GARDEN DESIGN PORTFOLIO

Contents Introduction

This portfolio was created as part of a University project that focuses on an area of Thamesmead, a district of East London, England. The project brief was to come up with a design idea that would improve upon and attract people to the current uninspiring area. The project was split into stages of work, first we would analyse the site and it’s context. Then we would go about forming conceptual design ideas that we could then develop further through a design development stage and finally a detail stage. As the stages progressed the area of focus got smaller allowing for a more intricate level of detail to be displayed.

Site Location

Thamesmead Project:

Thamesmead, London Meso

Macro

Location: Thamesmead, Bexley, London Project: University of Greenwich, BA Garden Design, Masterplanning, Development and Detail 2014-2015.

Executive Summary The area is made up of a vast housing estate with some peripheral industry, located in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley on former marshland between Woolwich and Erith. Consisting of mainly social housing, built from the mid-1960s onwards, originally planned to have 60,000-100,000 residents, it is now estimated to be on target for a final population of around 50,000. The structure and texture that the buildings create are harsh on the eyes, producing a monochromatic middle ground. The sense of community has been lost through the rush of everyday life with a lack of appreciable and enjoyable space.

Micro

My response to this was to create a park that acts as an element of connection, through a number of connective features. This connection will aim to link residential areas together to a central point of interest, offering a destination for social, recreational and pleasurable experiences. The park will focus on incorporating functional, interactive and relaxing areas which will aim to enhance community cohesion and provide an identity to the area. The park will look at the interesting relationship between formality and informality. The formal will be reflected by the use of geometric structure found in the surrounding buildings and hard surfaces. The Informal will be portrayed by imitating the irregularity of nature, through the use of water, landforms trees and plants. An increase in biodiversity will be created with the introduction of small marshes, lake’s, wildflower meadows, mixed grasslands as well as varied evergreen and deciduous tree planting. The importance of a promenade space around Southmere lake will be highlighted by a memorable and attractive space that maintains key views out over the lake.

Thamesmead Project

BEN SKELLEY, DWG No: 013 Open area to be turned into a small lake that will serve as an attenuation pond slowly dispersing water back into the ground.

Undulating topography to be retained and enhanced by creating dramatic landformations

The landscape topography is what seperates the two housing estates and provides a visual buffer. The topography will be adapted and raised in places to a height of 5.00m above sea level. Hedge provides little benefit and only acts as a boundary marker. The boundaries of the park are to be planted to the edges, a large swathe of bamboo will provide a buffer to the road.

Deciduous trees open up views through their crowns in colder months and expose the landscape beyond. Some trees to be uplifted and moved to make room for landforms and a grid of Betulus utilis var. jacquemontii

Housing estates to the East of the site steal the background views providing unpleasant scenery. A matrix of Carpinus betulus will be used as a buffer to the road and houses blocking out some of the sights of the houses.

Tower blocks symbolize the Thamesmead area but dominate the skyline. The integrity of these is to be reflected in the geometry, a formal and bold appearance is to be carried across through the hard materials.

Key views out towards the lake provide relief from the urban surroundings. These views are to be maintained and emphasised with the use of a boardwalk and floating stage.

Vantage point offers good views of the surrounding area but is exposed and overlooked from both sides. The design looks to make use of this as the highest point in the park. This is where the grand steps and cascade will start from giving views over the promenade and beyond.

Some of the undulating topography is to be flattened along the promenade area. In order to create a balance between the informality of the landforms and the formality created by the geometry on the promenade.

Gradual ramp follows the desire lines. This is to be adapted using precast concrete panels as the paving surface. The ramp is to be at a lesser gradient to make a smoother transition for disabled users and provide an alternative route to the Grand steps.

Flooding of paths shows lack of drainage at specific points. Slot drainage is to be employed around all the hard surfaces and the edges of the park which will then filter back into a main tank and be reused in the water features,

Entrance is lacklustre offering no enticement. A grid of Carpinus betulus is to front the entrance and mark it out as a bold statement and signifity the arrival into the park.

Open areas are heavily overlooked by housing, there is nothing that defines the space between the houses and the site. Native woodland trees to be screened around the houses to create an interesting backdrop.

Road adjacent to site creates noise and is visible from inside the site because of the low hedge height. This is to be buffered with clump forming bamboo planting and mixed ornamental grass and perennial swathes. This will help to enliven the edges whilst also creating intrigue and obsucring views in and out.

An old cannon signifies a possible historical link but seems out of context with the rest of the site. This area is to be transformed into a flat grand lawn space with staggered planting beds offering a much more functional area for lounging and recreation.

A large exposed view of the houses is unattractive with nothing to obscure or enhance the space. This is to be screened with mixed, native deciduous trees in a semi mature size to give instant impact.

Steep gradient caused by the topography acts as a land buffer. The topography will be adapated to have a more gentle gradient

Masterplanning Development

Celebratory Fun

The Masterplan development began with sketching out conceptual ideas and plans by using the 3 words: Celebratory, Connectivity and Reactionary to influence design intention. A mood board reflecting the various design inspirations and influences conveys the initial thinking and intended application.

This stage of the process involved creating a Masterplan concept design at a scale of 1:500 along with supportive sketches.

Initial Concept Plans

The Idea behind the celebratory concept was something akin to the paintings produced by Roberto Burle Marx in appearance. A organic river of form and movement.

Connectivity

Connectivity

Connectivity became the chosen theme for the concept and the design was further developed into a fully rendered 1:500 and 1:2000 masterplan with supporting sections and sketches. The Connectivity design idea was based on a series of elements that were both formal and informal, natural and inorganic that would attempt to link both the areas of manmade and natural context using these elements.

Contrasting Linked Formal Shared

Wild Gateway

Playful

Key Features: • Landforms - used to create a connection of informality and provide a buffer and activity space whilst providing an interesting change in heights. • Tree Grids - a formal connective element used to highlight entrance/exit points and provide a unity within the park. • Grand Steps - create an iconic walk down to the promenade and produce a connection between the highest point of the park and the lowest along with sharing a parallel connection with the boardwalk. • Boardwalk and Pier/Stage- joining onto Southmere lake and offering extended views of the surrounding landscape this would provide a point of interest for visitors. There is also a stage area at the end with seating, providing a place to host events. • Promenade - acts as a gathering point with finely cut lawns for relaxation and activity, while a central rill runs through the centre linking the grand steps with the boardwalk and Southmere lake. The area is flanked by grids of trees which define the location. • Small Lakes/Marshes - would be planted with reeds, grasses and bamboos and tie in with the context of Erith Marshes whilst providing a habitat for certain species.

1:500 Masterplan Seating Area with wooden rectangular benches fixed to a stone paving surface. Surrounded by a grid of trees to block out views of the houses and create a quiet space to reflect. Finely cut lawn on two sides opens up usage for relaxation and recreation.

Tree Grids are one of the defining connectional features within the park, linking the different entrance and exit points and tying the informal with the formal. These aid in replicating the geometry created by the surrounding resedential buildings. (See Key).

Raised Planting Beds are filled with colourful herbaceous perennials, connecting the resedential housing together through a shared theme. (See key)

Play and recreation area has a finely cut sward and is large, flat and clear enough for play and enjoyment.

Pier and Boardwalk act as a connection of water to the land, a roof top stage overlooks the South Mere lake offering extensive views across the lake and surrounding areas. This would be used for events and as a social meeting place with an open stage area with seating. The structure would be constructed of oak to cohere with the boardwalk. The boardwalk would feature wooden seating areas so that visitors can absorb the views.

Taxus Cubes reflect a connection with the formality of the surrounding buildings through geometry. They act as a dramatic visual buffer to the road and houses whilst adding height to the centre of the site. Designed to be a recognised statement feature.

Grass Squares follow the geometric theme and are kept finely cut and used by people as a soft surface to sit on and enjoy the views looking North towards the lake and South at the blocks of trees.

Grand Steps and Rill create a line of connection with the water. A large statement feature the steps are made from concrete and have shallow walls either side following the route of the steps down to the promenade. The rill in the centre gently drops with the steps allowing the water to flow to the bottom where it is then recirculated back to the Promenade with grids of trees define a it as connectional space whilst finely cut lawns offer a soft surface to sit in on and play. In the centre is a refreshing, raised water Rill that follows the lines of the Grand steps through to the Pier and Boardwalk. Fixed, rectangular stone seating is situated around the edges of the rectangular lawns. The paving surface is a white/grey stone that is level with the rest of the promenade.

Concrete Bridge entrance follows on from the green walk chain and enters the site via two seperate bridges, creating a choice for the visitor. The entrance is dominated by a grid of trees on three sides. These signifiy the start of the connection between, formal and informal, as well as connecting the surrounding resedential areas with the park and nature.

Perennial and Wildlfower beds juxtaposed to produce a ea of hot and cold colours leading down to the promenade. It highlights and defines the grand steps when looking back towards the park from the boardwalk. A great attraction for pollinators.

Woodland Walk flows into a mixed Deciduous and Evergreen swathe of trees. A seperate band of specific Autumnal interest is created by Acer’s, Gingko’s and Robinia’s that highlight the landscape with fiery reds and yellows. Along the pathway up to the Cafe are ornamental grasses that produce an interesting dynamic.

Landforms act as another defining connective feature. Seeking to replicate the natural undulations created by surrounding hills and valleys and to bring nature back into Thamesmead. They are covered in a amenity grass surface and the sward is left long as to encourage more wildlife and wildflowers, but also keep maintenance costs lower. Their heights vary upon the size of the landform and are based on a 1:3 - 1:5 gradient.

Cafe and Floating Deck provide an idyllic rest stop and social hub. Placed intentionally at the highest point in the park with views looking straight towards the lake. The floating deck offers an outdoor seating space with two levels. Raised Planting Bed lead up to the main park, filled with herbaceous perennials creating various scents as you walk past. Square topiary hedges segregate different sections of the bed. (See Key).

Concrete Steps lead up to the main park, providing a key connection point with the resedential areas signified by the grid of trees. Either side of the steps is a row of pleached Fagus which create a grander entrance approach obscuring the views into the park until the user is a the top of the steps.

Pier Boardwalk made from oak boards connecting the water with the land. A gap in the centre reflects the water rill leading from the grand steps.

Raised Planting Beds with mixed Herbaceous Perennials, a cool colour pallete enhances the resedential spaces drawing people into the main park.

Amenity Grass

Mixed trees of Deciduous and Evergreen species define, screen and connect areas within the park.

Ornamental Grass bands create a smooth flow of movement and reflect the colours of the sunlight at dusk and dawn.

Autumn Interest Trees consisting of various Acer, Ginkgo and Robinia. Add a dramatic effect to the landscape and a statement feature with fiery foliage.

Tree Grids using clipped Fagus or Magnolia, 3-4m high shaped cylindrically.

Marginal Planting consisting of mixed grasses, ferns, reeds and bamboos. Providing a soft edge to the lake, whilst creating a habitat for wildlife to thrive.

Playground made using plastic and wooden materials, situated within a resedential space that leads up towards the main park.

Small informal lake flanked by landforms. The margins are planted with water tolerant reeds, grasses, ferns and bamboos to add interest and soften the edges. An enticing and serene location for wildlife to inhabit. It creates a connection with the Erith Marsh land in the distance. The land around the lake is undulating creating a playful and interesting contrast to the level promenade.

1:200 Design Development Following on from the connectivity related concept design at 1:500 scale, the design development stage focuses on a selected area of the masterplan and refines it at the 1:200 scale. I started working out changes and improvements to the selected area by sketching out my ideas on plans and through sketches and perspective drawings. At this point I wanted the planting to take on a informal role but for there to be formal elements (e.g lines of grasses). The hard surfaces would be developed to create a structured and formal presence through strong, repetitive lines and grids.

A selected 1:200 development area was chosen from the 1:500 masterplan from which to further develop.

Bamboo groves provide a backdrop to the planting as well as a buffer to the road, the rustle from the bamboos in the wind coincides with the movement created from the grasses.

Sporadically placed Malus, Prunus and Amelanchier reinforce an organic and informal appearance that links with the rest of the planting and contrasts with the formal geometry found in the other parts of the park.

Open-sided pavilion offers a place to sit and take in views looking down to the promenade and across Southmere lake. Directly in front is a shallow pool, with water jets creating a dynamic link to the promenade providing a playful atmosphere.

Perennials and Shrub planting give a colourful, rich and diverse display through the year peaking in the summer and autumn.

Widlflower meadows create a biodiverse and attractive landscape with a vivid array of colour and texture.

A contrast of ornamental grasses flank the path up from the road and draw the flow of movement into the park as they sway gently in the wind.

Raised Planter holds a grid of Carpinus betulus acting as a dominant buffer, hiding views of the houses and road. The east side of the raised planter wall provides seating bay cut outs.

Lighting Strategy Plan B

These plans were created to define how the area would behave and what materials and functions it would be using. The hardworks covers all the hard surfaces such as paved surfaces, walls and structures. The lighting pinpoints the location of desired lighting scheme with a choice of bollard, recessed wall and pole-top luminaires.

Strategy: The Primary paths will be lit with Bollard luminaries, which will be staggered in places. Along The Promenades Primary routes a mix of Pole luminaries and Bollard luminaries in close proximity will provide the mainstay of the lighting. Recessed wall luminaries will be used in the raised planter/retaining wall creating light for the seating bays that projects along the paved walkway. Water tight uplighters will be placed in the shallow pool areas to illuminate the jets of water. Recessed wall luminaries will also be used in the walls following the Grand steps and Cascade, highlighting the steps for safe access and showcasing the movement of water. Along the Secondary pathways Pole luminaries provide light to highlight the pathway at 10m intervals, they are intended to be less intrusive to respect the privacy of the residents nearby.

The Drainage follows the contours of the land and will filter into the filtration lake along with various drains that would aim to capture the water and store some of it for reuse.

Bollard luminaries are placed along the Tertiary routes at 6-7m intervals as a subtle lighting approach that allows for night time walks through the dense planting but does not overpower the scenery.

The structural planting plan defines the trees and hedges, both existing and proposed. A decision was made to keep some of the native existing trees as they helped with screening the surrounding buildings. Softworks lays out areas of planting, defining what the area will contain. The use of meadows promote a naturalistic scheme along with mixed perennial beds and swathes of grasses.

1:50 Detail Development This final stage of development focuses on a smaller area of the 1:200 plan developing all aspects of the design, including all the hardworks, softworks, technical details, supporting plans and sketches. For this part of the process I refined my connective elements further, thinking about the function and aesthetics they would create. The emphasis was on creating something playful, organic and inorganic. With playfulness being expressed through the use of coloured perspex canopies, planting choices as well as the cascade and fountains.

Draft Base Plan

Trees Amelanchier canadensis and Prunus Serrula with lush summer foliage have strong autumn and spring displays. Vibrant autumn shows of reds, oranges and yellow compliment the rusty brown perennials and grasses as they die back for the winter. Resin Bound Paving A permeable surface providing sustainable drainage with colourful golden brown and grey aggregate. The path winds through the planting in a serpentine fashion, with perennials and grasses spilling over the edges.

C

Topiary Ilex Crenata ‘Dark Green’ forms the focal structure in the area, clipped into columns they enhance the gemoetry and help to link the formal with the informal. Emerging from the planting like a tower block from the surrounding landscape. Grasses Swathes of Deschampsia, Molinia, Miscanthus, Sporobolus and Stipa intermingle with one another and into the path of perennials. Their light movement in the wind gives the sensation of a sea rolling down the sloped banks. Maintaining their seed heads through winter, providing texture and earthy tones as the mists and frost shroud them

Raised Planter and Seating Made from precast concrete, a 800mm high wall holds a matrix of clipped Carpinus betulus, densely under planted with Blechnum, Hakonechloa, Geranium and Tellima. Integral seating bays cut into the retaining wall provide views across the grand lawn.

KEY: Hard Landscaping:

Canopy Made with stainless steel framework and multi colour perspex roof panels. 3.0m high and fixed to raised planter, providing shade and shelter over half of the path. Whilst different hues from the roof cast playful shadows below.

Precast Concrete Steps, panels with exposed grey granite aggregate and off-white matrix, gritblasted finish offers surface traction and texture. 160mm risers and 1250mm goings and 6m landings.

D

Precast Concrete Paving, panels use exposed grey granite aggregate with off-white matrix and gritblasted finish. 3m dark grey expansion joints help to bring out the linear pattern produced by the panels. The choice of concrete corresponds with the materials used in the surrounding context.

Benches, a stainless steel frame with 3 bays of Iroko hardwood seating. Situated within the planting as to enhance interaction and offer private views through the planting. +4.00m

Edging and Drainage, precast concrete edging with slot drainage channels inbetween the panels and edging help to reduce water build up and provide a subtle system to alleviate surface run off. Exposed light grey granite aggregate and dark grey matrix provide a contrast to the white paving panels. +1.50m

Raised Planter Wall and Precast Concrete Panels, offer a polished finish, using exposed light grey granite aggregate and dark grey matrix. The wall sections are 500-650mm thick and the paving panels are 500mm wide. Providing a smooth finish that alleviates the rough gritblasted finish of other surrounding materials.

Thamesmead Project Grand Steps perform as a primary route through the central axis of the park, 3.0m wide either side allowing for easy movement and conversation. The strong geometry along with the clean cut, appearance and neutral colour, contrast with the flanking plants.

Flank Walls Precast concrete 1.1m high walls on both the planting and cascade side provide a break between the different spaces but still allow enticing views of the surrounds. They also serve as a hand rail when walking down the steps

Cascade Creates white noise setting an atmosphere for the park whilst aiding in blocking out surrounding road noise. A shallow stream of water breaks over subtle weirs, the ending comes to a gentle trickle of water, somewhere for people to dip their feet into. A reflective gold lining adds to its grandeur, as the water shimmers with a rich background glow.

1:50 Rendered Plan

Primary Paths Linking to the main road and surrounding context. 3-4m wide, enough for 3 people to move through and converse. Precast concrete with exposed grey granite and white matrix provide a clean cut, formal appreance juxtaposed to the informal planting.

Shallow Pool providing a safe and playful area for people to interact with water, 3 Jets project water to human height creating an appealing display and cooling for those within close proximity.

Planting Beds Staggered beds with one containing perennials and grass and the other bed, Ilex crenata ‘Dark Green’ clipped into square topiary forms. Plants 600mm high allows viewing over the top from all sides. Ilex topiary gives evergreen structure and seperates the softer forms of herbaceous planting.

A multi stem Prunus Serriula dominates the view with its reflective red bark and potent white blossom. Anemone, Salvia and Pennisetum help to highlight its position within the landscape, while Deschampsia and Miscanthus grasses rustle in the wind around it, brushing up against its bark.

Raised planter made from polished, precast concrete with cut outs for seating creating a place to take refuge and look over the herbaceous beds onto the grand lawn. Recessed lighting below the seating gives a pleasant and ambient atmosphere at dusk.

Resin bound, permeable, pathway creates a suitably, drained surface. The path meanders through perennials, grasses, shrubs and tree planting with benches carefully positioned for a multitude of views.

Ilex crenata ‘Dark Green’ clipped into columnar forms reflect the context of tower blocks dominating the skyline rising up out of the ground.

Stainless Steel Canopy covering 1.5m of the path provides shelter and shade to walk and sit under. A multi-coloured perspex roof provides a playful hue of shadows.

Staggered beds, one side has rich and colourful mix of perennials, Astilbe ‘Fanal’ provides a vibrant flush of red that sets off the white produced from the Actaea racemosa. The adjacent side has evergreen all year interest in the form of Ilex crenata ‘Dark Green’ clipped into undulating square forms. Under planting with Tellima grandiflora, Blechnum spicant, Hakonechloa macra and Geranium nodosum for added seasonal interest and textural composition.

The grand steps with water cascade provides the central axis to the park and a key focal point. Flank walls seperate the water and planting from the steps, while a reflective gold lining on the cascade creates a bold aura as the water glistens over it. Weirs aligned with the steps provide a subtle break of white noise as the water tumbles

Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla ‘Thundercloud’ emerges adjacent to the step, its dark purple, red foliage is juxtaposed to the lush and earthy tones

Cortaderia selloana spills over the grand steps with its frothy white seed heads, its foliage helps soften the dark hue of the Sambucus next to it.

Shallow pool of water provides an interactive area where people can frolic around jumping in and out of the jets of water. Sloped sides grant easy access and the surface is finished with a anti slip finish. 3 jets of water produce drama and acoustic atmosphere, livening up the drab surroundings of Thamesmead.

The end point of the cascade and shallow pool allow people to dip their hands and feet into the water, cooling off on a hot summers day. The sound of moving water creates a relaxed ambiance for those in close proximity.

Blocks of clipped Ilex crenata ‘Dark Green’ create an evergreen, formal presence within the planting. Softened with swathes of Deschampsia, Molinia and Sporobolus.

Fargesia murielae clumps hide the nearby road and create dense foliage that compliments the nearby Sporobolus heterolepis and spikes of white flower from Sanguisorba tenuifolia.

Undulating swathes Miscanthus sinensis ‘Kliene Silberspinne’ and Molinia caerulea ‘Moorhexe’ create a diverse channel of texture through the center of a mixture of perennials.

A burst of red and white in summer come from the Hemerocalis ‘Pardon Me’, Actaea racemosa and Filipendula rubra ‘Venusta’ highlighting the foreground.

Informal planting contrasts against the formal clipped Ilex crenata ‘Dark Green’ columns that tower above defining the planting spaces and providing structure to the visual plane.

A bench situated within the planting offers some privacy and sowewhere to contemplate silently. Whilst overlooking the potent white bloom of Cistus x obtusifolius ‘Thrive’ in Spring.

Water cascade and Grand steps provide a focal point within the park, flank walls act as a hand rail and divide the two sides from planting and water. The white precast concrete panels and walls help to frame the planting and set off the water cascades gold reflective lining.

Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla ‘Thundercloud’ creates a point of interest when walking down the steps. Its purple and red display of foliage drape over some of the flank wall and increase vibrancy in the area.
