[RIC RESEARCH HOSPITAL] _Introduction

The ARCH 573 project is a Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) Research Hospital. The project is located in the Streeterville neighborhood adjacent to the Northwestern medical campus. The program includes inpatient and outpatient services, medical offices, and public areas for patient families and friends. Retail space and a hotel for future expansion have been added to create a mixed-use building that provides a better experience for visitors. Inpatient services are divided into seven "neighborhoods" each focused on a particular discipline. Collaboration between these disciplines is essential to unifying the research component of the building. The primary architectural goal of the project is to generate an integrative design that combines the architectural, structural, and mechanical systems into one unit. In conjunction with this is the goal to create the best possible experience for building visitors whether they be patients, family, or RIC employees. Analysis on site, climate, and building systems has been completed to make these goals a realization. The RIC mission is to provide the highest-quality patient care through integrated research, scientific discovery, and education for the purpose of maximizing the recovery of the individuals in their care. With integration at its core, this project works to produce a seamless medical research facility that will be a significant asset to the city.

The preliminary architectural, structural, mechanical, and enclosure systems were presented along with project goals and site analysis. During discussion, issues with the design were examined and possible solutions were offered. The pros and cons of each solution were explained, and the optimal solution to each major problem was identified. The following issues discussed and conclusions reached are to be thoughtfully considered for the final design review on December 6th, 2013. 71 [RIC RESEARCH HOSPITAL] _Appendix A-Meeting Minutes 

Parking - Consider using transfer beams to reduce the number of columns on the parking levels and ground floor - Add ADA parking spaces to parking garage - Design parking garage screen to be an active element on the facades

Ground Floor Lobby - Add more functions - Relocate lobby desk off-center and away from the elevators - Change swinging doors to sliding doors - Adjust the drop-off exit so it is not as close to the intersection of Ontario and McClurg - Design lobby to have a science and technology aesthetic and create an all encompassing environment - Relocate gift shop to a less public location (replace with coffee shop)

Sky Lobby - Relocate pharmacy to a more private location - Engage the chapel with the rest of the sky lobby (give it more attention) - Relocate hotel desk to center floor - Avoid placing main functions in corners - Provide a transition space for the express elevators - Create views between other buildings - Celebrate stair by giving it a more central location - Extend the mezzanine out on the north end to provide a unique spatial experience

72 [RIC RESEARCH HOSPITAL] _Appendix A-Meeting Minutes 

Inpatient Floors - Adjust location of inpatient reception - Relocate east stair -Provide four inpatient elevators -Create a buffer between inpatient rooms and ability labs - Rearrange patient rooms so they do not open up onto public space - Free up space on inpatient floors - Explore how the program can influence the form - Open up the corners to create usable space - Explore the possibilities of the outdoor spaces - Relocate patient room doors to a more accessible location

Exterior - Explore systems that allow air into mechanical spaces without disrupting the exterior appearance

General - Expand core for structure and add elevators for efficiency - Enlarge east mechanical shafts - Create ceiling and electric lighting schemes - Reduce corridor space
