NED KELLY LOOKOUT
The journey continues along this strip through to a lookout point taking you between abandoned modern buildings and into the Prison. Users see this lookout but have to work out and explore the existing buildings in order to gain access to a lookout point which projects over the site where Ned Kelly’s body was discovered and exhumed.

So what is the most common situation where people naturally gravitate towards each other? This investigation led to the idea of a long plan which became more and more private as you move away from the kitchen, typically the most social part of a home.
A shared outdoor eating area forms the core of the building. Connected via the kitchens each appartment radiates away from the centre moving progressively towards the more private parts of the house.
Appartment types are stacked together in order to group similar demographics to strengthen use of the shared space.

The U buildings are a combination of townhouses and flats. Townhouses are situated at the base of the buildings. This is to provide the option in Coburg for a family house that is part of a greater community. The ground floor contains the entrances and master bedrooms as well as sheltered outdoor areas aimed towards adults. This second level of the townhouse is aimed towards activating the courtyards. Continuing with the idea that the kitchen is the most public part of the home they are designed to back onto a shared outdoor courtyard.
By placing the townhouses at the base of the buildings and creating specific spaces aimed towards adults and children it creates a strong flow throughout the buildings and activates the entirety of the thick ground plane.

GROUND Fronting onto a pedestrianised retail strip and opposite to a market is a cluster of live work units. The units have two distinct sides, the front engages with the public and the back is private for the residents.
Stephen Holl’s Fukuaka house explored the idea of movable doors and walls, I saw potential for this type of design to open up onto the street. The front of the house has rotating display cabinets which when they are open provide a shop front and when closed merge into the design of the house.
ELEVATION OF LIVE WORK UNITS
Given the number of dwellings on the site and numerous public spaces there is a need for some fixed amenities. Externally rented shop units are placed between the live work houses creating a strong retail presence along the pedestrianised street and making this kind of dwelling viable and further encouraging people from Coburg to visit the site.
The project has ultimately been an exploration into how different housing types can be designed in order to strengthen the links between one another as well as strengthen the links to the greater context. Each part needs to be dependent on the next in order to make up an integrated whole. Careful consideration has been taken when designing the transition between public and private which often results in dead, in-between space that is underutilised. Activating the entirety of a site is what I believe makes a successful project.

This idea of integrating public spaces into circulation routes has been tried before in Robin Hood gardens, the problem with this arrangement was the spaces provided for the public were too generic. The intention is that by creating specific places, like games rooms or workshops they are more likely to be utilised.
