SHANGHAI OFFICE EXPANSION Fall 2011

ABOUT OPEN ARCHITECTURE OPEN is a experimental architecture studio based on research and collaboration centering on creating meaningful architecture by establishing new relatioships between nature and society. There is an intense investigation in architecture and cities in Asia (specifically China). The scope of work varies from small installations and the creation of a space for Columbia University (Studio X) to the master planning of a 1200000 m2 city in Inner Mongolia. OPEN architecture was founded by Li Hu and Wenjing Huang in 2002. Li Hu was a former partner at Steven Holl architects, founded the Beijing office, and was the partner in charge for Linked Hybrid in Beijing, Vanke Center in Shenzhen, Raffles City Chengdu, and Nanjing Sifang Art Museum.

The building was designed as open space that allows for multiprogrammatic flexibility for its users. It is organized by an ondulating roof/ground and five perforating courtyards that OUTDOOR SPACE appear to float amidst a field of ᅸ໪ぎ䯈 thin steel columns. The cross-sectional variation of the roof corresponds to the interior organization of the space. For example, when the roof sweeps down to grade, the space sinks to become a zone that can be an auditorium, projection room, or theater. Responsabilities: 3d modeling and rendering, presentation drawings for publication. CULTURAL COMPONENTS ᭛࣪‫ܗ‬㋴

TOWER OF 23 GARDENS Date: Firm: Location:

Fall 2010 / Spring 2011 OPEN Architecture Batou, Inner Mongolia

The project consists of an addition of three towers twenty three stories tall on top of a seven story commercial podium. All the towers contain seven sky gardens that are arranged as stacked boxes, each of them as a unique space with a unique stair. The seven boxes or modules are rearranged differently in each tower and as a result, make each tower different. Responsabilities: 3d modeling and rendering, physical models, DD drawings of atrium spaces.

LAGOS OCEANFRONT RESORT Date: Firm: Location:

Fall 2010 / Spring 2011 OPEN Architecture Lagos, Africa

The project adopted the cruise ship as a metaphor. Ships have the capaciy of keeping guests entertained 24/7 because of their programmatic diversity. The building is organized around three main concepts: the deck, the canyon, and the wave. The deck sits on top of a base composed of restaurants and lounges, staff services, and back of house. The idea of the deck works much like a cruise ship as an open gathering space. On top of the deck sits the wave, a thin deflected building where the guest rooms are located. The deflection brakes the monotony of a single loaded corridor and also adds variety to views. The canyon allows for breezes and provides an elevated street. Spaces with health, sports, shopping, and food services activate the street. The classical hotel typology is to insert all public programs and services on the base while this building offers a vertical strategy where public areas are elevated providing views to the ocean and a unique spatial experience. Responsabilities: Concept development and research.

HONGQIAO PLOT 3 NORTH Date: Firm: Location:

Summer 2011 SPARCH Shanghai, China

The project consists of twelve office buildings on the new Honqqiao transportation hub. The floor plates of the buildings are staggered to allow for public areas for leisure. The buildings are connected by a large plaza with colorful canopies and faceted green berms. The total GFA of the master plan was 196475 m2 which was a challenge considering that there were subplot requirements ranging from 34 - 43 m. As a result, there was the issue of how to work with a new typology of building with a lot of bulk. Responsabilities: Concept Development, 3d modeling and design, presentation drawings, and diagrams.

KUNSHAN REN MIN LU Date: Firm: Location:

Fall 2011 SPARCH Kunshan, China

The Ren Min Lu master plan consists of a highly diverse program of retail, food and beverage, SOHO towers, electronic stores, and residential towers all combined into one. In the existing site there was a large green zone and as a result the project began by creating a green link with the city onto this future urban project. Contorted strips of retail are at the base forming a canyon like central plaza. Residential and SOHO towers land on the horizontal retail strips. The SOHO towers have horizontal striations while the residential towers bias the vertical. An urban beam weaves through the towers and retail base allowing for a more permeable space. The urban beam is divided into two zones. On one part it is a park with an open lattice structure and on another area it is an enclosed retail space with the same lattice structure. Responsabilities: 3d modeling and design of landscaping features, presentation drawings, and diagrams.

SHANGHAI OFFICE EXPANSION Date: Firm: Location:

Fall 2011 SPARCH Shanghai, China

While at SPARCH, I was appointed to study the possibility of an expansion of the office from a 190 m2 space with a headcount of 27 to a new space of 397 m2 space that would have the flexibility to accomodate 40-50 people. A new space was surveyed and different layouts were studied. Responsabilities: Surveying and studying existing conditions, sketches, 3d modelling, and plans.

PHOTOGRAPHS FROM CHINA In my spare time I visited different towns and cities in China. In Beijing I had the chance to walk through the old fabric and experience the traditional hutong one story neighborhoods. At the same time, I experienced new dense building typologies like the Jian Wai Soho complex designed by Riken Yamamoto. An interest in ancient Chinese gardens led me to explore cities and towns like Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Zhouzhuang. I also explored the karst mountains in Guilin and Yangshuo in the deep South of China. Through word of mouth from locals and travellers, I was led to see the ancient town of Dali at the foothills of the Himalayes, and by the natural landscape with mountains, lakes, and rice fields and intrigued by a white minimalist architecture, so rare in China. From my experience, Dali and Suzhou are the only cities that diverged from the symmetrical ancient imperial architecture.
