Welcome TO

the Dominion Magazine Dear Reader,

With this edition we have published twelve issues of The Dominion Magazine, our official HOA magazine. It has been a fun, although sometimes challenging, process getting the magazine off the ground and running. We are very proud of the magazine and hope you all are as well. We have featured a great group of homeowners, homes, charities, students, staff members, informative HOA and Dominion Country Club information and much, much more. Please check out the article outlining The Clubs within the Club. Many have been inactive for the summer but will be starting back this month. Read through and see which one might interest you! The fall events kick off with the Pool Closing Party on September 7, with both Club members and residents invited to celebrate the end of summer and return to school of our youngest residents and members. The Homeowners Association events start back up in October with a full slate of activities, so be sure and watch the magazine for dates and not miss any of the fun. With school back in session, please take extra care when driving in the neighborhood and pay attention when the school buses are picking up and dropping off the children. Thank you all for your support of our Homeowner’s Association publication and a special thanks to all of the residents who have participated!

committee update By rob mcdaniel, general manager of the dhoa

The Neighborhood Outreach Committee (NOC) is gearing up for a full calendar of fall events. The Dominion will host various events ranging from events planned for our Community to step outside and meet and mingle with neighbors at National Night Out, events for our fourlegged furry friends at Doggie Costume Party, kids’ spooky gathering for Halloween Trunk or Treat and much more. We look forward to seeing you at all of the fall events. The Security Committee is working on new procedures. Traffic citations are being mailed to residents. Officers will begin the use of body cameras and dash cameras in vehicles. The Security Committee is continuing to work on enforcement of speeders and stop sign runners. The Landscape Committee will be renovating the islands on Dominion Drive at Prior’s Way and Cotswold this fall, as well as several other sites. The Committee is still making plans and decisions about which 28

S EPT EM BER 2015

other areas to address for fall and spring planting projects. Although there remain many areas that need attention, the Committee would like to hear from residents who might have some particular areas in mind. Please contact Julie Rincon at the HOA office or Sandy Marquez (smarquez2148@gmail.com) with any suggestions. The Finance Committee is diligently working on preparing 2016 Budgets. The operating budget includes landscape maintenance, maintenance of streets, bridges, drainage areas, security, legal, social events and other common area expenses. They also prepare a budget that includes major future capital expenses such as street repairs and landscape renovation. Revenue to pay for all expenses comes from your monthly assessments, architectural control review fees, permit fees and a one-time new homeowner fee. We anticipate receiving 3 bids from contractors in the next week for street repairs to be completed by the end of the year.

national night out National Night Out (NNO) is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. The first National Night Out took place on Tuesday, August 7th, 1984. That first year, 2.5 million neighbors took part across 400 communities in 23 states. National Night Out now involves over 38.1 million people and 16,540 communities from all fifty states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. Neighborhoods across the nation host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and other various community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel and exhibits. (https://natw.org/about) In The Dominion, neighborhoods gather at common area parks or in a neighbor’s driveway to enjoy a pot-luck dinner with neighbors and friends. Last year, in October 2014, we had 11 neighborhoods gather for 7 events throughout the community. The San Antonio Fire Department brought out their fire trucks and Sparky the Fire Dog even visited and took photos with the kids! It was a great evening with laughs, tasty treats and fun for the kids. This year we encourage all neighborhoods to participate either by hosting an individual event, or combining forces with another neighborhood to host a larger gathering. Events can be as small and intimate or as extravagant as you wish. Again, the goal of NNO is to come out of your home and spend the evening meeting and mingling with neighbors. Please contact your Neighborhood Outreach Committee representative or the HOA for more information on organizing or attending an event.

SE PT EM BER 2015

at McMahan was a small town boy with big dreams. Growing up in the sleepy town of Lometa, Texas, about two and a half hours north of San Antonio. Pat had always been a Longhorn fan and aspired to attend the University of Texas with the intention of becoming a bank president. Before graduating from high school in 1971, Pat met Cheryl during the summer of 1970. Cheryl lived in Lampasas, another small town 16 miles from Lometa. “Everybody in Lometa was either ugly or kin to me or both, so I had to go out of town to date,” jokes Pat. The two continued to date when Pat began his college career at UT as an accounting major. Pat wasted no time after college graduation. Within a month, he married Cheryl and started his first job of his banking career as a national bank examiner. Six months later, the company transferred him to San Antonio in July of 1975. He eventually left his banking career in 1990 to join the insurance business, working for a large insurance firm, which he eventually left with a couple of other colleagues to form what is now known as Alamo Insurance Group. As the CEO of the business, Pat and his partners experienced tremendous success and ended up selling the company to a national insurance brokerage firm known as Brown & Brown in 2009. Pat kept his position as CEO and has been a member of the Brown & Brown company ever since. While Pat’s career hit the ground running, he and Cheryl also welcomed two children into their lives; their son, Chris and daughter, Meredith. Both children also attended their father’s beloved alma mater.

Hook ‘Em Anyone who knows Pat can tell you about his UT Longhorn fanaticism. Whether you’ve been to his home or office, seen his

golf cart around the neighborhood or been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of his decked out, burnt orange trailer that they use for tailgating, it’s apparent that the McMahans are the real deal. Although Pat grew up a diehard Longhorn fan, his devotion to UT grew even deeper when he received a call from the UT football coach, Fred Akers in 1980. Fred asked Pat to help him raise money for UT Athletics and Pat willingly obliged. Pat organized golf tournaments in San Antonio every year between 1980 and 1986 to help raise money. When Akers left UT in 1986, Pat was then called by the Athletic Director and asked if he would charter a San Antonio Longhorn Club. He has now been on the UT Longhorn Foundation Advisory Council since 1987; the only person from San Antonio to be involved for that many consecutive years. Pat also spends a lot of his free time by making regular trips to UT with Cheryl. They have had the same seats at UT football games since 1980.

Not-So-Hidden Talent Pat found a real passion in fundraising once his career began in San Antonio, seeing how many area bankers got involved with the community and attended charity events. There was an auction at one of the first events he attended and he noticed that the auctioneer wasn’t very good. He found that this was a skill he possessed and could donate to future charity auctions. The livestock auction barn was 300 yards from Pat’s childhood home in Lometa, so Pat took to auctioneering as early as the fourth grade. “My grandfather worked at the auction barn, so I would go with him and study the auctioneer,” Pat says. “When the auction was over, I’d get up there and start imitating the auctioneer.” He auctioneered at his first estate sale in Oklahoma in the eighth grade, and started doing cattle and sheep auctions in other small towns surrounding Lometa.

T h e D o m i n i o n -M a g a z i n e . c o m

37

After Pat volunteered as an auctioneer at his first charity auction, the phone started ringing off of the hook and people began lining up for his auctioneering services to benefit various charities in the area. He began auctioneering at around 30 charity auctions per year, on purely volunteered time. “I’m helping charities and it’s part of my contribution to the area and the community. I’ve also met a lot of people which helped me business-wise and I love doing it. Cheryl used to go with me to all of them, but I kind of burned her out many years ago.” Pat has since had to cut back to doing only 20 events a year now.

Golf for a Cause As you would suspect, Pat is on a number of charity boards. One of the boards he is heavily involved with is Golf San Antonio, a nonprofit that ran the Texas Open for years and has always run the city championships. “One day I just came up with this idea to put the best San Antonio

38

SE PT EM BER 2015

amateurs against the best Austin amateurs in a Ryder Cup format that does several things: raise money for charity and generate a lot more players to earn points to play in the event. A lot of these players who weren’t playing in city championships before, country club players or what have you; these top players that want to play and represent San Antonio. They can’t represent their country or their state, but they can represent their city.” Pat approached Rudy’s BBQ and the restaurant has now been the title sponsor since day one. And so the Rudy’s I-35 Cup was born. The event has raised and donated over $300,000 toward The First Tee of Greater San Antonio, Capital Area Food Bank of Texas and Africa New Life since its inception six years ago. He says, “It’s accomplished everything we wanted it to and more.” Pat has been the Captain of San Antonio’s team each year. This year’s tournament will take place on November 6-8 at the Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club. San Antonio lost for the first time in 2014, so they are going to give it all they have to get the Cup back this year.

Texas’ Best Kept Secret Pat has the opportunity to travel to many places with his insurance career, and with his fervent love of UT, one has to wonder why he chose to call San Antonio home. “We’ve always loved San Antonio! I consider it a big little town; it’s slow paced. It is the perfect fit for us. It’s a two-hour drive to our hometown, an hour drive to UT, we’ve got the Spurs here and great golfing weather year-round; we’ve got everything! Living in San Antonio is one of the best kept secrets.” The couple didn’t move into The Dominion until 2007, but have been Dominion Country Club members since 1985; 30 years! Pat recalls being present when the Clubhouse officially opened its doors. Pat has been involved in The Dominion golf committees, using his auctioneering skills and playing in tournaments. Before moving to The Dominion, Cheryl admits that she had some misgivings about the neighborhood. She says, “I wasn’t sure if the residents were going to be as friendly as in some of the other neighborhoods we had lived in.” But all of her worries were put to rest once the couple began moving their things into their home. With the moving van still unloading furniture, two neighbors brought over food for their family. “That was an indication of what our time here would be like. It’s been the same ever since. Our neighbors are the nicest, friendliest people and it’s such a friendly place to live,” Cheryl says with a smile. “My company has asked if I would transfer and I said, ‘Hell no, I am never transferring!’” Pat laughs. “We like our neighbors, we like our home and we love our community.”

Secret to Success Pat and Cheryl’s free time has changed in a major way since the couple welcomed grandchildren into their lives; one in Austin and two in Baltimore. During the last few years, the couple mostly coordinates their schedules around seeing their grandkids. Although Pat likes to keep busy with his business, charity auctions and golf, he still sets aside time for a weekly date night with Cheryl. The two regularly go out to dinner and catch a movie on Friday nights. “A lot of people say, ‘You sold your company, why don’t you retire?’ I’m a workaholic. I love my company, I love my clients, I love the people I work with. Cheryl supports me 110% and I get to do what I want to do.” While at a conference last month, Pat was asked, “What is the hidden secret of your success?” Reluctant to reveal his long-time secret to success, Pat said, “It’s her,” pointing to Cheryl. “She and I have been together since 1970 so we’ve been together a lot more than we haven’t been. We’ve been blessed with great kids and grandkids. She’s been my support. We’ve been fortunate and successful, but she’s been the rock behind it all.”

Whiskey Cake kitchen & bar By Lisa Arcuri, dominion resident photography by kayla davisson You may think that Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar at The Shops at La Cantera is just another chain restaurant. You may think, “It will be easy to get in without a reservation most nights.” You may even think: “It’s probably no big deal, it can wait”. You’d be wrong on all three counts. Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar is an award winning “farm to fork, garden to glass” restaurant that serves seasonally rotating, made from scratch recipes using ingredients sourced from local farms. San Antonio vendors include: CKG Farms in Blanco, Silver Streak Farms in Palacios, and Youngblood Honey from Pearsall, CKG Farms in Blanco produces the goat cheese for their Goat cheese fondue. Manager Glenn Walls explains that sourcing local producers gives the restaurant staff the opportunity to go out and explore the farms, and see where the food is coming from. This unique approach also lends itself to a better understanding of the ingredients. For example, the abundance of rain in the area this spring has changed the complexity of the goat cheese. This investment in “American Comfort Food” is what makes Whiskey 40

Cake so special. You will find a wide variety of Whiskey Cocktails, all the classics, and an interesting assortment of elixirs, such as the “As You Wish” made from Aylesbury duck vodka, jalapeno, mango, orange, cranberry, lime and agave. Every week there is a featured cocktail. This time it was Euclid’s Watermelon Serum. Ask about it; you won’t be disappointed. The food at Whiskey Cake is amazing. As you can imagine, it’s fresh. But it’s also quirky. Take for example, the deviled eggs. These little gems are made differently all the time. This time, they were a combination of pickled spicy pepper, broccoli slaw and dried cranberries. Not a combination you would think of readily, but it definitely works. It’s a savory, spicy, sweet balance in one perfect bite! Try the fried green tomatoes. These are unique because they use a true variety of green tomatoes. Most restaurants serve an under ripe beefsteak tomato, but that’s not good enough for Whiskey Cake. The green tomato variety is naturally sweeter, and is perfectly paired with

a tangy remoulade. The eclectic menu continues with Burgers and Main Plates. Whiskey Cake grinds beef brisket to make their burgers extra special. The OMG Burger is stacked high with a big onion ring, roasted crimini mushrooms, and a whole list of goodies you’ll have to see for yourself. A very special rotisserie chicken is brined for 24 hours, then slow roasted, paired with a smoky onion mustard jus, and sautéed spinach. Another star of the menu is the Texas Striped Bass. This little beauty is served on top of an unexpected broccoli slaw with avocado green goddess dressing. The whole menu is full of surprises, “out of the box” pairings, and delicious treats. Their signature Whiskey Cake is made with a toffee torte, bourbon anglaise, spiced pecans, and whipped cream. Treat yourself to the scratch recipe dessert of the day. This time it was a summer berry lemon trifle. This house made treat is comprised of a lemon Bundt cake, Grand Marnier berries, and a whipped cream/ cream cheese concoction like no other! Even if the hour is late, if you love coffee, you must have a cup at Whiskey Cake. The Brown Coffee Co. of San Antonio is the purveyor, and they have sourced a coffee from Papua New Guinea just for us! Let your server give you the scoop on just how special it is. In addition to their locally sourced philosophy, Whiskey Cake has a strong belief in reuse, recycle and refurbish. The décor is industrial, with high ceilings of exposed pipes, light and airy with large windows, and earthy with tables and floors made from honey colored wood. Anything but sterile, the mix of comfy sofas, and chairs upholstered in colorful fabrics gives a feeling of cozy warmth. It’s a feast for the eyes with so much to see. The ceiling is covered with empty egg cartons. There are soda bottles hanging from the wall with plants growing in them. Lightbulbs for vases, recycled cardboard as coasters, the list goes on and on. Check out this fun and funky place where you are guaranteed a delicious, locally sourced, made-from-scratch, exceptional meal! Happy Hour M-F 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. ($2.00 off all draft beers and elixirs) Wednesday is Ladies Night featuring half priced wine 3:00 p.m.-Close

By Barry Mills, director of tennis and aquatics So be honest, who is wishing we had just a little of that rain (and those cooler temperatures) back again? I know I do. I’m not sure who to give credit to but my favorite phrase when describing our weather is “We have 10 months of summer and then we have July and August!” I want to introduce 2 great women who make The Dominion Country Club the place to be for all your children.

Ann Mills, Our Summer Camp Director of Mighty Muscles and Action Adventure, has been organizing and producing the best camps in San Antonio for 15 years. These camps allow for an age range of 3 ½ to 16 years. Her guarantee is to send your children home at the end of each day very tired and extremely happy. Every day is exciting and different for your kids. They love it! Ann has her masters in Speech pathology and has extensive experience in child education. She is the calmest and kindest mother of 3 and works so hard every day to keep everyone happy, busy and safe. I hope you had a chance to meet her this summer.

Cassandra Rupp is our Swim Team Director. She has been teaching and racing our Dominion Dolphins for 3 years now. She is a senior and a very accomplished swimmer at New Mexico State and has lettered each year. She has been her team captain for the last 2 years. Cassandra is another calm and dedicated lady who cares very much for the new swimmer as well as the accomplished. She will make each child feel so safe while encouraging them to get the most out of themselves every time they enter the pool.

by Kelly Thompson, Membership Director of DCC

Besides the activities your respective Membership categories offer, Clubs within the Club is a personal way for fellow Members to share interests, commonalities, and get together to have a great time! We encourage everyone to get involved as we help foster an environment where Members can design and run their own specialty Clubs, such as a Book Club, Wine Club or Travel Club. Members decide whether they want to meet on a weekly or monthly basis to discuss, sample or do something active. Supper Club – The Supper Club began in 1999 when some members decided to find another way to meet fellow Club members and increase the “family” aspect of the community. Soon they began having “theme” nights to make it even more fun. Many of the themes revolve around holidays and the seasons, but can also include music, dancing, entertainment, and a Military salute each November. The club meets every first Thursday of the month, September through May, for cocktails and fine buffet dining. The club is open to all members of The Dominion Country Club, but if non-members would like to attend an evening, that can be arranged. After a summer break, Supper Club begins again on Thursday, September 3 with “It’s 5:00 Somewhere” night - think tropical, think Jimmy Buffet, think FUN! Music, dancing, food, and friends. Women’s Forum – The Women’s Forum is a ladies social group that emphasizes friendship and fun among the lady club members. The Forum organizes many events during the season, including happy hours, holiday parties, special events with partners, a holiday 44

shopping bazaar in December, and a fabulous gala in the spring. They organize luncheons on the first Friday of each month, September through May, with interesting and fun programs, shopping, and a delicious food. The fall season starts with a luncheon featuring opera singer Angela Malek on September 4 and a Welcome Back Champagne Happy Hour with guest pianist on September 10. Join now to share in the fun! History Club – The History Club is a very popular and well attended club that meets nine times a year. It is led by Army veteran and former history teacher, Col. Dan Johnston, a Dominion resident. Dan uses Power Point presentations along with group interaction to make history come alive. Each year he focuses on a different historical time frame. They have covered the 20th Century through the Cold War; this fall they will bring world events up to current time, beginning with events in Asia that they have not already covered in the Cold War period (i.e., Gandhi and Indian independence, the influence of China, and Japan’s development since WWII). Later meetings will cover Africa, Europe, the Mideast, and the Americas. The club meets every second Thursday for an engaging lecture and discussion. The first session will begin on Thursday, September 10, at 4:30 p.m. Everyone is a part of history - join this club and keep your mind sharp and engaged! Camera Club – Jim and Robin Landers, owners of Landers Photography, and the official Country Club photographers, invite you to join this club, every second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. for

all things camera and photography! A guest speaker is typically included, refreshments are always served, and you will definitely learn new and advanced techniques for taking the best pictures possible! The cost for Camera Club is just $10 and is charged to your Member account. Ladies Bible Study - The Ladies Bible Study, also called the Hill Country Women’s Bible Study, began in 1986 and is a fellowship of women from all Christian denominations who study the Bible, discuss how to live in faith, receive spiritual support from one another, and pray. No membership is required and it is open to all women who would like to share in this fellowship. The group meets every Wednesday at noon in the Board Room, September through May. The fall season begins with a meeting on Wednesday, September 30. Men’s Bible Study – The Men’s Bible Study meets yearround every Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. for group discussion, with orange juice and coffee provided. Many of the participants have met together for over ten years, and encourage their fellow members to join them. Invite guests if you are so inclined! The men typically stay after Bible Study to continue the discussion in the Grille over breakfast! Ladies Bridge – There are several groups playing Bridge at the Club including Duplicate Bridge groups, groups directed by a professional Bridge director, both large and small groups, some open to Club members and others that are not exclusively for Club members. Bridge instructors visit to help teach beginners and advanced players alike. All provide entertainment, mental stimulation, and opportunities for friendship. Most meet on a weekly basis. Call the Club to see which group might be right for you! Dominion Animal Advocates Group (DAAG)- This is a neighborhood rescue group that assists with lost and abandoned pets, homeless roaming cats, and wildlife issues in the community. Volunteer opportunities include such things as fostering pets, transporting or photographing foster pets, helping with TNR (trap, neuter, return) of community cats, bottle feeding infant pets, fundraising, and marketing. Special events and tours provide opportunities to learn more about various animal issues and just enjoy visiting with other animal lovers. The group helps host Bark in the Park and the Howl-o-ween Pet Costume Party in The Dominion. Meetings are held the first Thursday at 11:30 am at the Dominion Country Club. Contact Louan LeDoux at (210) 854-8055, Susan Shaked at (210) 744-1200, or Lyn Hicks at (210) 219-9772 for information. His TMI soccer team placed 3rd in state this year. In addition to playing soccer, he is also on the TMI tennis and golf teams. Josh doesn’t play any club sports but has participated in many USTA tennis tournaments and USJGA golf tournaments. This year, he received the Academic All “A” honor roll, and was inducted into the National Honor Society. According to Josh, playing trombone for the TMI band was the most time consuming extracurricular activity he participated in this year. In college, he plans on studying mechanical engineering and then applying to medical school. However, as of right now, he has not decided which schools he will attend. This summer, he has gone on a few out-of-state trips and volunteered as a counselor for two weeks at a summer camp in Waring, Texas called Camp Capers. Josh has also volunteered this summer at the San Antonio Food Bank. On top of all of this, he plans on working at a local orthopedic surgeon’s office. His parents, Scott and Marlise Kercheville, have lived in The Dominion for 22 years. He has one 19-year-old sister who is currently studying business at Texas A&M University. His favorite part about living in The Dominion is the ability to be able to participate in the many events hosted by The Dominion community.

After five and a half years away, The Dominion Country Club is thrilled to welcome back Franck Mannechez as its Director of Private Events and Catering! Before Franck left the Club to work for the Mexican street food eatery, La Gloria, he had been a part of The Dominion Country Club for ten years. He worked his way up from a maître d’ in the restaurant to Operations Manager of the Club, but a large part of his history with the Club was spent working with catering and private events. “I always missed The Dominion Country Club when I left because 54

here it is like a big family,” Franck says. “I think all of the members feel the same way too; that’s why they’re happy to see me back. Ten years is a big part of someone’s life. Being from France, my real family is in France, so I don’t have anyone here with me except my wife. Everyone at The Dominion Country Club became my family. Coming back here, it’s nice to see all of their faces again.” Franck is the only one in Dominion Country Club history to sell a million dollars in events, and he hopes to exceed his record this time around.

Originally from Mexico City, new resident Patricia Alvarez officially moved to the United States with her son, Eduardo, when she was 26 years old. After living in Laredo for 17 years, she moved back to San Antonio, where she had attended college, when she was elected as a Justice to the 4th Court of Appeals. Patricia fell in love with The Dominion when she visited her brother, Roberto, who has been a resident for some time. In an effort to downsize, Patricia moved to The Dominion in 2014 for a more peaceful and private atmosphere; somewhere she could retire. She says that The Gardens at The Dominion is the perfect fit for a single grandmother of five like herself, where she can socialize with her neighbors and feel safe. This colorfully modern Mexican style home was built by Scott Felder and landscaped by Bill Schultz and Marie Hill, keeping in mind functionality and Patricia’s grandchildren.

We had one of the most successful Parent Junior Tournaments last July than we have had in several years! Thank you to everyone that came out to participate! Also, The Dominion Golf Staff would like to give a round of applause to Phoenix Guerra and Jesse Guerra on their victory with a nine hole score of 30. Not to mention this is the third year in a row they have won! Who is going to take them down next year? Phoenix is starting to get quite comfortable in the top spot! I Also want to recognize Jon Beitz and Christian Beitz for getting second place. And Sergio Ostos and Sergio Jr. Ostos captured third place. We have big plans for this month, starting with The Ladies Club Championship on September 10, followed by The Men’s Club Championship on September 18 -20. Make sure everyone signs up for these prestigious events in the Golf Shop.

SE PT EM BER 2015

Got the Yips? Usually when I see people yipping shots I tend to see the left arm stopping dead and the right hand flips at the golf ball. Does this sound familiar? The trick is to keep moving your left arm through the golf shot. I have a drill that can help. Take your normal setup: stance narrow, ball just behind center, weight favoring the front foot. Then make your regular chipping stroke, except drop your right hand off the grip just before impact. Focus on keeping your left arm swinging to the target. With your yipping hand off the club and your lead arm moving through, you physically can’t do what yippers do. The other part of yipping is the fear that you can’t control it. To combat that, don’t delay. Make two practice swings, dropping your right hand off, then get in there and make your normal stroke. Your swing thought should be: keep the left arm moving!

Eat, drink, and bowl with some style. That’s the experience Bowl and Barrel promises you’ll have if you check out their location. If you haven’t gone yet, you should really get the ball rolling. All predictable jokes aside, Bowl and Barrel provides for customers a chic modern atmosphere, fresh and mouth-watering food and drink, and multi-colored neon bowling balls; a bowler’s paradise. Founders Kyle Noonan and Josh Sepkowitz started their business in Dallas. The two were classmates at SMU together and, after brainstorming about a way to revolutionize entertainment with a creative and modern twist, Noonan and Sepkowitz came up with the unique 2-in-1 bar and bowling franchise that is Bowl and Barrel. The San Antonio location opened up just three months ago in late June, and it’s no surprise that the full-service bar, 15-lane combo is just as huge a success here as it is in Dallas. But Noonan and Sepkowitz wasted no time watching the money roll in. In late July, they opened up a restaurant right next to B&B, sans neon bowling balls and slick hardwood floors, called the General Public. Though the restaurant has a bit of a different vibe, it is still owned by the same trendy and fun-spirited men who, according to the General Public’s website, are committed to “wholesome food and warm hospitality” and “always keeping you in good spirits.” Bowl and Barrel is located just off of I-10, across the street from the Palladium. The full-service bar and boutique bowling alley accommodate both small and large parties. B&B is open from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 a.m.-2:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. They advertise themselves as family-friendly and welcome kids, but imply an environment geared toward an adult crowd after 7:00 p.m. The General Public has the same hours. Be sure to check out B&B and the General Public next time you’re at the RIM. You’ll have a ball. T h e D o m i n i o n -M a g a z i n e . c o m

ne of the newest neighborhoods in The Dominion is The Bluff, which is located near the north end of The Dominion, across from The Reserve. As the name indicates, The Bluff is a heavily wooded area running along a bluff overlooking Leon Springs and Leon Creek. This neighborhood is being built in two phases with phase 1 platted for 73 lots. Phase 2 has two distinct sections; one section for 24 garden homes, and the other section for custom estate homes. The Bluff is being developed by longtime Dominion resident and custom home builder, Roberto Kenigstein. Currently, there are three completed homes in the garden section built by Sitterle Homes, and seven estate homes under construction. Builders of the estate homes currently under construction include Image Homes, Genesis, Artus Lux, Dynamic, and Mike Hollaway. Most of these homes will be showcased in the upcoming Parade of Homes, scheduled for October 10-18.

Buildable Lots Aside from the new lots in The Bluff, it may surprise some residents to learn that there are over 300 undeveloped lots currently available scattered through The Dominion. A good number of these are in the southern end of the community in the Andalusia, Sanctuary, Renaissance, Aragon and Alturas neighborhoods. There are also many vacant lots available in just about every neighborhood in The Dominion. Available lots can accommodate just about any size or style of home one can imagine. Anyone interested in purchasing a lot should contact a realtor.

Parade of Homes The Bluff is scheduled to host the 2015 San Antonio Builders Association Parade of Homes. The event is scheduled for the second week in October. The Parade will showcase six or seven custom homes in the estates section and two Sitterle Homes in the garden homes section. The builders currently building custom estate homes include Image Homes, Genesis, Artus Lux, Dynamic, and Mike Hollaway. The Parade of Homes is held annually and The Dominion has been the site for three out of the last four years. The Parade of Homes is an excellent way to promote The Dominion as a premier community in San Antonio. There will be a special Dominion Day on Monday, October 12, 8:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. , for Dominion residents. Dominion residents will be able to buy one ticket to the event and get the second free. There will also be a special VIP event. For more information on the Parade of Homes, please visit the San Antonio Builders Association website at www.sabuilders.com.

Favorite late night options include the legendary Mynt on Collins Avenue and Mokai Lounge on 23rd and Collins which is popular with a very diverse group of nationalities including Russians, Brazilians and Argentinians. Not to be missed is the opportunity to enjoy the famous beaches of Miami, perhaps indulging in a cool, luscious Cuban Mojito or a frothy Pina Colada. Working out at Koko and looking fabulous has given my wife a big head, but I’ve remained fairly grounded. Initially, Koko appealed to me because, like a lot of people, I need to be told what to do to achieve my health and fitness goals, but I don’t like being told. I certainly don’t want to be preached to by some kid who doesn’t remember when phones and cameras were two different things. Koko fit the bill because the computer is always ready when I am; never cops an attitude; and isn’t making fun of me after I leave. (Hmm…. pretty sure about that last one.) But what started out being about the machines is now about the people––both the staff and the other club members are great and help make the experience a very positive part of my lifestyle that I wouldn’t dare miss.
