ESSAY CONTEST
TEN YEARS OF SUCCESS By Jene Bellows Senior Advisor and Teacher It was in December, 1998 when Ping asked me to go with him to see the venue for what would later become GLV. Ping, who grew up learning English from tourists on the streets of Hangzhou, knew that English cannot be learned just from books. That was the beginning. People came when he opened the doors, and they are still coming to learn. The method of teaching has evolved from chat groups to so much more. Total immersion in the English language has not just succeeded with the students. Having been part of the school since the beginning, I have seen the wonders of our growth. The school has always been a family. The Chinese and non-Chinese, the support staff; from the cleaners, the van drivers, to the teachers and the managers, we work together in
Once upon a time a harmony that could never be planned or programmed. It is a unity of understanding that what we are doing is important, that everyone who comes through the doors of GLV is important, and that this kind of harmony has to go beyond our doors to the world.
“To cultivate an act, you can harvest a habit. To cultivate a habit, you can get a character. To cultivate a character, you can gain a fate.” I can't remember who said it, but it is my favorite proverb. It affects my behavior and mind, and gives me a positive and practical attitude to life. Every time I get depressed and want to give up, it always helps encourage me and puts me back in the right direction. I can tell you one example of my experience with how I applied the principle and what I got from it. When I was a student in university, I made a decision to improve my perseverance and tolerance when confronting boring issues or tough situations. So I insisted on jogging every night after the self-study program. At the beginning, I almost gave up because I felt so dull and tired, but after pushing myself I thought about many things that happened in the daytime while jogging. What's more, it really changed the way I behaved. Before that, I seldom could tolerate the dull things and always made changes.
Once upon a time in a country far, far away, there was a princess who lived in a big castle. She was very lovely and beautiful. All the men wanted to win her heart. But a sorcerer made a spell on the castle so no one could find the right path or the right door to find the princess. However, there was a brave young man, who loved the princess very much. He wanted to try to find her. So one day, he… Use your imagination to finish the story and send it to: news@glvchina.com
The best story is that of the students whose lives have been changed, who have gone from GLV to new lives. We all get letters. And we keep the doors open – always – for new learning, for all of us.
My Guiding Principle in Life By Judy Chen
The GLV Newspaper is having an essay contest! Enter by finishing the story “Once Upon A Time” that begins below. We are looking for stories of about 100 words and the best one will be published in the next edition of the paper. The winner will receive a prize of ten peace dollars. All levels are welcome. We encourage everyone to submit an essay.
I have learned how to persevere and be patient, which has helped me a lot in my studies as well as my work. Because life is not always full of excitement, dullness and adversity often attack us, and we must learn how to deal with them and even transfer them to a positive situation. This kind of attitude helped me have a good performance and get a good evaluation on my work. I believe good habits can bring a healthy attitude to life, which can change your behavior and then change your life as a result. So try your best to change your behavior first, then develop good habits, thus changing your life. In a word, change yourself first, and then go on to change the world!
Teahouse tips by Echo Tian
Should you see fellow “Morning Tea” customers washing their cups in the first pouring of tea, do not be alarmed. This is the traditional way to heat and cleanse the cup, with the waste being poured into the nearest empty container.
Wrigley’s Corporation, Guangzhou Business English Class - Fall 2008
There is a polite way to ask for the teapot to be refilled with fresh hot water: by lifting lid off and letting it hang loose by the wire or cord that binds it to the pot, or balanced on the handle. Never eat any food that has fallen o ff t h e p l a t e o n t o t h e t a b l e o r tablecloth, neither of which is very clean. Try to place your chopsticks on the holders that are provided or on your rice bowl. You can also use your chopsticks to signal that you are done with that dish by placing them on the table and not on the rice bowl or holders. It is a taboo to have your chopsticks standing straight up in your rice bowl, as they look like incense sticks for the dead. There is another “Morning Tea” ritual that has a historic origin. When you see a tea drinker tapping the table with two fingers, it is a silent expression of gratitude to the member of the party who has refilled their cup .

Special Nights, Special People By Ashley Qin
The night was beautiful and special. It was GLV’s 10th anniversary, which was celebrated at the Zhuhai TV station. Everyone dressed up and it had many exciting performances. The show lasted for three hours, which gave us many wonderful scenes. If you have enough time, I could describe them all to you one by one. I would like to talk about some of the people in the show who moved me deeply. One was the GLV headmaster, Mr. Hong. According to reviews of GLV’s history, I think their success has grown on his beliefs and personality. He is kind and can bring hope to people around him. Although he has an English school, he still pays attention to learning as well as pushing the development of the Chinese culture. He is modest and never forgets who he is. I admire him and stand behind him. He is one who I could learn from. Another person who moved me was the little blind girl. She was six years old. A great musician taught her to play the piano. Two years later, the little girl can play the piano emotionally. It touched the listeners so deeply that we nearly cried. Every one could become their best. I think the little girl proves it. Thank you GLV for introducing some great people to us on that special night.
To all the STARS of GLV! Jene and Bob Bellows
I would like to write to each and every one of you to tell you how BRILLIANTLY your stars shined at the celebration Saturday night! I am so impressed and touched by the dedication of every one of you! From the opening number to the closing song, it was a winning performance! The first dance, waving the flag of China, brought back memories of those early days in China, when this kind of dance was the form of entertainment. Wow! What a way to start...So impressive! And then the dance ended with waving the flag of GLV! Very clever! It took my breath away! But I couldn't recognize any of the dancers. I thought they were professionals! As the show went on, I began to recognize faces. The Indian dances, so beautiful! So many acts! You are all so talented! The marionettes, the children, everyone was involved, old and young, the teachers and staff, all performing together! The fashion show! How graceful and lovely were the women, how cool and handsome were the men. Watching your elegant performance, I couldn’t help thinking about how I see you at work every day. You are all so familiar to me! These gorgeous women, these handsome and graceful men, do they really work at GLV? You are all heroes. You have built GLV. And you all have been ever willing to work overtime, many long hours, with all your heart. You moved us from the Children's Center to the Culture Plaza, worked and worked, with a spirit of service that is beyond imagination. I'll never forget this. You are an example to others. And you are proof that East and West really can come together. We truly are a family. Thank you! Congratulations from both of us. With respect, love and appreciation.
I was quite excited by Saturday’s performances. They were really good. I saw many beautiful, handsome, attractive teachers, and their performances. Some of the students came together after the show and we made some funny comments about the show. I want to share them with you. The super model teacher: Tamara. The athletic teacher: Amit. The Kung Fu star: Adam. The greatest singer ever: Claudia. The greatest host: Kelly. The most interesting teachers: Mary and Tom, their puppet show was great. The most popular teachers: Kevin & Joanna; Kevin as the emperor and Joanna’s great dancing. The most beautiful teacher: Ring (She looks like an actress!) The most attractive teacher: Lily. The most mysterious teacher: Munisa. The greatest dancer: Zuber. The luckiest and happiest man: Kevin M, he sings great. The future beauty: Muazzam, she was beautiful in that dress! It was really great! GLV is just a small school, but it can hold a show. Congratulations to all the teachers and staff!

GLV, I will love you forever by Ice Li
I am very happy to have gone to GLV to study English, and I am very lucky to have run across GLV's history at the 10 year anniversary party. GLV has many excellent teachers. Not only do they teach us how to study English, but they also give us a lot of other knowledge, too. For example, they teach us many countries’ history, culture, songs, dances, and business practices. Many people who go there understand English just a little. I was attracted by their teaching method, “Total Immersion Experience”. I could sing songs in the morning and then study English skills in my morning class. I had many chances to practice my English in elective classes, workshops and evening programs. I could get help anytime, anywhere. Also, we could make many new friends. GLV, what could I do for you? I took part in the Indian dance at the 10 year anniversary party. I felt like everyone at GLV was a big family. We were the members of the big family. We could share our happy feelings with each other. I can share my happy feelings with others. I feel GLV is like Chinese bamboo. It grows higher and higher, training more and more students in the future. GLV, I will love you forever.
I have been studying at GLV for 3 weeks. I’d like to say something about GLV. I think GLV’s teachers are very good. GLV’s study atmosphere is very good. Sometimes I like GLV’s food very much, sometimes I don’t like it; maybe that’s because I like spicy food very much. At last, I want to say: “I love GLV!”

Happy Anniversary, GLV Fortline Zeng, L2B
I am so happy to study in GLV. GLV’s 10th anniversary is here. As a student, I am very proud of being a part of the big GLV family. GLV has enjoyed a big success for 10 years. It will continue to succeed. More and more students will learn some useful English here. It will help them to find a good job and perhaps open another door for them. GLV, you have made our lives so colorful and wonderful. On your anniversary, we would like to thank you very much for the happy times you gave us. I hope you will be more and more successful, so that many students will get a lot of benefit from it. Once again, happy anniversary to GLV and I love you.
It was the GLV 10th Anniversary party. I think everybody had looked forward to this day for a long time. GLV students, teachers and many guests went to the GLV party. It was at the Zhuhai TV station and it started at 7:30 pm. There were many shows for us to watch. One show that touched me deeply was performed by a small blind girl. She was just 8 years old and she was born blind; however, she could play the piano very well. She had a good teacher. She was luckier than other blind children. The blind girl learned the piano from Bob for 2 years. I wish her a good future. Then my morning teacher, Munisa, was in a wonderful dance show. She was very beautiful on stage. Kevin Morton was a host. He sang “Xiaowei” in Chinese. It is a famous song from China. Then Kevin B. came out as the king of China. That was cool. I will want to see GLV’s 20th Anniversary party. I wish GLV a great future.
GLV’s 10th Anniversary party was wonderful. Full of fantasy songs, dancing, fashion shows, Kung Fu, speeches, violin and piano playing, etc. I liked those performances very much. The actors and actresses really did good jobs. We had a terrific time celebrating the anniversary together. Ping’s speech was very interesting. I was fascinated by the speech. I will remember the exciting anniversary party in the future, because it was so unforgettable. I hope GLV keeps developing more business. The teachers and staff of GLV are going a great job. I am proud of GLV’s 10th anniversary celebration and success.
