Taste of the tropics

These gorgeous plants will allow you to travel the world without ever leaving your garden

Lantana ‘Cherry’

Lantana ‘Hot Blooded Red’

We have such a versatile climate in the UK that plants that are historically native to more exotic climates will grow and thrive here at home. Lantana, for example, originally came from tropical America and Africa, and you’ll often see it in holiday destinations like Malta and Tenerife. And although dahlias were first discovered in South America, they are now successfully propagated by British plant growers, and will flower until the first frosts. So why not bring an international flavour to your pots and borders with these beauties?

Toptips

FOR PLANTS FROM WARM CLIMATES

Provide shelter over winter – pop into a greenhouse or mulch the roots well. Make sure the soil or compost is free-draining – add grit or gravel if you have heavy soil. Choose a sunny spot unless the plant label tells you otherwise.
