Graphical Interface for Pictogram Comunication Devices In collaboration with the Swedish Institute for Special Needs Education (SIT) In this project were studied individuals with cognitive disabilities and their relation with an alternative way of communication based on pictograms. A graphical user interface for communication is developed as an application for a mail system that uses the pictograms as a main language. The challenge was to understand how the individuals with cognitive disabilities and caregivers understand and use pictograms and other systems for communication in their daily life. Caregivers, linguistics and experts were interviewed as part of the ethnographic research to obtain information.
syndrome, and that every person has different and specific skills that need to be treated individually, for that reason customizing becomes a very important concept for this project. Paper and digital prototypes were done to be tested by the users, and the comments on them seems to be promising. The final proposal is focused on the grammatical structure of a language and how can be applied to the mail system and is an approach on how can be solved the problem of sending digital mails by structuring coherent sentences in an easy way for the users.
The findings indicates that there is a big group of people with cognitive disabilities that includes: down syndrome, autism, and arspberger

Research The Booklet
Personal or individual booklets are used by each user, they contain their personal vocabulary and interests depicted on pictograms, mostly the caregivers put on them whatever works, a pictogram, an image of other existing systems or a photography that can be usefull to express what the user wants to say.

The final proposal of the graphical interface, it’s focused on the message composing. It is divided on two main parts: the writing section, and the pictogram library or personal notebook as it is shown in the image. The writing section is represented by a normal sheet of paper that can be customized for every user. The Pictogram library is represented by the same notebook concept that the users have to express their ideas, an article that is important for them and it is easily recognizable. This concepts were applied with the intention of being empathic, using real references from the world.

A single pictogram of happiness is located also in the left - bottom corner as an option to express emotions and the most used sentences or phrases.

When the user clicks on a pictogram it shows a sub-menu, that is the main proposal of the interface. The menu acts as a palette of possible options that are customized for each single pictogram, depending on which pictogram you select.

Understanding pictograms To relate better the abstract representations of the pictograms the user can choose by clicking the same icon over the blue background , between several realistic options of the same concept, and being more specific on the meaning of the pictogram while sending a message.

The realistic picture selected replace the original pictogram on the blue background to represent the option desired. The user can increase the library of realistic pictures by clicking the add symbol on the square or even take a picture that is saved directly on the library.

Jag Vill (I Want) is selected as option for the pictogram “Pizza” to form the sentence “ Jag Vill Pizza” (I Want Pizza).
To send the message, the user needs to press a button that appears over de sheet automatically. The sheet is transformed on an envelope that is sent to the person selected to receive the message.

F
To confirm or reject the expression, the user can select between the options Ja (yes) or Nej (no).
The process of sending the message is represented with an animation showing the envelope moving from the place of the sender, to the place of the person who receives the message. Animations are used as technique to represent events like - sending and receiving the message to make easy for the users to understand the process.

The sentence “Jag Vill Pizza” ( I Will Pizza) is formed and is written on the personal sheet in both pictogram language and normal written language.

Torre
Is a game proposed to improve communication between groups. The main goal of the game is to construct the highest tower between all the players involved with the exception that every player has a rule to construct the tower and nobody knows his/her own rule .
Instructions: To play the game it is included: A set of wooden blocks of different colors. A set of rule cards. A timer.
After correcting the movement, the second player will place another block from the pile of blocks so the third player can correct the second’s player movement and so on.
The game requires up to 4 players
The timer is set to 10 minutes for the first game, and the players can increase the challenge trying to construct the tower with less time.
Each player has to pick one rule card that is going to be the rule for the player on the right so no one knows their own rule. This rule written on every single card refers to a way to use the blocks, allowing the players to use only certain kinds of blocks differentiated by color, shape or the way the block has to be placed on the tower.
The players are involved in a dilemma whenever they can choose on each movement either helping other players knowing their rules by giving them clues when placing blocks or trying to reinforce the tower structure hoping to make the right movement.

The game starts after every player knew the rule of the player on their right side, that is on the card selected. One of the players starts constructing the tower by placing one block on the center of the table in a way that the next player on the left side will correct the first player’s movement in the case he/she broke the rule, the next player will remove the block from the table if the movement was wrong or just leave the block if it was right.
The objective of the game is that the players realize the difficulty of constructing a tower without knowing their own rules so they have to work in group in order to achieve the goal.

Design is a game He saw something in the street, - What is that? He said, a bear?, then we all approached to the window to see what was that strange animal, it was so big and with a dark fur, many questions and images came to my mind, about if there was possible the fact that a bear was walking on this part of the city, since as a foreign citizen I did not know what to expect of the savage and wild life of Sweden, a bear walking near to the school?, then we realized that this animal was walking besides a person, and that this big animal was only a special and weird race of dog very big. A part of me came back to the reality and I felt save and secure about going out the school without being aware of finding a bear in my way to the school or home, but the other part was disappointed to think that I had the possibility to see a real bear outside the school walking along the river. The dog continued walking along the river and we also continued working on our game, but now we had this strange experience, I think we were able to see the problem of designing a game with a different perspective or unless with a more fresh mind after being thinking of many different options without having success on any of them.

Approach
The activities related to cooking are diverse, from baking, moving, and taking care of the cooking food, require quite a lot concentration from the person who cooks, moreover, since cooking it is not the only activity at home, the attention begins to spread into the different activities, losing attention on the other ones, for this reason organization of these activities could be very helpful. A graphical experiment as an interface that helps you to be aware and organize the activities at home not only when cooking but also of your other daily activities as taking the bus, go shopping, knowing the temperature, and that also inform you about of the general use of the systems at home for the better use of them is proposed
