Well Its hard to believe that it is that time of year again!! The SU elections are upon us once more and it is a little over 12 months since the last sabbatical elections here in GMIT. My how time flies!!! :-) Firstly I must say it has been an absolute pleasure to represent you all this year as President and I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported me last year at this point and throughout the last few months. Moving on to this years election I would just like to wish all of the candidates the very best of luck and I hope that all the hard work and efforts pay off on April 7th. I can only imagine the pressure that each of you are under so make sure to enjoy the campaign while it lasts. Finally to all of the student body we are launching a “Get Out and Vote campaign in the days leading up to the election and I would be delighted if there is anyone who might be interested in taking part in the event to please drop me a mail at supresident@gmit .ie or call down to the SU office to collect a tee-shirt. Remember it is important that you use your vote and make your voice heard in the election so that the right candidates are elected to represent you all next year! Carefully read all of the manifestos and make sure to speak with the candidates if you have any questions or queries as they are the people who will be your voice on academic council and Governing body next year.

Make your Mark on 10th April Wherever you sleep overnight on Sunday April 10th is where you should be included on a census form, whether that’s in your family home, your apartment or if you are staying with a friend. As you read this, 5,000 Census Enumerators are delivering census forms all over the country. They will be visiting every home, apartment and residence in the country making sure that each has a Census form and that the householder is happy they know how to fill it out. The Census of Population, to give it its proper title, takes place every five years and the next one will take place on Sunday April 10th. This is a very important time for Ireland. As a society we are faced now with making crucial decisions about our future and it is imperative that we have accurate and objective information on which to base those decisions. The Census is the most comprehensive and valuable of these information sources. The Census will give a comprehensive picture of our social and living conditions in 2011. Only a census can provide such complete detail right down to the smallest area and the results are an essential tool for effective policy, planning and decision making purposes. It provides the knowledge so that public resources can be shared evenly across the country and to ensure that services at local level are relevant to all the people who live there. As well as collecting information on the age and sex of the population, a range of different questions relating to households and individuals are also asked such as where and what people work at, how people travel to work, school and college, languages spoken, disabilities, families, housing, education and skills and lots more. This provides information which will help identify the young population and their education needs. It provides information on education and skills at national, regional and local level which employers and prospective employers can use when making decisions about investment and jobs. Census enumerators will call to collect the completed forms in the three to four weeks after Census Night. All census enumerators will be wearing clearly marked reflective jackets and will be carrying I.D. The main household census form caters for up to six persons present in the household on Census night. If there are more than six people present in your household on Census night your enumerator will provide you with additional forms. Everyone is counted wherever they happen to be on Census night. So, if you are staying away from home on Census night, you must complete the census form wherever you stay on that night. For example if you are a student who lives away from home in an apartment or sharing a house, you need to do the following: • If you are staying at home with your family on census night you should be included as normal in the census form • If you are staying away from your family home, please complete the census form wherever you spend the night and in replying to Question 7 “Where do you usually live?” enter your home address. You will also need to be included as an absent person in the census form that is completed in your family home under the section for ‘Absent persons who usually live in the household’ on Page 22 of the form. There are 30 questions on the form which must be answered. In addition there are 11 household questions which the householder must answer relating to the household’s accommodation. If you are a student sharing accommodation with other students, you can agree between the residents who will complete this section of the form. You may need to talk to your landlord or a neighbour to find out some of the information about when the house or apartment was first built and some of the other accommodation questions. The Census information is strictly confidential and will be used for statistical purposes only – this is guaranteed by law. No other Government Department or Agency has access to the identifiable information relating to individuals or households collected in the Census. The need for confidentiality is stressed in the training of census field staff and all are made fully aware of their legal obligations in this respect. Various resources have been made available to assist people with filling out the census form including large print, Braille and audio versions of the form. For those whose first language is not English a translation of the census form is available in the following 21 languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Estonian, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swahili, Urdu and Yoruba. All of these resources and much more information about the census are available on the census website at www.census.ie. And of course, census enumerators will be happy to assist with answering any questions when they call to deliver and collect the form. We would urge all students to fill in their Census form on Census night. By participating in the Census you are giving us the information we need now to understand what Ireland needs for the future.

SUMeetELECTION the Candidates PRESIDENT CANDIDATES Colman Hands

Masters in Environmental Systems Hi, my name is Colman Hands and I am appealing to you to please support me with your NO.1 vote on April 7th in my election to become next year’s President. Over the years as a student here in GMIT, I feel I have acquired the necessary experience and know-how to fight for every student on every issue from education to welfare and help in improving the overall student experience here in GMIT. The main points I wish to address as President are fees, grants, facilities and increasing the profile of the student union. I am running for the position of Student Union President as I believe it is the position in which I would be best equipped to offer my assistance GMIT and it‘s students. I have gained invaluable experience, while studying here in GMIT for the past 5years, in developing my organisational, leadership, authoritative and innovative skills which I plan to whole heartily apply to the position of Student Union President. I have previously done so, successfully, in my roles as Class Representative for 5 years and as part as the students union entertainment working group this year. Thanks for Your Time Think Different Vote Colman Hands

Joe O’Connor Current Vice President

My name is Joe O’Connor, currently Vice-President and Welfare Officer of the Students’ Union. Over the past 9 months, I feel I have accumulated the necessary skills and experience to be an effective President of the SU, and take the Union to the next level. In representing students, I have always sought to display a high level of energy and work ethic, and a strong voice both on college boards and committees and nationally. My entire manifesto, containing my ideas and plans should I get elected, is available on the website joeforpresident2011.com Please take a look and feel free to approach me with any questions or issues you may have. I feel I am ready for this challenge and am passionate about the work I do, so please Vote Joe O’Connor #1 for SU President on April 7th.

SUMeetELECTION the Candidates VICE PRESIDENT & WELFARE OFFICER CANDIDATES Mairead Campbell

4th Year, Business and Communications Hey guys, My name is Mairead Campbell and I am in 4th year in Gnó agus Cumarsaid (Business and Communications). I am 21 years old from Galway. I have been in the students unions for the past three years as the Irish Language Officer and spent this year on the Welfare Committee. In 2009 I was awarded Student Advocate of the year in GMIT and I feel that my experience to date would help me in the position. I love GMIT and have thoroughly enjoyed going to college here, but along the way I have noticed some issues that need changing. This is why I have decided to run for vice president and welfare officer. I believe the role is one that should be filled by someone who is approachable, non judgmental friendly, organized and hard working. I believe I possess these skills and have the experience and the hunger to fill this position. My manifesto discusses the issues I will tackle if elected. On the 7th of April, you will vote in a new Vice President and Welfare Officer and I would be honored to fulfill this role so please Vote Campbell no.1.

Alan Doherty Bachelor of Business

Hi guys, my name is Alan “Dots” Doherty. As your Welfare Officer, I will work hard to make sure the best interests of the student body of GMIT are maintained on a daily basis. Having obtained the necessary experience this year within the Welfare working group, I now feel I have what it takes to succeed at the Job if elected. My Manifesto is written with the average student in mind. My main aims are the Introduction and upkeep of a new student complaints procedure, the realistic extension of Library opening hours around exam time and focusing Welfare campaigns on Student Finance and Money Management. Other issues I have tackled in my Manifesto include online registration, fighting fees and entertainment that includes the entire student body. All of my other policy changes are available throughout the college and available online. I am very passionate about GMIT and serious about this election and this job. I want people to vote for me because they see me as a dedicated, down to earth, approachable character who if elected would represent each and every student well and would not shy away from any issues. So on April 7th, please vote Alan “Dots” Doherty No.1 for Vice and Welfare or your highest Preference and Join the Dots!

17

SU ELECTION 2011 VICE PRESIDENT & WELFARE OFFICER CANDIDATES Luke Hands

Master’s in Environmental Systems My name is Luke Hands. I’m running for the position of the student union Vice president and Welfare officer as I feel due to the length of time I have been studying here along with my involvement with the student union on the entertainment side of things this year, my experience and skills developed here in GMIT can make the changes us as student here need. There are many areas that need to be addressed, for example the stress factor of students. A greater less stress more success campaign needs to be developed which works all year round not just at exam times. The links between mental health and suicide cannot be dismissed. Suicide within our age group is at a serious concern especially in the county. An infrastructure is needed to ensure each and every student has a friend to talk to and this includes an anonymous Phone line that every student can use if in need at any time of the day or night. Road safety is an area that has been overlooked for far too long. I want to ensure every student can receive a 20 percent discount along with a free break check when producing your GMIT student card. So I’m asking you all to please VOTE for me LUKE HANDS NO.1 FOR VICE PRESIDENT ON THE 7TH OF APRIL.

Zaheer Javaid-Iqbal Bachelor of Business (Hons)

During my four years here I have been fortunate enough to have had good dealings with the Students Union, having been a Class Rep twice, as well as simply being a student of G.M.I.T. Having these opportunities has allowed me to experience both positive and negative aspects of the Students Union as well as the college. As Class Rep I have always led by example and provided all students with any assistance that they may have required. This year, I led the fight to get the Exam Rule overturned. I started a petition of over 200 students, met with Joe O’Connor on numerous occasions and even lobbied some lecturers. Together we created the movement that would change the lives of many students. There is no better person for the job. I am friendly, approachable, determined and committed to making your year at G.M.I.T the best year ever. I believe that I have the enthusiasm, passion and the willingness to work with the student body and to go that extra mile to make your student experience the best it could be. I want to be the Voice of the Students and represent YOU to the best of my ability. G.M.I.T can be Better. G.M.I.T WILL be Better It’s time to “Bring in the Z”

18

SUMeetELECTION the Candidates VICE PRESIDENT & WELFARE OFFICER CANDIDATES Brian Quinlivan Industrial Engineering

I am a 22 year old forth year student in G.M.I.T. I believe that I have the motivation and determination to represent the students of G.M.I.T. as Student Union Vice president and Welfare Officer at a time when student welfare is of the upmost importance. I am confident that I will make an excellent Student Union Vice President and Welfare Officer because I am ambitious, driven and passionate about providing the students of G.M.I.T. with a capable and promising voice for the year ahead. I have an approachable personality, which I think is very important for a student welfare officer as students need to have their voices heard and requirements catered for. Financial cut backs in education have inflicted on all students from the five G.M.I.T. campuses. Course materials and facilities have been reduced, this issue requires immediate attention and I am adamant that this issue be addressed as soon as possible. Please exercise your right to vote, as it is important to have your say on Election Day!! I have the best interests of the students’ of G.M.I.T. at heart and will represent you to the best of my ability!!

MUMPS Important health announcement for all students There has been an increase nationally in the cases of mumps in third level colleges. This is happening because many young adults aged 18-25 years have not received two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine. Mumps is an acute viral illness that causes fever, headache and painful swollen glands. It is spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes, and can also be transmitted by direct contact through saliva (kissing). This illness has the potential to disrupt the education of a large number of students. Complications can include meningitis, deafness, and inflammation of the testicles in adult males.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU CHECK WITH YOUR FAMILY DOCTOR THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED 2 MMR VACCINES: If you have received 1 vaccine your own GP will give you a 2nd vaccine FREE If you are not sure if you have had the MMR before, having another one won’t do you any harm. The GMIT Student Health Unit can help you with information on this issue. However; we do not have your MMR records, or the capacity to deal with all students.
