01 Project Type: Astronomy Observatory & Treetop Walkway
Severndroog Castle
Year :
The Severendroog Castle is a beautiful brick Tower that was built in 1784 by the widow of Sir William James. The architect was Richard Jupp, and the style was de- scribed as “Triangular Gothic”. The Tower Castle was built to commemorate Sir William’s life and named af- ter the Capture of all of the pirate fortress of Sever- endroog, which took place in 1755. The tower is located in south-east London, at the highest point of shooters Hill in an area of public open Woodland. At 132 m the site is almost the highest point in Southeast London, and there are fantastic views from the roof. The castle is listed as a Grade II.

Originally the lower floor and first floor were housed with trophies of weapons and armour from Severendroog and other related memorabilia including pic- tures, a model of all his ships and the sword presented by the East India Company.

Issue : My intention for this proposal is to amend Severndroog Castle’s problematic affiliation with the East Indian Company. I want to transform the building’s identity from a monument that celebrates colonialism into one that looks forward and honours the future through research and exploration of the night sky.

Design Intent I propose an observatory built at London’s highest peak, Shooters Hill. A telescope will be installed and replacing the viewing platform of the Severndroog Castle. To compensate for the loss of the viewing platform and the tradition of scenic views from the castle. A forest walkway will extend from the court, which will allow visitors to walk among the treetops of the surrounding woodland and enjoy the spectacular scenery of London and the Greater London area.

The East India Company’s archives suggest its involvement in the slave trade began in 1684
Sir William James and his East India Company’s relationship is established. In 1747 he was headhunted by the British East India Company.
Severndroog Castle is built, just a year after William James’s death, on Shooter’s Hill in the parish of Eltham.
The company eventually came to rule large areas of India, exercising military power and assuming administrative functions. Company rule in India effectively began in 1757 after the Battle of Plassey and lasted until 1858.

Death of Sir William James East India Company The East India Company’s controversial history started when it was founded in the 16th century to take advantage of the burgeoning and highly profitable trade of spice around south Asia.
World Trade Dominance The company rose to account for half of the world’s trade during the mid-1700s and early 1800s.
Suvarnadurg Fort William James was put in charge of the British fleet at and in 1755, he captured the fortress of Suvarnadurg (Severndroog).
He died in 1783 of a stroke legend has it that this stroke was brought about when he read of the planned east india company act which in 1784 would formally bring all of the company’s political activities under the control of the british government

Concept / Process
Exploring Form In these concept models, I experimented with form using black foam sheets. Like the dome, I wanted to create structures that would blend in with the surrounding environment.
When working on the design concept model, I was influenced by Thomas Heatherick’s Gin Distillery for Bombay Sapphire. I wanted to create forms that would make their own separate identity from the hexagonal shaped castle. To contrast the hard edges of the building, I looked to organic shapes that would blend in with the naturalistic environment of the forest. I chose foam sheets because of their bendy properties. I played around constructing a model that was easily manipulated and created unique filamentous forms similar to what Thomas Heatherwick was able to develop in the framing that protrudes out of the building to form the botanical glasshouses.
Parti Diagram I designed a parti diagram to mimic the organic forms found in the forest environment in which the site is located.
Observatory Dome Concept Model I continued to use the idea of the dome and created a concept model that explored how panels may fit together. I then translated the model into a three-dimensional digital model.
Bannister Concept Sketch Considering the imagery I created with the foam sheets, I began to think about where in my design could I apply these forms. I concluded that they would be ideal for the bannisters of the treetop walkway.

3D Model Development During my design process, I used sketches and 3D modelling to experiment with the configuration of the viewing platform, treetop walkway, and the castle’s interior. I also experimented with how the materials would begin to look like in the design.

Massive transparent computer screens, where users can use hand gestures to control elements of the display. These screens serve as an information hub for Astronomy research that has both private and public access modes.

A screen is provided at ground level so that individuals with mobile disabilities can experience a live feed of the views from atop the castle.
A bookcase has been installed to display souvenirs that visitors can also purchase at the cafe.
Visitors can exit the castle from the second floor and proceed onto the treetop walkway and walk among the Castle Wood treetop back to the entrance to the park.

Dome panels that protect the telescope from the elements. The mechanical panels move in sync with changing the telescope’s orientation to allow the telescope to get a clear view of the sky.

Panel Movement The Panels are set upon mechanical rails that allow them to be oriented in various positions. For example, in the diagram, the panels are in an open and then closed place. Comput-er systems make it possible for the panels to position themselves in sync with the telescope’s movement to optimise the viewing clearance for the telescope.

Issue : A facility designed to promote the well-being of autistic children. The centre will include a waiting room, consultation room, kitchen and bathrooms for visitors.
Design Intent The facility is designed to promote the well-being of autistic children. Various sensory rooms are designed to engage a particular sense in a controlled setting that clinicians can analyse for a precise treatment regiment for calming an autistic child. The treatment centre is designed to be a playful environment for the child and a controlled environment to help autistic children self-regulate and self-modulate their behaviour.

The colour scheme of the autistic therC apy centre consists of pastel colours intended for low arousal. The space is devoid of complicated or fussy B sensory rooms are conpatterns. The panels in both the sensory room and the synesthesia room serve duel functions as an acoustic element reducing noise in the spaces and house lighting fixtures to create a calming atmosphere throughout the circular space.

Storyboard - Children Autistic Sensory Therapy Centre After the family is cleared, the receptionist escorts them down the stairs to sit in the waiting area.
A Family is entering the side entrance to the Ambika P3 on Marylebone Road. They have a young child that was recently diagnosed with autism and are here to consult with a specialist. Welcome!
The room’s lighting is configured to the vibrations and the sounds of the room, which makes the user feel they are wrapped in a world of sounds, lights, and vibrations. The clinicians are using the technology as a therapy to monitor and treat autistic children.
Wow a Playground!!
The environment is strategically designed to make the child feel safe and comfortable and promote a sense of well-being for both the parents and the child. The family is greeted by a receptionist, who begins to screen the family for covid-19. The area is safely secluded from the rest of the interiors of the Ambika. While the family is waiting for a nurse brings in the google box to entertain the children.
The doctor is ready to see you.
The clinician then invites the family into one of the private consultation rooms. Please come in.
Your kids can play with the google box while you wait.
The receptionist calls over the family, and they verify their appointment and then are greeted by the mental health clinician.

Google Box Trolley The “Google Box” is a trolley that is made up of five compartments. The centre compartment houses an air compressor that is used to inflate cartoon characters to surprise the children. Each container is intended to contain objects that cater to one of the human senses. The trolley is designed to be massed produced, and recognisable to children. It is made of durable plastic, with a glossy finish and bright primary colours.

Synaesthesia, a condition in which information is meant to stimulate one of your senses, stimulates your other senses. With this in mind, I assignedThe Google B Section colours to a particular sense, (yellow-smell, red-Scale 1:5 taste, blue-vision and green-touch). For example, in the red compartment, you can find candy, fruits and juice boxes. The blue compartment you will find sensory toys for sight, like mirrors balls, glowing balls and bubble tubes.
Containers can be separated from the base and allow a child to engage with the box and its contents separate from others if desired. The containers also can illuminate. They can glow in response to touch or if need be stay on when in dark environments.

Marketing Campaign The Octopus Chair Exhibit is fashioned to garner interest in the Maximo Riera Animal Collection. The Octopus Chair is the first chair of the collection and is being introduced in dramatic way emphasizing the dynamic design of the chair. The exhibit takes on the themes of the artist work by combining elements of the animal kingdom with architecture. There are two chairs displayed on both levels that visitors can sit and interact with. There will be a representative who will be giving presentations on the chair and the upcoming collection. The dynamic space and alien like atmosphere, as well as the live octopus are photo opportunities that will create more buzz for the collection.

The Spanish artist Maximo Riera designed ‘the octopus chair, a limited edition piece part of a larger collection entitled Animal Chairs. An exhibition is to be created at the Ambika P3, debuting the chair.
Design Intent For the Octopus Chair exhibit there is a large aquarium which contains a giant octopus. The base of the aquarium has a submerged chair that the octopus can interreact with. The aesthetic of the exhibit was created to pay tribute to the beauty and elegance of the creature. The lighting is utilized in a way to create a mysterious otherworldly atmosphere to the space to compliment the unconventional design of the chair.

I found this image of octopus to be interesting because it evoked the elegance of the anatomy of the tentacles so I used it as a basis for structuring the tentacles.
I did various sketches of tentacles and the anatomy of the suction cups that I would later apply to the design of the light fixtures.
On Rhino I experimented with various tentacle designs using a sketch as a reference.
I ultimately choose this space in the Ambika because I wanted an open space to display the octopus tank the I had settled on being in my proposal.
I found this version of the tentacles and the aquarium to be compelling and continued to develop it as the basis for my proposal.
In a effort to incorporate Maximo’s theme of octopus and chair, I experimented with the idea of having actual chairs in the tank. I also increased the size of the tank and played around with the idea of a ramp leading to a platform on the upper level of the aquarium.
I experimented with placement of the exhibit within the space. I would later continue to increase the size of the platform and consider glass floors to allow visitors to see the level down.
I continued to develop the design, experimenting with lighting on Rhino and pushing the design further by incorporating more tentacles into the structure of the exhibit. I ultimately raised the platform level to the mezzanine and considered spaces to display Maximo’s chair and a space to have presentations.

Sub Podium 3 Sub Podium 3 is where people can congregate and observe the octopus and the chair. On both levels there is one chair displayed that spectators can interact with. There are three monitors on the back wall where presentations about the chair are given.

Glass Platform There is a glass platform so people are able to see the details of the chair from the ground below. Observers on the glass platform are able to see the chair from above.
Lighting Lights that are the shape of octopus suction cups are situated under the tentacle platform. Along with the overhead lighting of the Ambika, they help to create the otherworldly atmosphere of the space.

Within in the school there is a taxidermy lab, class room and amphitheatre where instructors demonstrate taxidermy processes to students. The ethos of the school is to explore how artistry can be expressed in a world that has forgotten art.

The Ragged School Museum is located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The school is made up of three canalside buildings and was originally used as warehouses for goods transported along the Regents Canal. It would later be transformed into a school from 1877 to 1908. The ragged School Museum trust was established and the museum opened in the 1990’s.

I cut cardboard in the shape of picture frames to create a wall that may separate the taxidermy lab. The idea for the wall was influenced by the collage I created for a metaphor for a world where humanity has forgotten about art.

I was interested in incorporating the brick pattern into my design. Rather than having the bricks laid out linearly, I experimented with the pattern on a curve using Rhino 3D.
I experimented with clay to replicate the configuration of bricks used in the Chinese experimental pavilion. Working with the clay inspired me to incorporate a patterned brick wall on the second floor.

Design Intent The Proposal is a of the space is a mixed-reality virtual reality room. A person can interreact physically with a virtual world that they are perceiving through a headset that they would wear. As the person maneuvers in this virtual space a omni-directional crane supporting two textured panels follows and predicts the person’s movement as they negotiate through a maze for a game or a labyrinth for meditative purposes.

Design Development
To create the maquettes I restricted myself time to instinctively re-create scenes from the movie that I found interesting. It was my intent to capture the ferocity of the character Abigail and the line drawn between these two capable women. For Lady Sarah I associated character traits like; stoic, aristocratic,complex and well established in her class. For Abigail I linked descriptions like, organic, adaptable, sharp and aggressive.
I experimented first with clay and toothpicks to create a character model reiterating the personality notes of the two women. I liked the aesthetic of the cubes representing Lady Sarah so I developed that idea more with wood cubes I cut. For Abigail I thought it would be interesting to explore her character traits with foam and a hot wire. When I photographed the two materials character I wanted to convey the idea of them clashing with each other and competing for space. The movie that my proposal is based on is the Favourite. Using Rhino 3D I experimented with the orientation of the pillars within the space. I decided to keep the plan open allowing for people to circulate freely.

I added the cubes to both pillars to form a organic structure. I considered adding a glass wall with a door. But decided to keep it open to allow people to circulate through the space freely to the market.

I wanted to give a space a specific function so I added a omni-directional crane to the ceiling to allow for an apparatus that would support a mixed-reality virtual reality room.

I added a second apparatus for the second character. I was also considering replacing the cubic aesthetic within the interior something that is functional and compliments the VR room.

I replaced the cube panels with a mechanical mirror, which will mirror the movements of the people walking within the apparatus.
F I rendered the structures within the space to experiment with colour and materials.

The mechanical mirror was inspired by the Israeli-American artist, Daniel Rozin. He works in the area of interactive digital arts and creates large scale displays that recreate the viewer’s reflection by means of the manipulation of a multitude of tiles in a variety of materials, in effect turning these into physical pixels.1 1

Design Development - Sketching & Modelling I experimented with wire mesh and wire to see what forms I would be able to produce working with a model. The pliable nature of the metal mesh and wire inspired me to further explore the concept of climbing and began to think about the idea of replacing the wire with another material with similar material, which lead me to explore netting.

Uni-Tecture Furniture The proposal for my Uni-tecture is to create a fun environment where students can engage in activities that range from climbing to laying back and experiencing a landscape that feels as if you’re floating. The structure is shaped to have a organic aesthetic to it as a tribute to the Biology department of the school. Its unusual shape also is to inspire curiosity and exploration giving permission for people to release their inner child and playing socialise within the space. The Uni-tecture allows for communal hammocks that student can relax and sleep in.
