English roses are the most romantic of garden flowers, bringing flair and fragrance to your summer beds and borders 7

oses are regularly voted the nation’s favourite flower, not least because they’re so versatile. Shrub roses can look stylishly chic or reassuringly traditional depending on how they’re used, and modern English roses bred by British rose experts David Austin are particularly appealing. English roses are recognisable by their layered blooms and ruffled appearance. They also offer gardeners bigger flowers, stronger scents and an even more reliable performance. The repeatflowering roses we’ve chosen here, for example, will flower in flushes from June, right through to autumn – much longer than traditional roses. So, if you’re looking for a rose to plant near your front door, in the middle of a border, or to scramble over an arch, choose one of these top performers. 18/BEAUTIFUL GARDENS

ROSE CARE MADE SIMPLE Feed in summer Applied in early summer and again in spring, Westland High Performance Plant Food for Roses will boost flowering. Mulch in winter A thick mulch of compost around the base of each rose plant will suppress weeds and help keep your roses healthy. Prune in spring Pruning with clean, sharp secateurs in early spring will keep your roses in good shape – trim back to new outward-facing buds.
