To create a better communal living experience, an opportunistic space (the courtyard) is defined to help harmonize the Living, Studying and Working conditions of the student researchers. Shipping containers are repurposed into portable dormitories while biofuel crops are grown on-site for the purpose of researching ways to reduce the carbon footprint of airplanes.

Once a prosperous neighborhood, the Fifth Ward has declined over time due to the combined impact of freeway construction, disinvestment, and redlining. Today, the effects on the neighborhood are still prevalent, evident in the high poverty rates, increased vacancy, and declined population. This project aims to strengthen the community by offering its occupants affordable housing that caters to the needs of different age groups.
