the site - but some detective worked proved the market had not generated the mess, Carey said. Photos were taken at 3am showing the rubbish had already been dumped before the markets had even been set up, she explained. Carey said another challenge was that, for the last 12 months, the market has ‘had to downsize to cope with the loss of a significant number of spaces as the New World supermarket was redeveloped’. Amicable discussions are ongoing with the supermarket owner, which she hopes will result in the market regaining some of the car park spaces each Sunday morning. Carey said: “In this way, the market would return to an unbroken field of stall holders, with car parking at the edges, a win-win for us and nice to know that a “Schools use the market as part large business such as New of their NCEA business studies programm World are very supportive e of what we do and how business and the market can co exist. “We look forward to working with them in future and no doubt they will also benefit from having us on their doorstep that early – and people knowing it is their car park we are using.” The Anzac Road 16

market is experiencing large numbers of enquiries from prospective stallholders, and as a result, Carey said introducing a pre-book/prepay model may be the fairest way to ensure everyone gets a spot in future. Social media is also helping with, and reflecting, the market’s popularity. Carey said: “Our Facebook page has a growing audience - nearly 500 likes - and very good engagements levels, which I hope shows people feel part of the market community.” The Local Board and many local businesses have shown solid support for the market, with the fruit and vegetable shop on Inverness Road that back onto the market, for example, supporting by paying for the site as a donation to Coastguard. Carey said organisers have a good relationship with the Rib Shack and other shops facing the market. Carey gave an indication of why she thinks the markets work so well. “Our success is due to keeping a tight control on the types of stall holder we let in and restricting food/takeaway stalls. We have nothing against these, but we are not a food market and Browns Bay has more than enough takeaways and cafés. We are a secondhand, collectables and, for many stallholders, an antique market.” She added: “The Business Association realises the market is also part of the total ‘package’ that is Browns Bay.” The market has also had a fulfilling knock-on effect for a local man with special needs. David, who has suffered severe epileptic fits for many years and is developmentally-impaired, helps out each week by collecting traffic cones, helping to dismantle gazebos, collecting tables and emptying rubbish bins. He can be seen proudly sporting a purpose-given yellow market t-shirt and enjoys being treated as a market ‘employee’, a member of the team. Carey said that feedback from David’s mum is that his role as a ‘workmate’ has brought a new sense of confidence and greater happiness to his life. Major beneficiary of the market funds raised, Coastguard North Shore, has been headed up by President John Drake since July 2014. He explained some of the Coastguard’s work. “We operate across the Hauraki Gulf up as far as Great Barrier Island, out to the Coromandel and into the Auckland and upper Harbour areas - a large operational area. “We pride ourselves on our response times and when we are not on the water we are available on pager - we can be on the water and responding to a call out from pager in approx 10mins - a service we provide 7 days, 24hrs 365 days of the year.” The Coastguard’s Rescue Vessel is on the water every weekend, public holiday and over the Christmas Holiday season, with approx 50 dedicated volunteers that both crew the vessel and/or operate as "dry crew" - looking after fundraising and community events etc. John said: “Funding is always a concern for us because we self fund a large portion of our unit costs. Keeping the vessel on the water for those that need our assistance and to maintain crew

training and vital equipment is an expensive exercise. “To that end, some of the proceeds of the Browns Bay Market are directly responsible for keeping the Unit afloat and we are very grateful for the support we receive from those that choose to have a stall in the market on a Sunday.” The Coastguard has two regular crew members that set the market up on a Sunday. John called this ‘a very demanding regime’, starting at around 3.30am and not coming to an end until about 3pm the same day. These two are also assisted each week by a further coastguard crew member who guides stall holders into allocated parking spots and puts up hired gazebos. John said they hoped to replace their current vessel at the start of summer 2015, and fund-raising is continuing apace with grant applications and Coastguard Summer Lottery Tickets are being sold, to reach the funding total needed.

There are around 100 Pizza Hut takeaway stores in New Zealand. What is the group about? This group aims to explore what it means to be a foreigner in NZ. I Love What I Do: Susanne Andoe

A Zest for Life - and Zumba! Zumba instructor, Susanne Andoe, came to New Zealand from Germany eight years ago with her husband and absolutely loves living in Browns Bay. She thinks dancing is in her blood as both her Grandma and Uncle were ballet dancers and Susanne herself has always been involved in amateur dance groups. She says: “I love jogging, cycling, swimming and Pilates. In short, I can’t think of living without being active.” We caught up with Susanne to find out all about her love of Zumba and the classes she runs in Browns Bay. Courtney Bennett: Describe Zumba in three words: Susanne Andoe: Dance, Fun, Alive. CB: How did you get involved in Zumba? SA: I saw an advert on TV, it looked great. I went to a class - the moves and rhythms were infectious and I was hooked. After a year or so, I wanted even more and became an instructor myself. CB: What’s the best part about teaching Zumba? SA: To share the love of this awesome dance fitness with my students, see the smiles and sweat on their faces, the improvements in their moves and coordination, and the weight loss they tell me about. It also keeps me fit, I constantly learn new things and push myself to do better. And I can choose the songs and choreography.

CB: What are the health and wellbeing benefits of Zumba? SA: Zumba is a fitness programme that combines Latin and international music with dance moves, creating interval training – fast and slow rhythms – as well as resistance training. This in turn improves cardiovascular health, weight loss, cognitive function and coordination. It is a complete body workout, boosts your mood, and relieves stress. It’s fun, it’s social and can be adapted to any fitness level. CB: Are there any Zumba instructors worldwide that you look up to? SA: Beto Perez – he is the creator of Zumba and absolutely fabulous. I met him in person – an inspiring dance guru who is still a wonderfully normal person. Also Tanya Beardsley and Gina Grant – they were the big stars when I started. They inspired me and deepened my love for Zumba. CB: What do you do in your spare time? SA: The other activity close to my heart is giving Reflexology treatments. I love the way Zumba and Reflexology complement each other – health combined with fitness creates wellness. Any spare time left is filled with jogging, swimming in the ocean, cycling, walking the neighbour’s dog Bessi, reading and meeting with friends. In the evenings I like to relax in front of the TV. CB: Why would you recommend that people try Zumba? SA: Zumba is special; no boring weight lifting and counting minutes. Zumba lets you forget the time. It adds back spice to your life, you start to feel young again with all these moves and uplifting music. I am 50 but I have the body of a 30-year-old and I put that down to Zumba, you train a lot of tiny muscles around your hips and belly you didn’t even know you have. As an ordinary stiff German, I definitely didn’t know my hips could move like that. But, the great thing about Zumba is everybody can do it. Zumba is for all ages and fitness levels. CB: Do you have a range of people demographically doing your Zumba classes? SA: I have students of all walks of life and nationalities, young and old, fit and not so fit, regulars and pop-ins. Many families these days have a tight budget, so to make it affordable for all - mums at home, shift workers, pensioners, housewives, au pairs, self-employed, students - I charge only $5.00 per class. I want them all to be able to come and join an hour of fun and dance for just the price of a coffee. For me, it is about getting people involved in a healthier lifestyle. CB: In 10 years time, I’ll be… SA: Still doing Zumba! Zumba turned my life clock back 20 years and I won’t give that up again. I am fitter and sexier than I ever was before, my body awareness is so much better. My next goal is to qualify as a group fitness instructor to give me a wider range of opportunities to work with and help people become fitter and healthier.

Karen Jackson, the friendly face behind This Is A Bag Shop in Clyde Road.

Ice Man Discovers Bags! The history of Bags never ceases to amaze me as I ponder about the origins of them and wonder when exactly people started using bags? Have you ever wondered, what, why, when or who? After a little bit of ‘digging’ I have discovered what historians consider quite a hoot, as the very first bags proceeded directly from purses, with the oldest found Ötzi's flint knife purse dating back more than 5000 years ago and its sheath. with the discovery of “Otzi the Ice man!”. Yes Ladies you heard that correctly, the origins of our gorgeous bags descend from the ice man and their primitive need to carry objects whilst hunting! These days the roles seem to have reversed a little and today females are the hunter gathers, collecting items and placing them in their hand bags. What collection has Karen in store for us at “This is a Bag Shop”. It looks like Shoulder bags are a gorgeous yet comfortable item to have this Summer. Simply drape it over your shoulder or horizontally over your body. Perfect and functional to look good and keep your hands free! Put a bit of colour into your step and look fabulous in one of these little charmers.

The flavour of French food fascinates the palate. You can sum up the entire French attitude to food by saying that the French like to enjoy their meals! French cuisine takes real skill and all meals are prepared carefully and often very slowly to bring out the real flavours and authentic taste of how the dish or food is meant to taste. To experience that kind of passion you simply have to taste French cuisine. At the fabulous French Bakery – La Tropezienne in Browns Bay – they have an extremely wide variety for you to choose from. The Life Coach: Vivienne Kelly, Momentum Life Coaching & Training

Interview: Shan Moulder, The Meat Room

What Do You Really Want? A chat with your Stop for a moment and reflect on what your IDEAL life would look, feel and even sound like. What kind of home do you want to live in? What sort of job would excite you? What about your ideal partner? Family, holiday, car, your health... (You get the idea). A brilliant way to become clear on what you want for your future is to create a Vision Board. Cut out pictures that represent your absolute ideal and paste them onto a large piece of card. Be specific. Find pictures that show what you want, how you want to feel, what you want to do. Include pictures that pull at your soul, inspire and excite you. As you sift and page through magazines focusing on your ideal, you get a clearer idea of what you want, even if you didn’t know before. Vision-boarding is NOT ABOUT HOW you will get it; it’s purely about what you want. The planning and action is a separate thing completely. I make a point of making a new one each year. I love looking back over previous ones and get blown away by how much actually comes to fruition. It doesn’t matter how it works… it just does.

A brilliant way to become clear on what you want for your future is to create a Vision Board. Unless you have a clear vision, it can be easy for life to tick along in a fog. It’s like driving a car with no clear destination…you waste time and fuel drifting around aimlessly. I invite you to give this project a try, either with a few friends or quietly reflecting by yourself – grab your magazines, scissors and glue and get going! new local butcher

Angela Johnson stopped in for a chat during January with Browns Bay's new local 'premium' butcher Shan Moulder at The Meat Room in Anzac Road.

Shan Moulder and his Dad.

ANGELA JOHNSON: Why does the North Shore need another butchery? SHAN MOUDLER: I believe that the true butchery trade is dying and the store that I provide is one that will reinstall the original beliefs of qualify cuts for a good price.

THE MEAT ROOM

AJ: Why did you want to start your own butchery? SM: Since I was 13 I had been working at my father’s butchery which was started by my father, I could say that it was in my blood. From a child my senses have been connected to meat, whether it is breaking down the beast, cutting the steak and then finally cooking it. I have a passion to create the best. I believe that Aucklander's deserve to have the best and The Meat Room will provide that. AJ: What do you bring to the table that no other current butcher does? SM: I have never been one to say how great I am at anything, but I have a raw passion about meat, and I believe that I can create the best product for my customers. I’ve been a butcher all my life. It’s in my DNA. I want to create that passion around meat that there once was, where someone can be proud to bring my sausages or steaks that I have recommended to a BBQ. I want to share and enjoy the different cuts that I have mastered over the years. AJ: What are your passions? SM: Well meat for sure! But not only that, it is how each cut is prepared, cooked, and then served. There is only one thing I enjoy more than being a butcher it is preparing the meat then cooking it and sharing it with my family and friends. AJ: In one sentence can you sum up what The Meat Room is? SM: The Meat Room is passion. It is turning a raw ingredient into something that can be shared and enjoyed. Orders and special requests are welcome, so make sure you drop in and see Shan at The Meat Room – 26 Anzac Road, Browns Bay, Phone 973-1989. Real Estate: With Geraldine Zareian, MREINZ, Barfoot & Thompson

Local Business: Pukeko Bakery

2015 Starts with Strong Demand! December’s residential property sales in Auckland were the strongest they have been in a December for the past decade, with sales numbers up significantly, prices reaching all-time highs, and the number of available listings reaching an all-time low. Geraldine Zareian. It was our busiest December in the last 10 years with demand never being higher, or choice lower. Sales in December were 28.5 percent higher than in December 2013. At the same time the number of properties on our books at the end of December was 2500, our lowest number for any month end in the past 10 years. For us, this represents less than two months’ stock, and indicates that in the first quarter of this year, buyer choice will remain severely limited. The past two years of strong price growth is reflected in the significant change in sales volumes in both the higher and lower price segments of the market. Some would call it a “Seller’s Market”. Jason Olmstead, owner of the Pukeko Bakery.

French Baguette, Italian Ciabatta... San Francisco Sour Dough Could an equally well loved loaf one day hail from New Zealand? If it happens odds are that Jason Olmstead will be the ‘Creator'. Jason is the chef-turned-baker behind Pukeko Bakery now in Browns Bay. Born in Colorado and resident in France, Italy and San Francisco for part of his career, Jason was a chef who baked as a hobby. "I’m now a baker who cooks as a hobby,” he says. When he moved to New Zealand 15 years ago he took a gamble on a change of direction and began baking artisan bread to supply his own retail shop in Mairangi Bay. The Prada team arrived not long after to prepare for the 2000 Americas Cup and their manager put the word out to a number of bakeries in Auckland to send samples of their bread. Olmstead did some research, found the team mainly hailed from Tuscany and phoned a friend from Florence. “What shall I bake them?” he asked. His “schiacciata’ (meaning squashed flat in Italian) was the taste of home they were looking for and they ordered 12kgs of bread a day for the duration of their stay. “That’s how my wholesale business was born.” Jason now bakes for many of the city’s finest restaurants. Jason is interested in developing food that is quintessentially kiwi, particularly a New Zealand style of bread. Some of Pukeko’s products use a start that was made from a recipe Jason’s father in law, who is of Tuhoe descent, gave him. “Our most popular bread at the moment is Kumara Bread which is a bright orange colour.” Jason also uses beetroot, pumpkin and the deep purple Maori potato, not only for flavour, but for the vibrant natural colours. He also makes traditional Italian jet- black loaf called “Pane Nero” which is coloured with a squid ink. As well as lovely bread there are many other tasty and fresh delights at Pukeko Bakery. A range of French pastries, yummy almond croissant, pain au chocolat, apricot Danish and more! So come and meet Jason at Pukeko Bakery, or at one of the local Farmers Markets, and get your hands on what could one day become a world-famous artisanal loaf. Cam Calkoen is an inspirational speaker who is bending perceptions to inspire change and an attitude of awesomeness through simple, lasting human truths. Passionate about the Shore, this column reflects the awesomeness that surrounds us and the potential we all have to achieve a personal best.

Doing things that scare us...

One of the first speeches I gave was to Westlake Girls High School. I was not a comfortable speaker, it seemed the opposite to fun and the process scared me greatly. But I knew this was an OPPORTUNITY to embrace a passion for writing and telling stories. I enjoyed the thought of performing and was wanting to do something awesome with my life. Between agreeing to do the speech and giving it I had got an awful flu. I was doing all that I could to get better and went on to give the speech which was going pretty well until about halfway through when I felt an almighty sneeze coming on. I was doing all I could to keep speaking and not sneeze which was not very pretty and very difficult. In my case it was impossible. Because all of a sudden my nose exploded, snot everywhere! My hanky, not in my pocket but underneath a note at home that said “Cam! Do not forget you hanky”. I was in a moment of dilemma with the girls of the audience really not sure what to do. Then I hear my manager (Dean Flyger) walking up on stage behind me, not with a hanky, not with a tissue, but his very own shirt for me to blow my nose on. So I did. They say that support is the foundation to success and I’d say that allowing someone to blow their nose on your shirt is the ultimate in support. 12 years on from the nose explosion I not only enjoy speaking but love it, it’s my full-time lifestyle taking me throughout New Zealand and more and more the world. So what scares you that in over-coming it could significantly enhance your career, your lifestyle? You could get there through identifying: What are your strengths? Spend the time focusing on what you can do, not what you can’t – writing and story telling were mine. What makes you different? The pink elephant in the room / the things that make you unique are your greatest assets – promote them with pride Find your mentors. These people can be formally introduced via a program, they can be read about, followed through Social Media, or sitting at the end of a phone number you have – embrace what they have through inspiring them with your dream. Local Restaurants: Rack n Roll Ribs

Retirement Living: Aria Bay

Not so new to Browns Bay! Retirement Village set right Rack n Roll Ribs originally spawned from the highly successful Serengeti Restaurant, founded in 2009 in Murrays Bay. Seeing the demand for ’takeaway’ ribs, the owners decided to open the Serengeti Rib Shack in Browns Bay in 2012. The taste sensation of the freshly made bastings and sauces used on the rib sets, and chicken cooked on order for freshness sets it apart as the next emerging takeaway of choice. After selling the Serengeti restaurant to focus on the Rib Shack, the outlet recently underwent a comprehensive facelift and re-opened under the new brand name “Rack n Roll Ribs, Hall Of Flame”. Many Bays people have either been to, or heard about the Rib Shack and some thought it had closed down. But we are happy to inform you that the same good food is still available at the same location but now just under the new brand name. Rack n Roll Ribs offer more than just Ribs. Pop in and try one of their delicious burgers or order from the range of different chicken dishes or be tempted by one of their sides like calamari. Their Chef runs a weekly special in store with items like 'Chicken Livers Peri Peri'. While the ribs are pretty special, all the other options are very good as well. Something for all the family! Rack n Roll Ribs is open daily from 11.30am and have some great lunch offers. They have also launched a new 'RnR Beach Box' which is a feast and caters for a minimum of four people.
