Shelter in the Forest Research Facility

Period 2016/I The landscape and architecture workshop has as main goal to acknowledge the natural characteristics from the “ Alto de san Miguel” natural Area. The purpose is to use such attributes to create a project that answers different scales, ranging from the Master plan to the architecture piece and technical details. The main contributions of this workshop are oriented to the multi-scale aspects of architecture and landscape. It is important to understand the architectural interventions as an immersed part of the development of a particular local landscape. The investigation shelter is a project that seeks in an academic and investigative way to attract the people from the city and make them to go deep into the forest. It attempts to preserve and enhance the nature of the zone trough expansion and creation of knowledge. Thus the project turns itself into a shelter in the forest that seeks to explore the surrounding context.

Understorey layer

The Shelter relates with its surrounding environment with the lowest possible impact. It grows into the forest meaning to reach every layer and entering each of them trough platforms. The structure expands itself vertically resembling the surrounding flora. It reaches each one of the strata layers of the forest which allows the project to connect with its context.

Service Area

LAB

A minimum space of 5x5 meters in each floor associates differently with the forest. Each floor focuses on enhancing the diverse dynamics of the nature around it as it ascends.

Context Section

The project is surrounded by a walkthrough that connects with the main path. This walkthrough has a regular geometry that makes it stand out against the heterogeneous, uncontrolled and abundant shapes of the forest.

The geometry of the project allows the user to view the surrounding and complex environment into a understandable and measurable human aspect. Aerial View

It creates a space that motivates knowledge and promotes the improvement and protection of the natural habitat involving the local population, explorers, students and science community.

Center of Rural Development Program 4th year Academic Workshop XII: Rural Configurations Honorable Mention

Period 2014/II The project is a center of cultural welfare placed at the intermediate between the urban center and the rural periphery of the town. The center intends to make interventions in rural municipalities in the department of Antioquia that enhance the importance of the rural and its farmer communities in social, economic, politic, cultural and spatial terms. Elderly, kids, tourists, sellers and artesans are welcomed to explore the classrooms, cinemas, meeting rooms, game rooms, commercial stores and sport facilities that compose the program. The building itself seeks to have a low visual impact to the users. It buries in the lot preserving the existing farmer house and making it its principal facade, modifying the program so the house becomes a showroom of the products that can grown and be made in the zone. Crops and agricultural activities are placed around the farmer house and above the project itself without altering the natural and original landscape.

Trough light and shadow the building implies the importance of the countryside making the farmers to observe again the beauty of their surroundings. It reminds them and the visitors the importance of the countryside and the local landscape . The classrooms and halls are designed to frame specific mountains, forest and communities.

The center is conceived as an equipment of multiple uses that functions as a space for the community. It is place that can develop productive, academic, ludic and sport activities. Thus, the productive and economic strength of the municipality grows trough social cohesion.

Acoustic Pavilion Sounds of the River Program 3rd year Honorable mention

Period 2014/I What is the sound of the Medellin River? The Project seeks to highlight, modify and amplify the sounds that are related to the river and the city. The Aburrá Valley is located in the south-central province of Antioquia in Colombia, amid the Central Andes. Medellin is a city ranked second in terms of population and importance in the country, where nine other municipalities are located there The valley has a large river that has become a hub for the historical development of the region. The water resources of the main channel of the basin are continuously exposed to human contamination.

Cross Plan

The discharges of domestic and industrial untreated wastewater, exploitation of materials in the channels and the slopes of the river and creeks, disposal of solid waste in the beds of streams, poor land use and deforestation around birth of streams that produce soil degradation by erosion and sedimentation processes. The project intends to give the river a voice. It seeks to make citizens conscious about the importance and problems of the most important natural landmark of the city.

Trough ephemeral structures, the project will create a new way to sense such an important and emblematic natural reference, which is sometimes forgotten and neglected by the city itself.

Ring Details

The prefabricated rings will be made with different materials, shapes and textures to make a path with different spaces that will create and reproduce different sounds depending on where they are placed and how they are built. The resounding experience will go from total quietness to the noisy chaos of the surrounding city.

Argelia School Bike Center facility Type Competition/Personal project/Professional Project

Year 2017 Tunjuelo River is one of the most important rivers of the city of Bogotá. It runs along 73 km long and is currently one of the considerably forgotten and neglected. The project answers to the river creating an environmental strip which will work both as public space and biological filter that helps control pollution and waste disposal.

The classrooms have the capacity to be flexible and expand or contract, as it is needed. Light is an important topic to the project; every space will have a natural light source as well as direct contact with the outside nature.

The School must answer successfully to the surrounding neighborhoods. These districts suffer form lack of the basic urban and public infrastructure. Thus the project has the opportunity to create new public space capable of supporting not only the students but also the inhabitants of its surroundings.

Memorial Pavilion Type International Competition/Personal Project

Period 2018/I The Pavilion is a geometric proposal that consist by an unbroken and uncrossed continuous line. It creates 3 different spaces with different attributes directed to the citizens. The line is presented as a 60mts long and 3mts high wall that belongs to the visitors as well as the ideas, sketches and essence expressed on it. The project works as an urban space of social, cultural and emotional interaction.

Trough the 3 shapes expressed on the continuous line, different activities such as exhibitions, talks and urban acts may occur. The citizens would have the opportunity to express their thoughts in this constantly transforming wall.

The pavilion may be reproduced trough the city working as a place for sharing and teaching information about earthquakes as well as urban meeting rooms and emergency meeting spots. It’s a space that works as a community habitat where citizens will be able to remember, learn about future action plans and have safe meeting points.

Year 2015 The competition commissioned an artistic intervention to the lobby of the building in the city of Mexico where the Architecture and art Magazine “LIGA” is located. The proposal is the reflection of several characteristics of the Latin American habitat. It observes a society that describes itself from the adaptations to spatial and landscape conditions. The quality of the proposal leads to recognize the existing relationship between geographic systems that determines the space and the social habitat phenomena in Latin America.

Year 2016 - 2018 The private competition consisted on creating a new facade for the “Núcleo de Operaciones de Visión Avanzada “(NOVA) Building created by the company CELSIA. The protection of the forest as regulator to the hydric cycle is very important to the generation of hydroelectric energy that represents 50% of the energy produced by CELSIA. Vegetation is a vital part of the proposal that works as a communication strategy as well as the improvement of the environmental conditions in the lot. A double skin facade shape different types of spaces creating integration between the facade system and the existing vegetation. The proposal allows the surroundings to be inhabited by the users creating a transition line between the interior and the exterior that works as a meeting space, resting garden or a venue. For the access threshold garden tropical dry frost vegetation is proposed, an ecosystem that correspond to the local environment that is currently one of the most threatened ecosystems in the country. December 20. 10:00 am

The facade system consists on a pergola and a double skin of prefabricated colored concrete that is supported by a slender metallic structure. The modular concrete system creates light and shadow variations during the day and year helping the building to control its energy consumption in a tropical warm environment.

Year 2014 The tropical Greenhouse of the Botanical Garden José Celestino Mutis is a space where environmental and cultural principles come together. The interaction between the visitors and the most representative ecosystems of the country creates a space of a high educational value that spreads the nature knowledge of the country.
