It was a bit of a strange sight, 7AM on a Monday morning outside of Sips Bottle Emporium in mid-November. A lovely lady in a formal gown with jewels, furs and long gloves stood at the door. Soon, other men and women in formal attire joined them. In all, seven of your fellow Benicians donated their time (and sleep) to help create the cover and inside photos for the Benicia Magazine Holiday Gift Guide.
California. A graduate of UC Davis (Class of 2022), KV initially planned to launch an online cocktail kit business but pivoted to creating a physical space after recognizing the potential of a nice store that was family friendly and filled the gap for what was unavailable in his hometown. He opened his first location, a charming Victorian carriage house, on November 18, 2022. Just one year later, Kuvin celebrated his business’s growth with a ribbon-cutting at a larger, more visible location at 736 1st St., featuring wine and bubbles from around the world, an extensive craft beer selection, bourbons, tequilas, craft soda, nostalgic candy, yummy treats, and a golf simulator.
Kuvin’s journey showcases the power of adaptability and the entrepreneurial drive to create a unique experience for the community. Sips is not just a bottle emporium. It’s a tribute for those who dare to dream.

Holiday Story
'Twas the night of the party...
They gathered to celebrate the holidays in a magical place, a space uber cool but vintage too. The room within a room opened to reveal a sparkling waterfall and chandelier. It was adorned with twinkling lights, a lovely view.
Oh yes, let’s not forget the walls of wine! Coltrane played Christmas and champagne was divine, appetizers for all made the evening sublime. They spoke of things far but mostly stayed near with thoughts of Benicia throughout the year.

KV welcomed all with a smile. "I’m so glad you could all make it to celebrate the season together in our beautiful town!" The guests gathered in the room full of wine, its centerpiece a stunning arrangement of red and gold ornaments reflecting the soft glow of candlelight.
As they settled in, the conversation naturally flowed towards Benicia's unique charm. "I love how this town has such a rich history," remarked Kevin, "It’s amazing to think about the days when it was a bustling shipbuilding hub. Now, it feels like a hidden gem."
"Absolutely," agreed Lynn, pouring herself a glass of wine. "The waterfront is breathtaking, especially at sunset. There’s something magical about watching the boats glide by with the hills in the background."
The guests nodded in agreement, sharing stories of their favorite spots—like the quaint shops on First Street and the stunning
views from the Benicia State Recreation Area. "And let’s not forget the community events! The Farmers’ Market is a highlight of my week when it’s in season," said Kenneth, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.
The conversation about the town's charm naturally shifted to its philanthropic spirit. "One of the things I admire most about Benicia is how the community always comes together to support those in need," Terrin shared, her voice filled with pride. "From food drives to local charity events, people here really care."
Dusty added, "I remember last year’s holiday fundraiser at the Museum of History, Benicia. It was incredible to see so many locals come out to support the cause, and I really loved the vintage cocktails! The town really rallies around organizations like the Benicia Community Action Council, Soroptimist International of Benicia Community Foundation…"
When friends gathered warmly... ...by
Bruce chimed in, "And let’s not forget the annual Benicia Art Walk, where a portion of the proceeds goes to local emerging artists and youth art. It’s a fantastic way to support our artists while giving back to the community."
Lynn smiled as she listened to her friends. "It’s heartwarming to see how philanthropy is woven into the fabric of our town. It makes the holidays even more special when we can help others while celebrating together."
The guests raised their glasses once more, toasting not just to Benicia, but to the spirit of giving that defined their town during the holiday season.
As the conversation at the holiday party continued, the guests eagerly shared their favorite local events that brought the community together throughout the year.
"Porchfest Benicia is my absolute favorite!" exclaimed Corlyn, her eyes lighting up. "It’s such a unique way to experience live music right on the porches of our neighbors. The atmosphere is so joyful!"
Bruce quickly added, "And the Torchlight Parade! I love how the locals put out their chairs and blankets the day before. The floats, the lights, the marching bands—it’s like a scene from a storybook, and it really kicks off summer."
"To Benicia! May it continue to thrive and bring us together for many more celebrations like this."
Kevin nodded in agreement, mentioning, "The Christmas Tree Lighting is another highlight. It’s such a lovely event where everyone gathers to celebrate the season. Watching the tree light up while surrounded by friends and family is truly magical."
As they reminisced, laughter filled the room, underscoring the sense of community that Benicia fostered. KV raised his glass, "To Benicia! May it continue to thrive and bring us together for many more celebrations like this."
With that, the guests clinked their glasses, their hearts warmed not only by the holiday spirit but also by the gift that is Benicia. B
'Twas the Night
Written by Mary Hand
'Twas the night of the party, in Benicia so bright, When friends gathered warmly, by the soft candlelight.
With cider a’brewing and snacks laid out neat, They laughed and they shared, in this festive retreat.
KV, the host, with a smile on his face, Welcomed each guest to his charming and cool place. They spoke of the history, the beauty, the cheer, Of a town that brought joy to all who lived near.
With stories of Porchfest, where music would play, And the Torchlight Parade that lit up the way.
The Christmas Tree Lighting, where hearts filled with glee, In a community rich with sweet harmony.
They toasted to Benicia, where kindness would bloom, In a town full of love, where friendships consume.
As the night wore on, they felt spirits soar high, In the heart of the season, beneath a starry sky. B
