Office of Sustainability Student Leadership Program

Student leadership is essential to making Bentley a more sustainable university. As such, the Office of Sustainability has a robust Student Sustainability Leadership Program to cultivate professional skills and provide students with hands-on learning opportunities.

The Office of Sustainability (OOS) is recruiting six paid student interns for its 2023/2024 academic year program.

• Assistant Project Manager

• Social Justice Coordinator

• PR and Outreach Specialist

• PR Content Creator

• Campus Engagement Coordinators (2)

Full job descriptions and application instructions can be found on the following pages. These positions run for the full academic year. If you are planning to study abroad during Fall 2023 or Spring 2024 you are unfortunately not eligible for these positions.

In addition to each position’s responsibilities, all interns are required to:

• Attend weekly team meetings: Wednesdays from 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm

• Attend fall OOS Student Leader Orientation: Saturday, 9/30 from 9:00am-5:00pm

• Attend (2) DEI trainings hosted by the OOS: Friday, 10/20 from 2:00pm-4:00pm (fall training, spring training TBD)

• Work at least 2 tabling events per semester: ex. Fair Trade Fair, Open House, Falcon Weekend, Friendsgiving Famers Market, Earthfest

• Collaborate with other OOS Student Leaders

We would prefer for you to apply for the position that you feel you are most qualified for. However, you may apply for up to two of the positions. Assistant Project Manager

The Office of Sustainability (OOS) staff relies on the Assistant Project Manager to help complete projects that are essential for the operations of the office. This student is responsible for assisting OOS staff with day-to-day tasks including: project management, conducting research, drafting reports, data analysis, and meeting support.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Support the Waste Minimization Task Force chair and Green Revolving Fund Committee chair in planning meetings, taking meeting notes and creating follow up documents for meetings

• Co-manage the Waste Student Educators Program with the Director of Sustainability through planning in-person training and managing students who complete the program

• Support the Director of Sustainability in creating a baseline assessment for the Waste Minimization Task Force

• Track key sustainability data

Essential skills include; advanced knowledge of sustainability and Bentley’s sustainability initiatives, excellent writing skills, and advanced skills in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel. This person must be extremely organized, a creative thinker, and someone who can work independently and take initiative on projects.

This position is approved for up to 15 hours a week and reports to the Director of Sustainability and Senior Manager of Sustainability.

Social Justice Coordinator

The Social Justice Coordinator is responsible for assisting OOS staff in evaluating the office’s practices, programs, and campus sustainability policies to identify actions needed to make Bentley’s sustainability programs actively anti-racist. The Social Justice Coordinator will be asked to think strategically about the incorporation of anti-racism and social justice into all OOS programs and social media. Prior knowledge of environmental racism and justice a plus.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Support the Indigenous Education Committee co-chairs in planning meetings, taking meeting notes and creating follow up documents for meetings

• Committee member for the MLK planning committee

• Support Office of Sustainability food insecurity work, including but not limited to:

o Create and run a tabling event highlighting the university’s partnership with Food for Free

o Support the Swipe Out Hunger Committee by co-managing swipe drives

• Collaborate with the Bentley Service Learning and Civic Engagement Center to host a table at the Friendsgiving Farmers Market (Thursday, November 16)

Essential skills include: Excellent writing and communication skills, ability to manage a variety of tasks at the same time, and knowledge of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion topics. This person must be organized and have the ability to work independently and take initiative on projects

This position is approved for up to 10 hours a week and reports to the Director of Sustainability and Senior Manager of Sustainability.

PR and Outreach Specialist

The PR and Outreach Specialist is responsible for maintaining a favorable public image for the Office of Sustainability (OOS) and its activities on and off campus. The specialist will focus on communicating Bentley’s sustainability progress and programs through management of the OOS social media channels. This student is responsible for implementing marketing strategy through planning of the OOS content calendar, promoting campus events in real time on social media, and managing other forms of office communications across campus.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Manage OOS social media channels (mainly Instagram and TikTok) which includes but is not limited to:

o Overseeing content calendar

o Oversee strategy for increasing engagement

o Maintaining relationships across campus through account interactions

o Respond to all messages and DMs

o Live post events attended

• Work with PR Content Creator to brainstorm concepts for content development

• Create monthly social media analytics reports

• Draft all content captions

• Have a strong partnership with the PR Content Creator to ensure a cohesive online presence for the Office of Sustainability

Essential skills include: a strong background in marketing, branding, project/campaign management, and strategy. Candidates should have an extensive understanding of social media strategies, organizational skills, and strong copywriting skills. Understanding of social media analytics is a plus. The PR and Outreach Specialist will work closely with the Campus Engagement Coordinators team to ensure that all OOS events are properly promoted.

PR Content Creator

The primary role of the PR Content Creator is to work with the PR and Outreach Specialist to create unique content for the Office of Sustainability with the goal to promote, communicate and engage the campus community, alumni and prospective students and parents in Bentley’s sustainability efforts.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Create Bentley branded social media graphics

• Create Instagram Reels and TikTok videos

• Create posters, fliers and other promotional materials for events

• Support Office of Sustainability website management through creating updated wireframes for website pages

• Work with Student Leader team to brainstorm content

• Have a strong partnership with the PR and Outreach Specialist to ensure a cohesive online presence for the Office of Sustainability

The skills necessary for this internship include: graphic design experience with either Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or other graphic design software. Experience in video content creation is a plus. The student should have the ability to create Bentley branded, engaging and professional content.

This position is approved for up to 15 hours a week and reports to the Senior Manager of Sustainability.

Campus Engagement Coordinator (x2)

Students on this team will support the Office of Sustainability in planning education and awareness events on campus. This includes: researching topics and tools for engagement and planning and executing educational events. The Campus Engagement Coordinators work with the PR and Outreach Specialist and PR Content Creator to ensure that events are properly promoted and successfully engage the campus community.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Co-lead the Sustainability Student Leader Symposium planning committee to successfully host and run the conference on Sunday, October 29 which is being hosted at Bentley University this year

• Manage all tabling events for the Office of Sustainability including preparing talking points, tabling materials and coordinating table coverage between themselves and other student leaders. Fall events include:

o Open House: Sunday, October 1 from 11am-3pm

o Fair Trade Fair: Wednesday, October 4 (time TBD)

o Friendsgiving Farmers Market: Thursday, November 16 (time TBD)

o Admitted Students Day: Spring, time/date TBD

o Earthfest: Spring, time/date TBD

• Creative license to plan 1-2 events during the Spring semester

• Have a strong partnership with each other and the PR and Outreach Specialist and PR Content Creator

The skills necessary for this position include: strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills, budgeting knowledge, ability to manage a variety of tasks, research skills, ability to work independently and in teams, ability to learn something new and teach others, and the capacity to motivate and lead others. Project and team management skills are a plus!

Each Campus Engagement Coordinator position is approved for up to 10 hours a week and reports to the Senior Manager of Sustainability.
