or people who love plants, the ‘cottage garden look’ will always be in vogue, whatever the age or style of the property you live in. This perennially popular planting style is the perfect choice for character homes and rural gardens. It can also be an attractive way to soften the appearance of an urban home. And if you dream of living in the country, but currently work in town, a cottage garden combines the best of both worlds. HOW TO GET THE LOOK
Traditionally, cottage gardens were practical and ornamental at the same time, mixing edible fruit and veg with fragrant shrubs, climbers and perennials, in a tumble of seasonal colour. Summer-flowering lavender, iris, dianthus, delphinium and lupins would jostle for space alongside seasonal veg and fruit trees – crab apple and medlar were popular for jellies and jams. Pretty annuals, such as cornflowers, marigolds and sweet peas, would be sown in gaps around the edges, producing seasonal flowers for picking and sharing.
GIVE IT A MODERN TWIST
Today’s cottage garden follows exactly the same principles, with colourful salad veg replacing traditional cauliflowers and cabbages, and the addition of soft grasses for a more contemporary version. The effect can be created within a single border, a group of patio pots, or even on a balcony, because the best thing about cottage garden style is that there are no rules. hade-loving shrubs and perennials can be used to add colour and interest to your garden for long periods of the year. Many shade-tolerant plants have beautiful leaves in interesting shapes, as well as eyecatching flowers. Spring-flowering plants such as hellebores appear just as winter begins to ease, and the large and flamboyant blooms of hydrangeas come into their own in September, after many other summer flowers have faded. Add a beautiful white-stemmed birch tree for a ghostly winter shimmer, and you’ll have something to admire all year round. To get started, make your border as wide as you can – ours is roughly 1.2m from front to back – so that you can plant in ‘layers’ or bold ‘blocks’. Position contrasting leaf shapes and colours next to each other for added impact, and customise the effect by swapping plants from our suggested border plan with those of a similar shape and height. 12/BEAUTIFUL GARDENS

How to IMPROVE A SHADY BORDER Mulch over the soil surface, with farmyard manure or landscape bark, to help conserve moisture and reduce weeds. here’s no need to wait for summer bedding plants to start planting up your seasonal containers. One way to get maximum interest from a container, from early spring right through to early autumn, is by combining plants with interesting foliage. Then as the weather warms up, and new plants become available, you can either add extra plants to your container, or swap in fresh alternatives. hat began life as a small rose growing operation has evolved into a 3.5 acre nursery located just next door to the Centre, where our experts grow, nurture and care for over 60% our plants. Why is this important? Because not only does it ensure our plants are the freshest and highest quality prior to sale, it also eliminates travel miles as they are wheeled over to our Open Skies Glass House using our trolleys. And green waste? It’s not waste to us. We recycle and compost all of our green waste for use on the beds around

I
t was in 1937 when Alfred and Margaret Bent planted the roots for what would become the business we know today, and what started as a hobby - growing and cultivating roses in the front garden of their terraced house located just yards away from our current location - soon became a growing enterprise. It was sons Ron and John, along with Ron’s wife Wendy, who expanded the business even further and, whilst John retired in the early eighties to focus on his Weeping Ash Garden, Ron’s passion and entrepreneurial spirit guided the business through the nineties and into the naughties. Now in its third generation, Bents is still passionate about the philosophies established in those early days: growing our own; seeking out inspirational products; aiming for outstanding customer service and, most importantly providing a warm, family friendly atmosphere. And over the past 85 years we have welcomed a large and loyal customer base. So to all those customers, old and new… we’ve grown together so let’s make 2022 a year we celebrate together. Barbecue flare-ups happen when fat and meat juices drop onto the gas or charcoal and ignite. It can cause unevenly cooked food, while the smoke can also taint the flavours. The Grillstream system prevents flare-ups by ‘capturing’ the fat released as your food cooks, and channelling it into a handy ‘fat cup’ – all ready to be disposed of later. The result is less fat, no sudden flare-ups and lots more flavour. GROW A PLANT SANCTUARY 4. Grow tasty edibles Salad veg, soft fruit, cooking herbs and edible flowers are all easy to grow, even in a small space. Colourful edibles like sweet peppers, tomatoes and strawberries are rich in potassium and vitamin C, and are especially nutritious when eaten freshly picked. 5. More specialised tools will definitely save you time and effort. A perennial spade, for example, is carefully shaped to lift and divide plants from a well-stocked border, without disturbing other plants, while the robust design of the ‘Capability’ trowel lets you weed, plant bulbs, and lift crops with ease. A long-handled Dutch hoe, with its fine, sharp edge, is also useful for precise weeding where there’s little space in between plants.
If you’re growing veggies this year, we recommend a soil rake to prepare the soil and a Handy Seeder for quick and easy seedsowing. Add a good quality digging fork, for lifting wellrooted crops like potatoes, and a pair of pruning snips (below) for harvesting leafy greens when you need them, and you’re all ready for a bumper crop.
You can grow lots of plants in a small patio border, or even on a sunny balcony – from hanging baskets to compact shrubs in pots. A sturdy trowel and hand fork will take care of digging and planting, while a pair of bypass secateurs is ideal for pruning and deadheading. A daisy grubber is another useful tool for digging out small weeds and loosening the soil before planting, and all four tools take up very little storage space. Hand fork
