English English roses ses are e the the most most romantic mantic of of garden flowers, bringing flair and fragrance to your summer beds and borders

Roses are regularly voted the nation’s favourite flower, not least because they’re so versatile. Shrub roses can look stylishly chic or reassuringly traditional depending on how they’re used, and modern English roses bred by British rose experts David Austin are particularly appealing.

English roses are recognisable by their layered blooms and ruffled appearance. They also offer gardeners bigger flowers, stronger scents and an even more reliable performance. The repeatflowering roses we’ve chosen here, for example, will flower in flushes from June, right through to autumn – much longer than traditional roses.

So, if you’re looking for a rose to plant near your front door, in the middle of a border, or to scramble over an arch, choose one of these top performers.

Mulch in winter A thick mulch of compost around the base of each rose plant will suppress weeds and help keep your roses healthy. Prune in spring Pruning with clean, sharp secateurs in early spring will keep your roses in good shape – trim back to new outward-facing buds.

CHOOSING A CLIMBING ROSE

Climbing roses can be grown up a variety of structures, as long as they have appropriate support – that could be an obelisk, an arch or arbour, trellis fencing or against a house wall. By tying them into the support as they grow, you can encourage more flowers to appear, creating an abundance of colour and a cloud of heavenly scent. 10.
