*About Me Since I was a child I have loved art and design. Education has taught me so much and heavily influenced the creative person I am today. University has been where I have seen the biggest progression in skill-set, digitally but most notably with my analogue practices. My publication composes what I consider to be my most valuable skills, all that have been born or improved while studying Graphic Design BA (Hons) at the University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury.

Research & Analysis Research and analysis is the first step in my process, and one of, if not the most important. I carry out both primary and secondary research to strengthen my knowledge, inspire myself and build a platform to answer briefs and create the best work I can. Analysing my research critically helps sieve through what is most important and valuable to my projects.

Presenting Presenting is something I find naturally quite challenging, but being prepared and creating a well organised, concise presentation makes this a lot easier. Creating an identity between slides creates continuity between them, showing the viewer a flow of ideas.

InDesign InDesign is a key skill in my arsenal as a graphic designer. I use it often to create my publications. I really enjoy editorial design, typography and image. InDesign allows me to combine these together, thinking carefully, paying close attention to the small details, and producing clean designs.

Grids Using grids throughout my design, through visuals and composition allows my work to look ordered and make sense. I first used grids after researching into the extremely popular Swiss graphic style, noting Joseph Muller-Brockman a key inspiration. A mixture of columns, rows, rules and baseline grids complete the frame for my work to be completed on.

Offset Printing Here is an example of a lithoprint, a type of offset printing. Lithograph printing is where an image of what you want to print is placed onto a plate which is covered in ink, then transferred onto mediums such as paper, card, wood and much more. I have achieved the prints above by placing newspaper with a cut out design, creating a stencil so that only the ink on show picks up and is printed. I experimented with the image making by taking pictures of my prints, and the newspaper stencil itself.

Photoshop Photoshop was the first of the Adobe software I learnt and I feel most confident using. I use Photoshop for a whole range of tasks, from picture editing, mock-ups, 3D, to finishing touches and most commonly completing final imagery that I have produced through a physical process. Merging both digital and analogue processes is a passion of mine, and something I believe makes up a big part of my creative identity as you’ll have seen evident throughout this booklet.

UI / UX Design My latest passion is UI and UX design, creating websites and applications. Adobe XD is my go to software to draft and produce websites / applications concepts, because of the integration with the Adobe suite and useful animation features. I have also started to try web based platforms including Cargo, the platform I use for my website and online portfolio.

Book Binding Nothing beats a printed publication or product. Publication and editorial design was something I had no interest in before further education, however I quickly found this passion after printing and binding my first book. There are a multitude of binding methods, all denoting a style or feel for the publication. Binding has more meaning than just to hold pages together, it completes the book.

Risograph Printing A risograph printer is a digital copier designed for high-volume photocopying and printing, originally released in Japan in 1980. Its bright fluorescent colours and opaque ink allows for a wide breadth of experimentation. It’s the facility I have used most at University because you can quickly change anything digital into an analogue asset. The half-tone, monotone print makes typography and image special.
