GMIT Students’ Union RAG Week Raises over €10,000 for Charity
GMIT Students’ Union RAG Week raised a total of approximately €10,000 for Serve, Aware, Special Olympics West, and the Irish Heart Foundation with more funds yet to come. The monies were raised through a series of events such as: • Moxegen (which embraced the spirit of the Summer festival, mud included)! • The Rubberbandits made an appearance in the Library Bar • A Dunk Tank on campus gave everyone the opportunity to soak the Sabbaticals • The ever-popular Bungee Jump saw a fantastic turnout despite the rain The Students’ Union had liaised with residents and Gardaí in the build-up to the week, as well as distributing leaflets on the Sshh Campaign (Silent Students Happy Homes), other student behaviour information and sensible drinking on campus as well as in the student villages. The Union had also continued with its effective Student Patrol Scheme throughout the week. See pages 5 & 18 for more!

It was a hugely successful week, with some of the highlights being the first ever GMIT Moxegen, The Rubberbandits, the Bungee Jump and the IT Factor. Again, thanks to everybody who contributed. A huge amount of work and effort went into to ensuring that all activities were effective, peaceful and carried out in a controlled environment. We are awaiting other figures to come from fundraising, but it is looking likely that we will beat our previous highest total. To date we have approximately €10,000 and we expect the final figure to be close to €15,000. And remember, there’s still the End of Year Ball on April 14th to look forward to, and we’ve just confirmed the Coronas for that, so it proves to be another memorable event! The IT Factor Song Contest during RAG Week also saw its most successful year ever. Hector ó hEochagáin was MC on the night with judges TG4’s Gemma Ní Chionnaith, Operation Transformation’s Ronan Scully and our very own Joe O’Connor. Winners on the night were Myles Kelly (pictured below) with the best cover song and Dáithí Jordan who won the best original song. And now, I’m delighted to announce that Myles WON the covers category of the NATIONAL I.T FACTOR Song Contest in Limerick IT, covering the Bruno Mars hit “Just The Way You Are”!!! It was a brilliant night down in Limerick and Myles now wins a two day recording session in a professional recording studio (SARMAR, Limerick), to add to the Galway Crystal and €250 he won at the Galway heat of this annual event.

Hey guys… I’d like to echo Colin’s comment on what was a brilliant RAG Week. Thanks to all the helpers who ensured that all the events ran so well, particularly the Moxegen festival which was a first for GMIT. What a brilliant day and night that was. We had liaised with residents and Gardaí to ensure it was possible for everyone to have a safe and enjoyable week, whilst avoiding anti-social behaviour. We continued with the effective Student Patrol Scheme throughout the week. Thanks to everybody for your support and we now look forward to the End of Year Ball on April 14th, which is sure to be a brilliant night! CONGRATULATIONS to Mylo Kelly for doing GMIT proud and winning the NATIONAL FINAL of The I.T FACTOR Song Contest in Limerick IT. He had very strong support down in Limerick and we’re all thrilled for him. Fair play as well to Dáithí Jordan who competed in the Originals category, having won the Galway heat during RAG Week. Finally, I’d encourage all students to get involved in the Students’ Union Elections and do come out and vote. It’s important to get a good turnout. It’s Your Union, Your Say, and nominations are now open. All the very best,

A brand new store has just opened in New York City that sells Husbands. When women go to choose a husband, they have to follow the instructions at the entrance: You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are 6 floors and the value of the products increase as you ascend the flights. You may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you CANNOT go back down except to exit the building. So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. The 1st floor sign on the door reads: Floor 1: These men have jobs. The 2nd floor sign reads: Floor 2: These men have Jobs and Love Kids. The 3rd floor sign reads: Floor 3: These men have Jobs, Love Kids and are extremely good looking.
12
“Wow,” she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going. She goes to the 4th floor and the sign reads: Floor 4: These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Good Looking and help with Housework. “Oh, mercy me!” she exclaims, “I can hardly stand it!” Still, she goes to the 5th floor and sign reads: Floor 5: These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Gorgeous, help with Housework and Have a Strong Romantic Streak. She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the 6th floor and the sign reads: Floor 6: You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store. To avoid gender bias charges, the store’s owner opens a New Wives store just across the street. The 1st first floor has wives that love sex. The 2nd floor has wives that love sex and have money. The 3rd,4th, 5th and 6th floors have never been visited.
Cockroaches can live for 9 days after their head has been cut off. 19th century biologist Sir John Lubbock experimented on ants by getting them drunk. He discovered that sober ants would carry their drunken ant comrades back to their nest, if they were from the same colony – but they would throw drunk strangers into the ditch. The electric chair was invented by a dentist. You share your birthday with at least 9 million people. Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing. No word in the English language rhymes with orange, month, silver or purple.

Clarification
— In an Advertiser article on the student disorder which emanated from NUI, Galway College Week last week, due to a typographical error in one instance it was stated that the event was GMIT College Week. This was not the case. GMIT college week ran successfully and without incident last month. The Advertiser is happy to clarify this.

Annual Conor Sweeney Engineering Soccer Tournament in aid of Cope. The annual Conor Sweeney Engineering Soccer Tournament was held during Raise and Give Week at the Mervue United facility. For the first time, all three Departments in the School of Engineering: Civil and Construction, Electronic and Mechanical and Industrial, were represented. Engineering staff made up one of the eight teams. Shock waves went through the tournament when the aging staff team held out for a 1-1 draw against the much fancied Galacticos Internacionales , from Croatia, Spain GMIT Students’ Union President Colin Canny presents Energy Engineering with the and France. With keeper Liam Morris Conor Sweeny plaque and hoodies. leaping at balls like a gazelle, and his greying team mates snapping like badgers at the heels of the students, the staff rolled back the years. With arthritis limiting their abilities to take sharp turns, they spent much of the time barreling around the pitches and bouncing back into play off the surrounding cages, frequently making contact with the ball. Captain PJ McAllen led from the front with a display of true grit, while Paul Tierney and Shane Newell were solid in midfield and Kevin Barrett held the line in defense. Energy 2 & 3 topped Group 1, winning all their games and scoring 12 goals on the way. Group 2 proved to be intensely competitive, with a penalty shoot-out being required to separate the top two teams and send Civil 5 into the final. The final was a very close affair for long periods. However, the Energy Engineers had more power in the tank and eventually put the pedal to the metal and drove on to a comfortable 6-1 win over Louis Page’s men. For the Energy lads, Cathal Rourke played a solid role at the back, while Darren Clabby impressed on the wings. Close interplay between Mark Gillan and David Parker led to scores from the captain, while Kieran Hannify and Daniel Rogers were magnificent in midfield. The tournament was organised by Paul O’Dowd of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department and Eoin Cahalan of the Engineering Society. The FAI’s games promotion officer, David Hand, provided expert technical and organisational assistance, as well as help with refereeing and with equipment. Tournament prizes were presented by the Student Union President, Colin Canny, and Vice President Joe O’Connor. The Students Union’s Brendan Kenny also helped with the promotion of the event.

Eoin Murphy - a 2nd year Event Management student in GMIT - flew through his heats in small but challenging waves with clean lines and tight turns. The men’s open final was the last event of the weekend and as luck would have it, the four finalists were in the water for the best waves of the weekend. Eoin eventually surfed his way into second position, claiming the silver medal. Also representing GMIT, Padraic Alan O’Conaire (currently completing an Access course at the college) claimed second place in the body boarding category. He scored high due marks due to his very technical 360 turns and clean lines.

The University of Ulster Coleraine played host to the Irish Surf Intervarsities on the weekend of the 20th/21st of February. While wave conditions were not ideal for the event, officials decided to go ahead with the competition. Saturday afternoon saw the novice heats take place in small waves, whilst all other categories were slotted into a busy Sunday. This meant that all competitors would have to show their best skills on the day to shine for the judges.

MUMPS Important health announcement for all students There has been an increase nationally in the cases of mumps in third level colleges. This is happening because many young adults aged 18-25 years have not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine. Mumps is an acute viral illness that causes fever, headache and painful swollen glands. It is spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes, and can also be transmitted by direct contact through saliva (kissing). This illness has the potential to disrupt the education of a large number of students. Complications can include meningitis, deafness, and inflammation of the testicles in adult males.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU CHECK WITH YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED 2 MMR VACCINES: If you have received 1 vaccine your own GP will give you a 2nd vaccine FREE If you are not sure if you have had the MMR before, having another one won’t do you any harm. The GMIT Student Health Unit can help you with information on this issue. However; we do not have your MMR records, or the capacity to deal with all students.
