on November 1995, discussions have risen on the future of

OM

this prominent lot and it’s role within the city. With the ROM

the R

and Gardiner Museum located within the vicinity, a strong proposition is the development of a gallery building which would transform the intersection of Avenue Road and Queen’s Park into a destination of education and culture. ue aven

The Gallery of Craft and Fabrication places focus on the development process of art in it’s relation to the final product. A collaborative artist studio and workshop invites profession craftsman to create and display their works in the adjacent display spaces. The workshops and studio can also be utilized to hold lessons and demonstrations for the general public to better educate individuals on how different forms of art are developed.

TUBE 8 X 8 X 300 DESIGN COMPETITION: Tunnel Through Time The TUBE 8 X 8 X 300 design competition calls for the renovation and programming of an evacuation tunnel in an underground shopping center located within Kunming, China. Measuring 8m in width, 8m in height, and 300m in length, participants are able to utilize as much of the tunnel as needed while still allowing capacity within the space for evacuation in the event of an emergency.

Boasting 2 large sports training facilities within the city (the Hongta Sports Center and Haigeng National Training Center), Kunming has gained international recognition as a destination where many professional athletes travel to for high-altitude training. Tunnel Through Time draws on Kunming’s reputation as a city of athletes and seeks to transform the underutilized tunnel into a running track and gallery space that celebrates China’s history of sports on a global level. The renovated evacuation tunnel will become a destination that serves the local community and become a daily gathering space to residents of Kunming. Tunnel Through Time placed as a finalist in a submission pool of over 2000 applicants.

BURGER KING REBRAND Redefining brand elements from an iconic company With a health-conscious shift in the restaurant industry, a younger demographic is slowly deviating from fast food dining and instead, heading towards the fast-casual experience. Fast-casual restaurants are marketed to have higher quality cuisine than its fast food counterparts but at a lower price point than that of a casual dining eatery.

The aim of this design exercise was to analyze and redesign the Burger King brand as a fast-casual restaurant that would be able to compete in today’s restaurant scene. The rebrand would portray Burger King as a modern yet classic burger joint with that utilizes fresh ingredients with higher quality foods. Inspiration for the redesign was taken from the American diners found in the 1940s alongside modern restaurant chains that utilize simple but recognizable graphics and branding.

THE LOGO The new logo of should be one that is simple with recognition towards the food found at Burger King. Taking cues from the Spongebob Squarepants Krabby Patty and Paula Sher’s work on Shakeshack, the shape of a burger was taken and broken down into its simplest form. The use of serif text (Orpheus Pro) gives that sense of history to the brand while the sans serif (Brown) helps modernize compay. The end logo resulted in a design that has flexibility with different colors, and medium applications.

COLOR AND PATTERNING The brand colors were kept relatively simple, opting to make the crown pop with yellow against black and white. The patterning system was designed based off the checkered floors found in the American diner.

Hex code: #EAB83D

#231F20

#FFFFFF

To retain a sense of playfulness in the brand as burger joints are not fine dining, a character system was set up based off ingredients utilized BURGER KING

in Burger King’s food. The final characters were made from integrating food ingredients with chess pieces, merging the idea of “the king” with the checkered floor pattern. BURGER KING

WARMING HUT COMPETITION: Warming Nut

Warming Hut is an annual competition calling for the design of a small hut or installation on the River Trail at The Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Exploring how the sensation and idea of “warmth” could be translated visually, the team proposed Warming Nut, a small shelter composed of a steel frame and woven veneer strips. Warming Nut invites the public to find rest and reprieve from the winter environment.
